This paper examines the historical, cultural, and biographical context of the work of the late UCLA psychoanalytic psychiatrist Robert J. Stoller, as narrated through the voice of anthropologist Gilbert Herdt, who worked with Stoller over a number of years as a postdoctoral fellow and then a junior colleague. The epistemological and professional goals of Stoller in opening up the field of psychoanalysis to the study of sexual excitement, human sexual variation, a radical revision of homosexuality dynamically, and especially the acceptance of divergent LGBT orientations is examined in the professional development and work of Stoller in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA in the 1950s–1980s. The final section of the article examines the fieldwork collaboration of Stoller and Herdt in the context of Herdt's Papua New Guinea field site among the Sambia people, with whom he has been working since 1974. Stoller was instrumental not only in supporting LGBT analytic candidates, but in encouraging a more tolerant face-to-face inclusive attitude in research, education, mentoring, and the general Weltanschauung of psychiatry.

Abstract Traditionally, ethnography is an enterprise based on face-to-face contact with research populations. Preventive measures designed to stop the spread of COVID-19, such as sheltering in place and maintaining social distance, have disrupted this important interaction and how anthropologists gather field data. New strategies are needed to overcome this restriction, especially when our research involves Latinx diasporic populations. Drawing on our current research that, to one degree or another, involves Latinx refugee, immigrant, and migrant populations, we make recommendations for using different media for maintaining virtual social contact and interviewing. Trust and rapport are key components of ethnographic research, and it is important to maintain a human connection within one’s field site, through this pandemic and beyond.

Many thinkers conceptualize authentic communication in terms of an interpersonal encounter, for example between an “I” and a “you,” a living subject and a living subject, unmediated by objects, electronic gadgets, or ICTs (informatics and communication technologies), or through an authentic human dialogue involving openness, choice, freedom, courage, and almost always, some risk and uncertainty. In the elevated language of Buber and Maritain one might say an existentially charged encounter between two (or more) beings involves opening up to each other, calling each to the other, face to face, thus allowing living truth to emerge.

Virtual Humans are here to stay. From the voice in your satNav to Apple's “Siri”, we are accustomed to engaging in some level of conversation with our technology, and it is rapidly becoming apparent that natural language interfaces have potential in a wide range of applications. Whilst audio-only communication has its place, most natural conversations take place face to face, and believable embodiment of virtual humans is the necessary next step for them to be fully integrated into our lives. Much progress has been made in the creation of relatable characters for film, but real-time facial animation presents a unique set of design challenges. This chapter examines the role of the virtual human, its history, and approaches to design and creation. It looks at ways in which they can be brought to life, interacting, assisting and learning. It concludes with a view into popular culture and perceptions of the future, where fact and fiction meet.

Today’s environmental challenges have been determined and exacerbated by human behavior. It is imperative that education develops learning-settings that enable students to make their individual lifestyles more sustainable. The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of the research-education-collaboration ‘AustrIndia-4QOL’ (Teenagers from Austria and India Perform Research on Quality of Life) on the teenagers’ awareness of the importance of environmental aspects in regards to quality of life, and on their willingness to act towards more sustainable lifestyles. Therefore, the results from a collaboration via social media and from a collaboration with additional face-to-face workshops were analyzed. The question of whether an increased awareness or willingness to act is followed by a change of real action after the project was also investigated. The results indicate that conducting education for sustainable development requires long term educational engagement, and that unintended effects cannot be excluded.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses a particular set of challenges for health services. Some of these are common across all services (e.g. strategies to minimise infections; timely testing for patients and staff; and sourcing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)) and some are specific to mental health services (e.g. how to access general medical services quickly; how to safely deliver a service that traditionally depends on intensive face to face contact; how to isolate someone who does not wish to do so; and how to source sufficient PPE in the face of competing demands for such equipment). This paper describes how St Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS) chose to address this unfolding and ever-changing crisis, how it developed its strategy early based on a clear set of objectives and how it adapted (and continues to adapt) to the constantly evolving COVID-19 landscape.

AbstractThis paper examines the issue of pauper agency under the old poor law. It relies on an examination of the ‘voice’ of paupers as it appears in a hitherto neglected source, pauper letters. The ‘face-to-face’ nature of poor relief has often been commented upon by historians, yet despite an ongoing historical preoccupation with all aspects of its administration, the question of how paupers actually interacted with, let alone were able to influence, the provision of that relief remains largely unexamined. Concentrating on requests for, or involving the issue of, clothing, this paper argues that paupers not only demonstrated a keen awareness of the imperatives underpinning relief policy in the locality, but also utilised aspects of many long-standing and powerful cultural discourses to strengthen their case for clothing relief.
