Objectives: Diet quality may be a key modifiable factor for the prevention of non-communicable disease. We aimed to investigate the association between diet quality and prevalence of obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance among Filipino immigrant women in Korea.Methods: A total of 413 participants from the 2014–2016 baseline population of the Filipino Women's Diet and Health Study (FiLWHEL) were examined. Individual dietary intakes were evaluated through 24-h recalls and then converted into two dietary quality assessments: Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Data Derived Inflammation Index (DDII) originally developed by our group. Fasting blood levels of triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterols, glucose, and insulin were measured. We used logistic regression models for odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).Results: We found a statistically significant association between MDD-W scores and decreased prevalence of abdominal obesity; ORs (95% CIs) of the 3rd vs. 1st tertiles were 0.58 (0.36–0.94; p for trend = 0.029). Increased DDII was associated with elevated prevalence of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance; ORs (95% CIs) of the 5th vs. 1–3rd quintiles were 6.44 (2.56–16.20) for triglycerides (TG), 3.90 (1.92–7.90) for low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, 3.36 (1.81–6.24) for total cholesterol (TC), 6.25 (2.53–15.41) for abnormal TG/HDL ratios, 3.59 (1.96–6.59) for HbA1c, 2.61 (1.11–6.17) for fasting blood glucose levels, 9.67 (4.16–22.48) for insulin levels, and 9.73 (4.46–21.25) for homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (p for trend <0.001 for all, except 0.033 for fasting blood glucose).Conclusions: Greater dietary diversity was inversely associated with the prevalence of abdominal obesity in Filipino immigrant women. Proinflammatory scores based on diet and lifestyle factors were associated with an increased prevalence of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Further, epidemiological studies on the relationship between dietary acculturation and chronic disease are warranted.

Abstract Background: The metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) is a novel noninsulin-based metabolic index used as a substitution marker of insulin resistance and for cardiovascular disease evaluation. However, whether METS-IR is associated with the urinary albumin–creatinine ratio (UACR) is not well known. Therefore, we explored the age- and sex-related associations between METS-IR and UACR and compared the discriminative ability of the METS-IR index and its components for elevated UACR. Methods: This study included 37,290 subjects from the REACTION study (Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals: a IONgitudinal study). METS-IR was calculated as follows:(Ln[2×fasting blood glucose{mg/dL}+fasting triglyceride level{mg/dL}]×body mass index)/(Ln [high-density lipoprotein cholesterol{mg/dL}]). Participants were divided into four groups on the basis of METS-IR: <25%, 25%–49%, 50%–74%, and ≥75%. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the associations between METS-IR vs. its components{(fasting blood glucose(FBG), fasting triglyceride level, body mass index, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol} with UACR. Results: Participants with the highest quartile METS-IR, particularly men,presented a more significant trend towards elevated UACR than towards its components (odds ratio [OR]: 1.260, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.152–1.378, P<0.001 in all subjects; OR: 1.321, 95% CI: 1.104–1.579, P=0.002 in men; OR: 1.201, 95% CI: 1.083–1.330, P < 0.001 in women). There were significant associations between METS-IR and UACR in younger participants (<65 years for women and 55–64 years for men) and those with an estimated glomerular filtration rate ≥ 90 mL/min/1.73 m2. Increased METS-IR was significantly associated with UACR in men with FBG ≥ 5.6 mmol/L or postprandial blood glucose ≥ 7.8 mmol/L and systolic blood pressure ≥ 120mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 80 mmHg. The relationships were significant in women with diabetes and hypertension. Conclusions: Increased METS-IR was significantly associated with elevated UACR, and its discriminative power for elevated UACR was superior to that of its components. The findings support the clinical significance of METS-IR for evaluating the cardiometabolic risk and renal function damage among Chinese adults.

The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of resveratrol in lowering blood glucose in the presence of standard antidiabetic treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes, in a randomized placebo-controlled double-blinded parallel clinical trial. A total of 66 subjects with type 2 diabetes were enrolled in this study and randomly assigned to intervention group which was supplemented with resveratrol at a dose 1 g/day for 45 days and control group which received placebo tablets. Body weight, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, haemoglobin A1c, insulin, homeostatic assessments for insulin resistance, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, and markers of liver and kidney damage were measured at baseline and after 45 days of resveratrol or placebo supplementation. Resveratrol treatment significantly decreased systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, haemoglobin A1c, insulin, and insulin resistance, while HDL was significantly increased, when compared to their baseline levels. On the other hand, the placebo group had slightly increased fasting glucose and LDL when compared to their baseline levels. Liver and kidney function markers were unchanged in the intervention group. Overall, this study showed that resveratrol supplementation exerted strong antidiabetic effects in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is a series of disorders such as central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, decreasing HDL, abnormal blood glucose and hypertension that ultimately lead to the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other problems. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of this syndrome among adults in Yazd. Methods: This study was performed using the data of the recruitment phase of "Yazd Health Study" (YaHS). More than 10,000 residents (aged 20-69 years) of Yazd Greater Area have participated in this prospective cohort study. Lifestyle data, disease history, and blood tests have been recorded. Sampling was cluster random based on the postal code of the residents of Yazd Greater Area. Out of the 10,000 participants in the study, approximately 4,000 people gave blood samples to the lab in the first phase and their data were used to calculate the syndrome. Metabolic syndrome was defined based on the ATP III criteria. Data were analyzed by SPSS Version 16. Results: The overall prevalence of syndrome was 33.3%. The prevalence had a significant relationship with age, age over 40 years, reaching to the highest level of over 50%. The prevalence in women was 39.9%, more than men, with 25.9%. Frequency of abnormal components of the syndrome was respectively waist circumference or abdominal obesity (47.1%), diastolic or systolic blood pressure (43.7%), triglyceride (41.6%), HDL (39.5%) and fasting blood glucose (21.7). 67.5% and 91.7% of those with syndrome were obese or overweight, respectively. Conclusion: The study showed that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, especially in women and those over 50 years old, is higher than other studies. General obesity, central obesity and hypertension are the most important components of metabolic syndrome in Yazd, which requires proper interventions.

Aim.To study the associations between blood lipid profile and blood glucose levels in men with coronary heart disease (CHD), stable effort angina (SEA), metabolic syndrome (MS), and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2).Material and methods.The study included 82 men (mean age 50,5±0,9 years) with CHD, Functional Class I–III SEA, MS, and DM-2. The following lipid profile parameters were assessed: total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL–CH), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL–CH), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL–CH), atherogenic index (AI), and triglyceride index (TGI), together with fasting blood glucose.Results.There were positive (direct) associations between higher levels (>90th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose, as well as between lower levels (≤10th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose. At the same time, there were negative (inverse) associations between lower lipid levels (≤10th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and higher glucose levels (>90th percentile), as well as between higher lipid levels (>90th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and lower glucose levels (≤10th percentile).Conclusion.Dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia demonstrate synergetic proatherogenic effects in patients with CHD, SEA, MS, and DM-2, as suggested by significant heterogeneous (direct and inverse) associations between lipid profile parameters and fasting blood glucose. The results obtained provide an opportunity for the assessment of risk levels, prognosis, and need for pharmacological prevention and treatment in patients with combined cardiovascular pathology.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a combination of physiologically dysregulated parameters that can include elevated fasting blood glucose, high blood pressure, central obesity, increased triglyceride levels, insulin resistance, diabetes, elevated low density lipoprotein levels, and reduced high density lipoprotein levels in the blood. Effective clinical management of MetS is critical as it is strongly associated with long lasting and fatal complications in patients. Alongside standard care of lifestyle changes and medication, dietary supplements derived from herbal resources could be an alternative therapeutic strategy that is safe, efficient, culturally acceptable, and has few side effects. Of the dietary supplements, spicy foods have always been considered a great source of functional bioactive compounds. Herbal therapy is broadly used in many countries as a treatment or as a preventive measure in the management of MetS risk factors, including blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipid levels. Herein, an attempt is made to evaluate the recent studies in the management of MetS with herbal alternatives, and to explore the possibility of their use as therapeutic treatments or supplements.

Objective: This study was aimed to determine the correlation between vitamin D and insulin resistance in women with PCOS. Method: This study was correlational analytic with cross-sectional approach to 34 women diagnosed with PCOS based on ultrasonography. Waist circumference and fasting blood glucose (FBG) represented insulin resistance. Women with hormonal therapy and vitamin D supplementation were not included to this study. This study used consecutive sampling method. Result: The average of age was 25.6±6.1 years old. Waist circumference and fasting blood glucose (FBG) represented insulin resistance. The average of waist circumference and FBG were 87.6±12.4 cm and 86.2±27.9 mg/dl, respectively. The mean of vitamin D levels was 11,5±3,6 ng/ml. According to Spearman’s correlation, vitamin D levels were weak negative correlated with waist circumference (r=-0.2; p>0.05) and FBG (r= -0,1; p>0,05), it statistically was not significant. Conclusion: There is weak negative correlation between vitamin D and metabolic syndrome in PCOS patients.

Previous studies have shown that marine drug propylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate (PSS) plays important roles in human diseases. This study mainly explored the effects of PSS on hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in diabetic db/db mouse models. The db/db mice were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=12), which were model control group (distilled water), positive control group (metformin), PSS low, medium, and high dose groups (PSS25, PSS50, PSS100) and normal control group (C57/BL, distilled water). The mice in each group had free diet and water for 90 days. During the experiment, food intake was recorded every day and body weight was recorded weekly. In addition, fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels were measured regularly. Finally, the contents of triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c) and total cholesterol (TC) in the serum of mice were determined. PSS can significantly reduce fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels in db/db mice, and improve insulin sensitivity. Moreover, PSS can reduce the fat accumulation of db/db mice and significantly improve the blood lipid level of db/db mice. PSS can significantly improve the symptoms of glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in db/db mice.

Background: Hyperlipidemia is a common risk factor for diabetes that leads to cardiovascular disease, one of the causes of death of diabetic patients. Theaimof this study was to investigate the association between HbA1c levels and serum lipids in Libyan patients withtype 2 diabetes. Material and methods: The study was conducted in 2019 on 325 patients (174 males, 151 females) with type 2 diabetes referred to a private clinical laboratory in Tripoli, Libya. Blood samples were collected for measurement of HbA1c, fasting blood glucose and serum lipid concentrations. Diabetes was defined according to the American Diabetes Association criteria.The data were analyzed using an independent t-test and Pearson’scorrelation test.Results: The ages of the patients ranged from 40 to 83 years, with a mean of 51.52 ± 14.32 years SD. No significant correlation between HbA1c and age was noted (r=0.011, p=0.063). There was a significant positive correlation betweenHbA1c level and fasting blood glucose (r =0.641, p=0.000), low-density lipoprotein (r = 0.240, p = 0.000), total cholesterol (r = 0.223, p = 0.000) and triglycerides(r=0.140,p 0.067). The correlation between HbA1c and high-density lipoprotein-C was negative but not significant (r= -0.088, p = 0.123). Conclusion: HbA1c could be used as a predictor of dyslipidemia and thus it may serve as anindicator of the development of cardiovascular disease in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus.
