An organic agricultural system based on natural methods and means of production is an alternative to intensive agriculture. The available research suggests that organic crops, in comparison to the conventional ones, are richer in phenolics and other antioxidants while containing less undesirable pesticide residues and nitrates. The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of polyphenols, lutein, vitamin C, and nitrates in eight potato cultivars (Mazur, Justa, Lawenda, Lech, Tacja, Laskana, Otolia, Magnolia) grown organically and conventionally in a controlled field experiment in Poland. Significant differences between potato tubers of the tested cultivars coming from organic and conventional production were identified for the majority of parameters. Higher concentrations of nitrates and lutein were found in conventional compared to the organic tubers, while organic potatoes were, on average, richer in phenolic compounds. Among the tested cultivars, Magnolia, Otolia, and Laskara were richest in vitamin C and phenolics. Otolia and Laskara also accumulated the highest levels of nitrates. If further confirmed, these observations might be of importance for the producers and consumers, who increasingly search for foods from sustainable and well-controlled agricultural systems.

AbstractTransformations of the agricultural systems have been taking place in the coastal zone of Bangladesh. In different settings, farmers have become involved in massive shrimp cultivation, shrimp–rice cultivation, rice-based improved agricultural systems or shrimp–rice–vegetable-integrated systems. The long-term livelihood, food security and adaptation of the coastal people largely depend on the sustainability of these agricultural practices. In this context, assessing the level of sustainability is extremely important. The present study attempts to examine the sustainability of agricultural practices in the coastal zone of Bangladesh. A field study was carried out in fiveupazilas(counties) in the coastal zone. The data were collected through in-depth questionnaire surveys, focus groups discussions, field observation, key informants and secondary materials. A comprehensive suite of indicators was developed considering productivity, efficiency, stability, durability, compatibility and equity related to the coastal agriculture. The categories and the indicators were aggregated using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis to measure the sustainability level of five study sites. The integrated agricultural system (shrimp–rice–vegetables) of Dumuria appeared to be the most sustainable system among agricultural practices, and other integrated systems (rice-based) of Kalaroa were also found to show a good level of sustainability. The massive shrimp cultivation system of Shyamnagar and Kaliganj appears to be the least sustainable. A traditional agriculture system with some improved methods followed in Bhola Sadar also performed in a satisfactory manner. Measuring agricultural sustainability in this way produces a useful summary of sustainability issues. The information generated from the study may be used in formulating policies for this part of the country. The holistic and interdisciplinary approach employed here has the potential to a useful framework for sustainability assessment.

The aim of the research was to determine the effect of the herbicides and their mixtures and weather conditions on the content of vitamin C in tubers of three edible potato cultivars. A field experiment was conducted from 2008 to 2010 at the Zawady Experimental Farm (52°03'N and 22°33'E) belonging to Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities. The experiment was established as a two-factorial split-plot arrangement with three replicates. The experimental factors included: I – three edible potato cultivars: ‘Cekin’, ‘Satina’ and ‘Tajfun’; II – five weed control methods: 1. mechanical weed control only – control, 2. mechanical and chemical control – mechanical control + Command 480 EC (clomazone 480 g·dm–3), 3. mechanical and chemical control – mechanical control + Command 480 EC (clomazone 480 g·dm–3) + Dispersion Afalon 450 SC (linuron 450 g·dm–3), 4. mechanical and chemical control – mechanical control + Stomp 400 SC (pendimethalin 400 g·dm–3), 5. mechanical and chemical control – mechanical control + Stomp 400 SC (pendimethalin 400 g·dm–3) + Dispersion Afalon 450 SC (linuron 450 g·dm–3). Research results were statistically analysed using analysis of variance. The research demonstrated that vitamin C content in potato tubers ranged from 207.5 to 215.8 mg·kg–1 fresh matter and was significantly affected by cultivars. The examined herbicides and their mixtures significantly affected the potato tuber content of vitamin C, which increased from 3.3 to 10.4 mg·kg–1, on average, compared with control where only mechanical control had been used. The effect of care methods on the content of vitamin C was dependent on the genetic factor. In the ‘Santina’ and ‘Tajfun’ cultivars, the highest content was obtained due to the care with herbicides Stomp 400 SC and Dispersion Afalon 450 SC, while in the ‘Cekin’ cultivar, it was the same on all objects regardless of the care used. Moreover, meteorological conditions significantly influenced the vitamin C accumulation. The lowest vitamin C content was recorded in the final study year, when the highest annual rainfall sum was accompanied by the air temperature averaging 15.6°C.

As a case study, the methodology analyses the impact of the CAP, together with water and nitrogen policies, on the agricultural system of the Lombardy irrigated lowland (Northern Italy). Results show that the introduction of the single payment makes farmers’ more influenced by market trends. Environmental constraints seem to have a larger impact than changes in prices: irrigation constraints stimulate the land allocation to extensive crops, while nitrogen constraints are very sensitive to the number of livestock. The case study illustrates that the methodology proposed can provide a set of scenarios that closely account for the peculiarities of local agricultural systems within a target area. The resulting construction of a geo-referred database is also a useful tool to gather in-depth knowledge of the area.


The work focused on assessing an overview of the agricultural economy in terms of the sustainability of agricultural systems adapted to climatic disturbances that allow ecological agricultural practices. Changing paradigms in agriculture with climate change involves adapting agricultural systems to the risks of using fertilizers in soil treatment, the interdependence of plant-soil water in agricultural practice, and the reduction of nitrate waste are also highlighted in the paper. Expectations regarding the reduction of greenhouse gases in the agricultural system have a long concern, what we propose in this study is that, at the same time, local traditions, the balance of the biosphere must be maintained with local nutrient needs based on climatic and soil characteristics. In the research, we analyzed some of the vulnerabilities, in the sense that, the agricultural practice and tradition must have a denominator in terms of fertilizers considering the risks of pollution or waste.

The research was aimed at assessing the impact of growing technology with microbiological application and herbal extracts on dry matter content, starch and yields, as well as vitamin C content in two potato cultivars, as compared to traditional fungicide-based and pest control technology, and to the variant without using bio-preparations and fungicides. The results of the study were based on the field experiment conducted in 2014–2016 at in Uhnin (51°34'N, 23°02'E), slightly acidic soil. The experiment was performed by means of randomized blocks method, in dependent split-plot pattern, in three replicates. The 1st order factor was the potato cultivars (‘Vineta’ and ‘Satina’), while the 2nd order factor was six crop technologies. Organic and mineral fertilization of potato was uniform. The applied cultivation techniques using microbiological preparations, herbal extracts and fungicide applications contributed to a significant increase in the dry matter content, vitamin C, while did not significant influence on dry matter yield. Reaction of cultivars towards the bio-preparations used has varied.

The benefits of natural honeybee products (e.g., honey, royal jelly, beeswax, propolis, beevenom and pollen) to the immune system are remarkable, and many of them are involved in the induction of antibody production, maturation of immune cells and stimulation of the immune system. The type of plants in the geographical area, climatic conditions and production method have a significantly influence on the nutritional quality of honey. However, this variability can influence consumer liking by the sensory attributes of the product. The aim of this work was to compare the most popular honeys from Poland in terms of nutritional value, organoleptic properties and antioxidant activity. In the study, five varieties of honey (honeydew, forest, buckwheat, linden and dandelion) from conventional and organic production methods were tested. The nutritional characteristics of honey samples included acidity, content of water, sugars, vitamin C, HMF and phenolics (total and flavonoids), while honey color, taste, aroma and consistency were investigated in the organoleptic characteristics. The antioxidant activity was determined in water- and ethanol-soluble honey extracts using DPPH and ORAC tests. The results showed that organoleptic and nutritional characteristics of popular Polish honeys differ significantly in relation to plant source and production method. The significant effect of honey variety on the content of HMF, saccharose and phenolics, as well as acidity and antioxidant capacity were noted. The impact of variety and variety × production method interaction was significant in the case of the content of vitamin C, glucose and fructose. A visible difference of buckwheat and forest honeys from other samples was observed. The highest content of total phenolics with antioxidant activity based on the SET mechanism was found in buckwheat honeys, while forest honeys were richer in flavonoids.

The functioning of various agroecosystems is nowadays shaped by different farming systems, which may impair their functions, as well as being beneficial to them. The benefits include ecosystem services, defined as economic and noneconomic values gained by humans from ecosystems, through supporting soil formation and nutrient circulation, and the impact of agriculture on climate and biodiversity. Their mutual flow and various disturbances depend on the agroecosystem’s management method, which is associated with the type of management of agricultural land (AL) in individual farms. This paper raises a problem of transformation in the structure of three main farming systems in Poland, in 2004–2018, in relation to the implementation of 16 selected ecosystem services and their scale. Special attention was given to organic farming, as the most environmentally friendly and sustainable. The analysis demonstrates the increase in ALs in that type of production during the analyzed period of time. Disparities of transformation associated with the type of agricultural system were noticeable at the regional level, which were presented in 16 Polish voivodeships. The results of the analysis confirm that the organic system, which is an important carrier of various ecosystem services, gained a stable position. Moreover, areas with integrated farming still do not exceed 0.5% of total agricultural lands in such voivodeships. The analysis of factors influencing the deterioration or disappearance of selected environmental services characterizing agricultural systems indicates the need to depart from an intensive conventional management system.

Abstract. Quantifying the impact of land use on water supply and quality is a primary focus of environmental management. In this work we apply a semidistributed hydrological model (SWAT) to predict the impact of different land management practices on water and agricultural chemical yield over a long period of time for a study site situated in the Arborea region of central Sardinia, Italy. The physical processes associated with water movement, crop growth, and nutrient cycling are directly modeled by SWAT. The model simulations are used to identify indicators that reflect critical processes related to the integrity and sustainability of the ecosystem. Specifically we focus on stream quality and quantity indicators associated with anthropogenic and natural sources of pollution. A multicriteria decision support system is then used to develop the analysis matrix where water quality and quantity indicators for the rivers, lagoons, and soil are combined with socio-economic variables. The DSS is used to assess four options involving alternative watersheds designated for intensive agriculture and dairy farming and the use or not of treated wastewater for irrigation. Our analysis suggests that of the four options, the most widely acceptable consists in the transfer of intensive agricultural practices to the larger watershed, which is less vulnerable, in tandem with wastewater reuse, which rates highly due to water scarcity in this region of the Mediterranean. More generally, the work demonstrates how both qualitative and quantitative methods and information can assist decision making in complex settings.
