Farrowing crates are the most common housing for lactating sows throughout the world, despite known public opposition to housing systems that deprive animals’ freedom to move. This study aimed to investigate Brazilian citizens’ attitudes towards three farrowing housing systems (crates, loose pens, and outdoors). Data were obtained via an online questionnaire containing open- and close-ended questions. Participants’ (n = 1171) attitudes were most negative towards the crates and most positive towards outdoor farrowing, and positively correlated with perceived sows’ quality of life. Participants overwhelmingly rejected the use of farrowing crates, and most supported a proposal to move from farrowing crates to loose pens, even when informed that this entailed an increased risk of piglets’ mortality. Participants’ views were underpinned by concerns about sows’ freedom of movement, behavioral freedom and naturalness, and the belief that it is possible to develop and manage housing that prevents piglet crushing that does not involve confining the sow. Furthermore, loose farrowing pens may not fully address all concerns expressed by participants regarding farrowing housing, which included the possibility of allowing sows to socialize and express maternal behaviors. We conclude that maintaining farrowing crates may erode the pig industry’s social license.

Abstract Background Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease that is associated with a reduction in bone mass and microstructures and deterioration of bone tissue. It is also associated with an increased risk of fracture that is the most important complication of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis and consequent fractures not only have a major impact on the health and quality of life, but also impose a significant economic burden on the health system of countries. Objective Since the population of many countries around the world is aging, the incidence of fractures due to osteoporosis is increasing too. The knowledge about costs and economic aspects of osteoporosis plays an important role in making policies and planning measures for the prevention and management of this disease, hence, this study systematically investigated the available evidence on the costs associated with osteoporosis worldwide. Methods Considering language, year of publication, and the research question, electronic searches were conducted in multiple databases and different sources. After selecting articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, the data were extracted and the results were summarized. To prevent bias, the whole procedure was performed by three researchers. Results Of a total of 1989 papers, 28 papers were included in the study on the basis of inclusion criteria. Among the selected studies, 13 papers reported direct and indirect costs. Based on the data extracted from the mentioned studies, the mean age of people with osteoporotic fractures was 50 years, with the highest costs associated with hip fractures. Conclusion There is a paucity of studies investigating the burden of osteoporosis in the world. The available studies indicate a lack of standardization in the methodological approach of assessing the economic burden of this disease. It is necessary to highlight the importance of studies on osteoporosis to inform policymakers and enhance health care planning.

The hostels sector in Portugal, despite its late appearance compared to other countries in the world, has registered an expressive development. However, the observed growth is not properly accompanied by research that supports and helps in understanding the sector and its future perspective. The chapter intends to be a contribution in this area, having as central focus the analysis of the influence of the characteristics of the tourists in relation to the expectations and perceptions regarding the service quality provided in a hostel in Portugal. The methodology used is a descriptive nature of a quantitative nature, based on an online questionnaire survey. The questionnaire essentially applies the SERVQUAL model, not fully following the original structure, presenting reformulated statements that are adequate to the hostel service in dimensions such as tangible aspects, reliability, empathy, promptness, and security.

Due to the fundamental digitization of social/economic life, it takes on an “on” and “offline” scale image of the world. While analyzing the impact of the ongoing pandemic on the segmentation of world markets, the disruptions in the functioning of some industries, sectors, and entire economies are becoming deeper. The spread of COVID-19 has led to the dysfunction of a known ecosystem, and the destructive force of human isolation and the lockdown of economies have significantly influenced the behavior of societies and governments. Many customer-centric companies have reactively redefined their strategies, and the financial sector, especially banks, was to play an important role in absorbing the shock by providing the necessary credit to businesses and households. Meanwhile, the same institutions have experienced capital and liquidity destabilization due to increased risk reserves created and an operating in conditions of historically low interest rates. Unexpectedly, the pandemic has become another determinant of the new quality of processes, phenomena, and business models.

The Berlin Wall came down on 9 November 1989 and marked the end of the Cold War. As old antagonisms thawed a new landscape emerged of unification and tolerance. Censorship was no longer the principal means of ensuring group solidarity. The crumbling bricks brought not only freedom of movement but freedom of thought. Now, nearly thirty years later, globalisation has created a new balance of power, disrupting borders and economies across the world. The groups that thought they were in power no longer have much of a say and are anxious about their future. As protest grows, we are beginning to see that the old antagonisms have not disappeared but are, in fact, resurfacing. This article will start by looking at the dissembling of a marriage in which the wall that had peacefully maintained coexistence disintegrates and leads to a psychic development that uncannily mirrors that of populism today. The individual vignette leads to a broader psychological understanding of the totalitarian dynamic that underlies populism and threatens once again to imprison us within its walls.

Progress in information technology that is so fast is expected to improve the quality of education in Indonesia. In the world of information technology education can help and support the learning process. Especially now all the learning process activities can be done online. Progress in information technology must also be supported by quality human resources. In this case the teacher is very instrumental in the utilization of information technology in the world of education. Because the teacher is one of the education supervisors who will encourage the advancement of the quality of education in Indonesia. But in reality the quality of teachers in Indonesia is inadequate. There are still many teachers who cannot use information technology in learning especially for teachers who are senior or old. As teacher supervisors, they must improve the quality of their performance in using technology. To improve the ability of teachers to use technology, ongoing training is needed to use technology. The role of the head of the school as a supervisor is also needed, namely the principal is obliged to supervise, control, and approach the teacher in terms of the use of technology in the learning process.
