ABSTRACTSupported by the Stakeholder Theory, this study aims to analyze the relationship between female participation in top management and corporate sustainability, based on an analysis carried out in 83 of the 100 companies listed on B3 SA with the highest market value, according to with the data for the 2018 financial year, available on the Economática® basis. Of a quantitative nature, the research used techniques of descriptive statistics, Simple Correspondence Analysis (Anacor), the means test and logistic regression. Female participation is measured by the proportion of the number of women present on the Board of Directors (CA) and on the Executive Board (DE) in relation to the total of its full members, while the proxy for corporate sustainability is measured based on participation in the Index of Corporate Sustainability (ISE). Anacor has demonstrated that there is an association between female participation in the Board of Directors and corporate sustainability; however, no association was found between female participation in DE with sustainability. The test of differences between means revealed that there are significant differences between sustainable and unsustainable companies with respect to the variable female participation in the Board, which was ratified through the application of logistic regression. It should be noted that female participation in the Board and the size of the company are the variables most likely to exercise this correlation. With this, the results confirm the prognostications of the Stakeholder Theory, insofar as it signals that female participation in top management bodies promotes effective results that meet the needs of shareholders and stakeholders.

Abstract Key message Spikelet indeterminacy and supernumerary spikelet phenotypes in barley multiflorus2.b mutant show polygenic inheritance. Genetic analysis of multiflorus2.b revealed major QTLs for spikelet determinacy and supernumerary spikelet phenotypes on 2H and 6H chromosomes. Abstract Understanding the genetic basis of yield forming factors in small grain cereals is of extreme importance, especially in the wake of stagnation of further yield gains in these crops. One such yield forming factor in these cereals is the number of grain-bearing florets produced per spikelet. Wild-type barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) spikelets are determinate structures, and the spikelet axis (rachilla) degenerates after producing single floret. In contrast, the rachilla of wheat (Triticum ssp.) spikelets, which are indeterminate, elongates to produce up to 12 florets. In our study, we characterized the barley spikelet determinacy mutant multiflorus2.b (mul2.b) that produced up to three fertile florets on elongated rachillae of lateral spikelets. Apart from the lateral spikelet indeterminacy (LS-IN), we also characterized the supernumerary spikelet phenotype in the central spikelets (CS-SS) of mul2.b. Through our phenotypic and genetic analyses, we identified two major QTLs on chromosomes 2H and 6H, and two minor QTLs on 3H for the LS-IN phenotype. For, the CS-SS phenotype, we identified one major QTL on 6H, and a minor QTL on 5H chromosomes. Notably, the 6H QTLs for CS-SS and LS-IN phenotypes co-located with each other, potentially indicating that a single genetic factor might regulate both phenotypes. Thus, our in-depth phenotyping combined with genetic analyses revealed the quantitative nature of the LS-IN and CS-SS phenotypes in mul2.b, paving the way for cloning the genes underlying these QTLs in the future.

The main objective of this research is to make the learning based on collaborative projects, pupils a Hollywood type organizational approach. This research is quantitative nature; Data collection was performed in order to explain the causes that involve the student to move from a system based on collaborative learning projects up to develop a project from an organizational point of view Hollywood type (cause and effect). Upon completion of this investigation it was found that students feel prepared to work in this mode; learning based on collaborative projects if conducive to work in Hollywood kind of organizational modality and also considering that half have worked with half different projects would be willing to do them for real problems.

The COVID-19 pandemic raises the need for diverse diagnostic approaches to rapidly detect different stages of viral infection. The flexible and quantitative nature of single-molecule imaging technology renders it optimal for development of new diagnostic tools. Here we present a proof-of-concept for a single-molecule based, enzyme-free assay for detection of SARS-CoV-2. The unified platform we developed allows direct detection of the viral genetic material from patients’ samples, as well as their immune response consisting of IgG and IgM antibodies. Thus, it establishes a platform for diagnostics of COVID-19, which could also be adjusted to diagnose additional pathogens.

The research aims to identify the relationship between the behavior of seeking information on the Internet to solve a research task and the answers given by a group of university students. To do this, a quasi-experimental study was designed, of a quantitative nature, in which both the words used in the web search process and the answers made from it were analyzed. The data was processed thanks to the use of the GoNSA2 platform, which allows monitoring the search process, and the Iramuteq software, oriented towards the analysis of lexical information. Among the main results, we highlight a shift between the topics used in the search and those observed in the response stage and an increase in the categories present in this last stage, which allows considering the search process as an instance of learning.

One of the three objectives of academic institutions all over the world is that of ensuring and upholding vibrant research productivity. For developing countries such as South Africa, public spending on research and development provides mechanisms for this. The South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is the custodian of government research funds. Evidence shows that DHET continues to grapple with the challenge of objectively measuring research productivity from the research funds invested in universities. The current funding framework applied by DHET has received numerous criticism one of them being its quantitative nature - it rewards quantity as opposed to quality research. This problem is more pronounced in Universities of Technology (UoTs) where, after more than ten years of operating as universities, the culture of research is not yet fully entrenched. Acknowledging the critical role played by research productivity measurements, we present a research productivity and quality measurement framework for UoTs. Using a case study of one of the UoTs, quantitative data relating to 48 aspects of the of existing research incentive system was used in determining the system’s effectiveness and efficacy in stimulating researchers’ activities. The proposed Framework consists of three components on: how to motivate researchers, what/how to measure research performance and how to incentivise researchers. Using an actual dataset of research outputs from the case study, an illustration on how to apply the framework has been provided. The results confirm our Framework’s ability to “count what counts” and proven the statement that “not everything that can be counted counts”.
