Recently, several studies have focused on image-to-image translation. However, the quality of the translation results is lacking in certain respects. We propose a new image-to-image translation method to minimize such shortcomings using an auto-encoder and an auto-decoder. This method includes pre-training two auto-encoders and decoder pairs for each source and target image domain, cross-connecting two pairs and adding a feature mapping layer. Our method is quite simple and straightforward to adopt but very effective in practice, and we experimentally demonstrated that our method can significantly enhance the quality of image-to-image translation. We used the well-known cityscapes, horse2zebra, cat2dog, maps, summer2winter, and night2day datasets. Our method shows qualitative and quantitative improvements over existing models.

There is an increasing interest in image-to-image translation withapplications ranging from generating maps from satellite images tocreating entire clothes’ images from only contours. In the presentwork, we investigate image-to-image translation using GenerativeAdversarial Networks (GANs) for generating new data, taking as acase study the morphing of giraffes images into bird images. Morphinga giraffe into a bird is a challenging task, as they have differentscales, textures, and morphology. An unsupervised cross-domaintranslator entitled InstaGAN was trained on giraffes and birds, along with their respective masks, to learn translation betweenboth domains. A dataset of synthetic bird images was generatedusing translation from originally giraffe images while preservingthe original spatial arrangement and background. It is important tostress that the generated birds do not exist, being only the result of alatent representation learned by InstaGAN. Two subsets of commonliterature datasets were used for training the GAN and generatingthe translated images: COCO and Caltech-UCSD Birds 200-2011.To evaluate the realness and quality of the generated images andmasks, qualitative and quantitative analyses were made. For thequantitative analysis, a pre-trained Mask R-CNN was used for thedetection and segmentation of birds on Pascal VOC, Caltech-UCSDBirds 200-2011, and our new dataset entitled FakeSet. The generateddataset achieved detection and segmentation results close tothe real datasets, suggesting that the generated images are realisticenough to be detected and segmented by a state-of-the-art deepneural network.

The objective of the present study is to evaluate the quality of the marketed and self collected samples of Plumbago zeylanica L. roots on the standardization parameters. This study is planned mainly to confirm changes with quality of drug. Now a day’s more demand of herbal drugs for disease treatment, lack of knowledge of proper methodology and availability are promoting the practices of adulteration and substitution. Thus, the standardization of the plant crude drugs is necessary to maintain their therapeutic efficacy. Comparative studies were carried out to evaluate the standards of P. zeylanica L. with emphasis on organoleptic evaluation, physicochemical and phytochemical analysis. Samples were procured from local market and self collected to determine the qualitative and quantitative variations. The result indicates that self collected sample showed significant results with comparison to marketed sample.

The quality of underwater images is an important problem for resource detection. However, the light scattering and plankton in water can impact the quality of underwater images. In this paper, a novel underwater image restoration based on non-convex, non-smooth variation and thermal exchange optimization is proposed. Firstly, the underwater dark channel prior is used to estimate the rough transmission map. Secondly, the rough transmission map is refined by the proposed adaptive non-convex non-smooth variation. Then, Thermal Exchange Optimization is applied to compensate for the red channel of underwater images. Finally, the restored image can be estimated via the image formation model. The results show that the proposed algorithm can output high-quality images, according to qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Traditional single-pixel imaging systems are aimed mainly at relatively static or slowly changing targets. When there is relative motion between the imaging system and the target, sizable deviations between the measurement values and the real values can occur and result in poor image quality of the reconstructed target. To solve this problem, a novel dynamic compressive imaging system is proposed. In this system, a single-column digital micro-mirror device is used to modulate the target image, and the compressive measurement values are obtained for each column of the image. Based on analysis of the measurement values, a new recovery model of dynamic compressive imaging is given. Differing from traditional reconstruction results, the measurement values of any column of vectors in the target image can be used to reconstruct the vectors of two adjacent columns at the same time. Contingent upon characteristics of the results, a method of image quality enhancement based on an overlapping average algorithm is proposed. Simulation experiments and analysis show that the proposed dynamic compressive imaging can effectively reconstruct the target image; and that when the moving speed of the system changes within a certain range, the system reconstructs a better original image. The system overcomes the impact of dynamically changing speeds, and affords significantly better performance than traditional compressive imaging.
