White-spot-lesions (WSL) are a common complication associated with orthodontic treatment. In the current study, the remineralization efficacy of a BiominF® paste was compared to the efficacy of a fluoride gel. Methods: Orthodontic brackets were bonded to 60 human premolars buccal surfaces, which were covered with varnish, except a small treatment area (3 mm2). All specimens were challenged by a demineralization solution for 4 days. Specimens were assigned into 4 groups: BiominF® paste, Fluoride (4-min application), fluoride (twenty four hours application), and the control (n = 15). After cross-sectioning, enamel slabs having a thickness of approximately 100–120 μm were obtained. A TMR (Transverse Micro Radiography) technique was used to observe the sub-surface enamel lesions’ depth and mineral density, and their response to the remineralization protocols. One way ANOVA was used to analyze the results (α = 0.05). The top and the cross-sectional surfaces were observed using SEM/EDS. Results: Specimens treated with BiominF® paste showed significant decrease in delta z values, however lesion depth showed no significant difference when compared to the other three groups (p < 0.05). SEM/EDS observation showed the formation of crystal like structures on top of enamel demineralized surfaces, when treated with BiominF® paste. In conclusion BiominF® paste can be considered an effective remineralizing agent for white spot Lesions.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the color change ∆E of the dental enamel following treatment with 2 kinds of protector (icon infiltrant, clinpro varnish) before fixed orthodontic treatment to avoid the possible white spot lesions. Materials and Methods: Fifty four subjects treated with fixed appliances were divided into 3 groups: the 1st group was control, while the 2nd and 3rd groups were treated with icon infiltrant and clinpro varnish before bonding procedure, respectively. Color parameters (L,a,b) were recorded for the middle and gingival thirds before and after bonding procedure to get the ∆E of each group. Results: One-way ANOVA test showed a non-significant difference in ∆E between the 3 groups at p value <0.05, while there were highly significant differences in value of ∆E between middle thirds and the gingival thirds in all groups. Conclusion: The icon infiltrant and clinpro varnish have no effect on color of the enamel when used before the bonding procedure. Color change ∆E occurring in middle third is higher than that of the gingival third. Keywords: Color change, protector, white spot lesions

<p><strong>Objective. </strong>The objective of our study was to investigate the effects of carbamazepine (CBZ) and lamotrigine (LTG) treatment on bone metabolism in epileptic patients.</p><p><strong>Patients and Methods. </strong>A cross-sectional study was performed on normal controls (N=30) and 100 patients with symptomatic epilepsy caused by a primary brain tumor, divided into two groups according to the treatment: LTG monotherapy group (N=50) and CBZ monotherapy group (N=50). For each participant serum levels of 25-OHD and osteocalcin (OCLN) were measured, and bone mineral density (BMD) was evaluated by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry method.</p><p><strong>Results</strong>. There was no statistically significant difference in the average values of vitamin D in serum between the CBZ and LTG groups (Vitamin D CBZ 17.03±}12.86 vs. Vitamin D LTG 17.97±}9.15; F=0.171, P=0.680). There was no statistically significant difference in the average values of OCLN between the CBZ and LTG groups (OCLN CBZ 26.06±}10.87 vs. OCLN LTG 27.87±}28.45; F=0.171, P=0.674). The BMD value was lower in both groups using antiepileptic agents compared to the controls, but when comparing the CBZ group to the LTG group, a statistically significant difference was only observed for the Z score (T-score CBZ: 0.08±} 1.38 vs. T-score LTG: 0.37±} 1.02; F=1.495, P=0.224; Z score CBZ: -0.05±}1.17 vs. Z. Score CBZ: 0.38±}0.96; F=4.069, P=0.046) (Table 3).</p><strong>Conclusion</strong>. The choice of antiepileptic agents for treating seizures in patients with brain tumors should be carefully evaluated in relation to their impact on bone health. These patients could benefit from supplementation and regular measurement of biochemical markers of bone turnover and BMD.

SUMMARY Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of bleaching on teeth with white spot lesions. Methods and Materials: Carious lesions with standardized whiteness were produced on the buccal and lingual surfaces of human premolars by pH cycling. Specimens were subjected to four experimental conditions (n=20/group) as follows: group 1, control; group 2, caries formation followed by remineralization using fluoride-containing casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP; Tooth Mousse Plus, GC, Tokyo, Japan); group 3, caries formation followed by bleaching using 10% carbamide peroxide; and group 4, caries formation followed by both bleaching and remineralization. The CIE L*a*b* color values were measured with a spectroradiometer, the mineral content was measured with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) on the cross-sectional surface of each specimen, and the Knoop hardness test was carried out along the EPMA scan line. Two-way analysis of variance was performed with Tukey post hoc comparison. Results: The change in the CIE color values was not significantly different between the caries-formed (ΔE*=7.03) and the bleached enamel (ΔE*=7.60). Bleaching of the carious enamel extended the whiteness (ΔE*=3.38) without additional mineral loss (p&lt;0.05). The remineralization treatment significantly increased the calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), and fluoride content of the subsurface lesion area (p&lt;0.05). The cross-sectional microhardness values correlated well with the Ca and P content (R&gt;0.80). Conclusions: Bleaching reduced the color disparities between sound and carious enamel without deteriorating the chemical and mechanical properties. The application of CPP-ACP paste enhanced mineral deposition in the subsurface lesion area of carious enamel.

ABSTRACT Aims & Objective The aim of the present study was to assess current status of knowledge and attitude among the dental students of Udaipur, India towards HIV/AIDS. Material and Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among 282 dental students of Darshan Dental College. The interview questionnaire comprised of 27close ended questions. One way ANOVA was applied by using SPSS (11.0) to compare mean level of knowledge and attitude towards HIV/AIDS. Results Shows dental students have satisfactory knowledge, but certain misconception was prevalent. It also shows that around 30.20% of the dental students held an over all negative attitude. Mean level of knowledge and attitude towards HIV/AIDS had a statistically significant difference in results among sex and academic periods. Conclusion Over all knowledge and attitude among dental students was found to be satisfactory. Most of the Dental Students, near about 69.80% have a positive attitude regarding HIV/AIDS education.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the remineralization effect of Casein Phosphopeptid Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP) on white spot lesions (WSL) and its inhibitory effect on Streptococcus mutans colonization. Study design: The study group consisted of 60 children exhibiting at least 1-WSL. Subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups: a test group of using CPP-ACP cream (Tooth Mousse, GC Europe N.V., Leuven, Belgium) and a control group using only fluoride containing toothpaste for a period of 3-months. Baseline WSLs were scored using DIAGNOdent device (KaVo Germany) and the saliva samples were collected to measure S. mutans counts. After the 3-month period the WSLs were again recorded and the saliva sample collection was repeated. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used for statistical analysis. Results: DIAGNOdent measurements were increased by time (p=0.002) in control group and no statistically significant difference (p=0.217) was found in test group by the 3-month period. In both groups, the mutans counts were decreased in 3-month experimental period. Conclusions: These clinical and laboratory results suggested that CPP-ACP containing cream had a slight remineralization effect on the WSL in the 3-month evaluation period however longer observation is recommended to confirm whether the greater change in WSLs is maintained.

Introduction and Aim: Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by diminished bone strength that increases the risk of fracture in instances of trivial trauma. The objective was to conduct ultrasound bone densitometry in different age groups (18-60 years and older) in southern Kyrgyzstan, to identify and study the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis.   Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study a total of 1200 participants were included, where 580 men and 620 women were aged between 18-60 years and older. Based on the age, the participants were divided into three groups. Bone mineral density in participants was measured using a SONOST-3000 densitometer model. The study was conducted among the population of the Osh and Jalal-Abad regions.   Results: Among the population of Osh state in the first group, normal values were found in 65.0%, osteopenia in 26.0%, and osteoporosis in 9.0% of participants. In the second group, values were significantly higher than in the first group. In the third age group, values exceeded significantly compared to the first and second groups. Similar data were obtained from the population of Jalal-Abad state, but a significant difference was found in the elderly people group with a higher percentage of osteopenia and osteoporosis.   Conclusion: The results showed the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in participants of different age categories of Osh and Jalal-Abad states, and especially in the elderly. Depending on the gender distribution, the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in our study is significantly higher in women than in men.

Abstract Aim of the study: This study evaluated the impact of two remineralizing agents containing casein phosphopeptideamorphous calcium phosphate (CPPACP), and Tricalcium phosphate (TCP) on white spot lesions. Materials and Methods: A total of ninety freshly extracted upper premolars were divided in three equal groups (30 each). Group A: Control group. Group B: Varnish containing CPP–ACP. Group C: Varnish containing TCP. The teeth were subjected to Diagnodent test after inducing white spot lesions to assess any surface changes present on the teeth. The readings were repeated post demineralization and post-remineralization. Results: Statistically significant difference was present in the mean values between the tested groups. CPP-ACP group recorded higher mean value at demineralization when compared to TCP group. Statistically significant difference (p < 0.0001) was present between the baseline and the demineralization values. CPP-ACP group presented higher remineralization results when compared to TCP group. T-test proved a significant difference between the tested groups. Conclusion: CPP-ACP containing varnish had higher remineralizing effect when compared to TCP containing varnish. Clinical Significance: Recently, the focus of restorative dentistry has been directed toward a conservative approach. Prevention and non-restorative treatment of initial enamel caries is the main concern. Remineralization procedures are the most preferred way of regeneration of lost tooth structure.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro caries preventive effect of fluoridated orthodontic resins under pH cycling with two types of acid demineralizing saliva. Materials and methods Brackets were bonded to 120 extracted human premolars, using Rely-a-bond (n = 40), Tru- Bond (n = 40) and Ortho-one (n = 40) orthodontic bonding agents. Each group of resin was divided into 2 subgroups (n = 20): immersion in remineralizing artificial saliva for 14 days and acid saliva with pH 4.3. After 14 days of pH cycling the caries preventive effect on the development of white spot lesion was evaluated considering the presence of inhibition zones to white spot lesions using two scores: 0 = absence and 1 = presence. Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U tests were used. Results Formation of white spot lesions was observed only under pH cycling using acid saliva with pH 4.3; with Rely-a-bond and Tru-Bond being significantly more effective in preventing the appearance of white spot lesions effect than Ortho-one. Conclusion The acidity of the demineralizing solution influenced the formation of white spot lesions around orthodontic brackets under highly cariogenic conditions. Rely-a-bond and Tru-bond presented higher caries-preventive effect than Orthoone. Clinical significance The development of fluoride-containing materials cannot be regarded as a permanent means to control dental caries lesions, but a complement along with other preventive methods. Objectives: White spot lesions after fixed orthodontic treatment will increase bacterial plaque formation due to increased enamel surface roughness. The aim of this study was to analyze the surface roughness of white spot lesions on enamel after a microabrasion technique, a microabrasion technique combined with calcium phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) application, and a microabrasion technique combined with fluoride application.Methods: Artificially induced white spot lesions on the enamel surfaces of 42 maxillary first premolars were randomly assigned into one of three treatment groups (n=14): (a) A microabrasion technique, (b) a microabrasion technique combined with CPP-ACP application, and (c) a microabrasion technique combined with fluoride application. A Mitutoyo SJ-301 surface roughness tester was used to measure differences in surface roughness before and after treatment, and the after treatment measurements were compared among the three groups.Results: A significant difference in surface roughness was noted for the white spot lesions on enamel before and after treatment in all groups (p<0.05). A significant difference was also found when comparing the after treatment surface roughness in all groups.Conclusion: The combination of the microabrasion technique with CPP-ACP application significantly reduced enamel surface roughness when compared to microabrasion alone or the combination of microabrasion and fluoride application.

SUMMARY Objective: This in vitro study examined the effectiveness of caries detector devices in assessing the ability of resin infiltration (RI) (Icon, DMG-Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany) to improve the optical properties of enamel white spot lesions (WSLs). Methods and Materials: Ten caries-free third molars were used. Photographs, a subjective visual assessment of the photographs, fluorescent camera (FC) images using the Spectra (Air Techniques, Melville, NY, USA), and laser fluorescent (LF) readings using the DIAGNOdent (KaVo, Biberach, Germany) were obtained from each tooth's buccal surface. Specimens were coated with nail polish leaving a rectangular window on the buccal surface and placed in pH 4.5 lactic acid gel for two weeks to create a WSL. The WSLs were analyzed by the same methods. RI was applied to half of each WSL; final photographs were then taken, and caries detector assessments were conducted. FC images were converted to grayscale, and the fluorescent image's brightness intensity was measured using ImageJ. Data were analyzed with analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer honestly significant difference test. Significance was set at α=0.05. Results: Subjective assessment of the photographs showed that RI improved the appearance of the WSLs so that they resembled intact enamel. Mean FC-brightness intensities for intact, demineralized, and demineralized RI-treated areas were 159.6 ± 9.2, 123.4 ± 7.2, and 160.9 ± 11.5, respectively. There were no significant differences in fluorescent intensity between the intact and RI areas (p=0.58). The demineralized areas had significantly lower fluorescent intensity than both the RI-treated and intact areas (p&lt;0.001). LF values did not differ significantly between intact, demineralized, or RI-treated areas. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the ability of RI to restore artificial WSLs to the esthetics and fluorescence of intact enamel. The FC can be used to assess the optical properties of WSLs and the impact of RI on these properties.
