In this study, we adopted a functional perspective on algebra. Our focus was on tables and how they were first used by second-grade elementary school students (7- and 8-year-olds) when working with functions. This qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study consisted of five classroom sessions and two semi-structured interviews, one group and one individual, two weeks apart, focused on tasks involving different functions and uses of tables, with and without labels for headings. In this study, we ask the following research questions: How do children organise values in tables with or without (a priori) labels for headings? What are the regularities (structures) identified by students? Our data revealed that students were able to organise the values of variables by listing them in columns and labelling the headings (i.e., identifying the variables involved). The ways in which children organised the data in tables enabled us to identify the structures they identified as regularities between the variables involved in the functions. More structures were correctly identified in the second interview compared to the first.

This study documents to what extent writing on a blog in a blended learning environment could influence the affective variables of elementary-school students’ writing. We grounded our framework more specifically in Deci and Ryan’s theory of self-determination. Our research team used both pre and post-tests and we conducted the analysis on the basis of inferential and correlational statistics using SPSS 17®. Results indicate an increase in motivation to write in pupils who used the blog, whereas the number of comments made per post did not seem to have any definitive impact on this subject. Cette étude documente dans quelle mesure l'écriture de blogues dans un contexte d'apprentissage en réseau peut influencer les variables affectives de l'écriture chez les élèves du primaire. Le cadre d’analyse est fondé plus spécifiquement sur la théorie de l'autodétermination (Deci & Ryan, 1985), sur le rapport à l'écriture (Chartrand et Prince, 2009) et sur la théorie transactionnelle de Rosenblatt (1991). L’équipe de recherche a conduit des tests avant et après l’exercice d’écriture afin de mesurer les variables affectives. L’analyse est basée sur des statistiques déductives et corrélationnelles, traitées avec SPSS 17®. L’analyse qualitative est également utilisée pour identifier les intentions d’écriture et les thèmes des messages affichés sur le blogue. Les résultats indiquent une augmentation de la motivation d'écrire chez les élèves ayant utilisé le blogue, tandis que le nombre de commentaires formulés par message ne semble pas avoir eu d’effet décisif.

Factual conditions require the development of teaching materials in thematic learning using a scientific approach to improve the available teaching materials. This study aims to: 1) examine the factual conditions for the use of teaching materials in thematic learning in the 2013 curriculum; 2) knowing the development of scientific based thematic teaching materials for fourth grade elementary students; 3) knowing expert judgment on the feasibility of scientific-based thematic teaching materials for fourth grade elementary students; 4) knowing the effect of the use of scientifically based thematic teaching materials on the learning achievement of fourth grade elementary school students; 5) knowing the teacher's assessment of learning using thematically based thematic teaching materials for grade IV elementary school students; 6) knowing the response of students to learning using thematically based thematic teaching materials for fourth grade elementary school students. This study uses Development Research with qualitative and quantitative research designs. The development process uses the 4-D model of Thiagarajan, Semel and Semel which has been modified to be the stage of defining, designing, and developing. Teaching materials that have been validated by experts get the category of "very valid and without revision" from expert responses and teacher evaluations with agreed criteria, student responses to the use of teaching materials in learning get very good responses from students. The results of the trials using the experimental design The Before And After Design show that there is an effect of the use of scientifically based thematic teaching materials on the learning achievement of PPKn; 2) there is the influence of the use of scientifically based thematic teaching materials on social studies learning achievements; 3) there is the influence of the use of scientifically based thematic teaching materials on the learning achievement of science. Scientific based thematic teaching materials for Grade IV Primary School students can be used in learning.

This study aims to determine the effect of using skimming techniques and describe the use of skimming techniques in understanding the reading content of elementary students. This study uses the System Literature Review (SLR) research method. From the results of several studies that have been successfully reviewed, it shows that the use of skimming techniques in understanding reading content is the right technique to use in understanding reading content because skimming techniques can increase students' knowledge of reading more. The use of skimming techniques can be done in the first way, having questions to look for, reading book titles and subtitles, reading with rapid eye movements, understanding sentences in the reading, then being able to draw conclusions. Based on the analysis that has been done, it can be concluded that the use of skimming techniques has a very good effect on students 'reading comprehension and can be an alternative or method to help improve reading content comprehension and broaden students' knowledge.

Purpose: Current in-school physical activity (PA) policies lack regulation, which testifies to the urgency of monitoring in-school moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA). This study quantifies the demographical differences of in-school PA among elementary students. Methods: Fourth-grade students wore accelerometers during school for 1 week. The teachers logged information for PA setting and duration of opportunity. Results: The accelerometry data (N = 148) showed alarming results in the lack of MVPA during in-school PA opportunity times. Significant sex differences showed boys to accumulate more minutes MVPA per day in recess than girls (7.62 ± 5.87 and 5.19 ± 3.03, respectively). Racial differences showed that non-White students accumulated significantly more minutes of MVPA per week during the school day than White students (30.82 ± 19.09 and 23.44 ± 18.41, respectively). Conclusions: The students fell short of the recommended 30 min of MVPA per day during school hours, as advised by a state mandate. Significant differences were seen in PA levels across sex and race, supporting the need for enhanced attention to influential factors on PA engagement.

COMMUNITY SERVICE INNOVATION OF THE SCHOOL MATHEMATICS HEALTH CENTER (PUSKESMAS) IN LEARNING MATHEMATICS BASED ON THE TOWN SQUARE. The purpose of this study was to develop an innovation in the school’s mathematics health center in mathematics learning through city square-based mathematics learning. Descriptive method is used with subjects in early childhood and elementary school students who are in the location of the school mathematics health center. The instrument used by the researcher itself, data collection techniques using structured interviews, observation and documentation. The data analysis technique used triangulation, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the media presented at the Puskesmas were all new and they had not yet gotten them in their respective schools. The attitude of students who become happy, like, cheerful in learning mathematics and easy to understand mathematical concepts, and bring out the creativity of early age and elementary school students in learning mathematics. Student concentration also increases because the learning model used uses an individual approach, so that they can focus more on seeing the student learning process. Parents who accompany their children generally feel happy because their children enjoy learning mathematics. Puskesmas activities have an impact on early age and elementary school students to be happy learning mathematics, like learning with mathematics media, cheerful in following math tutoring and enjoy learning mathematics. This program is also highly supported by parents because it is very helpful in the learning process of their children and eases the family’s economic burden in education.

This paper introduces our work on the development of a novel system for applying MIT’s Scratch to teaching classes of four to eight-years-old students. Scratch is a visual, block-based programming language designed for anybody to create a computer program without the worry of syntax errors by assembling icon-like command blocks. However, four to eight-year-old students have trouble using a computer mouse or keyboard and face difficulties when trying Scratch programming. This research developed a tactile, electronic block system that allows students to manipulate physical objects in a tangible way to conduct their programming tasks. The system consists of a Scratch simulator and physical, electronic blocks embodying the Scratch user interface shapes. We taught programming to the classes of second-grade elementary school students (eight-years-old) using our system. The results are encouraging. Our subjects’ interest in programming improved from 3.23 to 4.0 out of the scale of 5, and fifteen students out of twenty five were able to solve nine questions on sequence, loop, and control structure successfully, which are fundamental concepts of programming.

Cases of bullying among elementary school students are high, therefore need to get attention. This study reveals an indication of physical bullying that occurs in elementary students and its implications for moral education according to the guidance of Religion. The method used is survey and literature study with qualitative approach. Participants involved a number of 55 elementary school teachers in the Cirebon region, including districts and cities. The results showed that 1) almost half of the physical bullying indication occurred in primary school with the highest percentage is in punching and pinching behavior, while the smallest percentage of the strangling behavior, 2) moral education can be a therapy to change the bad behavior of physical bullying and can be used as an effort to prevent.

Elementary school students in general are still learning traditionally. Especially elementary school students learn entrepreneurship to train to create value innovations that are valuable independently. However, in this 4.0 era, many elementary students still run entrepreneurship in the traditional way by producing physical works, this is certainly because elementary school students do not experience development with the interference of technology. What should be elementary school students should have started to know technology early on. So, the purpose of this research is to empirically discuss how elementary school students are able to learn entrepreneurship digitally from an early age. With the iLearning method elementary school students are able to develop with a blend of technology 4.0 to create innovative results visually. The presence of the SEP (School Enrichment Program) system which is a bridge for elementary school students in learning entrepreneurship through learning so that they can improve their quality early on. In addition, the gamification techniques that exist in the system make elementary school students significantly more motivated in entrepreneurial learning. The sample data test results show that Cronbach's Alpha 0.702> 0.6 on the SEP system is significantly reliable.

This study aims to describe the reading interest of elementary school students 01 and the factors that influence the reading interest of elementary school 01. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were elementary school students 01. Data collection was carried out using the methods of observation, interviews, and documentation. Interest in reading elementary school students is still low. Based on the results of the study concluded that: reading interest of elementary school students 01 is still low. Judging from the level of student visits to the library that are rarely done. Students prefer to be in class, tell stories with friends, compared to reading books to the library. The low reading interest of students is due to students lacking feelings, attention to books and the benefits of reading, as well as motivation from themselves and from others (the environment). The factors that influence students' mint reading are factors: internal factors (feelings, attention and motivation). The steps taken are by giving motivation, continuous attention to elementary school students 01 and attention to increase reading interest. Factors that influence reading interest from outside consist of the role of teacher, environment, family and facilities. A teacher should use the theory or component of learning strategies as a learning principle so that the learning process can be accepted by students well and more easily. The existence of a library in the school, where the library is a learning resource that is expected to foster interest in reading for students, then it should be managed well, for example a more attractive library design and provide many picture books that can improve the student's motor skills.

Sustained creative work with ideas, work that leads beyond expectations, underpins knowledge creating organizations. Knowledge Building pedagogy, with its 12 principles and associated technology, Knowledge Forum, aims to provide necessary support for this goal. This exploratory study aims to assess the extent to which elementary-school students within Knowledge Building communities are able to exceed curriculum expectations. We defined “criss-crossing topics” as an indicator of exceeding expectations, and examined whether students are able to think and theorize in an interdisciplinary way and, in doing so, exceed curriculum expectations. We also examined how such criss-crossing topics may help advance the community knowledge. Results show that, when given agency, elementary students are able to extend knowledge boundaries, bringing greater range and explanatory coherence to their work, resulting in advancing community knowledge and idea improvement.
