Sheets’ buckling instability, also known as oil canning, is an issue that characterizes the resistance to denting in thin metal panels. The oil canning phenomenon is characterized by a depression in the metal sheet, caused by a local buckling, which is a critical design issue for aesthetic parts, such as automotive outer panels. Predicting the buckling instability during the design stage is not straightforward since the shape of the component might change several times before the part is sent to production and can actually be tested. To overcome this issue, this research presents a robust prediction model based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) to estimate the buckling instability of automotive sheet metal panels, based on the major, minor, and Gaussian surface curvatures. The training dataset for the CNN model was generated by implementing finite element analysis (FEA) of the outer panels of various commercial vehicles, for a total of twenty panels, and by considering different indentation locations on each panel. From the implemented simulation models the load-stroke curves were exported and utilized to determine the presence, or absence, of buckling instability and to determine its magnitude. Moreover, from the computer aided design (CAD) files of the relevant panels, the three considered curvatures on the tested indentation points were acquired as well. All the positions considered in the FEA analyses were backed up by industrial experiments on the relevant panels in their assembled position, allowing to validate their reliability. The combined correlation of curvatures and load-displacement curves allowed correlating the geometrical features that create the conditions for buckling instability to arise and was utilized to train the CNN algorithm, defined considering 13 convolution layers and 5 pooling layers. The trained CNN model was applied to another automotive frame, not used in the training process, and the prediction results were compared with experimental indentation tests. The overall accuracy of the CNN model was calculated to be 90.1%, representing the reliability of the proposed algorithm of predicting the severity of the buckling instability for automotive sheet metal panels.

Radar beam blockage is an important error source that affects the quality of weather radar data. An echo-filling network (EFnet) is proposed based on a deep learning algorithm to correct the echo intensity under the occlusion area in the Nanjing S-band new-generation weather radar (CINRAD/SA). The training dataset is constructed by the labels, which are the echo intensity at the 0.5° elevation in the unblocked area, and by the input features, which are the intensity in the cube including multiple elevations and gates corresponding to the location of bottom labels. Two loss functions are applied to compile the network: one is the common mean square error (MSE), and the other is a self-defined loss function that increases the weight of strong echoes. Considering that the radar beam broadens with distance and height, the 0.5° elevation scan is divided into six range bands every 25 km to train different models. The models are evaluated by three indicators: explained variance (EVar), mean absolute error (MAE), and correlation coefficient (CC). Two cases are demonstrated to compare the effect of the echo-filling model by different loss functions. The results suggest that EFnet can effectively correct the echo reflectivity and improve the data quality in the occlusion area, and there are better results for strong echoes when the self-defined loss function is used.

Collar-mounted canine activity monitors can use accelerometer data to estimate dog activity levels, step counts, and distance traveled. With recent advances in machine learning and embedded computing, much more nuanced and accurate behavior classification has become possible, giving these affordable consumer devices the potential to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of pet healthcare. Here, we describe a novel deep learning algorithm that classifies dog behavior at sub-second resolution using commercial pet activity monitors. We built machine learning training databases from more than 5000 videos of more than 2500 dogs and ran the algorithms in production on more than 11 million days of device data. We then surveyed project participants representing 10,550 dogs, which provided 163,110 event responses to validate real-world detection of eating and drinking behavior. The resultant algorithm displayed a sensitivity and specificity for detecting drinking behavior (0.949 and 0.999, respectively) and eating behavior (0.988, 0.983). We also demonstrated detection of licking (0.772, 0.990), petting (0.305, 0.991), rubbing (0.729, 0.996), scratching (0.870, 0.997), and sniffing (0.610, 0.968). We show that the devices’ position on the collar had no measurable impact on performance. In production, users reported a true positive rate of 95.3% for eating (among 1514 users), and of 94.9% for drinking (among 1491 users). The study demonstrates the accurate detection of important health-related canine behaviors using a collar-mounted accelerometer. We trained and validated our algorithms on a large and realistic training dataset, and we assessed and confirmed accuracy in production via user validation.

This study aims to predict the compressive strength of concrete using a machine-learning algorithm with linear regression analysis and to evaluate its accuracy. The open-source software library TensorFlow was used to develop the machine-learning algorithm. In the machine-earning algorithm, a total of seven variables were set: water, cement, fly ash, blast furnace slag, sand, coarse aggregate, and coarse aggregate size. A total of 4297 concrete mixtures with measured compressive strengths were employed to train and testing the machine-learning algorithm. Of these, 70% were used for training, and 30% were utilized for verification. For verification, the research was conducted by classifying the mixtures into three cases: the case where the machine-learning algorithm was trained using all the data (Case-1), the case where the machine-learning algorithm was trained while maintaining the same number of training dataset for each strength range (Case-2), and the case where the machine-learning algorithm was trained after making the subcase of each strength range (Case-3). The results indicated that the error percentages of Case-1 and Case-2 did not differ significantly. The error percentage of Case-3 was far smaller than those of Case-1 and Case-2. Therefore, it was concluded that the range of training dataset of the concrete compressive strength is as important as the amount of training dataset for accurately predicting the concrete compressive strength using the machine-learning algorithm.

The emergence of computer-aided design (CAD) has propelled the evolution of the sheet metal engineering field. Sheet metal design software tools include parameters associated to the part’s forming process during the pattern drawing calculation. Current methods avoid the calculation of a first pattern drawing of the flattened part’s neutral surface, independent of the forming process, leading to several methodological limitations. The study evaluates the reliability of the Computer Extended Descriptive Geometry (CeDG) approach to surpass those limitations. Three study cases that cover a significative range of sheet metal systems are defined and the associated solid models and patterns’ drawings are computed through Geogebra-based CeDG and two selected CAD tools (Solid Edge 2020, LogiTRACE v14), with the aim of comparing their reliability and accuracy. Our results pointed to several methodological lacks in LogiTRACE and Solid Edge that prevented to solve properly several study cases. In opposition, the novel CeDG approach for the computer parametric modeling of 3D geometric systems overcame those limitations so that all models could be built and flattened with accuracy and without methodological limitations. As additional conclusion, the success of CeDG suggests the necessity to recover the relevance of descriptive geometry as a key core in graphic engineering.

In the last 15 years or so, soft selective sweep mechanisms have been catapulted from a curiosity of little evolutionary importance to a ubiquitous mechanism claimed to explain most adaptive evolution and, in some cases, most evolution. This transformation was aided by a series of articles by Daniel Schrider and Andrew Kern. Within this series, a paper entitled “Soft sweeps are the dominant mode of adaptation in the human genome” (Schrider and Kern, Mol. Biol. Evolut. 2017, 34(8), 1863–1877) attracted a great deal of attention, in particular in conjunction with another paper (Kern and Hahn, Mol. Biol. Evolut. 2018, 35(6), 1366–1371), for purporting to discredit the Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution (Kimura 1968). Here, we address an alleged novelty in Schrider and Kern’s paper, i.e., the claim that their study involved an artificial intelligence technique called supervised machine learning (SML). SML is predicated upon the existence of a training dataset in which the correspondence between the input and output is known empirically to be true. Curiously, Schrider and Kern did not possess a training dataset of genomic segments known a priori to have evolved either neutrally or through soft or hard selective sweeps. Thus, their claim of using SML is thoroughly and utterly misleading. In the absence of legitimate training datasets, Schrider and Kern used: (1) simulations that employ many manipulatable variables and (2) a system of data cherry-picking rivaling the worst excesses in the literature. These two factors, in addition to the lack of negative controls and the irreproducibility of their results due to incomplete methodological detail, lead us to conclude that all evolutionary inferences derived from so-called SML algorithms (e.g., S/HIC) should be taken with a huge shovel of salt.

In this study, we propose a personalized glucose prediction model using deep learning for hospitalized patients who experience Type-2 diabetes. We aim for our model to assist the medical personnel who check the blood glucose and control the amount of insulin doses. Herein, we employed a deep learning algorithm, especially a recurrent neural network (RNN), that consists of a sequence processing layer and a classification layer for the glucose prediction. We tested a simple RNN, gated recurrent unit (GRU), and long-short term memory (LSTM) and varied the architectures to determine the one with the best performance. For that, we collected data for a week using a continuous glucose monitoring device. Type-2 inpatients are usually experiencing bad health conditions and have a high variability of glucose level. However, there are few studies on the Type-2 glucose prediction model while many studies performed on Type-1 glucose prediction. This work has a contribution in that the proposed model exhibits a comparative performance to previous works on Type-1 patients. For 20 in-hospital patients, we achieved an average root mean squared error (RMSE) of 21.5 and an Mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 11.1%. The GRU with a single RNN layer and two dense layers was found to be sufficient to predict the glucose level. Moreover, to build a personalized model, at most, 50% of data are required for training.

Abstract Springback compensation is critical in sheet metal forming. Advanced techniques have been adopted in the design stage of various sheet metal forming processes, e.g. stamping, some of which are for complex shaped products. However, the currently available numerical approaches are not always sufficiently accurate and reliable. To improve the accuracy of springback compensation, an enhanced hybrid springback compensation method named Springback Path – Displacement Adjustment (SP-DA) method has been developed in this study based on the well-known conventional displacement adjustment (DA) method. Its effectiveness is demonstrated using FEM analysis of low, medium and high strength steels adopted in automobile industry, in which a symmetrical model owning geometry complexity similar to an auto body panel was established. The results show this new enhanced SP-DA method is able to significantly improve the accuracy of springback compensation comparing to conventional displacement adjustment technique.

Постановка задачи. Для получения оптимальных проектных решений, удовлетворяющих условиям безопасности движения в сложных погодных условиях, необходимо сравнение вариантов автомобильных дорог по условиям снегонезаносимости. Такие расчеты должны стать составной частью системы автоматизированного проектирования САПР-АД. Результаты. Предложен системный поход к решению задачи, определен перечень информации, необходимой для проведения расчетов. Выполнен анализ результатов исследований по снегозаносимости дорог, проводимых в России и за рубежом. Предложены расчетные схемы и модели для оценки вариантов продольного профиля и земляного полотна автомобильной дороги по снегозаносимости. Предложены решения для оценки вариантов плана трассы с использованием карт с расчетными параметрами метелей. Выводы. Реализация предложенной методики проведения расчетов позволит на стадии проектирования оценить варианты автомобильной дороги по условиям снегозаносимости. Statement of the problem. In order to obtain optimal design solutions that meet the conditions of safety traffic in difficult weather conditions, it is necessary to compare the options of highways according to the snow tolerance conditions. Such calculations should become an integral part of the CAD-AD computer-aided design system. Results. A systematic approach to solving the problem is set forth, a list of information necessary for calculations is identified. The results analysis of studies on the snow-bearing capacity of roads conducted in Russia and abroad is carried out. Calculation schemes and models are suggested to evaluate options for the longitudinal profile and the roadbed for the snow-bearing capacity. Solutions for evaluating variants of the route plan using maps with calculated parameters of snowstorms are proposed. Conclusions. The implementation of the proposed calculation methodology will make it possible at the design stage to evaluate the options of the highway according to the conditions of the snow-bearing capacity.

This paper introduces an issue that influences students' tutorial performance prediction model that uses a supervised variety of machine learning algorithms like support vector machine , KNN(k-nearest neighbors), Naïve Bayes and supplying regression and logistic regression. The results supported by various algorithms are compared and it is shown that the support vector machine and Naïve Bayes performs well by achieving improved accuracy as compared to other algorithms. The final prediction model during this paper may have fairly high prediction accuracy .The objective is not just to predict future performance of students but also provide the best technique for finding the most impactful features that influence student’s while studying.
