Both yellow luminescence (YL) and blue luminescence (BL) bands of GaN films have been investigated for decades, but few works report the relationship between them. In this study, two sets of GaN samples grown via metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) were investigated. A close relationship was found between the YL and BL bands for unintentionally doped GaN and Si-doped GaN samples, both of which were grown without intentional acceptor doping. It was found that the intensity ratio of blue luminescence to yellow luminescence (IBL/IYL) decreases sharply with the increase in carbon impurity concentration, even though both IBL and IYL increase obviously. It was also found that IBL/IYL decreases sharply with the increase in Si doping concentration. It is suggested that the C and Si impurities play important role in linkage and competition of the blue and yellow luminescence.

ABSTRACTNanostructured surfaces have demonstrated extraordinary capacity to influence protein adsorption and cellular responses, although the mechanisms behind such capacity are still not clear to date. In the present study, the role of surface energy associated with nanostructured stiff surfaces in modulating fibronectin and consequently osteoblast (OB, bone forming cells) responses was investigated. Nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) and submicron crystalline diamond (SMCD) films with controllable surface energy were prepared by microwave-enhanced plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) techniques. Fibronectin adsorption on the diamond films with varied surface energy values was measured via the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the relationship between the surface energy and fibronectin adsorption was studied. OB aggregates (each containing 30∼50 cells) on the NCD with varied surface energy values were also studied. The results indicated that fibronectin adsorption on nanostructured surfaces was closely related to both surface energy and material microstructures, and osteoblast spreading and migration on stiff nanosurfaces are surface energy-driven processes.

Achieving constructive relationship connections is an important step as an objective of positive psychology. In the context of a culture of dissolution in close relationships, minding serves as an antidote to the demise of feelings of closeness overtime. In this paper, we argue that minding the close relationship is a powerful pathway to developing and enhancing closeness. Minding is a combination of thought and behavior patterns that interact to create stability and feelings of closeness. Minding is formally defined as a reciprocal knowing process that occurs nonstop throughout the history of the relationship and that involves a complex package of interrelated thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The components of minding are knowing and being known, achieved through reciprocal self-disclosure; attribution that is realistic about causality, but that also gives one's partner the benefit of doubt in questionable circumstances; acceptance of what one discovers in the knowing process and respect for one's partner revealed in this process; and reciprocity and continuity. The final component emphasizes the fact that minding must be done by both partners and that it is a never-ending process. The paper also describes other contemporary conceptions to which minding is closely related and addresses future direction for research on the minding process.

AbstractThe deep levels in both undoped and Si-doped GaN layer grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition have been characterized by photocapacitance and transient capacitance spectroscopy. The increase in the photocapacitance was observed in both GaN samples in the range of 1.8 to 2.2 eV. This is due to the photoionization of carriers from the deep levels associated with the yellow luminescence (YL). In addition, the transient capacitance measurements after the photoionization were also performed in the range of 1.8 to 3.4 eV. The notable transient of capacitance was observed at the photon energies of about 2.1 and 3.4 eV, the former could be associated with the change in the charge state of the YL center and latter might stem from some other defects capturing photogenerated carriers. By using the isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy (ICTS) analysis, the ICTS peaks due to the deep levels associated with YL were detected at about t = 150 s in both GaN samples. In addition, another ICTS peak was detected only in the Si-doped GaN samples. It is considered that this peak is associated with the deep levels deeper than YL levels and the deeper levels originate from defects induced by Si doping.

We demonstrate strong ultraviolet (UV) (280-330nm) photoluminescence (PL) emission from multi-quantum-well (MQW) structures consisting of AlGaN active layers fabricated by metal-organic chemical-vapor-deposition (MOCVD). Si-doping is shown to be very effective in order to enhance the PL emission of AlGaN QWs. We found that the optimum values of well thickness and Si-doping concentration of AlxGa1−xN/AlyGa1−yN (x=0.24−0.53, y=0.11) MQW structure for efficient emission were approximately 3nm and 2×1019cm−3, respectively. In addition, the PL intensities of AlGaN, GaN and InGaN quantum well structures are compared. We have found that the PL emission at 77K from a Al0.53Ga0.47N/Al0.11Ga0.89N MQW is as strong as that of InGaN QWs.

It was previously reported that insulin biosynthesis in mouse beta TC3 cells was regulated by glucose (Nagamatsu, S., and D. F. Steiner. Endocrinology 130: 748-754, 1992). In the present study, we examined the effect of glucose on the glucose transporter expression and hexokinase activities and determined the relationship between them and glucose-stimulated insulin biosynthesis in beta TC3 cells. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and Northern blot analysis revealed that beta TC3 cells expressed GLUT-1 and GLUT-3 glucose transporter mRNAs, but not GLUT-2. The levels of GLUT-1 and GLUT-3 mRNAs were not affected by glucose (0 or 11 mM glucose) over a period of 48 h. Immunoprecipitation of metabolically labeled beta TC3 cells with specific antibodies against GLUT-1 or GLUT-3 proteins revealed no effect of glucose on the biosynthesis of glucose transporters. Hexokinase [low Michaelis constant (Km) hexokinase] activity from cells incubated in 11 mM glucose for 48 h increased nearly twofold compared with cells maintained in 0 mM glucose, although the amount of cellular hexokinase protein detected by immunoblot analysis was unchanged between 0 and 11 mM glucose conditions. Glucokinase (high Km hexokinase) activity, in contrast, was not affected by glucose. Preincubation of beta TC3 cells with 2-deoxyglucose to inhibit hexokinase, thereby inhibiting all glycolysis, resulted in the decrease of glucose-stimulated insulin biosynthesis. Thus, in mouse beta TC3 cells that do not express GLUT-2, there is a close relationship between hexokinase activity and glucose-stimulated insulin biosynthesis, but not between the glucose transporter and glucose-stimulated insulin biosynthesis.
