Children in China’s poor rural areas often have insufficient protein and micronutrient intake. There is little research about the effect of milk and egg supplementation published on these children. A prospective randomized controlled trial was applied to evaluate the effect of milk and egg supplementation on the growth and fitness of poor rural primary school students in southwest China whose physical development was below national averages. A total of 955 healthy students aged 6–13 years old were recruited. The intervention group (538) received 200 g milk and 50 g braised egg at each school day, while the control group (417) kept their normal diet and received no extra supplementation. Serum vitamin D levels were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A mixed linear model with repeated measures was performed to analyze the efficacy of the supplementation. Statistically significant interactions between groups and time were seen in weight in boys, but not in girls. Significant improvement in vitamin D levels, the broad jump, and the 8 × 50 m shuttle run were observed in both genders. Therefore, the supplementation of egg and milk for two years might have a positive effect on growth and physical fitness and decreasing vitamin D deficiency in poor rural Chinese children.

Teaching socio-emotional skills among primary school students is the key to creating a climate of cooperation in classrooms and reducing disruptive or aggressive behaviors among students. The primary goal of this research is to present an educational proposal for imparting socio-emotional competencies among primary school students. We attempt to impart socio-emotional competencies based on: (1) fostering self-knowledge, self-esteem, and respect for others among students; (2) developing behaviors that allow them to perceive and express feelings and self-regulating emotions; and (3) developing assertive communication skills aimed at improving conflict resolution. This program has been designed in such a way that it is implemented throughout the academic year by organizing bi-monthly sessions of 45 min each, held until the completion of 15 sessions. The sample consists of 100 students in the third grade, with the control and experimental groups having an equal number of students (50 each). The instruments used for this research are: (a) BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (Youth Version [BarOn EQ-i:YV]): used for measuring emotional and social functioning; (b) the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters (MESSY): used for assessing social skills; and (c) Questionnaire for the Assessment of School Violence in Preschool and Primary School Questionnaire. To check the effectiveness of the educational intervention, a quasi-experimental design, along with pretest-posttest control group design, is used in accordance with the general linear model. Its effectiveness is also checked using repeated measures analysis of variance. The results show that the program is useful in preventing violent behaviors in the educational field and promoting the development of socio-emotional skills among third grade students. Finally, the applicability of the program to other educational contexts is discussed to enhance students' personal development and decrease the levels of violence found in primary school.

In this research two different ways of students' reviewing their knowledge in chemistry about carbohydrates are described: group work and discussion with teacher. In experimental group (EG) students were working in groups on their assignments, while in control group (CG) discussion led by teacher was implemented. Results showed better EG students’ achievements on paper-and-pencil test of knowledge on the following class. Keywords: evaluation, group work, teacher-led discussion, carbohydrates.

The study aimed to reveal the effectiveness of a training program to reduce stuttering disorders in primary school students in Ajloun schools in Jordan. Five dimensions of stuttering disorders were identified. Third grade students in Ajloun Elementary Boys School were distributed equally to experimental and control group. Ij study, there is statistically significant in all disorders of the dimensions of stuttering in the third grade primary students are differences in the two measurements prior and subsequent to the performance of the control and experimental groups students due to the training program used in the study, for the experimental group, which underwent a program to reduce the severity of stuttering students.

Psoriasis is an immuno-mediated chronic systemic disease involving cytokines of helper Th1 pathway. Vitamin D has an effect on keratinocyte proliferation, differentiation and immune modulation of immune system especially Th1 pathway, which is altered in psoriatic skin suggesting that Vitamin D may have a role in pathogenesis of psoriasis. To study correlation between psoriasis vulgaris and serum vitamin D. To evaluate serum vitamin D level in psoriasis cases and in control group and correlating vitamin D level with severity and duration of the psoriasis. 57 cases (>15years of age) with psoriasis and 57 healthy subjects were recruited. Psoriasis was clinically diagnosed and severity evaluated by PASI scale. Vitamin D was analysed by enhanced chemilumine scence on vitrus Eci autoanalyzer of Orth clinical diagnostic. Vitamin D deficiency defined as <20ng/ml, insufficiency 20-30ng/ml and sufficient 30-100ng/ml. Vitamin D deficiency in the study was 22.8% in patients and 14% in control group. Vitamin D insufficiency was found in 42.1% of cases and 19.3% of control. According to chi-square the p-value is 0.003 showing significant association. There was a tendency towards decrease in vitamin D level with increase in disease duration. There was negative correlation between vitamin D and PASI score. The study found a significant relationship between vitamin D and psoriasis. Further metanalysis involving larger study population will be required to establish whether vitamin D levels benefits patient with psoriasis vulgaris.

Dental healthcare is very important since dental and oral hygiene should be maintained. Statistics showed that more than 80% of children in developed and developing countries suffer from dental disease. This study aimed to see the safety of OHIS (Oral Hygiene Index Simplified) in primary school students who got and did not get little dentist cadre training in Bangli Regency in 2019. The study was done in an experimental design: pre and post-test with control design, which was conducted in August-September 2019. The sample in this study is 366 students. The difference in OHIS scores before and after treatment in the control group and treatment group was carried out by the bivariate Mann Whitney U Test. The results of the study showed that before dental health training was conducted, there were 54.3% of primary school students in the treatment group with good OHIS score criteria, and after the training was carried out as many as 98.4% of the students in the treatment group had a good OHIS. Additionally, prior to the training, 57.5% of the control group had fair OHIS criteria score. Then, after the training was carried out, 73.7% of the control group had good OHIS score. Hence, the study concluded that there was a significant difference in the OHIS of primary school students who got little doctor training prior to and after the training. Also, there was a significant difference in the OHIS of the students who did not get such treatment before and after the training.

Kajian lalu menunjukkan kebolehan mengarang karangan dalam kalangan murid sekolah rendah adalah rendah. Oleh hal yang demikian, kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengkaji kesan penggunaan peta pemikiran terhadap tahap penulisan karangan Bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan murid tahun lima. Penyelidik menggunakan kaedah eksperimen kuasi melibatkan satu sampel kajian yang terdiri daripada 64 murid sekolah rendah yang dibahagikan sama rata kepada satu kumpulan perlakuan dan satu kumpulan kawalan. Para murid dalam kumpulan pertama menggunakan peta pemikiran dalam pengajaran karangan, sementara kumpulan kedua menggunakan kaedah tradisional. Ujian pra dan ujian pasca digunakan untuk mendapatkan data yang dianalisis dengan Statistical Package For Social Science (SPSS) versi 21. Bagi kumpulan perlakuan, analisis data menunjukkan skor pasca ujian min murid adalah lebih tinggi dari skor pra ujian min mereka, sekali gus menunjukkan mereka memperoleh peningkatan dalam penulisan karangan dari segi kandungan dan pengolahan idea. Dapatan yang sama juga menunjukkan skor pasca ujian min murid dalam kumpulan perlakuan adalah lebih tinggi dari min skor yang sama bagi mereka dalam kumpulan kawalan, sekali gus menunjukkan kumpulan perlakuan adalah lebih berprestasi daripada kumpulan kawalan. Dapatan kajian ini mempunyai implikasi dalam amalan pengajaran semasa. Guru mata pelajaran Bahasa Melayu boleh menggunakan peta pemikiran sebagai satu alat pengajaran bagi membantu murid sekolah rendah belajar menulis karangan dengan lebih berkesan.   Studies have shown that students’ essay writing abilities of primary school students are low. As such, this study was carried out to examine the extent of the effects of using thinking maps on the teaching of Malay language essay writing among Year Five students. In this study, the researchers used a quasi-experimental method involving a study sample consisting of 64 primary school students were divided equally into a treatment group and a control group. The former used thinking maps in essay writing learning, while the latter used a traditional method. A pre-test and a post-test were used to obtain the data, which were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21. For the treatment group, the analysis of data showed students’ mean post-test scores were significantly higher than their mean pre-test scores, indicating they made significant improvements in essay writing in terms of content and ideation. The same analysis also showed students’ mean post-test scores in the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group, indicating the former outperformed the latter. These findings have a practical implication for the current teaching practice. Malay language teachers can use thinking maps as a teaching tool to help primary school students effectively learn to write essays.

Background: Transient tachypnea of newborn (TTN) is a common cause of respiratory distress in newborns with estimated incidence of 1-2% of all newborns. Although a self-limiting transient condition but it may cause severe morbidities. This study was conducted to find association of serum vitamin D levels in neonates who develop TTN as compared to normal healthy neonates.Methods: With thorough history with structured questionnaire and lab tests, serum vitamin D levels of 45 neonates who develop TTN were compared with 56 healthy neonates in control group.Results: Out of 45 neonates who develop TTN 39(86.7%) were deficient in vitamin D as compared to control group where 33(58.9%) out of 56 healthy neonates were deficient in vitamin D.Conclusions: Lower vitamin D levels at birth in term neonates is associated with increased risk of developing TTN and vitamin D may have a role in its pathogenesis.

  THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VITAMIN D SERUM LEVELS WITH QUALITY OF LIFE IN EPILEPSY PATIENTABSTRACTIntroduction: Epilepsy affects overall health status and decreases the life quality of epilepsy patient. Seizure frequency, seizure type, daily activity disorder, depression and anxiety also affect the quality of life epilepsy patient. Vitamin D is considered as a neurosteroid modulator of nerve excitability and seizure susceptibility. Studies of vitamin D direct role in epilepsy are limited. Nevertheless, some studies show the role of vitamin D as an anticonvulsant that reduces the incidence of seizures.Aim: To determine the correlation between vitamin D serum levels with quality of life in epilepsy patient.Method: A cross sectional observational study on people with epilepsy in neurology clinic at Dr. Soeselo Hospital, Slawi, Dr Kariadi Hospital, and Tugurejo Hospital, Semarang in July 2017-January 2018. The quality of life was assessed with Quality of Life in Epilepsy 31 (QOLIE-31). Vitamin D serum levels measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Data were analyzed using Spearman test. Results were considered significant if p<0.05.Results: There was no correlation between vitamin D serum levels with quality of life in epilepsy. There was significant correlation between anxiety with quality of life and there were difference between age group with quality of life. Discussion: There was no correlation between serum vitamin D levels and  quality of life in epilepsy patient.Keywords: Epilepsy,quality of life epilepsy, vitamin DABSTRAKPendahuluan: Epilepsi mempengaruhi status kesehatan secara keseluruhan dan menurunkan kualitas hidup pasien epilepsi. Kualitas hidup dinilai menggunakan kuesioner Quality of Life in Epilepsy 31 (QOLIE-31), pengukuran kadar vitamin D serum menggunakan metode enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data dianalisis dengan uji Spearman, hasil dianggap bermakna jika p<0,05.Hasil: Tidak didapatkan hubungan antara kadar vitamin D serum dengan kualitas hidup serta domainnya pada pasien epilepsi. Didapatkan hubungan yang bermakna antara ansietas dengan kualitas hidup dan antara kelompok usia dengan kualitas hidup.Diskusi: Tidak terdapat hubungan bermakna antara kadar vitamin D serum dengan kualitas hidup pada pasien epilepsi.Kata kunci: Epilepsi, kualitas hidup, vitamin D

Abstract Several studies have demonstrated that higher levels of vitamin D are associated with better prognosis and outcomes in infectious diseases. We aimed to compare the vitamin D levels of paediatric patients with mild/moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease and a healthy control group. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who were hospitalised at our university hospital with the diagnosis of COVID-19 during the period between 25 May 2020 and 24 December 2020. The mean age of the COVID-19 patients was 10.7 ± 5.5 years (range 1–18 years); 43 (57.3%) COVID-19 patients were male. The mean serum vitamin D level was significantly lower in the COVID-19 group than the control group (21.5 ± 10.0 vs. 28.0 ± 11.0 IU, P < 0.001). The proportion of patients with vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in the COVID-19 group than the control group (44% vs. 17.5%, P < 0.001). Patients with low vitamin D levels were older than the patients with normal vitamin D levels (11.6 ± 4.9 vs. 6.2 ± 1.8 years, P = 0.016). There was a significant male preponderance in the normal vitamin D group compared with the low vitamin D group (91.7% vs. 50.8%, P = 0.03). C-reactive protein level was higher in the low vitamin D group, although the difference did not reach statistical significance (9.6 ± 2.2 vs. 4.5 ± 1.6 mg/l, P = 0.074). Our study provides an insight into the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 for future studies. Empiric intervention with vitamin D can be justified by low serum vitamin D levels.

Abstract Research evidence on traditional dance teaching has shown how important it is for primary school education to institute reforms and present new ways of intervention in order to contribute effectively to the overall development of the child's personality. The aim of this research is a) to demonstrate the effectiveness of a music and movement instructional program on traditional dance learning, in terms of primary school students patterns of self-reported positive learning experiences and active lesson participation and b) to examine its impact on students’ internal motivation to play and dance with a more enjoyable and creative mood. During a period of six months 80 students (34 boys and 46 girls) aged between 9-10 years old, took part in the research. They were divided into two groups, the experimental group (N = 40) and control group (N = 40). The experimental group was taught Greek traditional dances according to a Music and Movement teaching model, while the control group was taught the same dances with a direct teaching model. The impact of the two models on students’ motivation to participate actively during the lesson was tested with the use of the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI). The results showed that the use of Music and Movement teaching models can have a positive impact on students’ intrinsic motivation and active participation in the course of traditional dance.
