In the last decade, the cultivated area of maize has increased in Central Europe due to its high yield potential and diverse uses for feed and bio-energy. This has led to more intense maize cultivation, with narrowed crop rotations resulting in the increase in maize leaf diseases. During 2012 and 2013, an inventory of maize leaf spot diseases was carried out in various regions in Central Europe. In addition to the major leaf pathogens, isolates of Phoma-like species were obtained from oval to elliptical spots on leaves or found in lesions produced by other leaf pathogens. A total of 16 representative Phoma-like strains were characterised for their pathogenicity on maize leaves, for their morphological characteristics and with a phylogenetic analysis based on multilocus sequence analysis using part of the actin (ACT), calmodulin (CAL), β-tubulin (TUB), internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA and large subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU) genes. The strains were grouped into four clades, and morphological studies supported this classification for most of them. Strains were compared with six reference Phoma-like species strains from the Westerndijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute collection reported to colonise maize. The pathogenic group of strains from our collection (after completion of Koch’s postulates) did not cluster with any of these species, indicating a different and novel Phoma-like species infecting maize leaves. To our knowledge, this is the first study dissecting the Phoma species complex on maize leaves in Central Europe.

Photinia × fraseri is a well-known green plant mainly distributed in the Yangtze River and Yellow River Basin, east and southwest of China (Guan et al. 2013). In October 2020, typical leaf blight symptoms on roughly 10% leaves in a Photinia × fraseri shrub were observed in the campus of Sichuan Agricultural University (30°42′19″ N, 103°51′29″ E). Initially, chlorotic lesions with brown margins occurred on the leaf margin, then the large patches formed to cause leaves necrotic, finally lesions to dry and acervulus bred in 2–4 months later. Five single conidium isolates were carried out (Chomnunti et al. 2014) cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 25 ℃. All isolates shared similarly morphological characteristics, which was white and thin, and the reverse were yellowish. Mycelium was hyaline, sparsely septate, measuring 1–4 μm in diam. Conidiogenesis formed after 7 days. Conidiogenous cells were discrete, lageniform, smooth, thin-walled, colorless. Conidia were fusiform, straight to slightly curved, 4-septate, 21–30 × 5–7 μm (x ̅= 27 × 6.0 μm, n=30); basal cells were obconic with truncate base, hyaline, thin- and smooth-walled, 4–7 μm long (x ̅= 5.5 μm, n=30); three median cells were doliiform with thick walls, concolorous, olivaceous, constricted at the septa, and septa and periclinal walls were darker than the rest of the cell, 14–20 μm long (x ̅= 17 μm, n=30); apical cells were hyaline, conic to cylindrical, 3.0–6.5 μm long (x ̅= 4.5 μm, n=30), with 2–4 (mostly 3) tubular apical appendages arising from the upper portion, rarely branched, 7.5–18 μm long (x ̅= 12 μm, n=50); basal appendage was single, unbranched, 3–10 μm long (x ̅= 6.5 μm, n=30). DNA was extracted from the representative strain (SICAUCC 21-0012), and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the large subunit of the nrDNA (LSU), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-α), and partial sequences of β-tubulin (tub2) were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and sequenced with primers ITS5/ITS4, LR0R/LR5, 728F/1567R, and Bt2a/Bt2b, respectively (Zhang et al. 2012, Ariyawansa & Hyde 2018). The sequences were deposited in GenBank, viz. MZ453106, MZ453108, MZ467300, MZ467301, respectively. The nucleotide blast showed 99% (ITS, 0 gaps), 100% (tub2, 0 gaps), 100% (tef1-α, 0 gaps) identities with the ex-type Pestalotiopsis trachicarpicola Yan M. Zhang & K. D. Hyde (IFRDCC 2440). The fungus was identified as P. trachicarpicola combined with phylogeny and morphology (Maharachchikumbura et al. 2012, Zhang et al. 2012). To conduct Koch’s postulates, five healthy 6-year-old P. × fraseri were inoculated with 10 µl spore suspension (106 conidia/ml) onto the wounded sites (five leaves per plant, ~1 to 2 years old) via sterile pin, and five healthy plants treated with sterile dH2O as controls (Yang et al. 2021). The plants were placed in a greenhouse at 25°C with relative humidity >80%. After 2 months, leaf blight symptoms gradually emerged on inoculated leaves, and the controls were symptomless. Fungal isolates from symptomatic plants showed similar morphological characteristics as SICAUCC 21-0012, and the pathogen was not isolated from asymptomatic plants. To our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf blight caused by P. trachicarpicola on Photinia × fraseri in China. Disease management should be adopted properly to restore and improve its ornamental value.

During survey on rock-inhabiting fungi from karst habitats in Guizhou, China, two new species in Cyphellophora were discovered and identified. Phylogenetic analysis based on combined sequences of the nuclear large subunit (nucLSU) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA revealed that the tested isolates, clustered into two clades that well affiliated in the genus of Cyphellophora. Morphological characteristics were also supported the estabolishment of the new species. Herewith Cyphellophora botryose sp. nov. and Cyphellophora guizhouensis sp. nov. were described and their differences from closely related species were discussed.

Members of Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) are frequently isolated from soils, food, feeds, trees, and to some extent from humans and other animals. The taxonomic status of these fungi is being revised but no attempt has been made to identify those isolated in Iran, a mountainous country with a high biodiversity. The objective of the present research was to study the phylogenetic diversity of FSSC strains recovered from soils in Iran by analyzing morphological characteristics and DNA sequences. A total of 65 strains belonging to the FSSC were recovered from agricultural soils in western Iran. Based on differences in their morphological characters, 25 strains were selected for phylogenetic analysis employing translation elongation factor-1α (tef1) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequences. Comparisons of DNA sequence data revealed that all isolates belonged to Fusarium falciforme, Fusarium keratoplasticum, Fusarium petroliphilum, the unnamed species FSSC 5, and unknown species of Fusarium, which represents a new lineage within members of Clade 3. Based on morphological features and phylogenetic study, F. keratoplasticum and F. petroliphilum were reported for the first time in Iran.

Bayberry (Myrica rubra) is a commercial fruit in China. For the past seven years, twig blight disease has been attacking bayberry plantations in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, China, leading to destructive damage and financial loss. In this study, five fungal species associated with twig dieback and stem blight were identified based on morphological characteristics combined with multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, partial sequences of β-tubulin (tub2), translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1-α), large subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU) and small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU) genes, which are Epicoccum sorghinum, Neofusicoccum parvum, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Nigrospora oryzae and a Pestalotiopsis new species P. myricae. P. myricae is the chief pathogen in fields, based on its high isolation rate and fast disease progression after inoculation. To our knowledge, this is the first study reporting the above five fungi as the pathogens responsible for bayberry twig blight. Indoor screening of fungicides indicates that Prochloraz (copper salt) is the most promising fungicide for field application, followed by Pyraclostrobin, 15% Difenoconazole + 15% Propiconazole, Difenoconazole and Myclobutanil. Additionally, Bacillus velezensis strain 3–10 and zeamines from Dickeya zeae strain EC1 could be used as potential ecofriendly alternatives to control the disease.

<p>Sago development requires plant material as superior seedlings for rehabilitation and replanting. Until 2016 two superior sago varieties were released, namely Molat sago varieties from Maluku in 2011 and Selatpanjang Meranti sago varieties from the Meranti Islands Regency, Riau in 2013. Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province is one of the areas of natural sago growth, and producing sago starch . This district has the opportunity to develop sago palms as a potential and regional producer. In connection with that, a research has been conducted which aims to find out and obtain superior sago species from Indragiri Hilir Regency, from 2015 to 2017. The research method was conducted by observing the sago population with high yield potential. For the observation, 10 sample trees every year were selected in each location/village in Gaung Anak Serka District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province. Data observations were carried out on the morphological characteristics of sago and suckers, sago starch production potential, and proximate analysis. Observation data were analyzed for diversity, standard deviation and coefficient of variance. Morphological observations and production of Bestari sago starch obtained an average leaf length of 8.00 m, diameter of the diameter of bottom stem 47.37 cm, circumference of the bottom stem 148.52 cm, the number of leaf scars on the leaf-free stem 53.23 scars, the number leaves on the crown 16.98 strands, the distance of leaf scar 12.42 cm, the length of the petiole 231.00 cm, the width of the petiole 9.25 cm, the thickness of the petiole 3.93 cm, the length of the rachis 660.33 cm, the length of the leaflets 155.59 cm, leaflets width 9.39 cm, and dry starch yield 254.94 kg per palm. Proximate analysis results on Bestari sago starch obtained an average water content of 13.00%, ash content of 0.60%, fat content of 0.83%, protein content of 0.84%, crude fiber content of 0.29%, and carbohydrate content was 84.34%, with 350 calories, Vitamin C 0.96 mg/100 gr sago starch, and total sugar around 1.43%. Hoping that sago Bestari variety will become the suckers resources for sago development in Indragiri Hilir Region, Riau Province and other region of Indonesia.</p><p> </p><p><strong>ABSTRAK </strong></p><p>Pengembangan sagu membutuhkan bahan tanaman sebagai bibit unggul untuk rehabilitasi dan penanaman kembali. Sampai tahun 2016 telah dilepas dua varietas sagu unggul, yaitu varietas sagu Molat asal Maluku tahun 2011 dan varietas sagu Selatpanjang Meranti asal Kabupaten Kepulauan Meranti, Riau tahun 2013. Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir, Provinsi Riau adalah salah satu daerah pertumbuhan sagu alami dan penghasil pati sagu. Kabupaten ini memiliki peluang untuk dikembangkan tanaman sagu sebagai potensi dan penghasilan daerah. Sehubungan dengan itu, maka telah dilakukan penelitian yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan mendapatkan jenis sagu unggul asal Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir, sejak tahun 2015 sampai tahun 2017. Metode penelitian dilakukan dengan observasi terhadap populasi sagu potensi hasil tinggi. Untuk pengamatan telah dipilih sebanyak 10 pohon contoh setiap tahun di setiap lokasi/Desa di Kecamatan Gaung Anak Serka, Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir, Provinsi Riau. Pengamatan data dilakukan terhadap karakteristik morfologi tanaman sagu dan anakan, potensi produksi pati sagu, dan analisis proksimat. Data pengamatan dianalisis keragaman, simpangan baku dan koefisien keragamannya. Hasil pengamatan morfologi dan produksi pati sagu Bestari diperoleh rata-rata panjang bebas daun 8,00 m, diameter batang bawah 47,37 cm, lingkar batang bawah 148,52 cm, jumlah bekas pelepah daun pada batang bebas daun 53,23 buah, jumlah daun pada mahkota 16,98 helai, jarak antar pelepah 12,42 cm, panjang pelepah 231,00 cm,lebar pelepah 9,25 cm, tebal pelepah 3,93 cm, panjang daun 660,33 cm, panjang anak daun 155,59 cm, lebar anak daun 9,39 cm, dan produksi pati kering 254,94 kg per pohon. Hasil analisis proksimat pada pati sagu Bestari diperoleh rata-rata kadar air 13,00%, kadar abu 0,60%, kadar lemak 0,83%, kadar protein 0,84%, kandungan serat kasar 0,29%, dan kadar karbohidrat adalah 84,34%, dengan 350 kalori, Vitamin C 0,96 mg/100 gr pati sagu, dan total gula sekitar 1,43%. Diharapkan varietas sagu Bestari menjadi sumber benih untuk pengembangan sagu di Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir, Riau dan daerah Indonesia lainnya</p>

The genus Hydnellum is an important group of stipitate hydnaceous fungi which can form ectomycorrhiza with many species of woody plants. In recent decades, the frequency and number of basidiocarps observed in China have been declining significantly. So far, however, we know little about the species diversity of Hydnellum in China. In this study, we conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses based on sections of multiple loci, including the large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU), the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS), the small subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (SSU) and the second-largest subunit of RNA polymerase II gene (RPB2), as well as morphological studies, of collected samples of Hydnellum from China. We also inferred Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian phylogenies for the order Thelephorales from the dataset of the combined nLSU and ITS. This study has revealed the phylogenetic position of Hydnellum in the order Thelephorales, and phylogenetically confirmed ten major clades in Thelephorales; Twenty-nine taxa are proposed, described or reported, including 10 new subgenera (Hydnellum subgenus Hydnellum, subg. Caesispinosum, subg. Croceum, subg. Inflatum, subg. Rhizomorphum, subg. Scabrosum, subg. Spongiosum, subg. Subindufibulatum, subg. Violaceum and subg. Zonatum), 11 new species (Hydnellum atrorubrum, H. atrospinosum, H. bomiense, H. brunneorubrum, H. fibulatum, H. granulosum, H. inflatum, H. rubidofuscum, H. squamulosum, H. sulcatum and H. yunnanense), 3 newly recorded species (H. caeruleum, H. peckii and H. spongiosipes) and 5 notable specimens (Hydnellum sp 1, H. sp 2, H. sp 3, H. sp 4 and H. sp 5). A classification system based on the morphological characteristics (especially the hyphal structure types) and molecular analyses is proposed to accommodate most species in Hydnellum. The distinguishing characters of the subgenera and the new species with their closely related taxa are discussed. A key to the species of Hydnellum from China is provided.

A crown and root rot complex was detected in the alfalfa (Medicago sativa ‘Longdong’) fields of Huanxian County. The symptoms of the diseased plants were characterized, and 11 fungal species were obtained from the roots. These fungi included isolates that resembled the genus Microdochium. An isolate of this type, designated MP313, was proven to infect alfalfa, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Isolate MP313 was examined by microscopy and the morphological characteristics indicated that it was similar to members of the genus Microdochium. Sequence analyses of the 28S large subunit as well as the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of MP313 revealed 98 to 100% similarity to the corresponding regions of M. tabacinum. A polymerase chain reaction assay based on the ITS region of the rDNA was developed to amplify a 304-bp fragment from DNA concentrations as low as 20 fg/μl, which was sensitive enough to detect isolate MP313 in diseased root samples. Taken together, these results confirmed that M. tabacinum was one of a complex of fungi associated with crown and root rot in the alfalfa samples collected in Gansu Province. This is the first report of M. tabacinum being a pathogen of alfalfa in China.

L’objectif de cette étude était de collecter, trier et étudier la diversité phénotypique des accessions de maïs de décrue sur la base de quelques variables sélectionnées, parmi les descripteurs du maïs. Cent soixante-deux (162) accessions de maïs de décrue collectées dans la haute et moyenne vallée du fleuve Sénégal ont été ainsi triées et évaluées au plan morphologique. Parmi ces 162 accessions, 64,81% sont collectées au niveau de la haute vallée et 35,19 % dans la moyenne vallée. En se basant sur trois caractères morphologiques du maïs, (couleurs des grains, texture des grains et couleur de la rafle), le tri de cette collection a montré une très grande variabilité en morphotypes (15), avec la dominance du morphotype Jaune-Corné-Blanc (J-C-B) dans la collection avec un effectif (85/162). Les morphotypes avérés très rares ne dépassent pas l’effectif 1 dans la collection. La caractérisation sur épis de ces morphotypes en fonction de certains caractères (poids de l’épi et le poids de 100 graines, longueur de l’épi,…), liés au rendement a montré une diversité phénotypique très importante. En effet, le poids de l’épi varie de 63,03g pour les morphotypes à petits épis à 290 g pour les morphotypes à gros épis de même que pour la longueur de l’épi qui varie de 10,5 cm à 26 cm. Cette diversité offre une grande possibilité de choix des géniteurs pour la création de variétés améliorées de maïs ayant un potentiel de rendement élevé et adaptées à différentes zones agro-écologiques de la vallée du fleuve Sénégal. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to collect, sort and study the phenotypic diversity of flood recession maize accessions based on a few selected variables, among the maize descriptors. One hundred and sixty-two (162) flood recession maize accessions collected in the high and medium valley of the Senegal River were thus sorted and evaluated morphologically.Among these 162 accessions, 64.81% are collected in the upper valley and 35.18% in the middle valley. Based on three morphological characteristics of the maize (grain colors, texture and color of the stalk), the sorting of this collection showed a great variability in morphotypes (15), with the dominance of the morphotype Yellow-Corné-Blanc (JCB) in the collection with a strength (85/162). The morphotypes found to bevery rare do not exceed the number 1 in the collection. Characterization on the ears of these morphotypes according to some characteristics (weight of the ear and the weight of 100 g, length of the ear), related to the yield showed a very important phenotypic diversity. In fact, the weight of the ear varies from 63.03 g for short-eared morphotypes to 290 g for coarse-cut morphotypes as well as for spike length ranging from 10.5 cm to 26 cm. This diversity offers a great opportunity for brood stock selection for the creation of improved maize varieties with high yield potential and adapted to different agro-ecological zones of the Senegal River Valley.

Broccoli is native to moderate climatic zone, and summer cultivation of this species in Central Europe conditions leads to a decrease of heads quality. The aim of present investigations was application of dark-chilling at 2&deg;C for 1 and 2 weeks to transplants of various ages to enhance its tolerance against adverse conditions in the field and to modify the yield potential. Broccoli cv. Monaco F<sub>1</sub> can be recommendedfor summer production in Central Europe, because of high yield potential and lack of buttoning in high temperature conditions. Dark-chilling of 4-week-old transplants for two weeks significantly increased the yield, but also the percentage of stems with hollows as compared to control. Significant advancing of harvest together with prolongation of the harvest&rsquo;s period can be achieved by the use of 6 and 8-week-old transplants chilled for 2 weeks. Dark-chilling of 10-week-old transplants resulted in forming of smallest heads with the highest percentage of hollow stems. &nbsp;

The results of two-year research (2011-2012) of the most important morphological characteristics of 1-year-old shoots in eight peach hybrids obtained from a crossing combination Flaminia ? Hale Tardiva Spadoni were shown in this paper. The following characteristics were studied in tested hybrids: length and diameter of shoots, internode length, number of flowers and vegetative buds per shoot, ratio of flower to vegetative buds, number of flower buds per node and 1-m length of a shoot. The properties of sylleptic shoots on one-year-old shoots have also been studied. The significant differences were determined among the hybrids for parameters such as the diameter of shoots, internode length, number of flower and vegetative buds per shoot. Hybrids FH1 and FH6 were characterized by the highest density of flower buds, so that they are singled out as potentially the most yielding. These hybrids may be of interest for growing in areas where there is a risk of frost and in the domain of breeding when creating new peach cultivars of high yield potential.
