Video activity recognition, despite being an emerging task, has been the subject of important research due to the importance of its everyday applications. Video camera surveillance could benefit greatly from advances in this field. In the area of robotics, the tasks of autonomous navigation or social interaction could also take advantage of the knowledge extracted from live video recording. In this paper, a new approach for video action recognition is presented. The new technique consists of introducing a method, which is usually used in Brain Computer Interface (BCI) for electroencephalography (EEG) systems, and adapting it to this problem. After describing the technique, achieved results are shown and a comparison with another method is carried out to analyze the performance of our new approach.

The prediction interval (PI) is an important research topic in reliability analyses and decision support systems. Data size and computation costs are two of the issues which may hamper the construction of PIs. This paper proposes an all-batch (AB) loss function for constructing high quality PIs. Taking the full advantage of the likelihood principle, the proposed loss makes it possible to train PI generation models using the gradient descent (GD) method for both small and large batches of samples. With the structure of dual feedforward neural networks (FNNs), a high-quality PI generation framework is introduced, which can be adapted to a variety of problems including regression analysis. Numerical experiments were conducted on the benchmark datasets; the results show that higher-quality PIs were achieved using the proposed scheme. Its reliability and stability were also verified in comparison with various state-of-the-art PI construction methods.

AbstractTechnology-based education of children with special needs has become the focus of many research works in recent years. The wide range of different disabilities that are encompassed by the term “special needs”, together with the educational requirements of the children affected, represent an enormous multidisciplinary challenge for the research community. In this article, we present a systematic literature review of technology-enhanced and game-based learning systems and methods applied on children with special needs. The article analyzes the state-of-the-art of the research in this field by selecting a group of primary studies and answering a set of research questions. Although there are some previous systematic reviews, it is still not clear what the best tools, games or academic subjects (with technology-enhanced, game-based learning) are, out of those that have obtained good results with children with special needs. The 18 articles selected (carefully filtered out of 614 contributions) have been used to reveal the most frequent disabilities, the different technologies used in the prototypes, the number of learning subjects, and the kind of learning games used. The article also summarizes research opportunities identified in the primary studies.

In Recent Years, many discoveries in the history of Islamic mathematics have not been reported outside the specialist literature, even though they raise issues of interest to a larger audience. Thus, our aim in writing this survey is to provide to scholars of Islamic culture an account of the major themes and discoveries of the last decade of research on the history of mathematics in the Islamic world. However, the subject of mathematics comprised much more than what a modern mathematician might think of as belonging to mathematics, so our survey is an overview of what may best be called the “mathematical sciences” in Islam; that is, in addition to such topics as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry we will also be interested in mechanics, optics, and mathematical instruments.

The paper discusses semiotic aspects of higher human functions and a possibility and relevance of traditional search for their neurophysiological basis. The state of the art on the subject is reviewed and the lack of data on anthropological specificity for reasoning, thinking, language and its AI modeling is highlighted. Experimental neuroscience presumes that if we know the characteristics of neurons and their connections, we automatically understand what mind and consciousness are. However, it is evident that such a paradigm does not allow us to get relevant answers to the main questions. I argue that the problem should be dealt with not only within the field of neurophysiology proper. Rather, such research should involve exploring the 'archeology' of mental processes as they are revealed in arts as well as in other symbolic spaces. The paper discusses the adequacy of physiological methodology when it is employed to demonstrate brain mechanisms of higher functions. Besides, I explore the relevance of juxtaposing similar data from other biological and artificial intelligent systems. I view language processing, mind and reasoning and 1st person experience (qualia) as human specific features, and questions the possibility of direct testing these phenomena. The paper links genetic, anthropological and neurophysiological data to semiotic activity and semiosphere formation as the basis for communication. The paper discusses the place of humans in the changing world in the context of new cognitive dimensions.
