The Romanian market for plant protection products (PPP) is fragmented, dispersed, and very competitive. In recent years, there has been a constant decrease of farmers’ profitability, which has cascaded into the distribution of pesticides, fertilizers, and seeds. Since the structure of any market is dynamic over time, companies can determine the effectiveness of their different marketing strategies using analytical tools. As an alternative to econometric tools for predicting the market share in the farming industry, we propose the analytic network process (ANP) model, in which the market share is described as a network of nodes and clusters. Domain experts validate the ANP structure with respect to criteria and alternatives. The model allows the quantification of qualitative judgments provided by either experts or customers, through the highest eigenvalues. The eigenvalues are then further aggregated to deliver conclusive scores for the distribution of a particular market among competitors. The purpose of this research is twofold: (1) to develop an ANP-based tool for analyzing the competitive position (market share) of a company and (2) to help companies use the new tool in order to improve their business. The paper is of interest to PPP distributors, PPP manufacturers, customers, and policy-makers. The first two categories of stakeholders can use the analysis to better direct their marketing efforts, the customers can use it to select their providers, and the policy-makers can use it to evaluate and improve the control of PPP.

Nowadays, it is obvious that creative tourism industry has become very essential for countries and societies; therefore, governments work on constituting policies in order to develop this industry. To be successful in improving creative tourism industry, governments should identify the influential factors and focus on ones that are more important rather than investing a bit on many different factors. Because of the interrelations among factors, this research is aiming to prioritize factors that influence strategic policies of creative tourism industry in Iran using analytic network process (ANP). Data were collected during the period of May 2017 to February 2018. Participants in this research are 13 tourism experts with more than 10 years' experience in the field. Results show that the most influential criterion is "business support" and the most influential subcriterion is "supporting midsize businesses." This study helps policy makers to improve creative tourism by emphasizing on those factors that have high priority from the viewpoint of strategic policy-making.

In October 2015, The Saudi Council for Economic and Development Affairs unveiled an austerity plan in response to a drop in the price of oil to around US $26, which threw the country into an unexpected deficit of about $100 billion. Later on, an austerity plan evolved into the National Transformation Plan (NTP) 2020. The NTP focused on the key drivers for economic growth. Although only an outline of the NTP was released at the time, we speculate on what will be the best implementation policy. Knowing that the government is taking a developmental approach that is inclusive, transparent and accountable to all stakeholders in society, we opted to address this question as a multi criteria decision problem formulated in an Analytic Network Process (ANP) model. The ANP is a sound methodology for structuring the problem to find which policy to focus on to make the transformation as effective as possible, taking into account social and political factors in addition to economic ones. Simple multi-criteria decisions are made by deriving priorities of importance for the criteria in terms of a goal and of the alternatives in terms of the criteria. Often one also considers benefits, opportunities, costs and risks and their synthesis in an overall outcome. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) with its independence assumptions, and its generalization to dependence among and within the clusters of a decision — the Analytic Network Process (ANP), are theories of prioritization and decision-making. Here we show how to derive priorities from pair-wise comparison judgments, give the fundamental scale for representing the judgments numerically and by way of validation illustrate its use with examples and then apply it to make a simple hierarchic decision in two ways: pair-wise comparisons of the alternatives and rating the alternatives with respect to an ideal. Network decisions are discussed and illustrated with market share examples. A mathematical appendix is also included.

Abstract Reduction of copper-based fungicides with the final aim of phasing out has a high priority in European policy as well as in organic agriculture. Our survey aims at providing an overview of the current use of copper-based plant protection products in European organic agriculture and the need for alternatives to allow policy makers to develop strategies for a complete phasing out. Due to a lack of centralized databases on pesticide use, our survey combines expert knowledge on permitted and real copper use per crop and country with statistics on organic area. In the 12 surveyed countries, covering together 83% of the European organically managed horticultural area, we calculated approximately 3258 t copper metal per year are consumed by organic agriculture, equalling to 53% of the permitted annual dosage. This amount is split between olives (1263 t y-1, 39%), grapevine (990t y-1, 30%), and almonds (317 t y-1, 10%), followed by other crops with much smaller annual uses (<80 t y-1). Potato, usually considered a highly demanding plant for copper inputs, only uses 39 t y-1 of copper per year. In 56% of the allowed cases (countries × crops), farmers use less than half of the allowed amount, and in 27% less than a quarter, with some variability between countries. Considering the large volumes of copper used annually, replacement of copper seems only feasible if all preventive strategies from the crop protection pyramid are fully implemented and several affordable alternative plant protection products are successfully brought to the market.

In this paper, customer criteria on selecting a baby diaper brand in the market of Egypt have been investigated and alternatives have been mentioned. In order to solve the problem Analytic Network Process and Weighted Axiomatic Design approaches have been suggested. On the first step of this study, via ANP method, market share forecast of different brands and priorities of criteria have been calculated, and those priorities have been used in Axiomatic Design Approach in order to view competitiveness of two brands which is on the top of market.  Potential achievements of strategies based on strengthening weaknesses of brands, have been discoursed.

This paper adopts a fuzzy analytic network process approach in identifying the impact of the presence of firm size on the content of the manufacturing strategy infrastructural decisions that integrates the classical manufacturing strategy framework and the notion of sustainability. Linguistic variables with equivalent triangular fuzzy numbers were used to elucidate judgment of elements in pairwise comparison matrices within the context of the analytic network process. Analytic network process effectively handles the complexity of the decision-making problem resulting from the subjectivity and interrelationships inherent among decision components. Domain experts in manufacturing strategy and sustainability were asked to elicit judgment in pairwise comparisons. Results show that the content of the infrastructural decisions of manufacturing strategy remains constant regardless of the presences of firm size component. However, the priority of each decision to the goal which can be translated as the priority of implementation of each policy varies with the presence of firm size.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a method for identifying causal relationships in a strategy map. Design/methodology/approach – A strategy map is a visual representation of the strategy of a company, which includes the strategic objectives of a company and the cause-effect relationships between them. Its network structure facilitates its representation as an analytic network process (ANP) model. The proposed method starts with a network with all possible relationships and then it deletes those relationships, which are not important. To do this, it uses the techniques of the ANP approach. Findings – It was found that ANP is a good tool for modelling a strategy map and for identifying the important relationships of a strategy map. A study case of a manufacturing is shown to illustrate how the proposed method can be used in practice. Practical implications – Normally, the cause-effect relationships between strategic objectives are generated in a subjective way. Even this way of working is widely accepted in practice, some studied have shown that the declared relationships are not necessarily valid. The proposed method provides a quantitative tool to establish the relationships between strategic objectives, which are obtained using a method (ANP) that has a strong conceptual base. This is an indication that the strategy map obtained represents in a better way the strategy of the company. Originality/value – ANP is a methodology which is used to estimate the priority of nodes with in a network. In this work ANP is used to estimate the priority of the arcs of the network. The results of application in a company represent a good indication that the method may be implemented in other manufacturing companies.

Selection of the working strategy is a critical problem and it plays a significant role in the success of organization development. On the other hand, selecting the most appropriate working strategy among a pool of alternatives is a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. Since every working strategy has its benefits and costs and may bring a company different opportunities and risks, which kind of working strategy is the most appropriate for a company to accomplish is a sophisticated and complex decision with a high degree of uncertainty. Therefore, the current paper proposed an integrated evaluation model based on the analytic network process (ANP) and the complex proportional assessment (COPRAS), to help the decision makers or managers with the selection of proper working strategy in a fuzzy environment where the fuzziness and uncertainties are handled with linguistic terms parameterized by triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs). In this paper fuzzy ANP (FANP) is utilized to take into account interdependence and dependencies and determine the importance weights of benefit, opportunities, cost and risk (BOCR) factors, and fuzzy COPRAS is applied to rank the alternatives. To show the potential application of the proposed model, a real world application is conducted to illustrate the use of the proposed model for the working strategy selection problem. The results show the capability and effectiveness of the proposed model.

Turkey has a long history in Islamic civilisation. However, there is still lack of research to examine participatory banks in Turkey. This is despite the fact that the legacy of strong Islamic law, the majority Muslim population, and the strategic location of the country have failed to serve as catalyst to boost market share of participation banks in the country. This study is aimed at developing priority ranking of SWOT factors and strategies on the participatory bank development in Turkey. Data are collected from experts and practitioners of Participation (Islamic) bank in Turkey. Analytic Network Process (ANP) is used as the methods of analysis. The finding shows that the aspects of participatory banks in Turkey are derived from strengths, opportunities, weakness and threats factors. Sharia board is the main strength of this study, while inadequate competitive product is the main weakness. In the future, government support stands as the first priority from opportunity aspect. Islamic bank in Turkey also needs to aware on the absence of separate law as the main priority of threats aspect. Another finding shows that separated law and regulation is the main strategies of the study. Concomitantly, the study suggests separate law and regulation as the main strategy to enhance banks participation in Turkey. This study could serve as reference point for the regulator in formulating appropriate policy strategies to increase market share of participatory banks in Turkey.

This study aims to assist decision makers to improve hotel service performance by developing strategic orientations. Strategic orientations are imprecise and subjective: they vary according to domain experts’ opinions and practical experience. This study develops an integrated rough multiple attribute group decision-making (MAGDM) model that supports decision makers to acquire a systematic view of strategic methods for improving performance to the desired level. The model incorporates three methods. First, we use the rough number approach to determine group opinions from the practical experience of domain experts. We then apply the rough decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL)-based analytic network process to develop a rough influential network relation map (RINRM). The rough influential weights based on strategic orientations and their corresponding attributes are calculated. Finally, we use the modified complex proportional assessment of alternatives with gray relations (mCOPRAS-G) and the influential weights to calculate the relationship ratio between performance and aspiration level. Our model flexibly assesses the vagueness involved in decision-making, enabling more objective expert estimation of attributes in subjective surroundings than traditional multiple attributes decision-making models. We use the Taiwanese hotel industry as an empirical case study. Our study provides useful information on how to enhance hotel services and achieve optimal performance based upon expert judgments and the RINRM. The results show that customer orientation is the optimal strategy for hotel service promotion.
