The economy of the United Arab Emirates has ranked 27th in the world for decades, which has supported its human development being rated highest among Arab nations. The country, however, has remained oblivious to its ecological deficit. This study explores sources of this deficit by analyzing three sets of data related to its economic growth, human development, and ecological deficit for 29 years from 1990 to 2019. The results of the data analyses indicate that although an increase in the country’s GDP has a high positive correlation with the nation’s human development, the indicator variables related to both measures have a significant reverse influence on the variability of the values for the 333country’s ecological deficit. Validating the statistical results through interviews with ten authorities from various government ministries and the oil industry shows that, when considering the nation’s finite biocapacity, the genesis of its ecological deficit lies in persistent developments that rely on petroleum revenues and the rapid influx of the millions of migrants who are needed to close the skill gaps of United Arab Emirates (UAE) citizens. Although initiatives to reduce the UAE’s ecological footprint have been in place since 2007, the lack of environmental action plans, policies, and enforcing regulations have resulted in the nation’s failure to move toward achieving sustainable development. This has pushed the country toward the brink of ecological bankruptcy.

Based on statistical yearbook data in Nanchang city, this paper applies a calculation mode of ecological footprint to conduct calculation and analysis on the ecological footprint, as well as bearing capacity of Nanchang city-the core city of Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone from the year 2005 to 2009. According to some research, the average ecological footprint of Nanchang city in recent five years is 1.974879hm2/cap, the average ecological bearing capacity is 0.224917hm2/cap, and the average ecological deficit is 1.749962hm2/cap.Regional eco-environment is in the condition of unsustainable development. This paper also makes an analysis on the intensity of ecological footprint and ecological efficiency in Nanchang city. By taking these as a foundation, this paper puts forward strategies and suggestion to reduce ecological deficit of Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone and achieve sustainable development in this zone.

The ecological footprint model with food, house, energy and waste as consumption accounts through analysis of urban matter and energy consumption was established. Based on 2000-2009 data of Fushun, a resource-based and heavy industrial city, ecological footprint, ecological carrying capacity and ecological surplus/deficit of Fushun were analyzed, respectively, and then urban sustainable development status was evaluated. The results show that the urban development state is ecological deficit and ecological deficit index have been increased from 5.227hm2/cap to 6.516hm2/cap during 2000-2009, Fushun is always under an overload condition, which is highly unsustainable. The ecological footprint is 89.39% made up by the fossil energy footprint on average, the main consumption of Fushun's development are fossil energy land. And then urban 104 Yuan GDP ecological footprint index decreased from 5.660 hm2/cap to 2.247hm2/cap during 2000-2009, the urban energy utilizing efficiency have been improved.

The ecological footprint is a quantitative method which can measure the sustainable development of ecological. In this way, we can conclude the impact degree of human activities on the environment. In this paper, the study region is Huanggang which is in Hubei province. Based on the introduction of ecological footprint, we calculate and analyze the agro-ecological footprint of Huanggang.The results show that the agro-ecological footprint of Huanggang is: 1.728252hm2/person.The available ecological capacity is 0.314946hm2/person; Per capita ecological deficit is up to1.413306hm2/person.This result shows that the agriculture development of Huanggang is in the state of unsustainable, meanwhile, we proposed some countermeasures to improve the agriculture sustainable capability of Huanggang.

Purpose Because natural resource utilization is a predictor of sustainable development, an evaluation of the efficiency of resource utilization is critical for assessing developmental potentiality. The purpose of this paper is to apply three-dimensional (3D) ecological footprint theory to assess the effects of production and consumption on ecological systems in Hefei, China. Design/methodology/approach Using data for Hefei for the period 2005-2014, an ecological footprint model (EFM) was developed to calculate the area’s ecological footprint (EF), ecological carrying (EC) capacity and obtain two indices, namely, footprint depth and size. The relationship between economic development and natural resource utilization was subsequently evaluated based on the calculated ecological deficit and the EF demand per Renminbi 10,000 of gross domestic product (GDP). Findings Over the last decade, Hefei’s EF per capita evidenced a 9.87 percent growth rate, increasing from 1.16 hm2/person in 2005 to 2.70 hm2/person in 2014. EC capacity per capita increased from 0.21 hm2/person in 2005 to 0.36 hm2/person in 2014, evidencing a gradually increasing trend at an average annual growth rate of 6.24 percent. Thus, between 2005 and 2014, the ecological deficit increased annually by three times. The amplification of footprint depth significantly exceeded that of footprint size. Between 2005 and 2014, Hefei’s EF per capita Renminbi 10,000 of GDP decreased annually by 4.68 percent. Thus, energy consumption in Hefei exceeded the natural regeneration capacity of energy resources, with excessive development and resource utilization impacting on the regional ecological system. Practical implications The application of a 3D EFM sheds light on natural resource utilization within regional development. Moreover, footprint depth and size are significant predictors of the impacts of natural resource utilization. These findings will also benefit other countries or cities. Originality/value This is one of the first empirical studies to apply a 3D EFM to evaluate the relationship between natural resource utilization and economic development. Adopting a sustainable development framework, it provides insights into the effects of natural resource utilization in relation to the balance between the natural ecological system and economic development. This has far-reaching implications beyond Hefei and China.

Reasonable use of land or not, directly related to the sustainable development of a country or region. This paper introduced the basic concept, calculation formula and method of the ecological footprint. We calculated the ecological footprint of Shenzhen by application of the ecological footprint model. The results showed that the per capita ecological footprint in Shenzhen in 2011 was approximately 2.486 hm2, while the per capita ecological capacity was approximately 0.0597 hm2, the per capita ecological deficit was approximately -2.433 hm2, and the ecological footprint is about 47.33 times greater than the ecological capacity. Finally, we discussed the limitations of applying the ecological footprint model to judge the sustainable use of land in this paper.

The scientific and methodological approach to the evaluation and analysis of the efficiency of system management by innovation factors for sustainable development of national economy from the point of view satisfaction vital interest’s population is developed. This is the calculation of the modernized index human development based on the adjective model based on 26 indicators (social, economic and environmental subsystems), as well as using the methods of the main components and the slip matrix. The resultant value is the modernized Human Development Index (MHDІ) of Ukraine. The architectonics MHDІ of Ukraine in 2007–2017 from the position of sub-indices of the ecological, social and economic subsystems is analyzed. Consequently, the scientific and methodological approach based on the MHDI change allows us to draw conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the work and public administration bodies in the context of making managerial decisions regarding the satisfaction of the vital interest’s population. MHDI considers the main regulated parameter of the system management in the innovation factors of sustainable development in socially oriented economy. The tendency of steady decline MHDI of Ukraine in 2007–2017 on 53.45 % was confirmed, which confirms inefficient state regulation of crisis situations in Ukraine. In order to increase the efficiency management of innovative factors by sustainable development of the national economy, from the standpoint of satisfaction vital interest’s population, it is proposed to intensify the use of public debt and savings bonds, market and non-market methods of relief and debt load. This is due to the fact that at the current stage of development in the national economy, public external debt is one of the most significant indicators of the state economy. It is at the same time a criterion for the effectiveness of public financial policy, as well as a threat and opportunity for the Ukrainian economy. In order to optimize its size, various methods, approaches, tools are used. Based on the analysis of world experience, it has been established that the securities market, in particular debt securities, plays a strategic role in regulating this issue. Therefore, it makes sense to recommend government debt bonds and government savings bonds to optimize the amount of external public debt.

The article deals with the problem of achieving sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between the components of sustainable development, taking into account the involvement of indigenous peoples in nature conservation. Climate change makes achieving sustainable development more difficult. Indigenous peoples are the first to feel the effects of climate change and play an important role in the environmental monitoring of their places of residence. The natural environment is the basis of life for indigenous peoples, and biological resources are the main source of food security. In the future, the importance of bioresources will increase, which is why economic development cannot be considered independently. It is assumed that the components of resilience are interrelated and influence each other. To identify this relationship, a model for the correlation of sustainable development components was developed. The model is based on the methods of correlation analysis and allows to determine the tightness of the relationship between economic development and its ecological footprint in the face of climate change. The correlation model was tested on the statistical materials of state reports on the environmental situation in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Yugra. The approbation revealed a strong positive relationship between two components of sustainable development of the region: economy and ecology.

This study aimed to correlate sustainable development indicators with the occurrence of mosquitoes from the genus Aedes and phlebotominae sand flies, vectors of dengue fever, American visceral leishmaniasis and American tegumentary leishmaniasis, in order to establish a relationship between infestation indices and sustainability conditions in southern and northern neighborhoods of Natal, Brazil, adjacent to environmental protection zones 5 and 9, respectively. Data were obtained on Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus breeding sites and captures of phlebotominae sand flies of the genus Lutzomyia in the study area between 2006 and 2008, from the Center of Zoonosis Control of the Municipal Health Secretariat, and correlated with environmental and social indicators. Factorial analysis was applied to transform these indicators into a sustainability index for each neighborhood studied (Neighborhood Sustainability Index – NSI). Relating these indices with the occurrence of insect vectors at these sites shows a high positive correlation between SID and the Breteau index of A. aegypti (p=0.028) and with the index of household infestation by phlebotominae sand flies (p=0.01). This reveals a pattern allowing the association of sustainability conditions in the study areas with the occurrence of these insects. Analyses demonstrate the occurrence of a larger number of A. aegypti breeding sites and higher indices of household infestation by phlebotominae sand flies in neighborhoods with lower sustainability indices. Knowledge of the relationship between sustainable development indicators and the occurrence of zoonotic vectors may contribute to public health programs as well as to a restructuring of public policies in the study areas.
