When Covid-19 arrived in Europe from the far East, the media and experts in economics and social sciences noticed that it was the expected discontinuity in the socio-economic development process. Really, the current phase has spread since the 1960s, when the application of econometric worldwide-spread development model was going to produce social inequalities, and consumption of physical, social, and cultural resources. Some places in Italy, far from the erosive and urban context and erosive metropolitan areas, are currently isolated seeds of a new cycle of life, because of the local community identity and the strong link between human, cultural, and natural components are currently working together towards a new development model. Starting from a 20-year research about Local Cultural Systems in Sicily, the research group has defined and tested the cultural dimension of development, and affirmed that the transition to a culture-based growth, as defined by UNESCO, should be the solution for overcoming the erosive Anthropocene era. In western Sicily, the Belice Valley is working on cultural transition thanks to relationships between cultural heritage, identity, and settlement network, that we have designed as a Territorial Archipelago. The research demonstrates that local communities will innovate if they rethink the development model and reshape spatial patterns and economic networks focusing on the creativity-driven vision.

Tal (mount) Irbid in Irbid city, Jordan, with its continuous human occupation from the Bronze Age until the present, demonstrates the main landmark that has guided the spread of the urban growth of the city. The outcome of studies carried out at Irbid’s historic core, in relation to assessing the loss and degradation of the core’s cultural heritage, shall be analyzed, investigated, and discussed, as also concerns, obstacles, and issues of sustainability to this urban heritage conservation and tourism planning. The paper starts by defining the urban heritage for the historic core, which tends to be set aside, in the city’s rapid development. Actually, the remaining historic buildings can also provide the necessary inter-relationships between the historic core areas and the wider urban context to achieve a sustainable and integrated tourism and conservation action plan for the three heritage neighborhoods around the Tal, while building on tourism opportunities and taking into consideration the needs and the vital role of the local community. The paper concludes that urban heritage conservation and protection of the integrity and identity of the historic core city fabric can assist in its branding, promotion, and management in ways that could enhance the local community belonging, quality of everyday lifestyle, and visitors' experience.

The article explores the first pedagogical experience of Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, Professor Oleg Nikolaevich Loshakov in Vladivostok. The work provides a brief overview on the history of the formation of professional arts education in the Far East. Positive influence of Oleg Loshakov — graduate of the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov on improving the quality of the educational process at the Vladivostok Art School is noted. He contributed greatly to the development of fine arts in Primorsky Krai as a teacher and representative of the Moscow School of Painting. Further creative activity of O. N. Loshakov who painted landscapes on Shikotan Island together with a group of young artists that were his first graduates is described. The materials of the article expand the range of ideas about the artist's work in the Far East, and reveal new aspects of his landscape paintings of the 1960s. Special consideration is given to the monumental landscape in the master's work. The relevance of the topic is determined by the lack of materials devoted to the period of O. N. Loshakov's formation as a teacher and artist.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present a framework for the adaptive re-use of wheat milling buildings setting in modern urban contexts in Jordan. This paper also aims to highlight the industrial heritage with a focus on wheat milling buildings, which date back to the beginning of the 20th century, as they document and represent significant aspects of the socio-cultural history of Jordan.Design/methodology/approachThe approach to this statement will be through a theoretical investigation into the notion of industrial heritage, a historical overview of wheat milling in Jordan, as well as a case study analysis to support the theoretical framework following a value-based approach for the case of Baboor Al-Qisar. Baboor Al-Qisar is a wheat milling structure that the Department of Antiquities (DoA) is willing to adaptively reuse as an industrial museum that tells the local narrative of wheat milling and points out the non-physical values associated with the building’s original use.FindingsThe paper introduces a framework for wheat milling buildings incorporation within the modern urban context as industrial heritage museums or socio-cultural facilities. The findings offer a reflection on approaching similar case studies as a tool for their conservation, management and promotion to create new tourist destinations as a form of sustainable urban regeneration.Originality/valueThis research bridges the gap between practice and theory in terms of adaptive reuse strategies within the Jordanian local context. No similar studies have been done on wheat milling structures from the 20th century in the country with local community engagement as an integral part that is carried out within the functionality and future use of the site.

ABSTRACTHow can we approach the process of construction of young men and women as subjects in the case of a group of high school students, who, in some cases, come from the families of maya origin and are inhabitants of a marginalized urban area in the southeast of Mexico? In this paper I argue that their way of being, relationship with structures, future projects, and notions of “good life” become intelligible through an approach that puts into dialogue the concepts of social experience (Dubet, 2011) and otherness. The first one is a valuable tool that allows to discover a particular dialectic of integrationsubjectivation, which characterizes the relationship of these young people with social institutions and actors. The second one locates the students as constructors of a symbolic universe, where different cultural elements, among them those originated in the family and in school, interact. The representation of a young subject that I construct differs from the stereotypes – usually negative and homogeneous– that are used to describe the urban area in question; it also allows to understand the necessities and aspirations of these individuals according to their own notions of good life, in which the individual and the communal aspects are merged.RESUMEN¿Cómo podemos estudiar la construcción del sujeto en el caso de un grupo de jóvenes estudiantes de un bachillerato universitario, algunos de los cuales provienen de las familias de origen maya, habitantes de una zona urbana marginal, en el sureste de México? Arguyo que su forma de ser, relación con las estructuras, proyectos a futuro y nociones de la vida buena cobran inteligibilidad mediante un acercamiento que pone a dialogar los conceptos de experiencia social (Dubet, 2011) y alteridad. El primero representa una herramienta conceptual valiosa para descubrir una dialéctica sui géneris de integración-subjetivación que caracteriza la relación de estos jóvenes con las diversas instituciones y actores sociales. El segundo ubica a los jóvenes como constructores de un universo de sentido, en el que interactúan elementos culturales propios de sus familias de origen y el bachillerato universitario, entre otros. La representación del sujeto joven que construyo se aleja de aquellos estereotipos –generalmente negativos y homogeneizantes– que circulan acerca de los jóvenes de la zona en cuestión; asimismo permite comprender las necesidades y aspiraciones de estos individuos acorde a sus propias nociones de la vida buena en las cuales se funden lo individual y lo comunal.

This concluding chapter summarizes Kennan’s experience with East Asia and the legacies of his engagement with the region. It surveys his strategic approach to the Far East and highlights his explanation of why he did not believe his doctrine of containment was applicable there. It tracks the evolution of his thinking about China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia—and the attitudes he maintained toward each—from the 1960s until the end of his life. The chapter offers a balance sheet of the strengths and weaknesses of his approach to East Asia. Finally, it discusses the current policy relevance of the key issues Kennan confronted in the region and his response to them.

Tourism is a leading sector in developing process of many countries. For Bali, tourism contributes more than 30 percent on the formation of Bali’s Regional Domestic Product. To assure tourism at this island will run in sustainable manner, three aspects have to be considered. This research is aimed to classify the positive as well as the negative effects of socio-cultural dimension arose from tourists activities at coastal area of Badung regency of Bali. A hundred of local community leaders at North Kuta district were selected and their perception regarding effect of tourism on socio-cultural aspect were collected on June – September 2017 and  analysed by using factor analysis. Three groups were identified as the positive effects i.e. (a) women empowerment as the economic agents for the family; (b) the increasing of Balinese values; and (c) the raising of community capacity building in developing culture-creative products. Viewed from the burden of cost, we found the potency of increasing the social as well as family conflicts because of different perspectives in viewing tourism.

ABSTRACT: 2017-226 Fa’a-Samoa (the Samoan way) is a living tradition and continues to define the Samoan way of life. It is the foundation of Polynesia’s oldest culture - dating back some 3,000 years. Fa’a-Samoa is interconnected with Samoan lands and waters and by sharing the intact and vibrant traditions, values, and legends that connect the Samoan people to the land and sea, the local community plays an INTEGRAL role in the protection and preservation of natural and cultural resources of the area. Fa’a-Samoa places great importance on the dignity and achievements of the group rather than individuals. On April 14, 2016, the 62 ft. FV NO1 JI HYUN lost the main engines and grounded off the west side of Aunu’u Island in the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa (NMSAS). This area is of ecological and cultural significance for the local residents using hook-and-line, casting nets, spearfishing (non-scuba assisted) and other non-destructive fishing methods including those traditionally used for sustenance and cultural purposes such as gleaning, ‘enu and ola. The village on Aunu’u was extremely wary of inclusion of the waters of Aunu’u in the expansion of the sanctuary being concerned about loss of control of their traditional uses of the nearshore environment. In what became an extension of Fa’a-Samoa, the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the American Samoa Territorial government worked, together to address both the pollution hazards from the incident and the impact to the coral reef ecosystem even after the fuel was removed. While a relatively straight forward response were it to happen in the continental U.S., severe weather (Tropical Cyclone Amos), high winds and swells, limitations on site access, daylight high tides, and availability of resources to include tugs, tow lines and trained personnel made this quite challenging. Three removal attempts occurred under Oil Pollution Act (OPA) authorization and three efforts occurred under the National Marine Sanctuaries Act (NMSA), with guidance from a professional salvage master. This prolonged 4-month response has prompted some new dialogue and hopefully new commitment to increase preparedness and spill response capabilities within the territory. The designation of the NMSAS allowed for the use of the combined authorities of OPA and the NMSA, forging new path that protects and preserves both the natural and cultural resources of the region from the impacts of pollution and from future groundings whether large or small.

In this paper, the authors follow the history of development of anthropology of tourism from the 1960s to the present. In addition to the distinct methodology (ethnographic field work), the essential aspect of anthropological study of tourism is an emphasis on the socio-cultural dimension of tourism. Within the anthropological research of tourism, the research interest is focused on understanding the social and cultural nature of tourism.

<p>This paper is a research result examining the development model of community-based free health services to the poor (dhuafa) at Pos Sehat Al Ikhwan, Parung-Bogor. The writer used the Rothman and Glen’s theory to analize the case. This study used the local community development model. It is aimed to build the economic autonomy of community, in which they could determine and meet their own needs by using creative and operative processes. Having completed the mentoring process conducted by Da'wah and Communication Faculty, “Pos Sehat Al Ikhwan” attempts to maintain the continuity of health services for the dhu'afa in Bojong Indah, Parung, Bogor by strengthening network of the similar healthcare services being performed by advanced institutions to support the operational of “Pos Sehat”. Some of those are the health service of At Taqwa Mosque, and free health services of Dompet Dhu'afa which is until now still help advocating the “Pos Sehat Al Ikhwan” through connecting the Dompet Dhuafa donors with the “Pos Sehat Al-Ikhwan”.</p><p align="center"><strong>***</strong></p><p>Paper ini merupakan hasil penelitian yang mengkaji tentang Model Pengembangan Masyarakat berbasis layanan kesehatan Cuma-Cuma untuk kaum Dhuafa, dengan mengangkat kasus yang terjadi di Pos Sehat Al Ikhwan, Parung-Bogor. Analisis mengenai model pengembangan masyarakat pada  layanan Kesehatan Pos Sehat Al Ikhwan menggunakan teori dari Rothman dan kawan-kawan maupun Glen. Penelitian ini merupakan model pengembangan masyarakat lokal. Model ini bertujuan untuk membangun kemandirian masyarakat, dimana masyarakat sendiri yang mendefinisikan dan memenuhi kebutuhan mereka sendiri dengan menggunakan proses-proses yang kratif dan operatif. Upaya yang dilakukan oleh Pos Sehat Al Ikhwan untuk menjaga keberlangsungan layanan kesehatan untuk kaum dhu’afa di Desa Bojong Indah, Parung, Bogor setelah selesainya proses pendampingan yang dilakukan oleh Fakultas Dakwah dan Komunikasi yaitu dengan memperkuat jaringan pada layanan kesehatan mandiri yang dilakukan oleh lembaga yang sudah maju untuk mendukung operasional Pos sehat, antara lain dengan Layanan Kesehatan Masjid At Taqwa Bintaro, dan juga Layanan Kesehatan Cuma-Cuma Dompet Dhua’afa yang hingga sekarang melakukan pendampingan pada pos sehat Al Ikhwan melaui mekanisme menghubungkan donatur Dompet Dhuafa dengan pos sehat Al Ikhwan.</p>
