Since the turn of the century, there has been a growth in the use of e-business by both large and small companies worldwide, a trend that has been given further impetus by the move to online trading in the COVID-19 pandemic era. For small companies, there are the potential benefits of increased efficiencies and market share gain, associated with the re-engineering of selling and marketing processes; but in developing countries, such as Nigeria, research into how small businesses are using e-business systems and technologies is limited. This article builds upon earlier case study research in the Nigerian small business sector to develop a framework for e-business strategy development, implementation and review. Using an inductive approach, data was collected from six small businesses, using interviews and questionnaires, to profile the e-business operations of these companies. This study found that e-business strategy was generally lacking in these companies, but interview material was used to support the development and validation of the strategy framework, which provides a process and a checklist for small businesses pursuing e-business initiatives in developing world environments.

Small businesses are often considered important to a nation’s economy. In Nigeria, the small business sector contributes about 48% to the GDP, and there is an increasing effort to support the small business sector as a way of combatting societal ills. Within the last decade, there has been a global increase in the use of e-business by both large and small companies. Today, it is generally acknowledged that e-business provides a range of opportunities for small businesses to operate and compete effectively; however, in developing countries such as Nigeria, there is very limited research on e-business adoption in the small business sector. This thesis examines the adoption of e-business technologies and processes in Nigerian small businesses. Using an inductive approach, informed by a case study strategy, a longitudinal study of six small businesses in Lagos, Nigeria was conducted. Data was collected using interviews and questionnaires, and both thematic analysis and framework analysis were utilised to analyse the cases. Research results indicate that small businesses in Nigeria are utilising e-business systems. Key issues impacting upon e-business adoption and eight critical influencing factors that affect adoption were identified. Based on the case study findings, a framework for the development and implementation of e-business strategy in the Nigerian small business sector was developed and validated. This framework will be of value to small business owners involved in e-business operations, and also provides a basis for follow-up research in developing world countries.

Environmental Social Responsibility (ESR) is a notion, where business integrates environmental concerns in their operations and the interaction with stakeholders, without compromising profit. To this day, ESR studies are limited to areas of ethics, society and employees while literature is blunt on its impact on societies, consumer behaviour and governments. SMEs in developing countries are not spared their approach to ESR as a sustainability strategy. SMEs’ approach seems to digress from leverage on loyalty which emanates from their nearness to communities who in turn are potential customers. This paper takes a closer look at SMEs’ approach to ESR driven by SME business owners’ perception towards ESR. The paper will take account of SMEs’ behavioural response towards ESR and establish whether they regard ESR a strategic sustainability approach with long-term positive bottom-line benefits. Results were attained through assessing perceptions of SMEs towards ESR; assessing impact practice of ESR by SMEs; exploring factors that undermining practise of ESR by SMEs. A mixed approach was adopted where data was obtained using face to face interviews. Results showed that the majority of SME business owners had a negative approach towards the practice of ESR. SMEs believe ESR was mainly for large corporations since their operations were hideously affecting the environment. As new knowledge, recommendations from this paper will be shared with Chambers of Commerce in Africa developing countries. Some of the recommendations were that the chambers of commerce, local authorities must proactively support SMEs to practise ESR through awareness workshops, train and share the ESR strategy alignment with business strategy.

This study aims to determine whether or not the impact of business size on business model building and business performance perceived owner. This research used a quantitative-qualitative approach with Survey Method. The study was conducted in Apparel industry in Bandung City in 2017. The business model used to evaluate is Business Model Canvas (BMC). Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to test the differences between micro business and small business on each of BMC building blocks. The results showed that BMC building blocks between Micro Business and Small Buisness differed on two blocks, ie Channels and Revenue Streams, while the other seven blocks were not different significantly. It can be interpreted that the business model on Micro Businesses is generally slightly different with Small Businesses, or in other words the business strategy is relatively the same. However, the Business Model applied to Small Business with excellence in marketing channels and revenue streams compared to Micro Business, has resulted in a higher level of owner satisfaction on the performance of its business.

Promoting savings and providing a basis for lending to the poor is a growing concern in many developing countries. Cameroon has a culture of savings mobilisation known as njangi/tontine. The njangi is contributions given to members in a rotating form at the end of every sitting, and tontine is voluntary savings held by the group. This study reveals that njangi/tontine groups only lend money to group members and suggests that a micro village bank known as MC2 could be used as guarantor to ensure that group monies lent to non-group members are repaid. Encouragement and improvement in the function of such voluntary savings could promote the creation of small businesses in the country.  The Cameroonian government needs to improve fighting corruption and a functional justice system to ensure security.

Many of the most influential accounts of the growth in the numbers of new businesses being started and the general increase in the economic significance of the small-business sector draw upon flexible specialisation theory, which explains such trends in terms of the breakup of the mass market for standardised goods and services and the consequent emergence of a variety of smaller niche markets capable of exploitation by new or small businesses. In this paper our purpose is to suggest that the opportunities for new firm formation and growth arising from such changes may be more circumscribed than have hitherto been acknowledged. Drawing upon evidence from the UK brewing industry, which has seen the creation of many hundreds of new breweries during the past twenty years, we highlight the role of distribution channels as a significant barrier to the growth of the small-business sector. Changes to the regulatory environment (the Beer Orders) in an attempt by government to improve the competitiveness of the UK brewing industry have, paradoxically, had the opposite effect to that intended, and so have failed to increase market opportunities for microbrewers. Future research must give greater attention to the role of distribution in order to achieve a better understanding of the changing structure and spatial organisation of production.

Entrepreneurs have been characterized according to recognizable types according to attendant concerns and motivations. Within the small business sector of ecotourism, entrepreneurs must balance competing goals pertaining to business objectives, lifestyle aspirations and, most importantly, sustainable environmental practices. This study reports how ecotourism eco-entrepreneurs perceive and manage these goals, consistent with concerns and motivations, based on semi-structured interviews of small business operators. The findings show that eco-entrepreneurs’ social and sustainable characteristics are critical to overcome financially challenging and complex operating environments whilst also delivering a desired lifestyle. As a business strategy, eco-entrepreneurs were found to deliberately maintain small, low-impact ecotourism operations consistent with identified eco-values. Looking forward, eco-entrepreneurs forecast imminent threats to the ecotourism sector through uncontrolled development and mass-tourism business access to sensitive natural areas. If unresolved, this process will replace eco-entrepreneurs in small ecotourism operators with traditional profit-oriented entrepreneurs delivering undifferentiated and high-impact nature-based tourism experiences.

There are different attitudes towards small business definition. Basically, the laws of the countries are based on the criteria on the basis of which this or that enterprise belongs to the small business sector. However, in EU countries, small and medium enterprises are considered as small businesses and they are considered in one context. The concept of small and medium business combines number of employees, annual turnover and annual balance. The official definition of small and medium enterprises in Georgia is partially in line with EU standards. The concepts of small business and micro business are established only in terms of tax policy, while in institutional and quantitative or qualitative terms its definition is not officially definite.

The article considers the role of small business in terms of the present-day global economy and analyses the problems of identifying an optimal correlation between small and large businesses in the open-type economic systems. The authors describe the features of small enterprises in performing economic activities and substantiate the necessity and expediency of cooperation between large and small companies in the field of technological innovations. Foreign experience has proved the effectiveness and perspectiveness of incorporating of small businesses in the activities of large companies, one of the components of country's successful economic development as a whole. However, despite the emerging positive trend, this area is still not given due attention in Russia. The authors investigate the historical features of the Russian small business system that have left a mark on its interrelations with large business entities and bring up an issue of the necessity of mastering the state support of the small business sector in our country and pay a sufficiently more attention to the issues of cooperation and mutual support of small and large businesses.

Abstract The main objective of this study was to demonstrate the challenges of small businesses during corona virus pandemic in developing countries specifically in Ethiopia. Methodologically, the study deployed secondary data analysis followed descriptive research design. Also, this study was conducted through both qualitative and quantitative research approach. The secondary data analysis result shows that many small and large businesses are suffering challenges and this unprecedented coronavirus crisis has caused destruction for many businesses in the globe and it is challenging to survive with reduced revenue, jobs lost and life slowing down and weak marketing performance even difficult to keep a calm head and their business alive. To support these businesses the government should use different mechanisms by cooperating with wealthy peoples and other non-governmental organizations. Besides, the small business owners should manage expectations and communicate with staff, suppliers, banks, and customers throughout this coronavirus frightening. Reduce expenses, be open to their employees about their finances and keep marketing, use different alternatives to deliver their product and recover from the crisis.

The paper examines approaches to boosting small businesses by solving financial and economic problems of business functioning. The subject of the research is the factors that stimulate business development in tough economic circumstances. The purpose of the research was to identify the factors affecting the development of small businesses and ways of boosting their activities. To this end, a SWOT-analysis matrix for a small organization has been developed. The factors hampering the development of small businesses are revealed including reduced investment, lack of cooperation between large and small companies, significant tax burden on small companies, difficulties in obtaining loans and other sources of financing, insufficient financial support from the state, inefficient microfinance system, scarce introduction of standard leasing schemes into small businesses. As a result of the research, small business promotion policies have been suggested to spur the activities of small business entities. It is concluded that at present the tools available for boosing the small business activities are not used in the full range.
