The Karl Nikolayevich Kahls art work takes a special place in the artistic life of the Far East in the 1910 – 1930 years. The formation of the regional school of landscape and manifestation of impressionism are connected with his name according to the researchers opinions. He is one of the few artists, who came to Vladivostok being a formed artist with the professional artistic education (Dusseldorf Art Academy, 1892 – 1898) and with the impressive list of exhibitions, among which there is the exhibition in the halls of the Imperial Art Academy and the World Exhibition in St. Louis (the USA). To the present day the artists art work before coming to Vladivostok, is still poorly studied despite his active exhibition activities and works, kept in the Museum of Art in Toledo (the USA) and in other state and private collections.

The Far East was an important economic direction in European politics of the second half of the XIX century. Closed for centuries from the outside world Japan became the object of attention of the West. An American squadron under the command of M. Perry arrived on the coast of Japan in 1853 to conclude a trade treaty with it and put an end to isolation. The «discovery» of the land of the Rising Sun became a significant event in world history which couldn’t pass unnoticed. The European press published reports about the progress and results of the USA expedition, about the mission of the Russian Empire under the command of E. V. Putyatin, pursuing the same goals, and ones about Japan, a little-known country for Europe, whose culture and art admired the European public. The article examines the publications of the British newspaper The Illustrated London News in 1853-1854, devoted to Japan. The author analyzes the image of the country which was presented to the Victorian readers, highlights the aspects that are most interesting to the authors of the articles and the tone with which the notes are written. The press of the Victorian era helps to look at the world through the eyes of contemporaries of Queen Victoria and to identify the features of the concept of the land of the Rising sun.

The project aims at a detailed review of the published Chinese studies of rock art. The petroglyphs are extremely instructive; however, they remain largely unknown outside of China. These data are of particular relevance to Russian archaeologists as the petroglyphs of Northern, Northwestern, and Northeastern China share many similarities with the rock art of the neighboring territories of Southern Siberia, Mongolia, and the Far East. The paper briefly presents the key stages of the field study of Chinese rock art and the main findings. The authors also list the unimplemented developments, which may serve as a basis for future expeditions.

From the onset, South African amateur wrestling, under the auspices of the SA Amateur Wrestling Union and its successors, was organized along racial lines and, under apartheid, it continued to cater exclusively to white amateurs. By 1970, it was suspended from the International Amateur Wrestling Federation. Denied participation in international competition, it resorted to rebel and boycott-busting tours involving a number of sympathetic countries and individuals in Europe, the Americas, and the Far East. Organized mostly clandestinely, it succeeded in offering international competition to the South African national wrestling team for almost two decades. One program, the Oregon Wrestling Cultural Exchange, was particularly strong. This US-based program generated strong opposition from the Amateur Athletics Association, the International Wrestling Federation, and several anti-apartheid organizations. It survived until the end of the 1980s, when the USA Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act (1986) and the campaigns of the anti-apartheid movement closed it down.

Formation in the Far East of the USSR in the 1970th of a large new center of the National Academy of Sciences created the preconditions for activating the processes of intellectual support and scientific support for the development of this territory. Of great importance for solving the applied regional problems was organization of a specialized Institute of Economic Research, which adopted as a program of activities, on the one hand, preparation of theoretical and methodological tools for the analysis and forecasting of spatial processes, and, on the other hand, the use of academic developments for solving national economic problems. For 50 years, practically in all strategic projects of regional development, ERI FEB RAS was one of the active participants. At the same time, it became an authoritative participant in international research carried out by scientific and expert organizations in the North-Eastern Asia countries and the Asia Pacific. Reputation of the established scientific school of spatial studies as one of the leading in the country has determined the Institute's key role in consolidating the scientific potential of the Far East and in increasing its effectiveness. At the same time, ERI FEB RAS has taken a leading position in training the highly qualified specialists for the region who works in academic, industrial and university science, state and municipal authorities, and large business structures. Recognition of the task of developing the Far East as a national priority of Russia for the long term gives a new impetus to the development of research in the region, expanding the possibilities for implementing the ideas of scientific school that has developed in the ERI FEB RAS, and improving the processes of modeling, forecasting and strategic management of the economy.
