Normalization of innate immunity factors when using sea water solution in patients with infectious rhinosinusitis

The data on modern approaches to the modulation of factors of innate immunity and oxidative stress when using a hypertonic sea water solution in patients with infectious rhinosinusitis are presented. It has been established that the use of a nasal spray of a hypertonic solution of sea water can shorten the treatment time, reduce the number of relapses of acute rhinosinusitis, restore the status of neutrophilic granulocytes on the surface of the nasal mucosa, and reduce the content of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

The evolution of karyotypically stabilized short-lived (SL) and long-lived (LL) cytoraces in the laboratory have been established and validated through our previous lifespan studies. In the present investigation, we examined the possible reason(s) for the differential longevity among selected members of SL and LL cytoraces, employing the well known paraquat (PQ) resistance bioassay. Exposure of these races to varying concentrations of PQ revealed relatively higher resistance among LL cytoraces than SL cytoraces, as evident by the lower incidence of mortality. Biochemical analysis for endogenous markers of oxidative stress revealed that LL-2 cytorace exhibited lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels, higher activity levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and coupled with higher levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) compared with the levels found in SL-2 cytorace. These findings suggest that the higher susceptibility of SL cytoraces to PQ challenge may be, at least in part, related to the higher endogenous levels of oxidative stress markers. Although the precise mechanisms responsible for the longer longevity among LL cytoraces of the nasuta–albomicans complex of Drosophila merits further investigation, our data suggest that the relatively longer lifespan may be related to the status of endogenous markers that renders them more resistant towards oxidative-stress-mediated lethality, as evident in the PQ assay.

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose could induce liver damage and lead to acute liver failure. The treatment of APAP overdoses could be improved by new therapeutic strategies. Thymus spp., which has many beneficial effects and has been used in folk medicine, is one such potential strategy. In the present study, the hepatoprotective activity of the main constituents of Thymus spp., carvacrol and thymol, were evaluated in light of APAP-induced hepatotoxicity. We hoped to understand the hepatoprotective mechanism of these agents on the antioxidant system and pro-inflammatory cytokines in vitro. Dose-dependent effects of thymol and carvacrol (25, 50, and 100 µM) were tested on cultured HepG2 cells. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) was tested as positive control. We showed that APAP inhibited HepG2 cell growth by inducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Incubating APAP-exposed HepG2 cells with carvacrol and thymol for 24 h ameliorated this inflammation and oxidative stress. We also evaluated alanine transaminase and lactate dehydrogenase levels of HepG2 cells. We found that thymol and carvacrol protected against APAP-induced toxicity in HepG2 cells by increasing antioxidant activity and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin 1β. Taking together high-dose thymol and carvacrol treatment has an effect close to NAC treatment in APAP toxicity, but thymol has better treatment effect than carvacrol.

Prevention of acute kidney injury caused by drugs is still a clinical problem to be solved urgently. Astaxanthin (AST) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are important marine-derived active ingredients, and they are reported to exhibit renal protective activity. It is noteworthy that the existing forms of AST in nature are mainly fatty acid-acylated AST monoesters and diesters, as well as unesterified AST, in which DHA is an esterified fatty acid. However, no reports focus on the different bioactivities of unesterified AST, monoesters and diesters, as well as the recombination of DHA and unesterified AST on nephrotoxicity. In the present study, vancomycin-treated mice were used to evaluate the effects of DHA-acylated AST monoesters, DHA-acylated AST diesters, unesterified AST, and the recombination of AST and DHA in alleviating nephrotoxicity by determining serum biochemical index, histopathological changes, and the enzyme activity related to oxidative stress. Results found that the intervention of DHA-acylated AST diesters significantly ameliorated kidney dysfunction by decreasing the levels of urea nitrogen and creatinine, alleviating pathological damage and oxidative stress compared to AST monoester, unesterified AST, and the recombination of AST and DHA. Further studies revealed that dietary DHA-acylated AST esters could inhibit the activation of the caspase cascade and MAPKs signaling pathway, and reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These findings indicated that the administration of DHA-acylated AST esters could alleviate vancomycin-induced nephrotoxicity, which represented a potentially novel candidate or therapeutic adjuvant for alleviating acute kidney injury.

Sea water resources are extensive and can be used to extinguish fires, but their corrosiveness is a major problem. Using the method of electrochemical workstation, the electrochemical corrosion behavior of aluminum sheet in artificial sea water solution and silica-coated artificial seawater was studied; by analyzing the surface morphology, polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the electrochemical corrosion behavior of aluminum sheets under different immersion times and different immersion media is obtained. The conclusion is that the coating of nanosilica powder has a certain corrosion protection effect on artificial seawater.

I. Direct microscopic examination of the unfertilised eggs of Psammechinus miliaris and Teredo norvegica merely shows the existence of a thin, granule-free zone covering the surface. Whether this is continuous with the general cytoplasm or not cannot be made out with certainty by direct observation. 2. A cone of clear material can be drawn out from the surface of the unfertilised egg of both species by means of the microdissection needle. A definite membrane cannot be separated in this way. 3. Hypertonic solutions cause the egg of Psammechinus to shrink smoothly at first and later to become wrinkled. This is consistent with the view that the egg is surrounded by an elastic, solid layer which is normally in a state of tension. 4. Cytolysis of the egg of Psammechinus in tap water is not accompanied by bursting. The egg swells and is perfectly smooth and spherical when cytolysis is completed. This points to the existence of an elastic, solid surface layer. 5. Plasmolysis of the egg of Teredo is of the type here called "polyhedral."The irregular shape of the egg in the hypertonic solution is only temporary, as a clear membrane separates from the concave surfaces and the egg then becomes more or less spherical. 6. The protoplasm of the plasmolysed egg of Teredo behaves as a viscous fluid. 7. Cytolysis of the egg of Teredo in tap water is accompanied by bursting and dispersion of the entire cell contents. A crumpled membrane alone remains. 8. It is concluded that the unfertilised egg of both Teredo norvegica and Psammechinus miliaris is surrounded by an elastic vitelline membrane which is much a Vitelline Membrane of the Egg of P. miliaris and of T. norvegica 105 thicker in the former than in the latter. The vitelline membrane in both cases is tightly attached to the egg surface. 9 . In calcium-free sea water the fertilisation membrane is elevated normally in Psammechinus miliaris. It does not harden, however, and gradually sinks back on to the surface of the egg owing, apparently, to the loss by diffusion of the osmotically active substance in the perivitelline space. It can be elevated a second time by puncturing the surface of the egg and allowing some of the cell contents to penetrate into the perivitelline space. 10. It is suggested that one action of hypertonic solutions in inducing artificial parthenogenesis may be to cause a loosening of the attachment of the vitelline membrane to the egg surface.

Recently, ZrN has been attracting interest for its excellent corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, high hardness, good lubricity and ductility. Although tribological study of ZrN coating has been carried out extensively, investigation related to corrosion of ZrN film is limited. In view of this and in view of possible applications of ZrN film in several engineering components, the present investigation has been undertaken to evaluate the corrosion response of ZrN film in seawater solution, Hank's solution, 0.5M H2SO4solution and 0.5M HCl solutions. Towards that purpose, potentiostatic, open circuit potential and potentiodynamic study of ZrN film deposited on plain carbon steel has been carried out in all these solutions. Results indicate that stable protective film is formed on the surface of ZrN coating in all these solution except 0.5M H2SO4 solution. The formation of protective film on ZrN coating is fastest in sea water solution and it is slowest in the Cl¯ ions containing media, 0.5 M HCl. The corrosion current is highest for 0.5M H2SO4 acid solution and least for Hank's solution.

AbstractBentonite-based buffer materials play an important safety role in engineered barriers planned for use in geological disposal repositories for radioactive high-level waste (HLW) in Japan. The effectiveness of buffer materials is dependent on the status of groundwater saturation during resaturation of the repository. Accordingly, it is important to determine the behaviour of buffer materials during saturation and predict post-saturation conditions such as the distribution of residual dry density and chemical alteration.In this study, the rate of groundwater uptake into a buffer material was determined to clarify the behaviour of the material during the saturation process. As mechanical changes and chemical alteration of buffer materials are generated by groundwater permeation, knowledge of the water uptake rate is necessary for the prediction of post-permeation conditions. In the experiment reported here, one-dimensional permeation by distilled water and a NaCl water solution at a constant rate was monitored over a period of more than seven years. The results indicated that the seepage and saturation front moved in proportion to the square root of the seepage time. The coefficient of the relationships between the seepage and the saturation fronts with time of the reference bentonite used in Japan was determined.

The aim of this study is to analyze whether melatonin administration influenced the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) activity, proinflammatory cytokines expression, and oxidative response in the basilar artery after SAH. A total of 48 rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: control group, SAH group, SAH + vehicle group, and SAH + melatonin group. All SAH animals were subjected to injection of autologous blood into cisterna magna twice on day 0 and day 2. The melatonin was administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 5 mg/kg/12 h simultaneously with SAH from day 0 to day 5. The basilar arteries were extracted on day 5 after SAH. As a result, we found that vascular inflammation and oxidative stress were induced in all SAH animals. In animals given melatonin, basilar arterial NF-κB and pro-inflammatory cytokines were decreased in comparison to vehicle-treated animals. Measures of oxidative stress also showed significant downregulation after melatonin treatment. Furthermore, administration of melatonin prevented vasospasm on day 5 following SAH. In conclusion, post-SAH melatonin administration may attenuate inflammatory response and oxidative stress in the spasmodic artery, and this may be one mechanism involved in the therapeutic effect of melatonin on the subsequent vasospasm after SAH.
