Venice’s reconquest of Marano in 1542 was a key moment in the history of the Republic. The fortress of Marano was in fact at the top of its glory between the XV and XVI century, when it was contested between Austria and Venice. When it fell in the hands of Austria in 1513, Venice tried to reconquest it with every possible means. After years of unsuccessful attempts, the feat was carried out by Beltrame Sacchia, an ambitious and adventurous merchant from Udine, who occupied the fortress in 1542 in name of the King of France. This article analyses the repercussions of Marano’s reconquest on European political equilibrium. What happened on the morning of January 2, 1542, as well as making a turning point in the boundary dynamics between Venice and the Austrian, deeply damaged the diplomatic relations between the main powers of Europe: the Venetian Republic, France, the Empire and the Ottomans.

The Civil War marked a turning point not only in the history of the republic, but the history of citizenship in the United States as well. But there is more to this moment than might appear on the surface. What this book stakes out are a new set of questions about what it meant to be a citizen, how Americans thought about it, and just how much the rapid development of two warring nation-states brought the relationship between citizens and states into such sharp relief. By placing ideas about obligation at the center of a history of citizenship during the Civil War era, The Loyal Republic charts new ground.

Grundtvig and European culturea lecture by Jørgen ElbekThe main idea in this paper is that Plato, Goethe and Grundtvig share an anthropology that seems to be identical with the yoga concept of invisible man; but that Plato expresses his through a philosophy of society (in the Republic), Goethe through a philosophy of nature (in The Metamorphosis o f Plants) and Grundtvig through a philosophy of history (in, amongst others, The Pleiades o f Christendom). In the case of Plato there is a structural merger between the Republic and the series of 30 or so dialogues that constitute his life’s work. In Goethe’s case there is a harmony between his picture of life in Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship) and his own biography (for example, Mignon’s death corresponds to Goethe’s own renunciation in connection with Die Wahlverwandtschaften (pub. in English in 1914 as Elective Affinities) and Harfner’s death corresponds to the resignation of Marienbadelegie). In the case of Grundtvig, there is a correspondence between his subdivision of church and world history and the well-known phases of his own life: thus the history of the Jews, the Greeks and the Romans corresponds to the years 1801-10, 1810-17, and 1817-23, characterized by imagination, emotion and reason respectively. The arrival of Christianity coincides with the turning-point in Grundtvig’s life in 1824; whilst the history of recent times, moving through the Lutheran and the Grundtvigian to the future church corresponds to the years 1825-32, 1832-44 and 1844-67, characterized by faith, hope and love respectively. These are in turn incorporated into Christmas, Easter and Whitsun, or the creed, baptism and Holy Communion.

The Spanish Civil War played a unique role in the Soviet Union’s geo-political strategies in the second half of the 1930s. The conflict marked the first occasion that Moscow participated in a foreign war beyond its traditional spheres of influence. But Soviet involvement in the Spanish war went far beyond the sale of armor and aviation to the beleaguered Spanish Republic. While Moscow organized and supported the creation of the International Brigades, on the cultural front, the Soviets sought to roll out a broad program of propaganda, employing film, poster art and music to link the destinies of the Slavic and Hispanic peoples. If scholars have succeeded in recent years to rewrite the history of many components of Soviet participation in the Spanish Civil War, diplomatic relations between the Republic and Moscow remain an unexplored theme. This is the conclusion of a two-part article that explores declassified, unpublished official documents, as well as memoirs, newsreels, private letters and the press, to offer the first narrative history of the Republican embassy in Moscow. In part one, the diplomatic rapprochement between the USSR and Spain in 1933 was explored as a prelude to the exchange of ambassadors following the outbreak of the civil war in summer 1936. The posting of the young Spanish doctor Marcelino Pascua to a newly recreated Moscow embassy was then examined in detail, up to the end of summer 1937. In the second part, the successes, failures and denouement of Pascua’s mission are set against the backdrop of the Republic’s dwindling fortunes in the civil war.
