The problem of waste processing of synthetic polymers makes scientific society look for biodestructors that can digest them. Recently there have appeared some studies that claimed that caterpillars Galleria mellonella L. can influence the integrity of synthetic polymers. In terms of evolution, this species is related to beehives and can digest bee wax. The capability of this insect to digest polyethylene is still under issue. During the research, it was analyzed how the addition of polyethylene to the artificial nutrient medium affects the biological parameters of Pyralidae when cultured in the laboratory. It was shown that adding polyethylene to the standard nutrient medium in proportions of 1/4 та 1/3 does not influence the biological parameters of the species. The viability of caterpillars and chrysalides stays within the control framework. Adding polyethylene to the artificial nutrient medium in proportions of 1/2 leads to 23% lower viability during the pupa phase. The viability of chrysalides was within control framework and their individual fertility did not differ significantly. When the artificial nutrient medium contained 3/4 of polyethylene, the viability of chrysalides decreased significantly by 61%. Increasing the quantity of polyethylene in the artificial nutrient medium led to the extinguished viability which means polyethylene cannot be digested (processed). In this case, the experiment showed a delay in the development and the population reproduction was impossible. In addition to that, the individual fertility of females decreased 6 times if compared to the control group. The development phase under the conditions when the artificial nutrient medium contained ½ of polyethylene was 30 days longer than the development phase of the control group. The sex correlation in this research was 44 % of females and 56 % of males on average. As the results demonstrated the decrease of biological parameters of Galleria mellonella species when using polyethylene, we can assert that caterpillars do not digest polyethylene but in their digestive system, they have enzymes or bacteria that can influence the integrity of polyethylene.

Oxfendazole is used as an antihelminthic drug in parasite infections of animals. Oxfendazole was added at different concentrations (0, 0.0015, 0.015, 0.15, and 1.5%) to artificial diet and the wax moth Galleria mellonella larvae were reared to 7th stage. The changes in metabolic enzymes activity in G. mellonella hemolymph tissue were investigated. It was found that the activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was increased which are cell damage biomarkers. The highest concentration of this antihelmintic was increased the enzme activity (ALT) from 329 ± 4.33 to 529. 5 ± 3.17 U/L. Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) enzyme activity was increased from 0.87 ± 0.1 to 4.32 ± 0.22 U/L. Creatine kinase (CK) and amylase (AMYL) activities were significantly increased in hemolymph of G. mellonella larvae fed with the highest oxfendazole concentration (1.5%) when compared to the control group. Our results indicate that oxfendazole can be used as an insecticide with a well-adjusted concentrations because of its low acute toxicity to humans and other non-target organisms.

Nematoides entomopatogênicos (NEPs) são alternativas eficientes para o controle de pragas. O emprego de novas técnicas da produção in vivo, permite o progresso da tecnologia de formulação de bioinseticidas. O objetivo do trabalho, foi avaliar a influência da luminosidade e do substrato na capacidade de infecção de juvenis infectantes (JIs) de Steinernema brazilense IBCBn 06, Steinernema carpocapsae IBCBn 02, Steinernema feltiae IBCBn 47 e Heterorhabditis amazonensis IBCBn 24 em lagartas de Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com quatro tratamentos e oito repetições. As parcelas, constituídas por placa de Petri com, substrato-areia e substrato-papel filtro, com e sem luminosidade, inoculados com suspensão de 1,5 mL contendo 400JIs e quatro lagartas de G. mellonella. O número de JIs foi quantificado após a mortalidade das lagartas. A taxa de infecção de JIs de S. carpocapsae IBCBn 02 e S. feltiae IBCBn 47 variaram de 2,14 a 3,28 e de 11,04 a 13,09 JIs/lagarta. O substrato-areia com e sem luminosidade permitiu a maior taxa de infeção dos JIs de S. brazilense IBCBn 06 de 7,86 e 9,44 JIs/lagarta, e 13,49 JIs/lagarta com luminosidade para H. amazonensis IBCBn 24. O substrato-areia, permite a maior taxa de infecção por JIs de NEPs.

Abstract Background Most people with dementia (PwD) are cared for at home, with general practitioners (GPs) playing a key part in the treatment. However, primary dementia care suffers from a number of shortcomings: Often, diagnoses are made too late and therapies by GPs do not follow the guidelines. In cases of acute crises, PwD are too often admitted to hospital with adverse effects on the further course of the disease. The aim of this study is to implement and evaluate a new GP-based, complex dementia care model, DemStepCare. DemStepCare aims to ensure demand-oriented, stepped care for PwD and their caregivers. Methods/design In a cluster randomized controlled trial, the care of PwD receiving a complex intervention, where the GP is supported by a multi-professional team, is compared to (slightly expanded) usual care. GPs are clustered by GP practice, with 120 GP practices participating in total. GP practices are randomized to an intervention or a control group. 800 PwD are to be included per group. Recruitment takes place in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. In addition, a second control group with at least 800 PwD will be formed using aggregated routine data from German health insurance companies. The intervention comprises the training of GPs, case management including repeated risk assessment of the patients’ care situation, the demand-oriented service of an outpatient clinic, an electronic case record, external medication analyses and a link to regional support services. The primary aims of the intervention are to positively influence the quality of life for PwD, to reduce the caregivers’ burden, and to reduce the days spent in hospital. Secondary endpoints address medication adequacy and GPs’ attitudes and sensitivity towards dementia, among others. Discussion The GP-based dementia care model DemStepCare is intended to combine a number of promising interventions to provide a complex, stepped intervention that follows the individual needs of PwD and their caregivers. Its effectiveness and feasibility will be assessed in a formative and a summative evaluation. AbstractHuman beta defensins (hBDs) may play an important role in the progression of lichen sclerosus (LS), due to their ability to induce excessive stimulation of extracellular matrix synthesis and fibroblast activation. The genetic ability of the individual to produce defensins, the presence of microbes influencing defensin production, and the sensitivity of microbes to defensins together regulate the formation of an ever-changing balance between defensin levels and microbiome composition. We investigated the potential differences in postmenopausal vaginal microbiome composition and vaginal hBD levels in LS patients compared to non-LS controls. LS patients exhibited significantly lower levels of hBD1 (p = 0.0003), and significantly higher levels of hBD2 (p = 0.0359) and hBD3 (p = 0.0002), compared to the control group. The microbiome of the LS patients was dominated by possibly harmful bacteria including Lactobacillus iners, Streptococcus anginosus or Gardnerella vaginalis known to initiate direct or indirect damage by increasing defensin level production. Our observations highlight that correcting the composition of the microbiome may be applicable in supplementary LS therapy by targeting the restoration of the beneficial flora that does not increase hBD2-3 production.

Nevertheless, the present study is the first to examine native or learner variation between imperative (e. g. ven ‘come’) and optative Spanish commands (e. g. que vengas ‘come’). We first performed a corpus analysis to determine the linguistic factors to manipulate in a contextualized task, which elicited commands from learners before and after four weeks abroad in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Their overall rates of selection and predictive factors were compared to local native speakers (NSs) and a control group of at-home learners.Results revealed that the abroad learners more closely approached NS rates of selection following the stay abroad. Nonetheless, for both learner groups conditioning by independent variables only partially approximated the NS system, which was more complex than previously suggested.

Depression is a disorder of representation and regulation of mood and emotion; it affects 5% of world population, in a year. Unlike normal loss and sadness feelings, major depression is persistant and it interferes significantly with thoughts, behaviour, emotions, activity and health of the individual. If untreated, depression can lead to suicide. Using family therapy in treating psychiatric patients is a must due to the significance that a family holds in individual and society life.Objective:Assesing family functionality in families with a member diagnosed according to DSM IV TR with depressive disorder; depression intensity was assesed with HDRS.Methods:A sample of 3o families (71 members); FFS assesses the most important and consistent five functioning areas: positive affect, comunication, conflicts, worries and rituals.Results:Values obtained in each of the 40 questions of the scale can give information on variables affecting the increase or decrease in subscales values. Positive affect 35,07, communication 37, conflicts 15,11, worries 40,77, rituals 45,03. The reuslts were compared to those obtained by assessin normal families from a control group of 132 families (323 members).Conclusions:Differences were noticed. Values obtained in our study represent the standard of functioning of families with a depressed member.

AbstractThe tachinid fly Exorista larvarum (L.) (Diptera: Tachinidae) is a polyphagous larval endoparasitoid that deposits its eggs on the host exoskeleton of lepidopteran and tenthredinid larvae. The attachment of larval E. larvarum and the formation of the respiratory funnel were studied during infestation in the last larval instar of the wax moth, Galleria mellonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The tachinid larvae burrow through the host integument after hatching, using their robust cephalopharyngeal skeleton, leaving a dark spot at the point of their penetration as a result of host cuticle melanization. Endoparasitoid penetration induces the host cellular defence, resulting in the formation of a haemocyte capsule consisting of multi-cellular sheaths. This enveloping capsule later undergoes melanization, which is mostly obvious towards the posterior part of the endoparasitoid. The endoparasitoid uses the host encapsulation response to build a respiratory funnel from the modified host integument, leading to the host surface. The encapsulated larva remains attached to the respiratory funnel via an anal hook and cuticular spines until fully developed. Additional immunohistochemical analyses were used to study host–parasitoid interactions. Indirect immunofluorescence showed no labelling of potential tachinid antigens and confirmed no effect on the surrounding host tissues. A simulated parasitization with coated polybead microspheres revealed the mortal impact of tachinid antigens to the host. Hosts injected with antigen-coated polybeads died as a consequence of an acute and extensive immunological response to the tachinid antigens and not due to the trauma caused by foreign objects inside their body.

  Introduction and Aim: Mental stress may impact dramatically on dynamic autonomic control on heart. Many studies have demonstrated association of high body mass index (BMI) with greater risk for cardiovascular disease with disturbance in autonomic neuronal activity. Analysis of Heart rate variability (HRV)during acute mental stress assesses the autonomic status of the individual. Hence, we aimed to study the effect of acute mental stress on time domain measures in obese adults.   Materials and Methods:Sixty male volunteers of 30 each in study group (obese individuals) and control group (non-obese individuals) were recruited for the study. A basal recording of ECG in lead II was done on all the individuals. Then they underwent mental arithmetic stress task for 5 minutes during which again ECG was recorded. The change in time domain measures of HRV during rest and stress task was analyzed and compared between both the groups.   Results: Analysis of time domain measures of HRV revealed a statistically significant increase (p ? 0.001) in mean heart rate in both obese and non-obese individuals, while rMSSD(root mean square differences of successive RR interval) and SDNN (standard deviation of all NN intervals) showed a statistically significant (p? 0.001) decrease in obese individuals and non-obese individuals did not show any statistically significant change during the mental stress task.   Conclusion: In response to acute mental stress there was increased heart rate in both the groups. But the autonomic neuronal activity differed by way of sympathetic dominance in non-obese individuals and parasympathetic withdrawal in obese individuals.
