The article is devoted to the study of COVID-19 as a linguistic phenomenon on the material of The Economist (March-May 2020). The article notes that in the modern world, characterized by critical moments of the civilization plan, the study of the foundations of the formation of society, the role of information technology and new discursive practices of social interaction is of particular importance. The beginning of 2020 was marked by the coronavirus epidemic, which turned into a pandemic. This token and its synonyms are introduced into the discourse of the media, which allows us to consider them in the discursive context expressing changes in public consciousness during the pandemic. The article emphasizes that during periods of social stability, the processes of language development proceed gradually, and language changes affect individual parts of the system. At a time of social upheaval, the processes of language development are accelerating, an impression of chaos and instability is created. In accordance with the peculiarities of the situation in society, the psychological attitudes of the masses, their linguistic taste and flair of the language are changing.A comprehensive linguistic analysis of the research material made it possible to establish that the lexeme COVID-19 in the English mass media discourse acquires additional connotations and serves to form an informational picture of the world that reflects the national-cultural characteristics of worldview and the system of axiological relations.

This article investigates V. P. Aksyonov’s argument with L. N. Tolstoy about the role of personality in history in his trilogy Generations of Winter. The saga protagonists’ spiritual awakening and self-identification are discussed in the context of Tolstoy’s view on the activity of the general mass of people who take part in a historical event and determine its outcome. This allows to elicit Aksyonov’s view on man’s personal responsibility under Stalinism. The main sources of this paper are Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Aksyonov’s Generations of Winter. Its purpose is to explain Aksyonov’s artistic conceptualization of the role of the masses and the individual under the Stalinist regime and in the Great Patriotic War. The major results of the research have been achieved by comparing the artistic devices employed by Tolstoy in fracturing the myth of Napoleon’s genius as leader of the general mass with Aksyonov’s approach in satirical portrayal of Stalin. The article explores Aksyonov’s contribution to the literary tradition of the grotesque, his utilization of the functions of the body “bottom” and of Russian popular demonic motifs in the depiction of Stalin. The paper’s author utilizes a comparative hermeneutical analysis and concludes that Aksyonov’s metaphor of “Stalinist hypnosis” is the writerly equivalent of Tolstoy’s conception of “swarm behavior”, and that Aksyonov’s argument with Tolstoy’s negation of the role of the individual in history is a postmodern playful ironic device, a means for his conceptualization and revision of Leo Tolstoy’s philosophic-historical view for the twentieth century.

Separate individual's disposition to take action does certainly not constitute a sufficient condition to engage in demonstrations. Doubtlessly, equal importance is due to organisational and institutional factors in society, and the individual's position in those. Ultimately, a demonstration is the result of a struggle between organizations for going control over individuals in order to support or defend their own objectives. In the mobilization process these organizations may make use of a diversity of mechanisms and techniques to control or to influence their members, as there are : the exploitation of the affective and instrumental ties binding the individual to the organization ; the access to - and the use of - the mass-media ; the use of selective communication by the organizational leaders and the induction of frustration. Special attention is given to the role of the militant and the characteristics of his language in the mobilization proces
