Writing is one of the English skills needed by engineering students to express their knowledge and skill relating to their major. Based on the researcher’s teaching experience, students still have low ability in writing. In this research, the researcher made an effort to improve their descriptive writing text in an engineering context. The aim was to increase their ability to make descriptive text using Genre Based Approach. The research was carried out in the Road and Bridge Planning Study Program in the Civil Engineering Department of a Polytechnic in Indonesia. The sample included the students of the study program. The design of the research was the Pre Test-Post Test Design. The result shows that the students’ writing ability can be increased by applying the GBA teaching procedure with adjustment to their major and level of English capability. This strategy can be used as an alternative to improve students’ ability to make descriptive texts in an engineering context.

ABSTRACT This present research conducted in Civil Engineering Department and reports the implementation of Suggestopedia Learning Method in developing students’ writing ability. The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the first semester of TKJJ Study Program in Civil Engineering Department of Politeknik Negeri Ambon can develop their writing ability through Suggestopedia Learning Method. A quasi-experimental design as a part a quantitative research employed in this study. The dates obtained through the Pretest and Posttest. The sample was using cluster random sampling. Based on the result of observation, it concluded that: The result of the data analysis showed that the teaching through suggestopedia improved significantly the writing ability of the first semester of TKJJ Study Program in Civil Engineering Department of Politeknik Negeri Ambon. It was proved by the mean score on pretest was 47.077 and the posttest was 79.35. In addition, after analyzing the data by using the test formula, the result of t-test value was 3.746 and t-table value 1,684. It means that the t-test value was greater than t-table value it indicated that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejecting. Therefore, the hypothesis of the research is the students’ writing ability that was taught through Suggestopedia Learning Method was better than the students who were taught through conversation method.

This study aims to find out whether 3-step-writing strategy could have a significant impact on the students 'writing results in descriptive writing and also to find out whether there is an impact of the interaction between 3-step-writing strategy on students' writing interest. The population in this study were Law Faculty students in the 2017-2018 academic year with a total of 25 students. In this study, sampling using purposive techniques that took two classes as samples and divided into two groups, namely: Experimental Group and Control Group. The Experimental Group learned to Write Descriptive by using 3-step-writing strategy. Data was collected by conducting tests (pre and post-tests) and questionnaires. The data obtained were analyzed using the T Test and Two-Way Anova Test with the help of the SPSS 22 Program. It showed significant different on students` English Writing achievement from pre-test to post-test and also from experimental and control group. Students also showed great interest on English Writing of Descriptive text by applying 3-step-writing strategy. It means that 3-step-writing strategy could improve students` English writing skill and could also  empower students to learn more.

English subject that is learnt in Mechanical Engineering Study Program is different from English subject learnt in other programs, relating to the aspects of target situation, students’ weaknesses, students’ wishes and their needs. This research aims to find out Mechanical Engineering students’ problems in learning English, students’ needs in learning English and the process of designing syllabus of English subject. This research is case study using qualitative approach. The research participants are 40 students of Mechanical Engineering in third semester, in the academic year of 2017/2018 and two English lecturers who teach in Mechanical Engineering Study Program. The instruments to collect the data are questionnaire, interview and documentation (students’ achievement). Data moreover are reduced, displayed and then conclusions are drawn. The research results show that English subject is needed in Mechanical Engineering department. Students’ needs in learning English related with material aspects of listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. In addition, the materials of mechanical engineering and application letter using English are also needed. Moreover, students’ problems in learning English are students’ lack confidence in mastering English both orally and in written. Students’ weaknesses in mastering pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary make English subject difficult to learn. In addition, they do not get used to reading and writing English texts. From the results, it is then recommended to review and design the syllabus of English for Mechanical Engineering which is suitable with students’ needs and give benefits for students and institution.

To write an ‘attention grabbing’ paragraph, the students should do a lot of practices in writing. However, the fact showed that writing skill was frightening and boring skill to learn as lecturers applied boring and monotonous teaching technique. Thus, the present research was mainly intended to answer the following questions: how effective is simultaneous roundtable in improving the students’ genre-based paragraph writing ability? and how do the students respond the application of simultaneous roundtable in teaching genre-based paragraph writing? The subjects of this research were two classes of the second semester students of English Education Study Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Mahasaraswati Denpasar University which consisted of 62 students altogether. The design of the present study was classroom action research which were carried out in three cycles. The progressing results of the pre-test, post-test 1, 2 and 3 confirmed that simultaneous roundtable was effective in improving genre-based paragraph writing ability. In addition, the results of the questionnaire showed that most of the subjects agreed on the application of simultaneous roundtable in teaching genre-based paragraph writing.

Writing skills are one of the skills that must be mastered by language learners. As an effort to improve writing skills, the researcher uses the Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach. The TBLT approach is carried out on 19 level 1 students of the English Literature study program in learning descriptive writing skills in English. The type of research conducted is Classroom Action Research (CAR) in collaboration with lecturers of Writing 1 class. The research is supported by qualitative and quantitative data to determine the students’ improvement in the process of learning descriptive writing using TBLT. The results show a significant increase in the results of descriptive writing tests conducted in the first and second cycles. In addition, the use of TBLT can motivate students in the learning process. The results of this study were obtained based on the grades of the descriptive writing tests, observations and questionnaires. The results of the post-test indicate an increase in the average student score to 85.6 from the average pre-test score of 62.2. Finally, the results of the questionnaire also show that almost all students agreed to use TBLT as a guide in Descriptive writing, and it has proven to be able to improve the students’ writing skills.

The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the use of juxtaposing pictures can improve the students’ writing ability especially in writing description. The researchers applied a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and one group post-test design. The subject of the research was the second year students of SMAN 3 Enrekang in academic year 2017-2018. The sample consisted of 32 students of XI IPA 1. The data were collected through writing test (pretest and post-test). To find out the effectiveness of juxtaposing pictures in improving writing ability, the researcher applied t-test analysis. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The value of t-test (9.09) was greater than the t-table (2.039) and degree of freedom (df) = 31. It is concluded that juxtaposing pictures is effective in improving the students’ writing ability in writing description.

The objective of the research was to find out and describe the improvement in writing skills through the Experience-based Learning Approach. The method of this research was classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles. The subject of this research was students of the 4th semester of English Education Study Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of UNIHAZ 2016/2017. The research instruments were the observation sheet, interview guidelines, questionnaire and test form. Based on the results of data analysis of pre-test and post-test shown the significant improvement. The student average increased by 13.7 points with an increase of 20%. Meanwhile, from cycle I to cycle II, the average writing ability of students increased by 2.4 points with a percentage increase of 80%. Based on the learning activities which have occurred the enhancing from the first to second cycles from this research findings, it showed that LEA could improve the students’ writing ability.

This research is a qualitative research with two variables. The classroom action research is conducted at phisics study program of Muhammadiyah University of Metro. The subject of this research is first semester students of physics study program. The number of the students is 22. The objective of this research was to know how cue cards technique improve the students’ writing ability in descriptive text. The researcher choose one class because they have problem in writing ability. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were collected from test (pre test and post test), observation. The result of this research can be seen from the average score of pre test (before treatment) was 61,86, in cycle 1 was 70,90 and in post test cycle 2 was 78. That was involved in upgrading maximally. It implied that cue cards technique can improve the students writing ability in descriptive text. In other words, the class had fulfilled criteria success of standard students competency from the school.It was supported by the observation of the students. From the result of the discussion, the researcher concludes that in this research there is an improvement student writing ability in descriptive text using cue cards technique at the students of physics academic year 2015/2016.Key Words : Descriptive Text, Writing Ability, Cue Cards Technique

University students have to be able towrite in English,the ability is not only expected to  English educations’ students but also for all students in University. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the comic-strip media in improving mechanical engineering students in writing ability. In this research, the research will be focus on the procedure text.This research applied quasi-experimental “pre-test post-test design”. It is conducted at the Muhammadiyah University of Metro in academic Year 2015/2016. The Population involved in this study is mechanical engineering students which consist of 60 students. The researcher took all the population as the sample of this study;30 students as experimental class and 30students as control class. The variables of this study are (1) CIRC Method with comic-strip media as independent variables, (2) Ability to write as the dependent variable. The instrument used in this study is the writing test. To analyze the data, researchers uses ttestformula.The results showed the value of  ttestTTable 3.57 and 2.00 (criterion 1) and 2.66 (criterion 2). From these results it can be concluded that the CIRC method through comic strips can improve writing ability in mechanical engineering students.

  This study aimed to investigate the effect of anonymous peer assessment on students’ writing ability. Quantitative approach was used in this study. Post-test only control group design was the design used in this experimental study. The post-test only control group design was designed to discover the purpose of this study which was to investigate the significant effect on writing ability between students who obtain feedback from anonymous peer assessment and students who obtain feedback from conventional assessment. The study was conducted at SMK PGRI 1 Singaraja. The eleventh grade students in Academic Year 2017/2018 were chosen as the population. The samples were 44 students from XI AP and XI UPW. The instruments used in this study were lesson plan, anonymous peer checklist, writing scoring rubric, and writing test. Writing scoring rubric and writing test were used to obtain the data through post-test while lesson plan and anonymous peer assessment were used during the treatment. The data then was analyzed by using SPSS 16. The results of the analysis show that (1) the mean score of the experimental group was 77.55 while the mean score of the control group was 68.77. (2) The t-observe was 3.892 and it exceeded the t-critical value which was 2.018. Therefore, based on the aforementioned results, it can be concluded that there was a significant difference on writing ability between the eleventh grade students who obtained feedback from anonymous peer assessment and those who obtained feedback from conventional assessment at SMK PGRI 1 Singaraja in academic year 2017/2018.
