Creation of new varieties that combine a complex of valuable traits, incl. the marketability and quality of fruits for updating the assortment of sweet cherry is an urgent direction of breeding research. The paper presents the results of a long-term work on the assessment of 12 varieties of sweet cherries of domestic and foreign breeding according to the main parameters of marketability and quality of fruits. The studies were carried out in 2015–2020 on the basis of the «Tsentralnoye» experimental production farm of the North Caucasian Federal Scientific Center of Horticulture, Viticulture, Winemaking. As a result of regional breeding and long-term variety study sweet cherry varieties of local breeding (Alaya, Volshebnitsa, Chernie glaza) and introduced varieties (Anonce, Vasilisa, Kroupnoplodnaya, Sweet Heart, Skina) with larger fruits (fruit weight of 8.5–12.0 g) were identified. These varieties correspond to world marketability standards. Varieties with high biochemical parameters have been revealed: vitamin C (10.9–13.0 mg/100 g) Volshebnitsa, Podarok leta, Anonce; vitamin P (81.6–116.0 mg/100 g) Volshebnitsa, Podarok leta, Kroupnoplodnaya; anthocyanins (213.5–390.0 mg/100 g) Madonna, Chernie glaza; sugars (14.2–15.2 %) Alaya, Volshebnitsa, Podarok leta; soluble solids (19.8–22.8 %) Alaya and Volshebnitsa. A greatest variation in parameters (Cv = 60 %) was noted in the number of anthocyanins from 87.0 in the Volshebnitsa variety to 390.0 mg/100 g in the Madonna variety. At the same time, the supposed direct correlation between the ripening period and the accumulation of sugars (R2 = 0.083) and dry matter (R2 = 0.107) was not revealed, due primarily to the varietal specifics and year conditions. For modern technologies of the production of high-quality cherry products in the south of the country, domestic varieties Krasnaya devitsa, Volshebnitsa, Alaya, introduced varieties Anonce, Kroupnoplodnaya, Sweet Heart and Skina, stably bearing fruit under stress conditions, with a yield of 20.0 t/ha with a planting scheme 5.3 m, high marketable and taste qualities were suggested. Super early ripening cherry variety Madonna was recommended to expand the regional cherry conveyor.

Some biochemical parameters of juices from two red and yellow cashew apple varieties from three regions of Cote d Ivoire were analyzed. The parameters such as proteins, total soluble solids, total sugars, dry matters, and ashes had contents in juices ranging from 0.35 ± 0.01 % to 0.65 ± 0.02 %, 9.66 ± 0.28 % to 14.40 ± 0.10 %, 270.20 ± 5.15 g/L to 381.04 ± 9.86 g/L, 8.94 ± 0.02 % to 11.45 ± 0.43 % and 1.19 ± 0.01 % to 1.51 ± 0.03 % respectively. Besides, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicated that the region and variety had significant effects (P≤ 0.05) on these parameters. It so appeared significant differences (P≤ 0.05) between their contents. As for pH, these values varying from 4.00 ± 0.10 to 4.74 ± 0.10, differed meaningfully (P≤ 0.05) from one variety to another, whatever the region is. Otherwise, the results revealed that both red and yellow cashew apple varieties juices contained high rate of Tannins (1081.99 ± 34.64 - 2561.61 ± 95.11 mg/L), Flavonoids (223.83 ± 2.94 mg/L - 490.04 ± 5.32 mg/L) and total phenolic compounds (1587.59 ± 76.99 - 3043.03 ± 69.87 mg/L) whereas the carotenoid (0.97± 0.02 mg/mL -2.94 ± 0.02 mg/L) and Anthocyanin (6.57 ± 0.17 mg/L to 10.38 ± 0.15 mg/L) contents were found low. They also indicated yellow cashew apple variety juice didn't contain Anthocyanin content. Besides, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) showed that the region and variety main effect had significant effects (P 0.05) on these parameters. Thus, there were significant differences (P 0.05) between their rates. Furthermore, studies mineral elements (K, P, Mg, and Na) were only affected by improvement zone except to Na and they varied significantly (p 0.05). Red and yellow Cashew apple juices were the best sources of mineral elements and could be used in the diets of infants and young children. It was also rich in Vitamin C (210.61±5.01 mg/100mL and 403.73 ± 8.88 mg/100mL) and should be considered a potential supply source of adequate daily nutritional requirement for children and adults.

The purpose of researches was the assessment of commodity and consumer qualities for fruit of promising apricot forms which have been bred in the Michurin Federal Scientific Center. 8 apricot genotypes breeding in this institution were studied. The regionalized variety U’lyanikhinsky with its high level of commercial consumer qualities of fruit was used as a control. Fruit skin strength was assessed at the stage of consumer maturity using an FT30 penetrometer with a plunger diameter of 8 mm. Weighing was carried out on an AND EJ-6100 laboratory balance. The content of soluble solids was determined with an MT-032ATS field refractometer. Statistical data processing was carried out using computer programs Microsoft Excel 2007, Statistics. The largest fruit size was marked in Cezar variety. Average and maximum weights were 42.3 and 59.1 g, respectively. The least stone-to-fruit weight ratio (6.6 %) was found in Viking variety. The sample varieties Cezar, elite forms №1 and 3-5-7 are considered to be as freestone apricots. Elite form No. was characterized by an excellent taste of fruit. The fruits of the control variety «U’lyanikhinsky» and elite forms №1, 1-1-24 were distinguished by a strong juiciness of the pulp. The extremely rich fruit texture was observed in control variety U’lyanikhinsky and in Cezar variety, elite form № 3-5-7. The fruit of varieties Cezar, Viking and elite form No. 1 had the firmest fruit peel. The aforementioned apricots combined the attractiveness of fruits, their one — dimensional ground color with bright over color. Under the circumstances of the Central chernozem region the varieties Cezar, U’lyanikhinsky, Viking and elite form No. 1 pay attention to their high commodity and consumer qualities of fruit.

Changes in fruit weight, firmness and soluble solids content during the ripening period of Karešova cv. Including relationships between these characteristics were studied in 1998–2001. These years differed from each other in the amount and distribution of rainfall and in the course of temperatures. The length of ripening period fluctuated from 14 to 21 days. An increase in average fruit weight during the ripening period was 0.1 g per day. The actual increase in fruit weight was in a close correlation with the amount of rainfall in a few previous days. After heavy rainfalls, above 40 mm, fruit weight increased by nearly 1 g within in a few days. In the course of the ripening period fruit firmness decreased from about 2.5 N at the beginning of the period to about 1.5 N at its end. This decrease seems to be mainly the function of time during ripening. However, a low correlation between the amount of rainfall in the previous days and the decrease in firmness was also found. This correlation could be connected with negative regression of fruit firmness on the weight of the fruit. In the more rainy years 1998 and 1999 these decreases in firmness were more significant than in the other two years. Soluble solids content (SSC) increased from about 12% Brix at the beginning of the period to about 16% at its end. There were also found positive correlations between the weight of fruits and SSC. Taking into account contributions of all studied factors and their changes a conclusion was drawn that Karešova cv. should be harvested within one week from the beginning of its ripening period.

We investigated how the quality of blackberry fruit changes during the ripening period. Since it is difficult to predict picking dates for blackberries, we were interested in how the quality of fully ripe fruit changed depending on the sampling date (from 28 July to 1 September). Blackberries (at full ripeness) were sampled at six weekly intervals and the contents of sugars, vitamin C, organic acids and phenolic components were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry. The colour parameters, total soluble solids and weight of the fruits were also measured. The results showed that the fruits at the last sampling had a significantly lower fruit weight and higher soluble solids. ‘Cacanska Bestrna’ had the highest fruit weight and vitamin C content (11.43 mg/100 g). The main sugars in blackberries were fructose (13.8–33.4 g/kg FW) and glucose (13.0–33.2 g/kg FW). ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘Navaho’ had a sweeter taste since they had the highest ratio of sugars and acids (S/A approx. 5.8) and ‘Smoothstem’ and ‘Thornfree’ had the sourest taste, with a ratio of S/A 2.5. Blackberries harvested at the first two samplings had lower anthocyanin contents than fruits from later sampling times. There were no significant differences in the content of flavonols, ellagitannins, flavanols or hydroxycinnamic acids during the ripening period. The content of vitamin C in the fruits did not change among samplings, but the fruits had a higher content of organic acids at the first two or three samplings. The results may be useful for both the processing industry and growers to set quality standards for each variety and to determine the optimal harvest time.

In agricultural production, nitrogen loss leads to economic loss and is a high environmental risk affecting plant growth, yield, and quality. Use of the N fertilizer with a urease inhibitor is thus necessary to minimize N losses and increase the efficiency of N. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of N-(n-butyl) Thiophosphoric Triamide (NBPT) on the growth, yield, and quality of pineapple. The experiment involved two foliar fertilizer treatments: 1% (w/v) urea solution with NBPT (2.25 mL kg−1 urea) was treated as NLU (NBPT Liquid Urea), and the same concentration of urea without NBPT served as the control. Both were applied 12 times, starting 1 month after planting (MAP) and continuing once a month for 12 months. The application of urea with NBPT notably increased the above-ground dry biomass per plant (20% and 10% at 8 and 12 MAP, respectively), leaf area per plant (23% and 15% at 8 and 12 MAP, respectively), N accumulation per plant (10%), PFPN (Partial Factor Productivity) (13%), and average fruit weight (15%) compared to the treatment with urea alone (control). The analysis of quality parameters indicated that urea with NBPT improves TSS (Total Soluble Solids) (19%), ascorbic acid (10%), and sucrose (14%) but reduces the total organic acid content (21%) in pineapple. When using urea with a urease inhibitor (NBPT), there was a significant improvement in growth, yield, quality, and nitrogen use efficiency, with the additional benefit of reduced nitrogen losses, in combination with easy handling. Hence, urea with a urease inhibitor can be used as a viable alternative for increasing pineapple yield by boosting growth with better fruit quality.

Five strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cultivars were grown in Queensland, Australia to determine whether higher temperatures affect production. Transplants were planted on 29 April and data collected on growth, marketable yield, fruit weight and the incidence of small fruit less than 12 g until 28 October. Additional data were collected on fruit soluble solids content (SSC) and titratable acidity (TA) from 16 September to 28 October. Minimum temperatures were 2 °C to 4 °C higher than the long-term averages from 1965 to 1990. Changes in marketable yield followed a dose-logistic pattern (p < 0.001, R2s = 0.99). There was a strong negative relationship between fruit weight (marketable) and the average daily mean temperature in the four or seven weeks before harvest from 29 July to 28 October (p < 0.001, R2s = 0.90). There were no significant relationships between SSC and TA, and temperatures in the eight days before harvest from 16 September to 28 October (p > 0.05). The plants continued to produce a marketable crop towards the end of the season, but the fruit were small and more expensive to harvest. Higher temperatures in the future are likely to affect the economics of strawberry production in subtropical locations.

AbstractFruit quality traits play a significant role in consumer preferences and consumption in blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L). The objectives of this study were to construct a high-density linkage map and to identify the underlying genetic basis of fruit quality traits in blueberry. A total of 287 F1 individuals derived from a cross between two southern highbush blueberry cultivars, ‘Reveille’ and ‘Arlen’, were phenotyped over three years (2016–2018) for fruit quality-related traits, including titratable acidity, pH, total soluble solids, and fruit weight. A high-density linkage map was constructed using 17k single nucleotide polymorphisms markers. The linkage map spanned a total of 1397 cM with an average inter-loci distance of 0.08 cM. The quantitative trait loci interval mapping based on the hidden Markov model identified 18 loci for fruit quality traits, including seven loci for fruit weight, three loci for titratable acidity, five loci for pH, and three loci for total soluble solids. Ten of these loci were detected in more than one year. These loci explained phenotypic variance ranging from 7 to 28% for titratable acidity and total soluble solid, and 8–13% for pH. However, the loci identified for fruit weight did not explain more than 10% of the phenotypic variance. We also reported the association between fruit quality traits and metabolites detected by Proton nuclear magnetic resonance analysis directly responsible for these fruit quality traits. Organic acids, citric acid, and quinic acid were significantly (P < 0.05) and positively correlated with titratable acidity. Sugar molecules showed a strong and positive correlation with total soluble solids. Overall, the study dissected the genetic basis of fruit quality traits and established an association between these fruit quality traits and metabolites.

Orchard performance is influenced by weed competition. In this study, the effects of weed competition on nutrient contents, chemical and physical fruit quality properties were sought. The study was carried out in a high-density apple orchard (‘Golden Delicious’/M.9) over two consecutive growing seasons. The effect of weed competition was studied at three different levels: weak, moderate and strong. Fruit firmness, soluble solids content, macronutrients (such as nitrogen, potassium and calcium) and potassium+magnesium/calcium ratio in fruit were significantly affected by weed competition. Strong weed competition negatively affected soluble solids content and potassium+magnesium/calcium ratio. In both trial years, soluble solids content was significantly higher in weak weed competition. In the first year of the study, soluble solids content ranged between 13.77±0.06% (strong weed competition) and 15.20±0.10% (weak weed competition). In the following year, soluble solids content values were determined as 13.13±0.23% in strong weed competition and 13.83±0.21% in weak weed competition. Weak weed competition showed superiority for fruit weight and potassium+magnesium/calcium ratio. As a whole, this study indicates that insufficient weed control in tree rows might be a limiting factor for fruit quality in high-density apple orchards.
