Study of Technological Efficiency of Ginger Processing in East Sikkim- A Case Study

The two processing units namely Sundar Sikkim, Marchak, and Nature Gift, Majhitar were selected based on ginger as major processing products. It was found that most of the raw ginger was processed into ginger flakes and ginger powder. The maximum raw ginger in the study area was found processed into ginger flakes. Sun, solar, mechanical, solar-cum-mechanical and fire drying (smoke-free) were implemented. Among these methods, most of the ginger was dried using the mechanical dryer. The total cost of production, total operating expenses, and total financial costs were calculated. It was found that among the operating expenses, expenditure on raw ginger occupied a major component followed by power and utility. The minimum expenditure for operating expenses was for packing and packaging followed by repair and maintenance. Interest on working capital was found to be an important component of total financial cost in dried ginger flakes production. The profitability estimation of dried ginger flakes revealed that ginger processing was a profitable enterprise. The Break-even point was calculated and the technical efficiency for ginger flakes processing was found to be efficient at given level resources and level of technology. The constraints faced by the processors were collected through a personal interview method using a pre-tested well-structured schedule, analyzed in the tabular form and each of the constraints was ranked. The major problems faced by the ginger processor were found to be lack of labour availability (skilled and unskilled) followed by high price expectations from the farmers.

"Contract catering industry is concerned with the production of ready-to-eat meals for schools, hospitals and private companies. The structure of this market is highly competitive, and customers are rarely willing to pay a high price for this catering service. A single production sites may be demanded up to 10.000 meals per day and these operations can hardly be managed via rule of thumbs without any quantitative decision support tool. This situation is common at several stages of a food supply chain and the methodologies presented in this paper are addressed to any food batch production system with similar complexity and trade-offs. This paper proposes an original KPI dashboard, designed to control costs, time and quality efficiency and helping managers to identify criticalities. Special emphasis is given on food safety control which is the management’s main concern and must be carefully monitored in each stage of the production. To calculate the value of KPIs a Montecarlo simulation approach is used to deal with production complexity and uncertainty. A case study showcases the potential of simulation in this complex industrial field. The case study illustrates an application of the methodology on an Italian company suffering local recipe contamination. The company aims at defining the best standard for production, identifying cycles being sustainable from an economic and environmental point of view."

Road traffic, as a part of the entire transport system, is an important factor of social growth and development, which is necessary to create conditions for its safe operation, bearing in mind that all the benefits of this phenomenon are still paying a high price of unnecessary human suffering. In a contemporary society, there is a large number of institutions that play a role in the functioning of the transport system, but they stand out as the holders of activities and measures to improve traffic safety. Given that the number of accidents in recent years has reached a worrying level, in the interest of society is to reduce the number of accidents, or to increase traffic safety, because the consequences that the society is submitting in the form of human casualties and material damage are large. The model for the absolute traffic safety does not exist, but a permanent analytical monitoring of the status of road safety, control and regulation of traffic and taking measures to eliminate the risk factors can greatly increase the level of traffic safety.

This case study uses multiple qualitative methods to examine cultural meanings of virtual goods in a virtual world or Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) with consumer marketing promotions. Through participant observation, avatar hair emerged as a key virtual good. Symbolic displays in social interaction showed different meanings and uses for types of hair available to users, including high-status rare hair, and versions aligned with marketing promotions and real-world brands. Study of online artifacts examined user-generated content, such as user forums and machinima. The long interview method subsequently was employed to gather insight from users. Findings demonstrate how different data from these online methods provide rich meanings for avatar hair related to symbolic interactionism and self-presentation. Methods explore co-production among users, platform, and marketing efforts. Cultural meanings, user self-displays, and corporate influences related to avatar hair are presented. Avatar hair emerged as a status artifact that often revealed levels of social skills or wealth in this virtual culture, at times connected with marketing promotions relevant outside of the virtual world. Methodological implications are explored for avatar-based participation, artifacts from social networking and other technologies, and ethical approaches.
