The purpose of this study is to find out significant difference in implementing Story Mapping and Mind Mapping techniques toward students’ reading comprehension enhancement. This study used a quantitative research method and comparative design by measuring the achievement of pre-test and post-test. This study addressed three research questions: (a) What is the achievement of the students after being treated with Story Mapping and Mind-mapping Techniques? (b) Is there any significant difference between Story Mapping and Mind-mapping techniques in enhancing students’ reading comprehension?, (c) What is students’ response towards Story Mapping and Mind-mapping techniques? There are different types of text in reading; however, the researcher limited the texts given to the participants—utilizing narrative and descriptive texts only. This study utilized small average amount of sample size—72 eight graders to be given the treatment. The purpose of limiting the number of participants is to provide effective treatment for them. The result of this study shows that p. value (sig) = 0.279 > α (0.05). After analyzing the data, the researcher found out that the students reading comprehension are enhanced but there is no significant difference in reading comprehension enhancement between those who acquired Story Mapping technique and those who acquired Mind Mapping technique. Both techniques are deemed to be effective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension.   Keywords Reading comprehension, Story Mapping, Mind Mapping

This study aims to investigate whether the use of six selected short stories throughout the duration of a 14-week course could enhance students’ reading comprehension achievement at the end of the semester. Out of the six short stories read, three were chosen as in-class assignments known as ‘Personal Reading Logs’ (hereafter, PRLs). One group of semester two Diploma students taking a reading skills course was selected through a convenience sampling method. A pre-test was conducted by having the students answer a past semester reading quiz of which the results would then be compared to their post-test (final reading exam) results. A paired samples t-test revealed no significant difference in the reading scores of the pre-test and the post-test, t (17) = -.265, p > .05. Since the p-value was bigger than 0.05, this indicated that the mean reading score of the post-test (M = 50.556) was not significantly higher than the mean reading score of the pre-test (M = 49.722). Therefore, the null hypothesis which stated that there was no difference in the mean score of the pre-test and post-test was retained. Overall, the result refuted the findings of other studies promoting the effectiveness of using short stories to enhance L2 reading comprehension achievement.

This research investigates the effectiveness of mind mapping implementation in storytelling to improve students' speaking skills.  This research was framed as an experimental method in which tests and interviews are used to analyze the data. The test consisted of pre-test and post-test, while the structured interview is used to find out students' perspectives toward using mind mapping in storytelling. The finding suggests a significant difference between students' speaking skills in retelling stories using mind mapping and without mind mapping. This difference could be seen from the distribution of the t-score, which is higher than the t-table. T-score is 6. 8, and the t-table is 1.7. The research also suggests that the students considered the mind mapping technique an excellent and effective technique applied in storytelling to improve their speaking performance. Based on the result, the application of the Mind Mapping Technique in storytelling in teaching speaking skills can be one of effective ways to improve the student's speaking performance.

Abstract. This research is motivated by the low writing skills of poetry. This is characterized by students' poetry writing skills that are not productive, still informative, students are still difficult to express their ideas, and are less attractive to students because they only use one technique. One learning technique that can improve poetry writing skills is mind mapping techniques. Mind mapping is also a learning technique to stimulate students' imagination in generating ideas, recording and summarizing using mind mapping. This study aims to examine the effect of Mind Mapping Technique on Poetry Writing Skills of students in elementary school. This study was an experimental study of Quasi Experimental Design with Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population in this study were all fifth grade students of class V. Sampling is done by saturated sample technique (total sampling), namely VB class as an experimental class and VA class as a control class. The experimental class consisted of 34 students and the control class consisted of 36 students. The instrument used to determine the effect of mind mapping techniques is observation and documentation. The experimental class was treated by using mind mapping techniques in poetry writing skills while the control class without using mind mapping techniques.Based on the results of the pretest obtained the average value of the experimental class 60 and the average value of the control class 64.2. From the results of the comparison of the two sample classes, there was a difference in value of 3.7, so it can be concluded that there is no significant difference between the two pretest grades, meaning that the two classes have the same initial ability. Next, learning was conducted using mind mapping techniques in the experimental class and learning without mind mapping techniques in the control class. After learning is given then in both classes posttest is conducted. For the experimental class obtained an average value of 82 and for the control class obtained an average value of 77.5. From the results of testing hypotheses with a significant level of 0.05 obtained a significant value of 0,000 because sig. <α, the hypothesis is accepted, so it can be concluded that there is an effect of using mind mapping techniques on students' poetry writing skills in elementary school. Keywords: Mind Mapping Techniques, Writing Skills, Poetry
