HISTOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF TUMOURS AND TUMOUR LIKE LESIONS OF KIDNEY AND RENAL PELVIS

Background : Tumour and tumour like lesions of kidney and renal pelvis include a wide spectrum of entities. Renal neoplasms occurs both in adults and in children, with few rare tumours and account for 1% to 2% of all body cancers. Majority of which are RCC. Tumour and tumour like lesions of kidney and renal pelvis may present with nonspecic clinical manifestations, incidental ndings on radiology or at autopsy, may present with the classical triad of ank pain, haematuria and abdominal mass or can be asymptomatic. Hence histopathological examination is essential for the diagnosis of renal neoplasms. Material and method : It is retrospective study (July 2003 to June 2013) for a period of 10 years. Histopathological features of 38 tumours and tumour like lesions of the kidney and renal pelvis were analysed.Out of 38 cases, 27 were nephrectomy specimens and 11 were renal biopsies The histopathological reports and clinical details were collected and corresponding slides were reviewed. Tumours are classied according to WHO classication 2016. Results: The present study included 38 cases of tumour and tumour like lesions of kidney and renal pelvis. Histopathological evaluation revealed malignant neoplasms in 27 (71.05%) cases, benign neoplasm in 5 (13.15%) cases and tumour like lesions in 6 (15.79%) cases.Among malignant tumours, clear cell RCC was the most frequent tumour in our study observed in 13 (86.67%) cases. Overall higher numbers of tumours and tumourth th like lesions of kidney and renal pelvis were seen in the rst decade of life followed by 4 to 5 decade of life in our study with a male predominance having M:F ratio of 1.23:1. Conclusion: Malignant tumours outnumbered the benign tumours. Most of the malignant, benign and tumour like lesions present with similar clinical features hence histopathology remains the gold standard method.

BACKGROUND A variety of non - neoplastic and neoplastic conditions involve the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx and these are very common lesions encountered in clinical practice. Histopathological examination of these lesions is the gold standard for diagnosis because management and prognosis vary among different lesions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the histopathological study of the lesions of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx in relation to their incidence, age, gender and site wise distribution and to compare the results with the available data. METHODS A study of 88 cases was conducted for a period of 2 years from August 2017 to July 2019. After fixation, Processing and Haematoxylin and Eosin staining and special stains histopathological diagnosis was made. RESULTS Among 88 total cases, 58 were males and 30 were females. A male predominance was observed with a male to female ratio of 1.93 : 1. They were more common in third, fourth and fifth decade of life. Malignant nasal lesions were seen after fourth decade of life. Nasal lesions were more common in nasal cavity (67.05 %), followed by paranasal sinuses (18.18 %) and nasopharynx (14.75). Out of 88 total cases, 39 (44.32 %) were non - neoplastic, 30 (34.09 %) were benign and 19 (21.59 %) were malignant nasal lesions. CONCLUSIONS Sinonasal lesions and nasopharyngeal lesions can have various differential diagnoses. A complete clinical, radiological and histopathological correlation helps to categorize these sinonasal lesions into various non - neoplastic and neoplastic types. But histopathological examination remains the mainstay of definitive diagnosis. Background: To study the histopathological features of neoplastic and non neoplastic lesions of breast.  To correlate the pathological findings with clinical parameters.Methods: We have studied total 170 cases of breast lesions over a period of two years in our institute. The specimens were received in histopathology section of our department. Detailed gross examination of specimens was done followed by fixation, thorough sampling, and tissue processing. The different lesions were studied by histopathological examination and analysed. Neoplastic lesions were classified according to the WHO classification.Results: Out of the 170 cases, 128 cases had neoplastic lesions and 41 cases had non-neoplastic lesions, and one case had coexistent neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions. Out of the total 129 cases with neoplastic lesions, 76 cases had benign breast tumors, 51 cases had malignant breast tumors, and 2 cases had precursor lesions. Fibroadenoma was the most common benign tumour with 62 cases. Invasive carcinoma no special type was the most common malignant tumour with 43 cases. Special subtypes of invasive carcinoma found in our study were mucinous carcinoma (2 case). The most common nonneoplastic lesion was mastitis with 12 cases, followed by duct ectasia and fibrocystic change. There were 6 cases of gynaecomastia. All the tumors involved upper outer quadrant most frequently. The benign tumors were most frequent in second, third and fourth decades, malignant tumours were seen beyond 4th decade. The nonneoplastic lesions were common in 4th decade.Conclusions: Histopathological study is important in the management of breast lesions.

Background: Abdominal tuberculosis is the sixth most common form of extrapulmonary site of infection after lymphatic, genitourinary, bone and joint, miliary and meningeal TB with a rising incidence in recent years. Tuberculosis can affect any part of the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract including anus, peritoneum and hepato-biliary system. The clinical manifestations of abdominal tuberculosis are non-specific and mimic various GI disorders and cause delay in diagnosis and management. The aim of this study is to study the incidence of abdominal tuberculosis, percentage of acute presentation, to study and analyse clinical presentation, various diagnostic modalities, role of surgery and to evaluate the spectrum of surgeries done for abdominal tuberculosisMethods: Study was done by analyzing 108 cases in our tertiary care hospital, Chennai, India, during the period of June 2015 to January 2016. All suspected and diagnosed cases of abdominal tuberculosis were included in the study. The relevant clinical information, laboratory results, microbiological and radiological investigations were recorded. Histopathological examination of all the resected or excised specimens was done to detect tuberculosis in all the cases.Results: Out of 108 cases with abdominal tuberculosis, the average age of presentation was between 21 and 40 years with a slight male predominance (male:female = 1.1:1). Abdominal pain (92%) was the most common presenting symptom followed by anorexia (70%), loss of weight (70%), and intestinal obstruction (13%). 29 cases underwent surgical management. All patients were put on anti-tubercular treatment and majority showed good response to therapy.Conclusions: Abdominal tuberculosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients with vague GI symptoms. To diagnose abdominal tuberculosis, high degree of suspicion is needed, and its incidence being common in people with lower socioeconomic status. This study gives a basic outline of presentation, diagnosis and management of abdominal tuberculosis in developing country.

Background: Skin adnexal tumours are rare tumours with complex histological patterns and variations and difficult to diagnose by histopathology only, so clinical history and presentation is necessary. The objective of the study was to correlate with age, sex, location, type of differentiation of adnexal tumours in our pathology department.Methods: The present study was a prospective study done in the department of pathology in Andhra medical college, King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam. A total of 51 cases were included in this study from January 2015 to December 2016. Specimens were formalin fixed and after adequately processing the sections were stained routinely with hematoxylin and eosin stain and properly evaluated for histopathological examination.Results: Out of these 51 cases, 88.24% (45 cases) were benign, and 11.76% (6 cases) were malignant tumours. Hair follicle differentiation were most common (35.3%) followed by sebaceous gland differentiation (31.37%) and sweat gland differentiation (29.41%).Conclusions: Benign adnexal tumours were most common than malignant tumours. Skin adnexal tumours are clinically often misdiagnosed, so histopathological examination remains gold standard for their correct diagnosis.

Background: There is a wide spectrum of salivary gland lesions with morphological and clinical diversity which makes it a difficult task for histopathological interpretation. Tumours of salivary glands are uncommon accounting for 3-10% of the total tumors of head and neck region and less than one percent of all tumours. The aim of this study was to recognize various histomorphological patterns of salivary gland lesions, their frequency, age, gender and site wise distribution.Methods: This study was carried out from June 2015 to May 2018 in the department of Pathology, JLN Medical College and associated Group of Hospitals, Ajmer. Total 121 cases of salivary gland lesions were included. Specimens were processed and stained by Hematoxylin and Eosin stain followed by histopathological examination.Results: Out of total 121 cases, 43.8% were non-neoplastic and 56.2% were neoplastic. In non-neoplastic lesions predominant was chronic sialadenitis (50.9%) followed by mucocele (28.3%) which commonly seen in submandibular gland (47.17%). Among neoplastic cases, 79.4% were benign and 20.6% were malignant lesions. Neoplastic lesions commonly were seen in parotid (75%). Pleomorphic adenoma was the commonest benign tumour (81.4%). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common malignant salivary tumour. Benign tumours were common in third and fourth decades, whereas malignant tumours were more common in fifth and sixth decades. Male predominance was seen in overall salivary gland lesions.Conclusions: Histopathological examination is mandatory in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions because of their wide spectrum of histomorphology.

Background: A breast lump is the most common symptom associated with both benign and malignant breast diseases. Therefore, a distinction of benign from malignant lump is of importance for proper management. Though a definitive diagnosis is possible with imaging for all the lesions, histopathological study is proven essential for confirming the diagnosis. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of USG and histopathological findings of different breast lump in diagnosis and their comparison. Methods: A prospective study was conducted over a period of one year from January 2017 to December 2017. A total of 116 patients were included in this study. All breast lumps underwent surgery and the ultrasound findings of these lumps were compared with the histopathological findings. Data were collected from these patients by a preformed questionnaire and finally the data were analyzed. Results: Out of 116 patients only 21 cases were reported as malignant in ultrasound report but histopathology revealed 31 malignant patients. On histopathological examination 10 benign cases turned out to be malignant. Conclusion: The present study was undertaken to evaluate in diagnosing breast mass lesions individually by ultrasound and compared with histopathology for definitive management of a patient. Abstract Background Upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) with multiple pathological types is extremely rare in the clinic, but the recurrence rate and mortality these patients are high. At present, there is no standard treatment for such cases. Case presentation We reported a case of ureteral urothelial carcinoma with squamous cell carcinoma and sarcomatoid carcinoma differentiation and rapid ileal metastasis and reviewed the literature related to different pathological types of upper urinary tract tumours to explore the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis characteristics of the disease, enhance our understanding of its clinical manifestations and history of evolution and provide guidance for avoiding missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. Conclusion There is no standard treatment for urinary malignant tumours with multiple pathological types; radical surgery is considered a suitable choice. Chemotherapy, targeted drug therapy and immunotherapy may be beneficial to the survival of patients. In short, these patients have a high risk of recurrence and metastasis and a poor prognosis.

Background:Tumours and tumour like lesions of the colon and rectum have overlapping clinical presentation and may be difcult to diagnose on clinical grounds alone. Histopathological examination although helpful to arrive at correct diagnosis, at times may be difcult and may require ancillary tests such as immunohistochemistry. Materials and Methods: A prospective cross sectional study enrolled 125 cases of colorectal biopsies after histopathological conrmation of tumours and tumour like lesions. The specimens were received at the Department of Pathology, DMCH, Laheriasarai, Bihar from December 2019 to November 2020. Results: Out of 125 cases, 32 cases were benign tumours, 36 cases were malignant tumours and 57 cases were tumour like lesions. Most common age range was 51-60 years with mean age of 38 years. Males comprised 76.74% and females 23.26% with ratio of 3:1. Juvenile polyp was the commonest lesion. Among benign tumours, tubular adenoma was the most common (19.2%), adenocarcinoma was most common malignant tumour (25.6%) and juvenile polyp was the most common tumour like lesion (27.2%). Left side was most common side (66.67%) and rectum was the most common site (48.8%). Conclusions: The commonest indications for colorectal biopsies were tumours and tumour like lesions. Juvenile polyp was the most common tumour like lesion, tubular adenoma was the most common benign tumour and adenocarcinoma was the most common malignant tumour. Histopathological examination is a gold standard for conrmation of all tumour and tumours like lesions of colon and rectum.

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the protective effect of black seed oil against testicular tissue damage in diabetic rats. A total of 18 male rats were divided into 3 groups, including 6 rats in each group.Groups; control (n=6), diabetes (n=6), diabetes + black seed oil (n=6). A single dose of 45 mg / kg streptozocine (STZ) was injected intraperitoneally to induce diabetes. Diabetes + Black seed oil group: For 56 days, 2.5 ml / kg of black seed oil was administered orally to rats.The rats were sacriced at the end of 56 days. Testicular tissues were taken for routine parafn tissue processing for histopathological examination. Parafn sections were stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin and PAS and examined under a light microscope. Atrophy and degeneration were observed in the seminiferous tubules of diabetic group. Histology of black seed oil group sections were similar to that of control group. A signicant difference was found between the black seed oil group and the diabetes group in terms of blood glucose values. As a result, we think that Black Seed Oil ameliorates to the tissue damage caused by diabetes and the decrease in blood sugar value.

<p><strong>Objective: </strong>The current research was designed to evaluate the cardioprotective activity of <em>Mentha longifolia</em> (ML) leaf extract on cyclophosphamide-induced cardiotoxicity in rats.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Cardiotoxicity was induced in <em>Albino wistar</em> rats of either sex by administering a single injection of cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg, i. p.) on the first day of the experimental period. <em>Mentha longifolia</em> (250 and 500 mg/kg, p. o.) was administered daily for 10 d immediately after administration of cyclophosphamide on the first day. The general observations such as oxidative marker enzyme assays, ECG and histopathology were examined.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Cyclophosphamide administration significantly (p&lt;0.05) increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) and decreased the levels of antioxidant markers such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Cyclophosphamide elevated the levels of biomarker enzymes like creatine kinase isoenzyme MB (CK-MB), creatine kinase isoenzyme NAC (CK-NAC) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Further, the cyclophosphamide-treated rats showed changes in electrocardiographic parameters. Treatment with <em>Mentha longifolia</em> significantly (p&lt;0.05) reversed the status of cardiac biomarkers, ECG and oxidative enzymes in cyclophosphamide-induced cardiotoxicity. Histopathological examination was also supported the potential cardioprotective effect of <em>Mentha longifolia</em> with reduced damage to the myocardium.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The biochemical, ECG and histopathology reports support the potential benefits of <em>Mentha longifolia</em> against myocardial damage which could be attributed to antioxidant activity.</p>
