The present study examined differential social experiences of international students living in a residential hall called ‘Nihongo House’ (Japanese language house) at a Japanese university. By conducting social network analysis (SNA), as well as making use of ethnographic data collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews, we explain how constellations of interpersonal relations at the house transformed over the course of one semester and what factors were responsible for those changes. Additionally, we present three focal cases of international students. These students—with different motivational orientations, personal dispositions and abilities, and social standing—went through diverse social processes, which led to different levels of success in respective accounts. Based on the analysis, we discuss how social experiences of these students in this particular setting can be understood in relation to their language use and potential development and how this type of residential hall can effectively nurture interpersonal relationships.

The present research assessed the effect of interpersonal relationships on two aspects of Japanese university students' moral judgment, manner of application and contents of helping norms. In Study 1, 68 university students (34 men, 34 women) answered questionnaires which requested evaluation of behaviors in helping situations with variable behaviors by agents and different interpersonal relations between agent and victim and between subject and agent. Subjects were asked to evaluate each case on two scales, moral evaluation and expectation. Female Japanese students showed strong relation-based morality on these two dimensions. In Study 2, 30 female students were interviewed using questions from the questionnaire given in Study 1 and others about the moral reasoning behind their relation-based judgments. Their answers showed that the female Japanese university students tended to make judgments without reference to the principle of universality or justice even when they knew the principle. The result suggests a relation-based moral orientation rather than a justice orientation.

In 1984, more than 21,000 hectares of Santa María Huatulco were expropriated, including the entire coastal area in favor of FONATUR, as a result of the positive global tourism trend and that Mexico began in the 1960s with the development of the Integrally Planned Centers. (CIP) to contribute to the economic development of backward or isolated areas of the country (Espinosa C., 2013). However, this model of tourism development of Sun and Beach, brought to the community challenges and impositions of regulations, new subsistence techniques and change of ownership of the land; what questions and deeply questions the methods, customs and, fundamentally, the identity of the community, leaving aside the importance of the local culture that was not subsumed to the economic interest but ignored. This descriptive research was carried out by crossing techniques at different levels: first of all, the data sources that were processed in the analysis were not solely of a disciplinary origin. Different institutions were attended as they are religious, historical and tourist. The data collection work is qualitative based on review of the hemerobibliographic file, as well as semi-structured interviews (Quivy, 2004, page 185) and non-participant observation (Quivy, 2004, page 188).

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that caused the pandemic since March 2020, has affected among others, health professionals who work in covid-19 units by facing social discrimination. The aim of this study was to record the experiences of health professionals working in the first line of treatment of the pandemic, to analyse the effects of the pandemic on the interpersonal relationships of health professionals, and to ask about the stigma they faced during their work with people with covid-19. This is a qualitative study with an ethnographic approach based on 160 semi-structured interviews with health professionals living and working in the Epirus Region, Greece. For the data collection we used semi-structured interviews, discussions and participatory observation. Specifically, the interviews were conducted on health professionals and more specifically doctors, nurses, rescuers, physiotherapists and administrative staff, working in covid-19 units at the University General Hospital of Ioannina (Reference hospital for Ioannina, in Epirus), which assists in the treatment of patients with covid-19, and in the branch of the rescue department of Ioannina. The data were analysed in four thematic units based on their common characteristics: a) emotions and experiences of health professionals, b) interpersonal relations of health professionals, c) social exclusion and discrimination, and d) health professionals as patients. The results showed that the main emotions that health professionals experienced when they were moved to covid-19 clinics were fear, anxiety, distress, anger and insecurity. These feelings worsened when their family environment treated them with fear and hesitancy. Their social environment tended to avoid them, leading to a state of self-isolation. To conclude, health professionals faced discriminating behaviors and stigma both from their families and social environment, and from other health professionals. The government struggled to handle the situation in keeping a balance between both the security and well-being of health professionals as it was not prepared for a pandemic like this.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight that interpersonal relations within a visits venue in a carceral space can be restorative. This provides implications for staff working in institutions to support a visits programme to assist those incarcerated. Design/methodology/approach The experiences of those formerly incarcerated are captured through an ethnography of engagement by way of semi-structured interviews and field notes. In methodology it draws upon the fields of criminology and prison sociology, and in particular using an ethnographic approach within the field of Carceral Geography. Findings Interpersonal relationships developed, with a “significant other” within the liminality of displacement, are therapeutic in nature and potentially contribute to ongoing healthier relationships than previously experienced, once a person is released from incarceration. These also assist those incarcerated transition into the community when released. Research limitations/implications The sample within the study was only small, did not include the impact of family members, nor the impact of not having visitors upon people who are incarcerated. The feedback received was all positive. Other people might have had alternative experiences that were not captured in this study. Practical implications A practical outcome of this research is to encourage the development of interpersonal relationships and the reconstruction of social networks for those incarcerated as a means of early intervention for their recovery and future progress reintegrating back into society. Social implications The impact of a significant other helps those formerly incarcerated to value the importance of close supportive relationships in contributing to the lives of others socially. Originality/value Assisting those incarcerated develop a relationship with a significant other provides a unique protective element as a social intervention. Staff within institutions have a unique role within their service to facilitate visitors and to encourage those incarcerated to connect with a significant other so as to help their mental health, support their general well-being and give them hope for the future.

The objective of this study was to understand the interpersonal process of embracement between nurses and family members in an adult ICU. It is exploratory, descriptive and observational study, with a qualitative approach, conducted among ten nurses working in an adult ICU, selected using non-probabilistic sampling and established by data saturation, based on three data collection techniques: theme-drawing-text, semistructured interviews and non-participant observation. The analysis, based on Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations and from a tridimensional focus, identified: reason, emotion and volition, that the embracement provided to families manifested certain shortcomings related to the communication process, the development of autonomy for discharge and the interpersonal relationship between nurses and the family. The nurses' concepts in relation to user embracement were positive, demonstrating their willingness to provide it, although they encounter formational and experiential difficulties in putting this nursing theory into practice, insofar as interpersonal relationships and, consequently, in the embracement of families.

Human Towers are one of the most representative traditional sporting games in Catalonia, recognized in 2010 as Intangible Cultural Heritage by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO). The objective of this research was to study the emotional states (well-being, discomfort, and affectivity) elicited by a representative performance of the colla de Castellers de Lleida. This research is based on an ethnographic case study, with mixed methods in which 17 key informants (castellers) voluntarily participated. Participant observation was used; the data were recorded in a field diary and oral sources (semi-structured interviews). The content analysis was done using the Atlas.ti software (version 8.4.4). An SPSS database was also created. The statistical techniques were: Descriptive statistical techniques, cross tables with Pearson's Chi-square values (significance level of p < 0.05). We also used a classification and regression trees (CRT) to examine the predictive capacity of five independent variables (data source, logic, semantic units; contexts of a performance) of emotional states. The results reveal that the comments (n = 132) were mostly oriented toward well-being states (n = 70; 53%), The internal cooperative logic of the Human Towers enhances the intense interpersonal relationships of socio-emotional well-being.

Abstract:This article presents emerges from a qualitative investigation carried in a maintained in a public college of child education and primary from the province of Cordoba (Spain). The French Paradox is the theory that France has an unexpectedly low prevalence of coronary heart disease compared to levels that would be predicted by their high consumption of fats. Aside from high-fat foods, wine is portrayed by English media to be a staple of the French diet. In this article, I explore the wine-drinking cultures in Nice, France, and London, England, that were revealed by conducting semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and descriptive surveys. I describe two mealtime vignettes of my ethnographic experience that are symbolic of my main findings from this study. Specifically, I find that residents of Nice consume wine in smaller portions, often during shared social experiences at meals, whereas Londoners are more likely to consume wine in larger portions and more frequently for relaxation than their counterparts in Nice. Wine connoisseurship in London is a relatively novel practice, and wine drinking is often associated with the potential for inebriation, whereas mindful appreciation of high-quality wines is a staple element of French identity in Nice. Further epidemiological research is needed to determine causality of French wine culture's impact on cardiovascular health. However, it is evident from my research that the aesthetics of French wine culture may be a powerful tool to promote mindfulness and moderation.
