In the article an attempt is made to characterize some peculiarities of distant learning in the context of Covid pandemic. The definition of distant learning and its forms is given. The author tries to compare the efficiency of distant learning as it is and its efficiency as the only form of learning in the context of extreme conditions. Based on the experience of a rapid transition to distant learning of the students of Donetsk National Medical University the author descirbes and analyzes the main challenges the students and teachers faced during that period. Among them are the uncertainty about its length, special difficulties for foreign students , lack of technological devices and the necessary skills to work with them that some students experienced, the necessity to define the appropriate balance between online and offline forms of distant learning in mastering University courses, the absence of video courses in some subjects - Ukrainian as a foreign language in particular. The revealed merits and drawbacks of online learning are considered. The positive factors are the following: due to distant learning the process of studying at all educational institutions was not discontinued, students could save their time not getting to the University, working with offline tasks in their individual tempo, internet resources suggested new opportunities for teachers to be used in the period of distant learning and after it. The negative aspects are complete dependence of teaching and studying on technological devices which are not always reliable, difficulties for teachers to control if a student was really independent doing written and oral tests or examination answering, lack of the necessary emotional and visual communication between a student and a teacher, The author mentions that one of the lessons drawn from the experience of distant learning in pandemic period is the fact that the role of a teacher is in no way diminished. It remains the key factor both in classical and distant forms of studying. A mixed form of learning which combines both above mentioned ones is regarded to be widely practiced in future.

Summary. SARS-CoV-2 became a global pandemic challenge for billions of people by reaching people of different nationalities and age groups. Ukraine lists 80470 foreign students who are enrolled into university studies. Ternopil National Medical University (TNMU) includes 2414 foreign students who are enrolled in university studies with the biggest majority of Indian students. The aim of the study – to assess the incidence of COVID-19 in students and identify the possible predisposing factors for disease appearance among the foreign students of TNMU. Materials and Methods. The study included 641 medical students of TNMU from different countries. The questionnaire included 8 questions to evaluate the presence of risk factors among TNMU foreign students and identify the percentage of students who were already exposed to COVID-19. Results. The amount of students that proved PCR-confirmed COVID-19 infection since the start of the pandemic equaled 7.17% (n=46). An evident contact with COVID-19 case prior to the personal disease appearance was proved by only 11.85 % of students (n=76). PCR-confirmed cases in families of TNMU foreign medical students equaled 14.35% (n=92).  Conclusions. General incidence of COVID-19 among foreign students of TNMU is low. It is influenced by multiple factors including healthy lifestyle, small amount of smokers, and absence of chronic respiratory problems, current lockdown measures, good physical and mental health status.

The article describes the difficulties of transition to distance learning (DL) at a medical university when students pass clinical disciplines, using the example of the subject of "psychiatry". The negative impact of the pandemic on international cooperation in the field of education and science was also noted, in particular, attracting foreign students to further education. Based on the above, the following tasks were set: to study the features of the transition to distance learning the subject of "psychiatry" at the Odessa National Medical University, to identify the features of distance work with English-speaking foreign students during their learning of this discipline and to present proposals for optimizing this process. During the transition to DL, a significant decrease in the quality of education was noticed during the absence of an existing learning management system, since this transition was a certain stress for all participants in the educational process, both students and teachers. Significant problems have arisen in the DL of clinical disciplines for English-speaking students. The greatest difficulty is the teaching of psychiatry, since it is difficult to explain to students in English not only the description of psychopathological symptoms and syndromes, but also the mental characteristics of people with other nationalities. It is proposed to use movies, with the main heroes suffering from mental disorders, as a thematic guide for mastering practical skills. Although some of the positive aspects of DL have been noted by medical students, they agree to DL only as a forced short-term measure.
