The article addresses the current trends of teaching subjects through the medium of English which has been boosting in the world and in Ukraine. Introduced due to globalization processes, teaching in English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) has become an essential part of internationalization policies of universities. The increase in numbers of international students is viewed as an indication of quality of education provided by universities; it contributes to universities’ higher ratings and competitiveness. The introduction of EMI has been sustainably promoted by the British Council. Nonetheless, EMI providers across the world keep encountering similar issues and challenges. Amongst those, the most essential is low English language proficiency of non-native English speakers – both teachers and students. The article aims to examine the training provided to Ukrainian teachers who deliver EMI courses. The authors surveyed 28 EMI teachers in two universities in the country. The results imply the necessity to reprofile linguistic and pedagogical courses for EMI teachers, including training them in implementing innovative and interactive teaching techniques. The prospects of further research arouse from the need to develop a quality system of assessing students’ learning outcomes.

This study is aimed at improving the quality of teaching English at the university level by aligning the students’ needs and the expectations of the lecturers (a needs analysis) with moral values in developing moral character-based English language teaching materials. Development research method is used to carry out this research by employing the ‘I-DO’ methodology which contains three distinct phases namely; 1). The input phase which is passed by a needs analysis involving 60 participants (55 students and 10 lectures). The participants were purposively selected. Questionnaires were used to collect the data which were analyzed by using descriptive approach. 2). The development Phase which is passed by formulating goals and objectives based on the information gathered from the needs analysis. 3) The output phase which is completed by making lesson plans, and producing prototype of the moral value-based teaching materials. This research has built one prototype of a well-developed ELT material for transactional speaking skill. We believe that our findings on the use of ‘I-DO’ methodology could have a profound impact on the way ELT materials is developed in language program.

Evaluating a coursebook is necessary to find the strengths and weaknesses to improve the quality of sources and professional development. This study aimed to investigate the suitability of EAP coursebook materials with the criteria for good teaching materials and the English language needs of IAIN Purwokerto students. The study engaged 83 second-semester students at IAIN Purwokerto, who were randomly drawn from each study program at IAIN Purwokerto. The researchers employed a content analysis procedure:  the unit of analysis covering places, actors, activities, research variables in the form of teaching materials in EAP courses, and data collection using a checklist. The analysis of the research is based on the criteria of good teaching materials and the students' English needs which cover the target requirement component for needs analysis, consisting of the students’ needs, shortcomings, and desires. The researchers found that the suitability of the coursebook with the criteria for good text teaching materials has average level of relevance of 50.13%, which is quite appropriate in the category. There were some weaknesses or shortcomings that made this EAP course book not classified as a high level of relevance. English language needs of IAIN Purwokerto students tend to learn integrated language skills, especially speaking and listening.

The textbook is one of the most substantial elements of classroom learning. As a result, it is critical to conduct a textbook evaluation to improve the quality of the teaching and learning environment in the classroom. Keeping in mind the very importance of the textbook evaluation, the current study evaluated a 10th-grade English textbook published by Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board Lahore, Pakistan. The present study aimed to evaluate the book’s overall pedagogical worth according to teachers’ and students’ needs and demands. For this purpose, 10 teachers and 60 students were selected from different public and private schools. Two different questionnaires were prepared by Litz (2001) with slight variations. The teachers’ questionnaire version had 20 items, while the students’ version had 15 items. The statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS after the data had been collected. The study’s findings revealed that the textbook as a whole is well-designed and offers an array of useful extra materials. The book is also visually pleasing, well-organized, consistent, and orderly. Overall, the positive characteristics outnumbered the negative ones by a wide margin. Despite a few flaws in the book, such as the lack of a glossary and grammar, the results showed that the textbook was adequate for language learners. Overall, it was considered that, despite some flaws, the textbook fulfilled the needs of students and might be a practical book in the hands of competent teachers. Keywords: textbook; evaluation; English language

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how the contemporary “refugee crisis” is being presented to children through picture books and teaching materials. It uses the concept of refugeedom as an approach that takes into account the multiple facets involved in the forced movement of people in the past and present and seeks to show the value of historical understandings in educational contexts when framing resources for teachers and students. Design/methodology/approach The paper examines a sample of high-profile English language picture books about children’s stories of forced displacement and the most prominent freely available teaching materials connected to the books. A critical discursive analysis of the books and educative guides considers the ways in which ideas and information about forced displacement is framed for child readers and children in primary school classrooms. The context for the authors’ interest in exploring these books and educational resources is that in response to the numbers of children who are part of the current “refugee crisis” alongside a public call for the “crisis” to be explained to children. Findings The paper argues that picture books open up spaces for children to explore refugeedom through experiences of forced movement and various factors involved in the contemporary “refugee crisis”. In contrast, in the teaching resources and some peritextual materials, the child in the classroom is addressed as entirely disconnected from children who are forcibly displaced, students in classrooms are positioned to learn from the refugee “other”. When links are made between students in classroom and children who have been forcibly displaced it is through activities that position students in classrooms to imagine themselves as forcibly displaced, or to suggest they act within a humanitarian framework of welcoming or helping refugees. The authors believe that if teaching resources were more directly informed by discipline specific tools of historical concepts, more nuanced approaches to past and present histories of forced movement could be considered and from that more fruitful learning opportunities created for all students. Practical implications This research provides ideas about how materials to support the use of picture books in educational settings could be developed to promote historical thinking and contextualisation around key social and political issues in the world today. It also makes the case for historians to be involved in the creation of teaching materials in a collaborative way so that academic insights can be brought to teachers and students at all levels of education. Originality/value The value of this research is to understand how children are positioned in reading and learning about forced displacement and query the impact of decontextualised approaches to learning. It argues for the critical interpretative value that historical understanding can bring to present day issues which are history in the making.

Based on various sources of data collection for a qualitative research project, the study reported in this paper set out to examine four teachers’ and sixteen students’ perceptions of a multiple-draft/multiple-party feedback approach to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student writing. This approach had been implemented as a trial in a tertiary setting in Vietnam. Three sources of feedback at three phases were provided. These included (1) peer/group written and oral feedback on the students’ first drafts, (2) a teaching assistant’s written and oral feedback on their second drafts and (3) the lecturer’s written feedback on their final drafts. Content analysis of the data revealed that all participants valued this multiple feedback approach because of its practicality and the quality of the feedback which participants believed contributed to writing improvement. Based on the participants’ reactions, the study highlights the potential of multiple-draft/multiple-party feedback practices for improving English language writing in a tertiary context.
