Since the beginning of 1980's advancements in studies on competitiveness and clustering in global scale have also affected the manufacturing sector in Turkey at the beginning of 2000's. In several debates, it has been strongly emphasized that measurement of both competitiveness and clustering in regional level is a necessity for analyze and implementation processes. This study aims to investigate clustering tendency of footwear manufacturers and to analyze competition power of firms in Konya province in Turkey. For this purpose, footwear industry in the province is analyzed by Porter’s Diamond Model. In addition to Porter’s Model, effect of government factor was included in the analysis. Furthermore, a SWOT analyze was performed through workshops with manufacturers. In regard to competitiveness analysis of footwear industry in Konya, it is shown that the industry has an intermediate competition power. According to analysis, physical conditions of the industry is favorable in context of factor requirements, while lack of human resources is seen as a serious problem in labor-intensive sectors. Also, knowledge spillovers depending upon density and availability in conventional relationships are regarded as an important advantage.

Abstract We tackle the nowcasting problem at the regional level, using a large set of indicators (regional, national and international) for the years 1998 to 2013. We explicitly take into account the ragged-edge data structure and consider the different information sets faced by a regional forecaster within each quarter. It appears that regional survey results in particular improve forecasting accuracy. Among the 10% best performing models for the short forecasting horizon, one fourth contain regional indicators. Hard indicators from the German manufacturing sector and the Composite Leading Indicator for Europe also deliver useful information for the prediction of regional GDP in Saxony. Unlike national GDP forecasts, the performance of regional GDP is similar across different information sets within a quarter.

The application of the resource-oriented approach used in this book confirms the prominent role of the resource Property in the resource portfolios of each of the three policy actors. Property consists of the ownership of property and use rights to material and immaterial (natural, manufactured, social and/or human) resources and the various bundles of goods and/or services they provide to the owner. One of the prominent services of such resources involves their role as policy resource (abstract use of such resources as opposed to concrete uses). The most prominent material resource is the ownership of (strategic) land, which enables both public and private actors to play a predominant role in policy formulation and, especially, implementation processes. The chapter illustrates the mobilization and use modes of the resource Property in the areas of spatial planning, institutional policies (creation of a Swiss canton) , public accounting and state infrastructural policies (land acquisition policies for communal land use policy). It stresses the role of legal appeals by target groups or beneficiary organizations and the privileged position occupied landowners in the planning and implementation of large urban projects.

This article argues for adapting Porter’s Five Forces Model to strategic human resources management. The world business environment is facing real challenges: Shortage of talents, ageing of the world population, and disappearance of repetitive jobs. For a sustainable approach, the quality and stability of human capital should be analyzed strategically, based on the influence of five forces which act in the market: Competition in the industrial sector between specialists with core competencies (rivalry), demands of the hiring companies in terms of the number of employees and updated skills (organizations as buyers), recruitment companies and schools (suppliers), effects of globalization on people’s migration (new entrants), and modern technologies and innovation (substitutes). The stronger the forces are, the harder it will be for the organization to select or retain valuable employees who will add value to products/services. Actual and future employees should analyze the intensity of these forces when they plan to prepare for jobs or change their career. This analysis was focused mainly on the manufacturing sector, where jobs based on repetitive or dangerous tasks may disappear in time.

Cities are characterized by concentrating population, economic activity and services. However, not all cities are equal and a natural hierarchy at local, regional or global scales spontaneously emerges. In this work, we introduce a method to quantify city influence using geolocated tweets to characterize human mobility. Rome and Paris appear consistently as the cities attracting most diverse visitors. The ratio between locals and non-local visitors turns out to be fundamental for a city to truly be global. Focusing only on urban residents' mobility flows, a city-to-city network can be constructed. This network allows us to analyse centrality measures at different scales. New York and London play a central role on the global scale, while urban rankings suffer substantial changes if the focus is set at a regional level.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate existing stakeholder participation by region in the FP7, to determine the success of regions in terms of utilization of funds provided by the FP7 and the use of their scientifi c research capacities in human resources, to try to analyze regional differences in access to the FP7 at the regional level and compare the results with previous data on the participation of entities from the Czech Republic in the past FP.

The human resourcing component of the problem of analyzing the strategic efficiency of the industrial enterprises' projects for high-tech products (HTP) creation is highlighted. The dynamics of the key performance indicators of the aviation industry and the results of the analysis of achieving the target industry indicators in the aircraft manufacturing sector describing human resources are presented. A system is proposed for selecting the indicators for assessing the level of development of the project human resourcing. The specific features of the project human resourcing in the aviation industry of the Russian Federation are reflected. A method of assessing the level of development of personnel structural characteristics of the strategic efficiency of the HTP creation project in the aviation industry is proposed, taking into account the factor of their territorial production and assembly.

Abstract State universities are increasingly being transformed from institutions with traditional teaching and research responsibilities to have a third, societal role in sustainable regional and economic development. In doing so, universities support knowledge spillovers to improve sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems that benefit economic revitalization or further development of regions. At the same time they promote stakeholder involvement in crucial governance processes at the regional level. Based on a comparative case study design building on three cases in Germany, our research analyses these interdependencies focussing on university-linked support programmes for sustainable entrepreneurship and the effects on sustainable regional development. Our findings provide a nuanced view clarifying the different roles universities have, how knowledge spillovers are created, and what outputs, outcomes, and effects are realized at the regional level and beyond. Specifically, we demonstrate that depending on the regional context, different configurations, pathways, and intervention points of universities may equally improve sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems.
