Object of the article: the riddle of the Sphinx and the Vedic riddles. Subject of the article: structural and semantic comparison between the riddle of the Sphinx and the riddles in “Rigveda” and “Yajurveda”. Purpose of research: to show that the scheme of the riddle of the Sphinx about “man”, based on the description of an allegorical creature which is “two-footed, three-footed and fourfooted”, has a structural correspondence in the Vedic ritual-offering formulas, which describe Vedic poetic metres, divided by number of padas (“feet”) in a verse. Research methods: methods of the structural and semantic analysis applied. Results: the author argues that the poetic scheme of the Vedic ritual-offering formulas reflects an Indo-European proto-text, on which the riddle of the Sphinx is based. Field of application: literary studies. Conclusion:The author argues that the description of the Vedic metres in ritual-offering formulas through the allegorical ”two-footed (dvipada), four-footed (catushpada) and three-footed (tripada)”creatures has a structural and semantic correspondence in the riddle of the Sphinx, based on the description of an allegorical creature which is “two-footed, three-footed and four-footed”. The essay suggests that this correspondence between the Vedic formulas and the riddle of the Sphinx allows an alternative interpretation of the Greek riddle on meta-literal level as an allegorical description of poetic forms. The author is indebted to Svetlana Gracheva and Dan Whitman for stimulating discussions and helpful advice.

Object of the article: the poem “Poetry” by N.M. Karamzin. Subject of the article: meaning of “the text within a text” in Karamzin's “Poetry”. Purpose of research: to show that “a text within a text” structure in Karamzin's poem is based on “false quotations” i.e. when the “author's” text is presented in the form of ”another author's text” (quotation). Research methods: methods of comparative and structural-semantic analysis applied. Results: the author argues that the author (Karamzin) is hiding behind literary masks of Shakespeare and Klopstock. Field of application: literary studies. Conclusion: the structure of Karamzin's “Poetry” is based on the interaction between the “author's text” and the texts of the other authors.

The paper presents a coherent analysis of the famous poem by Alexander Blok «A Girl Was Singing in a Church Choir...» in an extensive historical and cultural context. Much attention is paid to the poetics of color, the colorative «white», which is characterized by semantic tension and brings the reader into the ontological space of the text. In the poem, the image of the girl is associated with white color and light, which shows that the heroine belongs to the higher, heavenly world and is opposed to «everyone» from the temple, which is in darkness. The play of light and shadow acquires a sacred nature and makes it possible to raise the question of the apophatic tradition, the appearance of «evening light» and «unfading light». The image of the heroine is also viewed from the perspective of the teaching on Sophia by Vladimir Solovyov, whose legacy was addressed by the poet. Blok draws parallels with the Russian folklore tradition, analyzing the last stanza, the image of a crying child. The appeal to folklore is fruitful, since Blok was well acquainted with oral folk art, as evidenced by the fact that he was the author of the article «Poetry of Conspiracies and Spells», written in the same period as the object of the current study, the poem «A Girl Was Singing in a Church Choir...». However, the authors of this paper interpret folklore not narrowly, but include in its field rituals, ceremonies, and pre-genre formations. The work is based on a holistic analysis of the artistic text using structural-typological, comparative, and systematic-comprehensive (culturological) research methods. These methods allow highlighting the ontological dimension in the poem, revising the views on the images of the girl and the child that have established in literary studies, avoiding unambiguousness in interpretation.

Introduction. In this article we study the secondary nominations of football teams and players in English and Russian, which are created by contextual synonyms (CS) and follow specific semantic schemes identified by us in the result of the research on football texts. The purpose of this research is to study semantic nomination schemes in English and Russian in order to establish similarities and differences in the processes of nomination and reference in the researched languages. Material and methods. The object of this study is football discourse. We looked at football coverages, articles, reports, interviews and live-text commentaries. We did not distinguish between different genres of football texts since our main focus and research subject was contextual synonymy that creates plurality of nominations. The main research methods are contextual-semantic analysis of nominations, discourse analysis, descriptive, comparative and contrastive methods. Results and discussion. We identified the schemes of secondary nomination of football teams and players that reoccur in football discourse “travelling” from one text to another. This can be indicative of relative versatility of these schemes for multiple football discourse texts. We compared the English semantic schemes with the Russian ones, identified by us in our previous research. We discovered 14 equivalent schemes common for both languages. In addition, we looked at schemes that differ in certain ways in the researched languages, or are missing at all in one of them. Conclusion. In both English and Russian, there are multiple contextually synonymous nominations of football teams and players, which follow similar semantic schemes. However, each of the languages under study shows its specific nature when it comes to forming some nominations due to structural and systemic differences of the languages. The knowledge of these schemes, especially their differences proves useful in teaching and practice of translation and interpretation, and also in journalists’ and commentators’ praxis.

A large number of conferences on automation of library processes are held abroad. These events discuss the most topical and important issues facing libraries in the implementation of modern information technologies. The article provides an overview of four major international conferences, which brought together programmers, linguists and librarians, who shared their experiences and planned for future. The authors present the analysis of changes in the subject of conferences for the recent years, conclude on the significant increase in the number of studies on semantic analysis of data stored in libraries and mark the most interesting reports. In recent years, the number of reports on Linked Open Data (LOD) has been increasing. However, most of these reports focus on the publication of data in LOD, with very little research on the extent of use of already published data. The article provides examples of such studies. The authors highlight the constant interest to the topic of Digital Humanities and to the fact that the research within this area is often focused on the problems of modern society. The article notes the new direction in the activity of electronic libraries — storage of the research data, and gives the examples of implementation of these tasks.

The article discusses issues associated with teaching vocabulary at school on a systematic and thematic basis. It is proposed to use thematic dictionaries in order to generalize the results of vocabulary analysis during Russian language and literature lessons for Russian-speaking students. Principles underpinning the selection of vocabulary for such dictionaries are characterized. Using an example of the keyword glaza (Eng. eyes, thematic group «Human appearance»), the formation of the static and dynamic parts of a dictionary entry is shown. The study was conducted using a content analysis of research and methodological literature devoted to the problem of teaching vocabulary on a thematic basis. Among other research methods were a thematic and semantic analysis of vocabulary, as well as a quantitative analysis of the results of the selection of vocabulary for a thematic vocabulary.
