In social psychology the group polarization refers to the tendency for groups to make decisionsthat are more extreme than the initial inclinations of its members. This phenomenon constitutesa potential obstacle to positive outcomes attributed to deliberative debates. A deliberative debateis a particular kind of a group discussion tasked with fi nding group consensus on controversialissues. The idea of deliberation originates from the writings of John Rawls, Jürgen Habermas, AmyGutmann and Denis Thompson. Deliberative debate imposes numerous normative requirementson the communication, relationships among the disputants and their approach to the issue underdiscussion. These normative requirements make a big difference between deliberative debates andthe situations in which the phenomenon of polarization was observed. Thus, we presume that indeliberative debates conditions the phenomenon of group polarization may be limited.The paper investigates the following questions: would the normative conditions of deliberationlimit the occurrence of polarization in discussing groups? and What infl uence (if any) would thepolarization process have on the quality of group decision? In the light of the empirical data we concluded what follows: (1) In 50% of the analyzed casesof group discussion the phenomenon of group polarization was observed despite the normativeconditions of deliberation. (2) The occurrence of group polarization in some cases coincided withmaking the fi nal decisions which did not alter the initial preferences of the disputants (but did nottotally predestinated the fi nal outcome).

Groups are often said to bear responsibility for their actions, many of which have enormous moral, legal, and social significance. The Trump Administration, for instance, is said to be responsible for the U.S.’s inept and deceptive handling of COVID-19 and the harms that American citizens have suffered as a result. But are groups subject to normative assessment simply in virtue of their individual members being so, or are they somehow agents in their own right? Answering this question depends on understanding key concepts in the epistemology of groups, as we cannot hold the Trump Administration responsible without first determining what it believed, knew, and said. Deflationary theorists hold that group phenomena can be understood entirely in terms of individual members and their states. Inflationary theorists maintain that group phenomena are importantly over and above, or otherwise distinct from, individual members and their states. It is argued that neither approach is satisfactory. Groups are more than their members, but not because they have “minds of their own,” as the inflationists hold. Instead, this book shows how group phenomena—like belief, justification, and knowledge—depend on what the individual group members do or are capable of doing while being subject to group-level normative requirements. This framework, it is argued, allows for the correct distribution of responsibility across groups and their individual members.

Surgical procedures involve major risks, as pathogens can enter the body unhindered. To prevent this, most surgical instruments and implants are sterilized. However, ensuring that this process is carried out safely and according to the normative requirements is not a trivial task. This study aims to develop a sensor system that can automatically detect successful steam sterilization on the basis of the measured temperature profiles. This can be achieved only when the relationship between the temperature on the surface of the tool and the temperature at the measurement point inside the tool is known. To find this relationship, the thermodynamic model of the system has been developed. Simulated results of thermal simulations were compared with the acquired temperature profiles to verify the correctness of the model. Simulated temperature profiles are in accordance with the measured temperature profiles, thus the developed model can be used in the process of further development of the system as well as for the development of algorithms for automated evaluation of the sterilization process. Although the developed sensor system proved that the detection of sterilization cycles can be automated, further studies that address the possibility of optimization of the system in terms of geometrical dimensions, used materials, and processing algorithms will be of significant importance for the potential commercialization of the presented solution.

Individual respiratory protection measures available on the market were analyzed in terms of mass use, taking into account legal and normative requirements. Abstract With the growing rate of urbanisation, deep foundations are playing an ever-larger role in the development of cities, reaching deeper than before to fulfil the requirements of new constructions. While current European standards include design procedures for structural and geotechnical design, they lack provisions for massive deep foundations with regard to early-age thermal effects. This paper presents aspects of the phenomenon especially important for deep foundations and discusses normative requirements that influence their thermal behaviour. Further, the paper describes the methods and results of the research carried out in the United Kingdom on 1.50-m-thick diaphragm walls of a deep circular shaft. Shaft features are described, as well as the materials used. The measurements were carried out using vibrating wire strain gauges coupled with temperature readings. The results presented refer to one of the test panels concreted in January 2020. The temperature results are analysed together with the influence of work scheduling on the readings. Strain results that indicate contractive behaviour of the test panel are investigated together with the possible causes leading to such readings. Plans and directions for future research are discussed.

In this study, varying ambient climates were simulated in a test building by changing temperature and relative humidity. Beech glued laminated timber (glulam, Fagus sylvatica, L.) was freshly installed in the test building and monitoring of the change in wood moisture content of the glulam resulting from the variations in climate was carried out. Subsequently, finger-jointed beech specimens were exposed to the variations in relative humidity measured in the course of the monitoring experiment on a laboratory scale, and thus an alternating climate regime was derived from the conditions in the test building. Its influence on the delamination of the finger-joints was evaluated. In addition, it was examined whether beech finger-joints using commercial adhesive systems fulfil the normative requirements for delamination resistance according to EN 301 (2018) and whether different bonding-wood moisture levels have an effect on the delamination of the finger-joints. In the context of the monitoring experiment, there was a clear moisture gradient in the beech glulam between the inner and near-surface wood. The applied adhesive systems showed almost the same delamination resistance after variation of relative humidity. The normative requirements were met by all PRF-bonded and by most PUR-bonded beech finger-joints with higher bonding wood moisture content.

The article considers normative requirements, organization procedure, legal forms of support by state authorities of the Chuvash Republic of socially oriented non-profit organizations that provide socially useful services to both the population as a whole and individual citizens. Emphasis is placed on the main forms of State support in the national region; in particular, we considered property, financial, information, support in the field of training, additional professional education of workers and volunteers (volunteers) of socially oriented non-profit organizations. The purpose of the study is to analyze regional measures of state support for socially oriented non-profit organizations in the social sphere within the framework of the current legislation. According to the results of the study, the authors believe that the current legislation should establish the volume and quality of socially significant services for various categories of the population provided by non-profit organizations, approve the criteria for maintaining a register of organizations that will receive state support, and develop a program of preferential loans for non-profit organizations.

This article has the form of a communication presenting recent legal changes in relation to medical devices. Until 26 May 2021, three medical directives were in force, namely Directive 98/79 / EC, Council Directive 93/42/ EEC and Council Directive 90/385 / EEC. They have been replaced by two regulations: Regulation (EU) 2017/745 on medical devices and Regulation (EU) 2017/746 on in vitro diagnostic medical devices. The article presents the reasons for introducing the changes and the new obligations that these changes bring for manufacturers of medical devices, in particular, products manufactured individually on a special order as necessary for the implementation of personalized therapies in clinical practice. There are also forecasts for the industry and end users of medical devices manufactured to order and used individually at medical centers.
