AbstractObtaining quantitative survey responses that are both accurate and informative is crucial to a wide range of fields. Traditional and ubiquitous response formats such as Likert and visual analogue scales require condensation of responses into discrete or point values—but sometimes a range of options may better represent the correct answer. In this paper, we propose an efficient interval-valued response mode, whereby responses are made by marking an ellipse along a continuous scale. We discuss its potential to capture and quantify valuable information that would be lost using conventional approaches, while preserving a high degree of response efficiency. The information captured by the response interval may represent a possible response range—i.e., a conjunctive set, such as the real numbers between 3 and 6. Alternatively, it may reflect uncertainty in respect to a distinct response—i.e., a disjunctive set, such as a confidence interval. We then report a validation study, utilizing our recently introduced open-source software (DECSYS), to explore how interval-valued survey responses reflect experimental manipulations of several factors hypothesised to influence interval width, across multiple contexts. Results consistently indicate that respondents used interval widths effectively, and subjective participant feedback was also positive. We present this as initial empirical evidence for the efficacy and value of interval-valued response capture. Interestingly, our results also provide insight into respondents’ reasoning about the different aforementioned types of intervals—we replicate a tendency towards overconfidence for those representing epistemic uncertainty (i.e., disjunctive sets), but find intervals representing inherent range (i.e., conjunctive sets) to be well-calibrated.

The University of British Columbia-Vancouver (UBC-V) implemented a campus-wide survey of faculty teaching practices and perceptions. All 11 Faculties participated, resulting in a total of 1177 responses for an overall response rate of 24%. We compared response patterns of faculty who reported spending less than 25%, between 26-50%, between 51-75%, and more than 75% of classroom time lecturing. Using this breakdown, we analysed survey responses related to in and out-of-class practices and expectations for students, use of teaching assistant time, participation in professional development opportunities, and perceptions of whether the institution valued teaching. Participants across quadrants reported employing a wide range of teaching methods irrespective of years of experience and class size. Our findings outline the range of teaching practices employed by faculty at a large research-intensive Canadian institution and may provide baseline information for institutions of similar scale and focus.

AimsIn March 2020, when the COVID-19 outbreak emerged, Technology Enabled Care (TEC) Cymru went into partnership with the Welsh Government and CWTCH Cymru to offer a safe solution to protect the NHS and the public by developing and rolling-out a National Video Consulting (VC) Service on an All-Wales basis.The aim was to quickly develop and roll-out an NHS-approved communication platform (Attend Anywhere) to all primary, secondary and community care services, and into care homes, prisons, dentistry, optometry and pharmacy to offer video consultations to patients.MethodThe NHS Wales Video Consulting (VC) Service used a robust mixed methodology of surveys and interviews with patients, families and professionals. The real-time quality improvement approach was invaluable to the team as findings continually informed the approach and direction.ResultBased upon 10,000 survey responses from patients and professionals, and more than 300 interviews the results demonstrate that video consulting is consistently high in satisfaction, clinical suitability and acceptability across a wide range of patient demographics and clinical specialties in Wales. The key findings areVery high in patient and clinician satisfaction (slightly higher in patients).Clinically suitable across a wide range of specialties, care sectors and Health Boards.Very high in patient and clinician satisfaction (slightly higher in patients).High acceptability of VC, which is believed to be associated to the ‘Welsh Way’ of digital implementation processes.Consistent data patterns across patient demographics (age, gender, urban/rural location).Consistent data patterns across clinical settings and Health Boards.ConclusionThere is large appetite for VC in Wales, with high potential of sustainability and long-term use beyond COVID-19. The service is now working with clinicians, patients, carers and policy makers to explore the long-term use and sustainability of video consultations in Wales

Frequency estimation of social facts was compared between two methods of response elicitation. In the “narrow range” method, respondents answered questions like: “Out of 100 instances, how many instances belong to category X?”. In the “wide range” method, the same question was asked regarding “Out of 10,000.” A previous study in 1994 showed that judged frequencies were proportionally greater in the narrow condition than in the wide condition when subjects estimated the occurrence of low-frequency events. These results were interpreted to reflect cognitive processes of anchoring, wherein judged frequencies he close to small numbers within particular response ranges. The current work extends this argument to high-frequency events. In such cases, judgments about high-frequency events would be reached by similar cognitive processes operating toward the opposite direction. Hence, I predicted that judged frequencies for high-frequency events would be proportionally greater in the wide than in the narrow condition. Results were mostly consistent with these predictions. The relation to previous research is discussed.

PurposePost-diagnostic dementia care is often fragmented in the United Kingdom, with great variation in provision. Recent policies suggest moving towards better community-based care for dementia; however, little is known on how this care is delivered. This study aimed to map the post-diagnostic dementia support provided in England a decade after the introduction of a National Dementia Strategy.Design/methodology/approachA mixed-methods e-survey (open Nov 2018–Mar 2019) of dementia commissioners in England recruited through mailing lists of relevant organisations was conducted. The authors descriptively summarised quantitative data and carried out thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses.Findings52 completed responses were received, which covered 82 commissioning bodies, with representation from each region in England. Respondents reported great variation in the types of services provided. Information, caregiver assessments and dementia navigation were commonly reported and usually delivered by the voluntary sector or local authorities. Integrated pathways of care were seen as important to avoid overlap or gaps in service coverage. Despite an increasingly diverse population, few areas reported providing dementia health services specifically for BME populations. Over half of providers planned to change services further within five years.Practical implicationsThere is a need for greater availability of and consistency in services in post-diagnostic dementia care across England.Originality/valuePost-diagnostic dementia care remains fragmented and provided by a wide range of providers in England.

Two induced aggregation operators with novelly designed TOPSIS order-inducing variables are proposed: Induced Interval-valued Intuitionistic Fuzzy Hybrid Averaging (I-IIFHA) operator and Induced Interval-valued Intuitionistic Fuzzy Hybrid Geometric (I-IIFHG) operator. The merit of two aggregation operators is that they can consider additional preference information of decision maker’s attitudinal characteristics besides argument-dependent information and argument-independent information. Some desirable properties of I-IIFHA and I-IIFHG are studied and theoretical analysis also shows that they can include a wide range of aggregation operators as special cases. Further, we extend these operators to form a novel group decision-making method for selecting the most desirable alternative in multiple attribute multi-interest group decision-making problems with attribute values and decision maker’s interest values taking the form of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy numbers, and application research to real estate purchase selection shows its practicality.

Purpose To date, few studies have examined school-based pediatric feeding and swallowing practices across the United States. This study aims to (a) identify barriers to feeding and swallowing service provision in an educational setting and (b) identify the types of service suggested by school-based speech-language pathologists in response to a fictional case study. Method School-based speech-language pathologists and clinical fellows were invited to participate in a 15-min web-based survey. The survey questions addressed demographic and vocational information and perceived barriers to service provision. Survey respondents were also asked to develop a treatment plan in response to a fictional case study. In total, 200 anonymous survey responses were coded and analyzed using qualitative analysis methods. Results A number of barriers to practice were identified, which include academic and/or clinical preparedness and concerns related to the educational relevance of service. Analysis of the case study results indicated a wide range of treatment plans. The most common type of direct intervention suggested was an oral motor exercise regime, followed by diet modifications, and the implementation of safe swallow strategies. Conclusions Information gained in this study may be used to support policies and protocols related to the assessment and treatment of pediatric feeding and swallowing impairment in school settings.

ObjectiveTo determine whether NeuroBytes is a helpful e-Learning tool in neurology through usage, viewer type, estimated time and cost of development, and post-course survey responses.BackgroundA sustainable continuing professional development (CPD) system is vital in neurology due to the field’s expanding therapeutic options and vulnerable patient populations. In an effort to offer concise, evidence based updates to a wide range of neurology professionals, the AAN launched NeuroBytes in 2018. NeuroBytes are brief (<5 min) videos that provide high-yield updates to AAN members.MethodsNeuroBytes was beta tested from August–December 2018 and launched for pilot circulation from January–April 2019. Usage was assessed by quantifying course enrollment and completion rates; feasibility by cost and time required to design and release a module; appeal by user satisfaction; and impact by self-reported change in practice.ResultsA total of 5,130 NeuroBytes enrollments (1,026±551/month) occurred from January 11–May 28, 2019 with a median of 588 enrollments per module (interquartile range, 194-922) and 37% course completion. The majority of viewers were neurologists (54%), neurologists in training (26%), and students (8%). NeuroBytes took 59 hours to develop at an estimated $77.94/hour. Of the 1,895 users who completed the survey, 82% were “extremely” or “very likely” to recommend NeuroBytes to a colleague and 60% agreed that the depth of educational content was “just right.”ConclusionsNeuroBytes is a user-friendly, easily accessible CPD product that delivers concise updates to a broad range of neurology practitioners and trainees. Future efforts will explore models where NeuroBytes combines with other CPD programs to impact quality of training and clinical practice.

This study explores the role of networks in generating economic value for event tourism in towns and smaller cities in the UK. While networks have been shown to create a wide range of value, research in this context is limited and little is understood of if or how economic value is generated. The lens used in this study was the value creating side of the business model canvas with local government organisations as the focal node examining the flow of economic value from partners, activities and resources. There were survey responses from 112 different town and city organisations across the UK. The study found that only the ‘activities’ element of the network contributed significantly to creating economic value in an event tourism context. The network components of ‘partners’ and ‘resources’ were not on their own significant to the creation of economic value. The outcomes of this paper suggest that practitioners in towns and cities should strategise their engagement with local networks through a formal event tourism strategy that clearly defines how they operationalise engagement activities within that network in order the facilitate economic value creation. In addition, the paper raises questions around what resources are needed at the focal node (local government organisations) in order to maximise the economic value created by the network.

When component dependence is ignored, a system reliability model may have large model (epistemic) uncertainty with wide reliability bounds. This makes decision making difficult during the system design. Component dependence exists due to the shared environment and operation conditions. It is difficult for system designers to model component dependence because they may not have access to component design details if the components are designed and manufactured by outside suppliers. This research intends to reduce the system reliability model uncertainty with a new way for system designers to consider the component dependence implicitly and automatically without knowing component design details. The proposed method is applicable for a wide range of applications where the time-dependent system stochastic load is shared by components of the system. Simulation is used to obtain the extreme value of the system load for a given period of time, and optimization is employed to estimate the system reliability interval. As a result, the epistemic uncertainty in system reliability can be reduced.
