Legendary Narrative Schemes and the Poetics of Literary ›Sachlichkeit‹ in Joseph Roth’s Novel Tarabas. Ein Gast auf dieser Erde (1934) The article examines Joseph Roth’s position on the literature of ›Neue Sachlichkeit‹ using Tarabas as an example. In the first part, it analyses the statements made in Roth’s essays and shows that the author necessarily wants the literary representation of reality to be linked to its aesthetic formation. It then goes on to examine how Tarabas draws on legendary narrative schemes in the biography of its protagonist but problematizes them with regard to the necessary observation of reality. In a concluding third step, it shows that through the person of the protagonist the novel exaggerates and thus rejects essential aspects of the anthropology of ›Neue Sachlichkeit‹.

Over the past three or four years, great strides have been made in our understanding of the proteins involved in recombination and the mechanisms by which recombinant molecules are formed. This review summarizes our current understanding of the process by focusing on recent studies of proteins involved in the later steps of recombination in bacteria. In particular, biochemical investigation of the in vitro properties of the E. coli RuvA, RuvB and RuvC proteins have provided our first insight into the novel molecular mechanisms by which Holliday junctions are moved along DNA and then resolved by endonucleolytic cleavage.

Building on the case made in chapter 3, chapter 4 tunes to consider Martin Chuzzlewit and examines the ways in which the novel addresses the relationship between literacy, print media, and the experience of modern urbanism. Together eith its predecessor, the chapter argues that for Dickens America was far more than what has been generally perceived as an increasingly negative experience that chastened his understanding of the press and of mass culture. Rather, and notwithstanding all his complaints about Americans, tobacco, and spit, the encounter with America in fact provided him with a new sense, at once disturbing and alluring, of the potential power of a cheap mass-market press led by entrepreneurial editors operating in a print environment unconstrained by state controls. Moreover, in writing about America, and above all in writing about its newspapers in both American Notes and Martin Chuzzlewit, Dickens for the first time discovered a methodology for fusing fiction and the press in ways that would be foundational his most significant contribution to Victorian journalism, Household Words and its successor, All the Year Round.

In the present scenario, around 15% of the world's population experience some form of disability. So, there has been an enormous increase in the demand for assistive techniques for overcoming the restraints faced by people with physical impairments. More recently, gesture-based character recognition (GBCR) has emerged as an assistive tool of immense importance, especially for facilitating the needs of persons with special necessities. Such GBCR systems serve as a powerful mediator for communication among people having hearing and speech impairments. They can also serve as a rehabilitative aid for people with motor disabilities who cannot write with pen on paper, or face difficulty in using common human-machine interactive (HMI) devices. This chapter provides a glimpse of disability prevalence around the globe and particularly in India, emphasizes the importance of learning-based GBCR systems in practical education of differently-abled children, and highlights the novel research contributions made in this field.

B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is a hematologic malignancy that arises from the clonal expansion of transformed B-cell precursors and predominately affects childhood. Even though significant progresses have been made in the treatment of B-ALL, pediatric patients’ outcome has to be furtherly increased and alternative targeted treatment strategies are required for younger patients. Over the last decade, novel approaches have been used to understand the genomic landscape and the complexity of the molecular biology of pediatric B-ALL, mainly next generation sequencing, offering important insights into new B-ALL subtypes, altered pathways, and therapeutic targets that may lead to improved risk stratification and treatments. Here, we will highlight the up-to-date knowledge of the novel B-ALL subtypes in childhood, with particular emphasis on altered signaling pathways. In addition, we will discuss the targeted therapies that showed promising results for the treatment of the different B-ALL subtypes.

In the climactic scene of James Baldwin's 1968 novel Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone, the narrator and protagonist, Leo Proudhammer, appears with his friend and lover Barbara in the living room of a Jewish acting teacher named Saul San-Marquand, the artistic director of the Actors’ Means Workshop. Leo and Barbara have been hanging around the small town in New Jersey where the Workshop has decamped for the summer season. At last, they have been given their promised chance to perform a scene for Saul, who will decide on the basis of that scene whether or not they will be accepted as members of the Workshop. They have prepared a scene from Clifford Odets's Waiting for Lefty in which Flor and Sid, a young couple, break off their relationship under pressure from Flor's brother. Leo, who is black, and Barbara, who is white, have just admitted their love for each other; their impossible interracial relationship underlies the novel. When they arrive in Saul's apartment, they have just walked through town together to the obscene and threatening jeers of the white townspeople, validating their decision, made in bed hours earlier, that their relationship can never be public.

During the mid-1990s the Australian literary scene was shaken by controversy over issues of antisemitism and Holocaust representation in Helen Demidenko's debut novel, The Hand That Signed the Paper. In 2017, Darville reissued the novel. At a time when debate is raging over the nature and limits of freedom of expression and the status of words and facts, this was a provocative move. This article revisits The Hand in order to resolve the issues of literary antisemitism and freedom of speech that it raised in 1994 and continues to raise today. I apply Avishai Margalit's notion of an “ethics of memory” to the autofictional text in order to develop a theory of an “ethics of narration” in literary fiction. This narrative ethics enables distinctions to be made in relation to truth claims and fictionality, which were opaque in Demidenko's original autofiction and remain unresolved in the reissued version.

In many emerging economies worldwide, and in South Africa in particular, sizeable investments have been made in education with the hope of increasing literacy rates and hence producing a workforce that will fit into the job market. Thus it is important to understand the context and literacy materials within South African classrooms and their impact. This article looks at the novel Broken promises by Roz Haden, which is read in many South African classrooms. From a post-structural feminist theory and functional language theory, we analyse how the portrayal of characters and storyline can have an impact on young readers’ identity construction in relation to the novel’s predominant discourses. The findings show that men are still portrayed as dominant in their own right within society whereas women are defined in relation to men. Unchallenged, this portrayal can continue to perpetuate gendered stereotypes, which would affect young people’s functionality in society. We therefore argue that while novels are good for improving literacy among young people, the messages they contain should be deconstructed and challenged so that young people can make informed decisions regarding their gender identities.

Recently, online testing has become an increasingly important instrument in developmental research, in particular since the COVID-19 pandemic made in-lab testing impossible. However, online testing comes with two substantial challenges. First, it is unclear how valid results of online studies really are. Second, implementing online studies can be costly and/or require profound coding skills. This article addresses the validity of an online testing approach that is low-cost and easy to implement: The experimenter shares test materials such as videos or presentations via video chat and interactively moderates the test session. To validate this approach, we compared children’s performance on a well-established task, the change-of-location false belief task, in an in-lab and online test setting. In two studies, 3- and 4-year-old received online implementations of the false belief version (Study 1) and the false and true belief version of the task (Study 2). Children’s performance in these online studies was compared to data of matching tasks collected in the context of in-lab studies. Results revealed that the typical developmental pattern of performance in these tasks found in in-lab studies could be replicated with the novel online test procedure. These results suggest that the proposed method, which is both low-cost and easy to implement, provides a valid alternative to classical in-person test settings.

Investigating the literary representation of urban spaces and identities, my paper untangles the complex psychological and emotional relationship between the heroine and her beloved and hated cities in Sunetra Gupta’s The Glassblower’s Breath (1993). Drawing on Gernot Böhme’s (1993) theory of the atmospheric qualities of space, Steve Pile’s psychogeographical approach to reading cities, Walter Benjamin’s concept of phantasmagoria and various interpretations of fascination, the paper explores the creation of atmospheres in the novel and the role of fascination in the perception of London and Gupta’s female protagonist as phantasmagorias. I argue that – as urban imaginaries – the emotional fabric and atmosphere of the cities portrayed are as much created by their spaces and places, their inhabitants and visitors, as are manifested and formulated in emotional states of being, whether real or fictional, phantasmagoric or imaginary.

Purpose. The task of this article is to study the use of gemination that is the stylistic device of repetition. It is used to depict the emotional states of the characters in the novel “451 degrees Fahrenheit” by the American writer Ray Bradbury. Until now this topic has not been examined thoroughly in scientific studies. It seems interesting to mark gemination as positive and negative one by means of the context that helps to acquire a certain expressive and evaluative judgment.Methods. The research is carried out using a descriptive method for cataloguing, systematization, and classification of factual material, as well as methods of theoretical generalization and analysis. The method of contextual analysis is used to clarify the role of expressive means in the text of the novel. This method is aimed at revealing the context, taking into account the author’s intention, and commented on the means of expression used by the writer. The application of these methods allows analyzing the use of the stylistic figure gemination as an expression of the characters’ different emotional states.Results. The article considers the theoretical aspects of repetition and stylistic devices which are based on its principle. In the novel, repetition functions as one of the principles to verbalize the expression of the characters’ emotional states. The views of linguists on the peculiarities of gemination’s functioning in the language are analyzed. The attempt to give the definition to this stylistic device is made. In linguistics, gemination is characterized as a phenomenon of the expressive syntax that has a contact location. The achievement of the influential effect is due to redundancy. Conclusions. The analyzed examples which are based on gemination mostly describe negative emotions. The number of examples in the novel where gemination is used to denote positive emotions is rather small. It is emphasized that such a distribution is not usual as it depends on the genre, the text’s general tone, and the context of the analyzed stylistic device.Key words: repetition, stylistic devices, expressive syntax, fiction, function, emotion. Мета наукової розвідки полягає в дослідженні вживання стилістичної фігури повтору гемінації, яку використано для зображення емоційного стану персонажів у романі американського письменника РеяБредбері «451 градус за Фаренгейтом», що до сьогодні не ставало предметом ретельних наукових студіювань. Цікавим видається позитивне та негативне маркування стилістичної фігури, яка залежно від контексту набуває певного експресивно-оціночного судження.Методи. Дослідження здійснено за допомогою описового методу – для інвентаризації, систематизації і класифікації фактологічного матеріалу, а також методів теоретичного узагальнення та аналізу. Для з’ясування ролі експресивного засобу в тек-сті роману було використано метод контекстуального аналізу, який спрямовано на розкриття контексту з урахуванням задуму автора та було прокоментовано виражальні засоби, якими послуговувався письменник. Використання зазначених методів дозволило здійснити аналіз уживання стилістичної фігури гемінація як виразника різних емоційних станів персонажів твору.Результати. У статті розглянуто теоретичні аспекти фігури мови повтору та стилістичних фігур, які засновані на його принципі. У тексті роману повтор функціонує як один із принципів вербалізації вираження емоційних станів персонажів. Детально проаналізовано ті з них, які використано як інструмент досягнення експресивності. Розглянуто точки зору вчених-лінгвістів на особливості функціонування гемінації в мові та зроблено спробу надати дефініцію зазначеному явищу. У науко-вих лінгвістичних розвідках гемінація характеризується як фігура експресивного синтаксису. Зазначене явище має контактне розташування, а досягнення впливового ефекту відбувається за рахунок надлишковості. Вживання гемінації у тексті привер-тає увагу читачів, акцентує увагу на найголовнішому, допомагає відобразити настрій та емоції героїв твору.Висновки. У статті звернено увагу на вживання стилістичних фігур, які засновано на принципі повтору і є семантико-стилістичною домінантою у творі письменника. Досліджувані приклади, які засновані на вживанні фігури мови гемінації, в основному описують негативні емоції. Кількість прикладів у романі, де гемінація вживається на позначення позитивних емоцій, складає незначну кількість. Наголошено, що такий розподіл не є закономірним, а залежить від жанру, загального тону твору та контексту аналізованої фігури. Ключові слова: повтор, стилістичні засоби, експресивний синтаксис, художній текст, функція, емоція.
