Extracurricular activities as a variety of organizational forms of students gathering in free extracurricular time at elementary school have predominantly cultural, artistic, sporting, technical, recreational or scientific character (Cindrić, 1992). Through them, students meet their needs and develop the culture of using their leisure time. Thanks to its pedagogic potential, chess is increasingly used as an educational tool and taught in elementary schools around the world. This trend begins to follow Croatia, where chess in many schools is carried out as an extracurricular and/or extracurricular activity. In this paper we will present and analyze the advantages that chess has for the elementary school students and empirically determine the occurrence of chess as an extracurricular activity in the schools in the City of Zagreb. Also, based on the results of the qualitative research, the views of the chess teachers regarding advantages of chess implementation, ways of determining the interests of students, and teaching methods used in chess teaching will be presented.

The aim of this study is to assess the potential impact of extracurricular activities on the academic performance of elementary school students. Attendance or not attendance, type of extracurricular activities (recreational, cognitive or both) and the number of hours a week have been taken into account. The final sample consisted of a total of 721 elementary school students (366 boys and 355 girls) from various schools in the counties of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. Parents of the students were provided with a questionnaire asking for the pupils’ grades in different academic subjects (mathematics, Catalan, Spanish and English languages, gymnastics and arts) and information about type and amount of extracurricular activities. The results show that performing any kind of extracurricular activity improves academic performance. More specifically, performance of some activity (whether recreational or cognitive, or a combination of both) significantly accounts for improvement in academic results, except for math, gymnastics and arts. Also, the study shows that a high number of hours of extracurricular activities (more than 10 hours a week) negatively affect the performance in all subjects except in gymnastics.

This research aims to know speaking teaching methods used at Kampung Inggris Pontianak for elementary school students and tutor obstacles during teaching activity. The method applied in this research was qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. The data were collected from interview and observation with the owner of Kampung Inggris Pontianak, West Kalimantan. It was found that English speaking skill to elementary school students was separated into four levels; basic, intermediate 1, intermediate 2, and advanced. There are five methods applied by Kampung Inggris Pontianak to improve students English speaking skill. Flashcards, watching movies, listening, games, and singing. There were two kinds of obstacles that tutors face during the class. First, most of the tutors’ backgrounds were non-educational. So, they found it hard, sometimes, to control their elementary students who are very energetic. They might have English language competence. However, it is not adequate as their only competence to teach students compared to tutors with English educational background. Therefore, Kampung Inggris Pontianak holds micro-teaching practices to see tutor candidate performances before coming into class. Second, new students made many false answers on the placement test just to make them get into a lower level class than they are supposed to be. The researcher hopes this research will give knowledge to the reader of how tutors in Kampung Inggris Pontianak teaches speaking skills to their students.

The article considers both theoretical issues related to the specifics of the environmental education of younger schoolchildren and the aspects of the teacher’s organization of the relevant work, which involves a combination of lessons and extracurricular activities. The relevance of individual extracurricular work, including the joint activity of an adult and a child, is substantiated.

Children leisure time is usually decided by their immediate environment, i.e. their family. Therefore, leisure activities which are designed in a family and which enable children to discover pleasant experiences and motivate them to care of their own health are of extreme importance. The aim of the study was to highlight the peculiarities of the organization of leisure time activities in a family for elementary school students in the context of health education. The respondents of the study were 614 elementary school students from eight Western Lithuania schools and 604 of their parents. The study has shown that elementary school students rate their health more favourably than their parents. Almost half of the respondents- children (42.7%) have rated their health as very good and around the same number of children (45.3%) have rated it as good. One fifth of respondents- parents (20.7%) have rated the health of their children as very good and more than half of parents (62.3%) have said that the health of their children is good. The opinion of parents and their children on the issue of the time allocated for leisure activities has been discovered as being similar. Respondentschildren indicate that on weekdays their leisure time averages to 2.4 hours/day and at the weekends to 4.3 hours/day. Respondents-parents indicate that children’s leisure time on weekdays lasts for 2.2 hours/ day, and at the weekends it reaches 4.4 hours /day. It has been revealed that the longer the leisure time the children have, the better their health is. The majority of children (78%) believe that they have enough leisure time. Those, who assume that they do not have enough leisure time, and those, who are undecided, make almost one-fourth (24%). A third of elementary school students enjoy physically active forms of leisure time activities (going in for sports) while about a half of respondents-children prefer passive forms of leisure time activities (artistic activities, watching TV, playing computer games, reading books). Respondents- children point out that they devote on average 3.4 hours/day for passive forms of activities and 2.2.hours/day for physical active leisure activities. Their parents state that children spend 4.3 hours /day for passive activities and 1.8 hours/day for physical active leisure activities. Only about one-tenth of families engage themselves in mutual active forms of physical activities and play sports together. Therefore, the leisure time spent by children together with the family is not sufficiently active.

Software education has emerged as a hot topic around the world, with the goal to raise interests on computational thinking. However, assessments on the computational thinking have not been actively conducted thus far. According to a study by Lee (2019), which analyzed 138 papers on computational thinking published in Korean journals from 2015 to 2018, software education has been introduced and studies on computational thinking are being conducted, but studies on teaching methods that2 improve computational thinking are needed. In this study, we developed and applied a primary educational programming language(EPL) program focused on execution time analysis aimed at improving computational thinking. By using the “Bebras Challenge” as an assessment tool and SPSS as a statistical tool, educational effects were analyzed through the results of pre- and post-computational thinking assessments. The analysis outcomes showed that the EPL education focused on execution time analysis was effective in improving the computational thinking of elementary school students. Putting execution time analysis EPL into primary software education as an educational topic will be effective in improving computational thinking.
