The main objective of this research is to measure the efficiency of 397 major industrial enterprises in Sichuan province of China in 2013.To this end, we employed DEA super slacks-based measure (Super-SBM) model for performance evaluation of 397 major manufacturing firms. The empirical results show that 21 of the 397 enterprises operate efficiently, and the average efficiency score of the analyzed enterprises is only 0.15. The enterprise with the highest efficiency score is 96.15% higher than the average score, which is the benchmark enterprise of operational efficiency. Among the selected sample enterprises, 5.29% of the industrial enterprises are highly efficient in operation. It was also noticed that the average efficiency score of pharmaceutical firms was the highest among all industrial firms with a mean score of 0.75, which is 80% higher than the overall average score of all industries. While the average efficiency of manufacturing of chemical raw materials and chemical products was the lowest with a mean score of 0.39. Results of sensitivity analysis show that profit has a great impact on the efficiency score of special equipment manufacturing firms, but a relatively weak impact on the firms which manufacture computers, communications, and other electronic equipment. The effect of export delivery value on efficiency score is not obvious.

This study measured the efficiency of fixed income unit trust funds and equity unit trust funds for the period of January 2004 to December 2014. A total of 36 fixed income funds and 109 equity funds were evaluated using stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) technique with three inputs (expense ratio, portfolio turnover ratio, and fund management stated fee) and one output variable (return). The econometric technique was used to measure the portfolio efficiency score as well as to compare the efficiency of fixed income funds and equity funds. The results indicated that the average efficiency score for equity unit trust funds was higher than fixed income unit trust funds. Nevertheless, when the samples were categorized into panel data, the average efficiency score for fixed income funds increased throughout ten years. Meanwhile the average score for equity funds was consistent over the years. It shows that time is invariant for equity funds. However, this means that the performance efficiency for both types of funds was considered excellent and efficient. The results indicate that the mean efficiency achieved in unit trust industry is almost 100% of its potential output.

The forest products industry is an important socioeconomic sector to many developing countries, both in terms of foreign exchange earnings and employment. In the case of Malaysia, the industry has been one of the fastest growing manufacturing sectors in the country, driven primarily by comparative advantages derived from factor inputs. However, with increasing competition from other cheaper producing nations particularly China and Vietnam, the Malaysian forest products industry is forced to transform and move along the value-chain through innovation and value-addition. Although the government has played a pivotal role in providing a broad policy framework to support value-adding and innovative activities, success on the ground has been limited. The creativity environment, which is plagued with by low-wage economy, coupled with limited network between research, market and industrial enterprises have stifled innovation within the industry. The lack of information and the poor quality human capital has also contributed to the limited innovation within the forest products industry in the country. Against this background, most innovation within the industry is confined to the realms of alternative raw materials, with minimal technological and design variations. Although extensive research and development activities are undertaken, the commercialization potential of the research outputs is limited due to being not market-driven. Inevitably, innovation in the forest products sector must be based on market-needs and must be driven through technological and design change in order to ensure long-term competitiveness.

Purpose. The purpose of the article is to determine the prospects of deep processing of corn in Ukraine, taking into account the restraining factors of development, on the basis of the analysis of the state and tendencies of functioning of the world market of corn. Methodology / approach. During the research, general scientific and special research methods were used, in particular: analysis and synthesis, scientific abstraction – in determining the purpose and formulating conclusions; comparative, calculation, statistical and graphical ones – in the assessment, analysis, comparison and establishment of patterns of the current state and trends in the production of corn and its deep processing; program-target one – to substantiate the factors of intensification of deep processing of corn in Ukraine. Results. The analysis was carried out and tendencies of world corn production were determined. The shares of countries-producers and countries-consumers of corn were calculated; their dynamics of changes were analyzed. Analysis of the dynamics of prices for corn grain on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange indicates that the price of raw materials is gradually declining, so agricultural enterprises that sell corn as a raw material, lose income from its production. The structure of corn use in different directions in the world was analyzed, and the structure of its use in the USA was considered in more detail. Factors of activation of deep processing of corn were identified. In Ukraine, deep grain processing as an industry is just beginning to develop, so it is worth processing corn, based on the experience of leading countries, such as the USA and China. Estimated costs for the construction of a modern plant for deep processing of corn and income from the implementation of this investment project were calculated. Originality/scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the study is a comprehensive analysis of the world corn market; economic substantiation of expediency of corn processing in Ukraine; improving the system of factors to intensify the development of deep processing of corn in Ukraine. Practical value / implications. The practical value of the results of the study is that they will contribute to the formation of the concept of intensifying the development of deep processing of corn in Ukraine. The main results can be used by agro-industrial enterprises during the development of deep corn processing projects.

The most important characteristic of the economic activity of an industrial enterprise is the level of its financial standing. The higher this level, the more attractive is the company for shareholders, banks, service, raw materials and components buyers and suppliers, the more competitive its products are. In recent years, we have seen an unfavorable business climate both in Russia and around the world, which, on the one hand, forces some companies to cut costs or completely withdraw from the market, and on the other, it fosters companies’ attention to creative function, and not only in relation to the products being created, but also to the enterprise management model, the distribution and use of resources. In this connection, the possibility of using sourcing’s technologies in the issue of improving the financial stability of an industrial enterprise through the restructuring of its distribution model and the use of resources is of interest. To achieve this goal, we have used the sourcing’s maneuver model "higher utilization of production areas by providing outsourcing services". The development of proposals for improving the financial standing of the enterprise was carried out through the application of the "direct-hosting" system. In the present work, the authors developed proposals for improving the financial standing of an industrial enterprise through the application of the sourcing’s maneuver model. The results of this work can be useful for further scientific research in the field of economy of sourcing and development of the "direct-hosting" system. They can also be useful for managers of financial and economic units of large industrial enterprises. The developed proposals for improving the financial standing of an industrial enterprise through sorsing maneuver suggest the prospect of further scientific work in the field of forming methodological approaches for making managerial decisions.

Research in the sphere of the Arctic industrial development often leads to the identification of clear regulatory gaps of a systemic nature. A particular example is the issue of legislative regulation of the involvement of secondary raw materials, fuel and energy resources in economic use and property turnover in the context of resource conservation and resource efficiency. In this case, secondary resources are not subject to independent regulation in general, but only as one of the elements of activities related to environmental protection. Accordingly, the conditions for the development of a system of production and consumption wastes’ effective management, the creation of a recycling industry, including the reuse of such waste, have not been formed yet. The results of the analysis given in this research paper clearly indicate the lack of development of mechanisms for stimulating the use of non-target materials and substances. Industrial enterprises that use secondary resources in production do not currently receive special advantages within the framework of the implemented industrial policy. System benefits are universal and directly related to commodity production only. However, it is necessary to apply measures to encourage industrial activities to implement projects involving the reuse of secondary resources in production, including in the Russian Arctic.

Biobased liquid fuels are becoming an attractive alternative to replace, totally or partially, fossil ones in the medium term, mainly in aviation and long-distance transportation. In this regard, coprocessing biomass-derived feedstocks in conventional oil refineries might facilitate the transition from the current fossil-based transport to a biobased one. This article addresses the economic and environmental feasibility of such a coprocessing strategy. The biomass-based feedstocks considered include bio-oil and char from the fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, which are coprocessed in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC), hydrocracking, and/or cogasification units. The assessment was based on the standardized concept of eco-efficiency, which relates the environmental and economic performances of a system following a life-cycle approach. Data from a complete simulation of the refinery process, from raw materials to products, were used to perform a life cycle costing and eco-efficiency assessment of alternative configurations of the coprocessing strategy, which were benchmarked against the conventional fossil refinery system. Among other relevant results, the eco-efficiency related to the system’s carbon footprint was found to improve when considering coprocessing in the hydrocracking unit, while coprocessing in FCC generally worsens the eco-efficiency score. Overall, it is concluded that coprocessing biomass-based feedstock in conventional crude oil refineries could be an eco-efficient energy solution, which requires a careful choice of the units where biofeedstock is fed.

This study aims to gain a better understanding of how effective government subsidization is in helping foster firms’ innovation. Drawing on the exploration/exploita- tion perspective and based on data collected from Statistical Yearbook on Science and Technology Activities of Industrial Enterprises, we look into the relationship between gov- ernment subsidization and Chinese firms’ innovation efficiency by applying a stochastic frontier analysis. The results show that when government subsidies are provided in small scale, firms’ innovation efficiency decreases; only when government subsidies increase to a certain scale, does firms’ innovation efficiency start to increase. We suggest that govern- ment subsidization would generate better innovation performance should it concentrate on a smaller number of firms at one time. As existing research is still inconclusive regarding the relationship between government subsidization and firms’ technological innovation output, we shed light on the issue by revealing a “U-shaped” relationship between the two.

The life of a modern person today cannot be imagined free from an urgent and urgent problem – the problem of waste recycling. At the same time, the environmental situation in large cities, including industrial enterprises, is mainly determined by the state of the waste treatment system. These include solid municipal waste, as experts call the garbage that is formed daily in everyday life and makes a long way from the garbage chute to the yard container and further to the city dump.At the moment, the infrastructure for collecting and processing secondary raw materials (glass, plastic, paper, batteries, etc.) is developing on the territory of many CIS countries, including Russia, while there are no reception points for textile waste of production and consumption in sufficient quantities, unlike in European countries. There are retail outlets that accept unnecessary textiles from the population, and in return provide discounts on their products. However, taking into account the volume of textile waste generation (about 4.2–4.8 million tons per year), the existing textile waste collection system, which collects only about 0.4% of textile waste, is clearly insufficient. Based on the identified problems, the authors of this article give a socio-ecological and economic assessment of the problem of handling textile waste of consumption in Russia. The analysis of the relationship of the problems of textile waste management to the UN Sustainable Development Goals is carried out. The international experience of applying the principles of the closed-cycle economy in relation to textile waste is considered and recommendations for the transition of the Russian textile industry to a closed-cycle economy are formed.

There is no effective method of homogeneity measurement of compost prism. The most frequently used technology is the examination of the particle distribution. This method needs a lot of time and large number of samples. The aim of our research is establishing different effective methods to determine the homogeneity of compost prisms. During our work, we examined the homogeneity of a prism made of sewage sludge and saw-dust mixture. The measurements were based on the different properties of raw materials. According to this we examined the homogeneity by moisture content, heavy metal content and gas distribution measurements. The most effective method is the measurement of gasconcentration. Although gas-concentration measurements it need special equipment it has more advantages than the other methods. The examination of gas-distribution compensates the problem of sampling because the measurement is direct. It provides the opportunity to estimate the amount of emitted toxic gases and to determine the maturity of the compost and the effectiveness of the degradation.
