This chapter presents an empirical study involving first-year students enrolled in the Faculty of Psychology (University of Bologna), who are following a practical formative activity based on Computer-Supported Group-Based Learning. The learning activity is conducted in a blended-learning format—three face-to-face lessons and three online activities; students were randomly associated to two different experimental conditions of participation: Individual Learning (IL) and Group-Based Learning (GBL). Focusing on GBL students, this chapter intends to verify whether different Structural Profiles of Interpersonal Skills (SPIS) might improve the students’ comprehension of a scientific text. By analyzing the results of test and re-test, the students with a High Actor-SPIS make a significant improvement, and the groups with a High Density and Low Centralization make significant progress at the ReTest.

This case study aims to investigate the forces and barriers to learners’ motivation in a blended learning environment. This study uses an online forum as a vehicle for useful interaction among learners and as an extension of traditional classroom face-to-face meetings. 48 first-year students in a UAE university participated in this study. A series of data were obtained through questionnaires and feedback from the students, which were subsequently analyzed and compared to the existing literature. The results revealed that online interaction can enhance learners’ motivation and engagement in the learning process.

This paper explores the peculiarities of blended learning approach in teaching Maritime English. The research is aimed to reveal the pedagogical potential of Blended Learning approach in teaching Maritime English. The conceptual idea of the paper is grounded on the recognition of digitalization potential to transform how higher education is delivered and how people learn at different stages of their lives. The research reveals the pedagogical potential of computer-based tools and blended learning approach in Maritime English classroom. The attempt has been made to provide the effective techniques and methods of professionally-oriented communicative competency formation and development by means of Blended Learning implementation at different stages of professional Maritime training. The on-line course in Maritime English, delivered to the learners via LMS Moodle, which is complemented with the face-to-face traditional classroom learning, is described in the research to exemplify the use of the Blended Learning approach for teaching first year students of maritime educational institutions.

ABSTRACT The COVID 19 pandemic has demanded that people adapt to a new normal life, including theeducation sector. This condition is a challenge for schools and the community. To avoid thewidespread spread of the Covid-19 virus, schools must temporarily stop face-to-face learningactivities. The blended learning method is a solution to these conditions. Blended learningactivities are not only seen as a combination of online and face-to-face learning. However,this learning activity has a great opportunity to integrate innovation in educationaltechnology and can be done online or face-to-face. Besides, blended learning is a solution toanswering challenges in assembling learning and developing students' creativity. Even in thelong term, blended learning is an important requirement for every school to face a brighterfuture. The implementation method in this program consists of the planning, implementation,and evaluation stages. The partners involved in this program are a team of IT experts at theLocal Government of Kediri. Also, the partners involved are also active as speakers ofeducational technology. Selain itu, blended learning juga sebagai solusi dalam menjawabtantangan dalam merangkai pembelajaran serta pengembangan kreativitas peserta didik,bahkan dalam jangka panjang pembelajaran berbasis blended learning menjadi kebutuhanpenting bagi setiap sekolah guna menyongsong masa depan yang lebih cerah. Metodepelaksanaan dalam pengabdian ini terdiri dari tahap perencanaan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi.Mitra yang dilibatkan dalam pengabdian ini adalah tim tenaga ahli IT di Pemerintah Kota Kediri. Selain itu mitra yang terlibat juga aktif sebagai pembicara di bidang teknologipendidikan. Sedangkan sasaran dari pengabdian ini adalah guru dan Dinas Pendidikan. Traditional teaching has been changing with the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Blended learning is a new approach that enriches the education of students in order to improve their performance in their different subjects. Mathematics learning is a subject matter that is particularly difficult for students. The present chapter targets the application of a cybernetic model for blended learning in the teaching of mathematics, that is, the elements of communication and control are incorporated into this learning paradigm. It applies to first-year students of mathematics at the university level in the area of engineering. The results show an improvement in tests applied to students before and after the inclusion of activities with technological applications.

Digital technology is reshaping the way higher education subjects are taught, including design. Various design disciplines use studio teaching as a pedagogy to educate students for professions in art and design. Studio teaching bases a high premium on face-to-face interactions which guide learning through dialogue and feedback on individual work. Many design educators believe it is difficult or even impossible to teach design online because of studio-based interactions. Is design one of those disciplines that cannot be taught online because of the studio culture? This study explores that question by investigating the effectiveness of teaching design subjects that employ a virtual classroom to manage peer-to-peer critiques, instructor feedback, and assignments. Twenty-eight first-year students participated in two online design subjects that required them to interact with fellow students and the design instructor via a Learning Management System. The experienced benefits and challenges of students and instructors are presented, and future research is highlighted.La technologie numérique transforme la façon dont sont enseignées les disciplines de l’éducation postsecondaire, y compris le design. Différentes branches du design se servent de l’enseignement en studio comme pédagogie permettant de former les étudiants pour les métiers des arts et du design. L’enseignement en studio accorde une importance considérable aux interactions en personne qui orientent l’apprentissage par l’entremise du dialogue et de la rétroaction offerte sur le travail individuel. De nombreux enseignants de design croient qu’il est difficile, voire impossible, d’enseigner le design en ligne à cause des interactions en studio. Le design est-il l’une de ces disciplines que l’on ne peut pas enseigner en ligne à cause de la culture des studios? Cette étude explore la question en investiguant l’efficacité de sujets qui étudient le design à l’aide d’une salle de classe virtuelle, qui sert à gérer les critiques entre les pairs, les rétroactions de l’instructeur, ainsi que les travaux à effectuer. Vingt-huit étudiants de première année ont pris part à deux cours de design en ligne qui exigeaient d’eux qu’ils interagissent avec leurs camarades et avec l’instructeur par l’entremise d’un système de gestion de l'apprentissage. Les avantages et les défis dont les étudiants et les instructeurs ont fait l’expérience sont présentés, et des pistes sont proposées pour des études futures.

This study examines the use of three computer programs designed for the study of gross anatomy; An@tomedia Online, AnatomyTV, and Thieme, as in-class learning support programs within the newly adopted “Block model” of teaching delivery at Victoria University. Victoria University is the first and only Australian university to have introduced a block model of education. With the introduction of ‘The Block Teaching Model’ the focus of the use of in-class time towards meaningful and active learning has become paramount. We used these programs as in-class student-centered inquiry based learning activity. The aim of this research was to investigate how the use of these programs impact on student engagement and student experience in their study of gross anatomy which is now offered in a time-compressed block teaching method. An opinion-based survey using the Qualtrics software was conducted at the end of each anatomy unit teaching block of semester 1 in 2019. The survey was distributed to all students enrolled in the unit. Results indicate that all programs used were viewed as making a positive contribution to student learning. The use of An@tomedia Online was particularly helpful in assisting first-year students studying gross anatomy with the interpretation of laboratory-based prosected cadaveric material within the new teaching context.

<p>The article features the role of motivation for higher education. The authors state that learning motivation is one of the decisive factors of educational process efficiency at higher educational institutes, presenting a set of motives that cause students’ activity in the educational process. The knowledge available in the psycho-pedagogical science about the issues of learning motivation is synthesized. The article presents the results of the survey conducted among the first-year students of Kuzbass State Technical University named after T. F. Gorbachev to explore meaningful aspects of their learning motivation. It is noted that a group of material motives, in which students perceive learning as the basis for their future decent material life, and a group of civil motives, in which students perceive learning as preparation for future social life, are their main leaning motives. Cognitive motive, such as a desire for new knowledge, are also revealed in the student survey. A group of prestige motives, such as a desire for a high social status, is also revealed. Most of the students' learning motives are attributed to the group of external motives. The results obtained, according to the authors, are a signal for teachers to search for approaches that are aimed at developing their students' internal motivation. Internal motives of learning can be considered as semantic motives for learning activity. Identified motives are also referred by the authors to a group of conscious motives. The importance of conducting such surveys is emphasized; on the one hand, for students themselves and the process of comprehension of their desires and needs; on the other hand, for planning and development of learning motivation and searching for effective motivationally-oriented approaches to teaching.</p>

Background: After the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, social restriction measures were implemented, among them, the adaptation of university teaching to online modality until the end of the 2019–2020 school year in order to stop the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. At the beginning of the 2020–2021 school year, the Spanish universities opted for face-to-face teaching. To that end, different special measures and adaptations were implemented in higher education facilities, aimed at minimizing the risk of infection and ensuring safe face-to-face learning. The objective was to explore and describe the level of fear of first-year students after the start of in-person classes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The sample was 185 first-year students who were evaluated on the first day of class. For that purpose, an ad-hoc questionnaire was administered to collect demographic information and to find the level of fear and concern. The Fear of COVID-19 Scale was used to assess the severity of the participants’ fear of the pandemic situation. Results: The results indicate that participating university population does not report fear of the virus, but they describe various psychosomatic characteristics, such as increased pulse rate and heart palpitations (p = 0.008) and insomnia (p = 0.05) when they think about infection with coronavirus. Nevertheless, when data are disaggregated by gender, we observe differences specifically in women (83.2%), such as fear (p = 0.006) and sweaty hands when they think of the virus (p = 0.023). Conclusions: Incoming university freshmen do not express concern or fear of potential infection with COVID-19, but they are concerned about family transmission after beginning face-to-face classes.

The article discusses the approaches to understanding antivital experiences, their actualization in first-year students in the process of adaptation to university studies; an empirical study of the effectiveness of socio-psychological training, built taking into account the individual results of the diagnosis of antivital experiences and vitality, is analyzed.


This study aims to determine the predictive factors for effective teaching in blended learning contexts. A Blended Learning Evaluation Scale was devised. The participants were 145 first-year students studying for education degrees using a blended learning model. An exploratory factorial analysis revealed five factors for establishing a good model of blended teaching and learning: student expectations on their learning subjects, the use of web 2.0 tools, feedback from teachers, collaborative work among fellow classmates, and the social relations among students themselves and with their professors.
