This chapter recaps the strategic direction of Internet-based business models over the last decade and points organizations to modify and rethink their business strategies and organization management after the dot.com era. It also reiterates a few implications for an organization’s decision to invest in Web services and looks at the issues involved in managing transitions to Web services. This is followed by a look at Web services as a form of challenge to new organizational arrangement. The chapter concludes with factors to consider when implementing and evaluating a successful Internet strategy.

ABSTRACT Firms are often criticized for their reluctance to embrace sustainability in their business strategies. Frugal innovation is a recent concept that represents a new way for firms to serve underserved customers in developing countries while also promoting sustainability. Based on three cases of frugal innovation at the grassroots level in India, this article demonstrates how frugal innovation presents a promising way to tackle some of today's pressing societal problems with new business models. We use a range of parameters for economic, social, and environmental sustainability to strengthen the case for frugal innovation. This article attempts to inspire scholars to consider frugal innovation further in their future research endeavors and encourage firms to integrate it into their existing business models.

Purpose There is a lack of clarity about what online business models are. The top 20 Google search results on online business models are articles that explain online business models. However, each of them deals with just one or two elements of business strategies. The list of business models is also a mixture of business strategies. This paper aims to provide practical guide that puts these business models into proper perspective. Design/methodology/approach A business model includes all key elements of the business, marketing and operational strategies. There are many such elements. The author has reviewed the popular use of the term online business models and found that just five of the key elements can put almost all of them into proper perspective. Findings Five elements of the business and marketing strategies constitute a practical guide for understanding, discussing and even designing the first working draft of a business plan. Practical implications The practical guide will serve as a robust vehicle for understanding, discussing and even designing the first working draft of a business plan. The current haphazard use of the term online business models does not shed light on online business models. Originality/value The author has examined 20 top Google search results for “online business models” and “business models”. These are articles that talk about 3-17 “business models”. The author examined all of them and confirmed that the five key elements of the business and marketing strategies can put all of them into proper perspective.

The consequence of the increasing development and use of digital technologies, in every segment of society, is the emergence of digital disruption - a powerful external pressure that is changing the way business is done in all industries. Businesses are responding to digital disruption by digital transformation, which involves organizational change, redefining and aligning digital and business strategies, new business models, increased agility of software development and delivery processes, migration and/or integration of legacy systems using cloud-based platforms and ecosystems. In such a context, one of the key responsibilities of a software architect is to maintain the agility of the organization by defending the flexibility of digital strategy and IT resources so that the enterprise is able to transform and respond adequately and rapidly to the effects of digital disruption. In this regard, the question arises as to how digital disruption and business transformation affect the change in the role, importance, competence and agility of a software architect, especially in the context of the development of complex business software systems. This paper aims to present the role of an agile software architect in the era of digital disruption and transformation, by integrating the results of theoretical and empirical research. A systematic literature review identifies the role, importance, and competencies of a software architect in implementing agile architecture. In other hand, empirical research, based on a case study in a large enterprise, provides a better understanding of the importance of software architect for aligning business and digital strategy, as well as its contribution to increasing the agility of the process of developing, delivering and integrating complex business software systems.

The development of Ukrainian trade organizations in ordinary conditions is characterized by a high degree of inertia. Therefore, when situations that need to change arise, business strategies of market participants also change dramatically. Most often, such transformations are connected with external factors, such as the overall economic crisis, a sharp change in the state “rules of the game” in a particular sector of economic relations, as well as another external factor bond to the occurrence of new serious competitors. The development of organizational and economic mechanism to ensure the innovative development of retail trade, requires comprehensive consideration of internal and external factors of the studied system, the formation of strategies and programs to increase the innovation potential of its participants, their active interaction, increasing the use of innovative technologies, generating ideas and transformations. The article considers the issues related to the impact of business globalization processes on the transformation of business models of trade organizations and their operation strategy, as the degree of trade development indicates the standard of living and the state of the economy and society. The authors of the article suggest that retail organizations adapt to the changes in the macro and micro environment, using innovative components in economic and financial activities, which will ensure their competitiveness and prevent crises. The proposed model of an innovative trade organization allows to identify the goals components of innovation activities, which combine the strategic guidelines of the state regulation and help to improve the economic condition of trade organizations

Purpose – This paper aims to provide a foundation for firms trying to evaluate the suitability of Internet of Things (IoT)-enhanced offerings against the background of their current portfolio. Currently, quite a number of companies consider revising or extending their portfolio of products and services by incorporating IoT components to achieve competitive advantages. However, an unsystematic and autotelic addition of connected sensors and actuators to present offerings does not necessarily lead to substantial market success. Design/methodology/approach – The approach of this paper is to identify different roles which IoT components can play in offering portfolios; clarify business development objectives, which can be achieved by the combination of products and services with IoT components; and report case examples which help to highlight how business development objectives can be reached with the help of IoT components fulfilling specific roles. Findings – IoT components may play three different roles when integrated into product or service offerings. This role differentiation is crucial in understanding how IoT amendments can be instrumental in supporting the achievement of specific business development objectives pursued by a firm. Research limitations/implications – The framework is based on conceptual considerations. To overcome this limitation, empirical research on technology-, cost- and customer-related impacts of IoT-enhanced offerings is desirable. Practical/implications – Firms need to evaluate three roles which IoT components can play against the background of their present product portfolio when developing new business strategies. Originality/value – This paper combines literature on the principles of operation of IoT applications and business models with current use-cases to provide implications for IoT-related business development issues.

The Internet has come a long way over the past twenty years, and many Internet-era enterprises have had to face daunting challenges while trying to create innovative business models. Many types of Internet interactions can facilitate networking (e.g., The Web, Web services). Since the advent of the Internet, service requesters and service providers have generated diverse electronic services (e-services), and since 2003, many experts have proposed the concept of Web 2.0. People rely on Internet e-services to execute activities and meet requirements; however, e-services lack a standardization method for constructing and managing them. The current study presents a framework design and a comprehensive interface for e-service providers and requesters. The study adopts the concept of Web 2.0 by using Web services with related standards for developing the framework design. Specifically, the study uses semantic Web technologies to complete the construction of e-services. After that, Internet users can quickly and conveniently access the framework to obtain suitable e-services.

This chapter considers the lack of knowledge by both non-profit and for-profit organizations in building business models and developing global managerial strategies; as well as, considers the need for organizations to understand open transformation of organizational structure with an autonomous mindset of each stakeholder and unification of the organizational system. The focus of perspectives points to what is needed to understand behavior stemming from the culture of the organization and what it takes to structure or restructure its culture to fit with the 21st century's demands and growing global perspectives. Explanations are given as to how some theories and disciplines need to band together to bring out deeper meanings of phenomena to address managerial and leadership strategies. There are six figures and one table highlighting developmental processes of successful organizational systems. These will be used as roadmaps in developing on-going constructs to navigate assessments, training, and transformation processes of an organization.

Evidence shows that sustainability not only helps a business case getting stronger, but also embraces a sustainability agenda which can stimulate innovation, pushing companies to rethink their operations, products and business models. In addition, during the past few years the demand for organic wine has increased and many Greek businesses have entered the market, advertising the superiority of organic wine. The main objective of this study is to portray the need for an implementation of new technologies in the distribution and supply of organic wine in the city of Xanthi. Furthermore, the investigation of consumers' attitude will constitute the basis for further development of business strategies regarding sustainability and innovation in the agri-food chain. From the quantitative and qualitative data, the statistical analysis will provide findings on consumer behavior, attitudes, new trends, and factors that affect the choice of organic wine. Finally, the current paper is indicative of the general consumer stance towards organic-products.

At the present time and with the economic orientation towards maturity, enterprises unlike the traditional competitive business strategies are wanted out of necessity to cooperate with other enterprises and to add new activities to their existing profiles. The rapid growth of technologies motivates enterprises to invest more and more in this domain with the adoption of the cooperative e-business applications. Consequently, we propose in this paper an approach that permits enterprises to enhance their cooperative activities. This approach is based on the agent and Web services paradigms. It is organized in the form of cooperative application groups representing the different parts of a company. Agent coordinators orchestrate the cooperative work of these groups. The most requested functionalities inside the enterprise and those offered to the external world can be exported as Web Services. We describe the Web Services with DAML-based Web Service ontology (OWL-S). The search, invocation and exploration of these Web services can be offered by an intermediate agent called Web Service Finder Agent. The proposed approach provides a new vision of the cooperation context where the companies and their partners share knowledge and offer functionalities as agents and Web Services.

A new business—insurance on business Web services—is proposed. As more and more Web services will be developed to fulfill the ever increasing needs of e-Business, the e-marketplace for Web services will soon be established. However, the qualities of these business Web services are unknown without real experiences and users can hardly make decisions on service selection. We propose that insurance can help build trust in the market of Web services. In this chapter, we propose three insurance models for business Web services and enabling technologies, including quality description, reputation scheme, transaction analysis, etc. We believe that the insurance of business Web services will help service competition and hence boost the development of more and more business Web services, and the software industry at large.
