In 2020, the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) triggered a global health crisis, disrupting economies, societies, and private companies. Organizations faced urgent challenges, and most of them installed so called “task forces” to respond. Small or medium enterprises (SMEs), which play a major role in most economies, however, often encounter problems of limited resources to do so. The purpose of this chapter is to derive theoretical and practical implications on how such crises can be handled. A literature review identifies the characteristics of successful task forces and then validates them with a case study of a Swiss transport company during COVID-19, which is based on multiple interviews with the CEO between Spring 2020 and in Fall 2020. The findings include that task forces are crucial for SMEs despite their limited resources. A critical success factor is the quality of human resources, which demands careful selection. Concepts used in crisis management can also be applied in day-to-day operations to increase the organization's resilience and also general profitability.

Innovation plays a major role and is a crucial component of the organization’s growth. Creativity and innovation have become increasingly popular as key contributors to firm success in the last few decades or so. The incoming technology of Industrial Revolution 4.0 forced many companies to be innovative to compete in technological era. However, many SMEs are not ready and less innovative. Furthermore, there is lack of research focus on HPWS implementation amongst SMEs indicates that further research must be conducted along these lines. Therefore, this study aim to investigate the effect of high performance work system (HPWS) towards innovative work behaviour of employees in small and medium enterprises. This study used quantitative approach to identify the critical success factor of high performance work systems (HPWS) in Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SME) manufacturing industry. This study used descriptive analysis to analyze the data. Five-point Likert scales items ranging from (1-strongly disagree, 5 – strongly agree) employed for measuring the HPWS. Therefore, the total of 81 items survey questions were adapted to obtain the respondents for SME manufacturing industry. Reliability analysis shows that all the HPWS dimensions have very good reliability with Cronbach’s alpha value range from 0.884 to 0.976. According to Tang et al (2014), Cronbach’s alpha range between 0.70 and 0.80 considered as good reliability whereby 0.80 and 0.90 considered as very good reliability. Result also showed that selective staffing has the highest mean score followed by employee participation, which are 3.951 and 3.833 respectively. This proved that selective staffing is most important critical success factor in the HPWS implementation for Malaysian SME manufacturing industry. Keywords: high performance work system, work engagement, innovative work behaviour, small and medium enterprise.

Cloud Computing has become the predominant paradigm in information technology for the use of distributed resources. It enables the Internet of Services where different provider offer services and compose services to new value added services. For the emerging service value chains the quality the services plays an important role. Therefore, beside software engineering methods aspects like quality of services, business models, and the interaction with the customer have to be considered during the development of cloud services. This chapter describes how these aspects can be integrated in the development process by combining software and service engineering methods and considering quality as a critical success factor in the design time.

Open online sourcing is a new outsourcing model. With the development of the information economy, more and more enterprises begin to adopt the open online sourcing. It has great social and commercial value to establish an effective open online outsourcing marketplace, and the critical success factor of the operation is to establish the trust mechanism in this online marketplace. Thus, we construct a trust mechanism model in the open online outsourcing marketplace based on the Theory of Rational Action, and the four dimensions of the trust are identified in the model, they are trust intention, trading mechanism trust, trading process trust and quality of the online platform. This model can provide theoretical guidance in the operation of the open online sourcing marketplace.

Due to the pertinent question of development of micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and self food supply over the world and especially in Africa, this paper intends to analyze the key characteristics of the Congolese MSMEs, the identification of the perceived critical success factors and their prioritization for accurate and well-oriented performance action. To respond to the focus issues of this paper, an investigation on 259 enterprises was made in Kinshasa and the critical success factor methodology was used to cease and categorize all perceived factors from entrepreneurs. From this, 45 identified CSFs emerged throughout the operational channel of MSMEs and where categorized into four groups which are externalities, strategy, finance and organization. The Analytical Hierarchy Process is used to prioritize these CSFs per operational channel sections which are supply chain, production and distribution. And findings show that the most critical path is the supply chain while the highest critical axis is the finance area followed respectively by strategy, externalities and organization axes.

Competition in the labor market will increase towards the implementation of the ASEAN free market by the end of 2015. Thus therefore, improving the quality of human resources is a critical success factor of development and progress of a nation. In contrast, the labor of Indonesia also has a significant opportunity to fill the jobs. It is considering that the population of Indonesia, which reached number 4 in the world. The expansion of the labor market will be able to reduce unemployment and improve the welfare of the community, which is one of the goals of the establishment of the ASEAN economic community if Indonesian workers can compete with foreign labor. The low competitiveness is caused by to the low level of workforce education. To improve the competitiveness of the labor could be conducted by improving education that embodies the hard and soft competencies. The existence of soft skills and hard skills must be balanced, because these skills support each other to achieve a person’s success. To create the both skills then the education sector should be able to develop a balanced curriculum to realize soft skills and hard skills of labor.

Introduction: The current corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a serious global health crisis that has affected large parts of the public and private life worldwide, including the use of psychoactive substances. In this study, we investigated the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of serotonergic psychedelics, i.e., the settings in which people use psychedelics, the motives of usage, and the subjective quality of psychedelic experiences. Methods: The study was part of an international, cross-sectional, internet-based survey (N = 5,049) available in five languages (English, German, Spanish, Italian, and Korean) carried out during the early phase of the pandemic from April to August 2020. Participants were asked to retrospectively rate settings and motives of psychedelic substance use before the pandemic and in the last 4 weeks during the pandemic, as well as changes in psychedelic experiences. Results: Of n = 1,375 participants that reported the use psychedelics in 2019 or 2020, n = 642 (46.6%) also took psychedelics during the pandemic. During the pandemic, participants used psychedelics significantly less often in settings that were outside their home. Top motives to use psychedelics were comparable before and during the pandemic, but participants consumed less out of curiosity, to celebrate, or because friends took it, and more out of boredom. An increase in positively connoted, often pro-social experiences was observed. Two thirds of participants who used psychedelics during the pandemic claimed that psychedelics had helped them to deal better with the corona pandemic at least slightly.Discussion: Changes in setting and motives were mostly in line with restrictions caused by control measures to contain the spread of the virus. The unexpected increase in positively connoted experiences possibly reflects a favorable interaction of environmental macro- and individual micro-contexts during the pandemic (e.g., by reducing the use in more uncontrolled recreational settings or by encouraging a strong self-selection of substance users due to the expectation of “bad trips”). Increased pro-social feelings under psychedelics might reflect a desire for social interactions in times of social distancing and pandemic-related stress and anxiety.
