As the global human population increases, the demand for food grows and, consequently, practices such as aquaculture have become more common. Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier, 1818) is a native Amazonian species, considered to be the second most cultivated fish in the country. We compared the development of post-larval C. macropomum of different ages, submitted to combinations of food management on a commercial production scale. Two experiments tested the delivery of i) 55% crude protein feeding, ii) natural feeding by fertilizing the water and iii) a combination of both during hatchery in concrete tanks (10 m 2) or excavated soil-bottom tanks (4502) subjected to distinct fertilization protocols and storage densities. The weight and length of the post-larvae grown in ponds were greater (p < 2.0x10-16) for the mixed treatment, except during the first week of larvae, in which values were similar (p ≤ 1.76x10-14) to the fertilization treatment. Concrete tanks with fertilization management without feeding were similar to the mixed treatment (p ≤ 1.38x10-7); however, during the first week of external larvae production, the growth performance under fertilization treatment was superior to the others. Food management in excavated tanks, when compared to the same management performed in concrete tanks, registered higher averages for the productive variables of C. macropomum cultivated at the density of 200 post-larvae m-2 in all evaluated food strategies. It was verified that post-larvae of C. macropomum did not develop well in the first weeks of life when receiving only formulated diets. The increase in natural food availability through fertilization positively influenced the performance of the species, which can remain without feeding until the second week of life.

Bio-preservatives are widely used in agriculture for silage production. A large variety of preparations makes it difficult to select an effective preservative of high quality. Silage nutritional value and quality directly affect animal farming. Therefore, the more factors of forage production are considered the higher livestock productivity and health level. This article reports on preservative efficacy determined by acid composition and nutritional value. The obtained data demonstrated an indirect impact of bio-preservatives on milk productivity. The investigation took place at the SPK “Kobralovskiy” in the Leningrad region in 2019. Silage was composed of gramineous and legumes. Wilted green mass was thoroughly rammed and covered subsequently. Preparations were applied by a dosing complex of a harvesting machine according to manufacturer instructions. Liquid and dried preparations were used. Silage samples were tested 30–35 days post fermentation. Silage prepared by “Biotrof 2+” exceeded two foreign preservatives by 24.3 and 31.6% in crude protein. Feeding cows with “Biotrof 2+” silage increased the average daily yield of 4% milk by 5.1 and 8.4% compared to the preservatives made in England and Sweden, respectively.

The present study was aimed at evaluating the reproductive performance of the broodstock of purple mangrove crab (Scylla tranquebarica) fed natural food and formulated diets supplemented with astaxanthin and/or DHA. Formulated diets were supplemented with 500 mg kg-1 of astaxanthin (FA), 10 g kg-1 of DHA (FD) and both astaxanthin and DHA (FA+D). Diet without astaxanthin and DHA (FCon) and natural food (NF) consisted of forage fish (Valamugil sp.), shrimp (Penaeid sp.) and mangrove clam (Polymesoda sp.) to serve as control. Female broodstock of initial body weight 129.07±17.03 g were stocked in HDPE tank and cultured under recirculating water system. Broodstock maturation was monitored until spawning. Reproductive performance of female and condition of the larvae were also evaluated. After 50 weeks, broodstock fed FA+D diet showed better maturation percentage, spawning rate, gonadosomatic index, oocytes diameter, molting, molt death syndrome and survival rate than FCon group (P0.05) to the FA+D group but diet FD resulted in better performance than FA. Broodstock fed FA+D diet had the highest hatching rate, number of larvae produced and significantly higher zoea II survival compared to FCon and NF groups (P

Cereal and pasture hays, cut at the same site, were packaged into medium-sized round bales, large round bales and stacks. Halfthe number of each hay type and of each hay package were stored in the open for up to 15 months in a 500 mm rainfall area and half were transported to and stored for up to 15 months in a 1000 mm rainfall area. Densities of the pasture hay packages were within the manufacturers' specified ranges but those of the cereal hay packages were lower. Medium-sized round bales were less dense than large round bales and weathered more than large round bales and stacks after 10 and 15 months storage. Cereal hay packages deteriorated more than pasture hay packages with long-term storage. Medium-sized round bales lost more dry matter than large round bales after storage over the winter and more digestible dry matter over this period and after long-term storage. They also lost more crude protein than large round bales when stored over the first summer and over the following winter. It was economic to store all packages in the open over the first summer. It was uneconomic to store medium-sized round bales in the open over the following winter, while storage of large round bales and stacks was economic. For long-term storage, it was uneconomic to store any of the hay packages in the open, and storage under cover would have to be considered.

Enhancing the vitamin content of meat and eggs provides an opportunity to increase the levels of key nutrients-especially those deemed to be at marginal or insufficient levels-in the human diet for optimal health and well-being. In general, enhancement efforts have focussed on developing feeding strategies to achieve optimal vitamin levels in meat and eggs. The definition of an optimal strategy is influenced by factors such as: (1) the efficiency of vitamin transfer into the final product, (2) the impact on animal performance or health, (3) the impact on the quality characteristics of the final product and (4) economic considerations. Vitamins are an extremely diverse class of nutrients in terms of their chemical and physical properties. Each vitamin differs with respect to stability during processing, susceptibility to bioconversion within the intestinal tract, digestibility, transport and storage in tissues. It follows that the development of vitamin-enriched meat and eggs will be highly dependent on the interaction of multiple factors. Ultimately, the success of such strategies must be judged against the contributions that the enriched products make to the human diet in terms of vitamin intake and consumer acceptance of the products. Key words: Meat, eggs, vitamin enhancement, bioavailability, dietary reference intakes

We examined whether the forage abundance hypothesis or the selective quality hypothesis could explain the feeding strategies of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge in Haywood County and the Ames Plantation in Fayette and Hardeman counties, Tennessee (from autumn 1983 to summer 1986). The botanical composition of the diets on Ames was characterized by agricultural crops, browse, and acorns in autumn and winter, and browse, forbs, and agricultural crops in spring and summer. Acorns were common in autumn and winter diets on Hatchie, as were browse and agricultural crops. Spring and summer diets were high in browse and forbs and, to a lesser extent, agricultural crops. Diets were lower in crude fat, crude protein, and fiber in spring and higher in most nutritional parameters in autumn and winter at both sites. Neither the nutritional value nor the abundance of forages had a strong impact on diet in any of the seasons and years of the study as predicted by the forage abundance hypothesis. Spearman's correlation coefficients of forage consumption and abundance in spring and summer were positive and much higher than in autumn and winter at both sites. Deer are apparently less selective during seasons of lower dietary fiber and higher forage abundance. Our data support the selective quality hypothesis as a more appropriate model of feeding strategies for white-tailed deer.

<p>This research was conducted to determine natural food substitution time by artificial diet   after salinity acclimatization from 20 ppt until 2 ppt, which can increase survival and growth of (<em>Litopenaeus vannamei</em>) postlarvae during rearing period. Design experiment was completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications of natural food <em>Chironomus</em> sp.  (60% of crude protein) substitution time by artificial diet (40% of crude protein) at day: 1 (A), 7 (B), 14 (C), 21 (D) and full natural food without artificial diet (E) during 28 days rearing period. White shrimp postlarvae and rearing media in this experiment based from best result of earlier research that is PL25 from acclimatization in media 2 ppt with addition of potassium 25 ppm to freshwater media.  The densities of PL25 white shrimp were 20 PLs/50 liters of 2 ppt media. The result of this experiment showed that the use of artificial diet as soon as after salinity acclimatization (PL25) gave best performance production compared to which only that was given natural food <em>Chironomus</em> sp. during experiment or with treatment by artificial diet substitution at day-7, day-14 or day-21, shown with the highest value of food consumption level, protein retention, energy retention, daily growth rate and food efficiency. Survival rate of PL54 was above 80% and not significant different between treatment. That is supported by chemical-physical value of water quality still in range appropriate to survival rate of white shrimp post larvae during a rearing period. The result of this experiment indicated that requirement nutrient of PL25 in low salinity did not fulfilled if only rely on natural food, so that require artificial diet with nutrition content to support growth and survival rate of white shrimp post larvae more maximal.</p> <p>Key words: salinity, natural food, artificial diet, Pacific white shrimp</p> <p> </p> <p>ABSTRAK</p> <p>Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan waktu penggantian pakan alami oleh pakan buatan yang tepat selama masa pemeliharaan postlarva udang vaname di media bersalinitas rendah setelah melalui masa aklimatisasi penurunan salinitas dari 20 ppt hingga 2 ppt, sehingga dapat meningkatkan pertumbuhan dan kelangsungan hidup.

An experiment was conducted to find out the effect of oat meal as a source of dietary fiber to formulate enriched broiler nugget. For this purpose, nuggets were prepared into four different groups such as treatment 1: 10% wheat flour nugget, treatment 2: 20% wheat flour nugget, treatment 3:10% oat meal nugget and treatment 4: 20% Oat meal nugget. All parameters were analyzed at 0, 15th and 30th days of storage period. The proximate composition of different nuggets batter was analyzed and highly significant differences were found in dry matter (%) and pH. Dry matter was lower, while pH was higher in control nugget (Treatment 1). Significant differences were found in crude protein (%), ether extract (%) among different nuggets, as well as among different storage time. Significantly higher DM (%), Ash (%) and EE (%) was found in broiler meat with 20% oat meal, while higher crude protein (%) were found in broiler meat+10% wheat flour. Crude protein (%) and DM (%) increased, while Ash (%) and EE (%) decreased with increase of storage time.  The storage period had significant effect on different biochemical (FFA, POV and TBARS value) and microbial (TVC, TCC and TYMC) tests. In all cases, the values were increased with increase of storage time. The surface color (CIE L*, a*, b*) of nuggets of different treatments at different storage period were measured.  No significant differences in b* value were found among broiler meat nuggets and storage time. On the other hand, different types of nuggets and storage period had a significant effect on L* and a* value. Significantly higher a* value was found in broiler meat with 10% wheat flour (T1). In sensory analysis, no significant differences were found in flavor, off-flavor, juiciness, tenderness and overall acceptability among four types of sausages. It could be concluded that addition of oat meal as a source of dietary fiber did not differ the overall acceptability of broiler meat nuggets compare to broiler meat nuggets with wheat flour. Bang. The experiment aimed to assess the effect of dietary inclusion of meals derived from Black soldier fly (BSF) larvae on the meat quality in broilers. The birds were divided into three groups according to the formulated diets: control (CON)– receiving standard diet, Т1 – receiving 5% partially defatted and Т2 – receiving 5% full fat BSF meal during the finishing period (14–35 d). At the age of 35 days, 10 broilers from each group were slaughtered for meat quality evaluation. The dietary inclusion of the BSF meals was associated with decrease of pH and lighter colour of the meat. The total amount of the saturated fatty acids (SFA) and atherogenic index (AI) were increased, while polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), the ratios between PUFA and SFA (P/S), n-6/n-3 PUFA and hypo/hypercholesterolemic fatty acids (h/H) were decreased in the meat of the broilers consuming insect meals. The results of the study suggest good prospective for further research with the examined BSF meals for broiler nutrition to formulate feeding strategies that will not alter negatively meat quality and its healthy value.

Effects of method of drying beef and buffalo meat and storage time on quality were investigated. Six treatments were applied: drying beef with salt (B1), drying beef without salt (B2), drying beef with salt and spices (B3), drying buffalo meat with salt (B4), without salt (B5) and with salt and spices (B6). Taste and smell of all samples were acceptable up to 120 days of storage. The dry matter (DM), protein, ether extract (EE) and ash content decreased with storage time. The initial DM, crude protein (CP), EE and ash content of the samples were 92.1-95.2%, 77.0-78.6%, 5.0-6.5%, 8.0-12.8%, respectively. After 120 days of storage DM, CP, EE and ash content of the samples ranged from 87.8-89.1%, 72.9-74.0%, 5.0-5.9%, 7.4-9.7%, respectively. CP and EE percentage in beef was higher than buffalo meat, but beef contained less DM and ash. At the end of storage beef dried with salt contained highest protein (74.0%) and buffalo meat dried without salt contained lowest protein (73.0%). There was a significant (p<0.05 to 0.01) effect of drying method, salt and spices in beef and buffalo meat. With the elapse of storage time quality of meat degraded significantly (p<0.05 to 0.01). The degradation was lower in beef dried with salt than in beef dried without salt beef or beef dried with salt and spices, and buffalo meat. It is suggested that salt drying may be a useful method of meat preservation. DOI: 10.3329/bvet.v26i1.4629 Bangl. vet. 2009. Vol. 26, No. 1, 31-38
