Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a systemic chronic autoimmune disease. To study the therapeutic mechanism of effects of Skullcap Brightviolet (SB),glucosamine/chondroitin (GC),and the combination of them (named Arthrigia) on RA. With the adjuvant arthritis (AA) rat models, we observed the protective effects of oral SB, GC and Arthrigia in different concentrations on AA in rats. We further examined the immunological mechanism of the combination of them by testing the rats’ secretion of IL-12. The results showed that Arthrigia inhibited the production and secretion of IL-12 factors in some extent, and its effects are more potent the single SB or GC. The present study provides the experimental evidences for Arthrigia for its further development, clinical prevention and treatment of RA.

: Diet plays a significant role in ensuring healthy life and the bioactive compounds present in food and medicinal plants may be developed as drugs that combat various illnesses. A bioactive flavanoid, quercetin which is a dietary component possesses numerous health-promoting effects. In preclinical models of rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis and osteoarthritis, quercetin has shown significant joint protective effects. Taking into account the significance of this compound, the present review discusses its anti-arthritic properties, demonstrating its mechanism of action for the treatment of arthritis with its therapeutic potential.

Objective: Decompression sickness (DCS) causes serious brain hypoxic-ischemic injury. This experiment was designed to observe whether hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) pretreatment played a neuroprotective effect in decompression sickness rat models and to explore the mechanism of protective effects. Methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats were pretreated with HBO2 and then underwent decompression to establish the DCS rat model. Antioxidant capacities were evaluated by detecting peroxides (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in brains. The levels of metal elements manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg) in brain tissues were assessed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Necrosis and apoptosis of neurons were assessed by H-E staining and immunohistochemical staining. Results: HBO2 pretreatment reduced the degree of necrosis and apoptosis in brain tissues of decompression sickness rat models. In addition, HBO2 pretreatment increased GPx, SOD and CAT activities and reduced MDA accumulation. It also increased the content of Mn, Zn, Fe and Mg in brain tissue, which are all related to free radical metabolism. Conclusion: These results suggested that HBO2 pretreatment has protective effects on brain injury of rats with decompression sickness. The mechanism of the protective effects may be related to reducing oxidative damage by affecting metal elements in vivo.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes tissue damage, deformity, and death if not treated immediately. The aim of this study  to description of RA patients in the Regional General Hospital (RSUD) Arifin Achmad Riau Province 2015 – 2019. The results showed that total cases was 55 cases with the more common in female (87,3%) with most age group was 46-55 years (34,5%) and the main complaints were joint pain (85,5%). Rheumatoid arthritis patients with laboratory examinations were non-reactive rheumatoid factor (RF) levels by 20 patients out of 30 patients, levels of Anti-Citrullinated Protei  Antibodies (ACPA) or Immunoglobulin G anti-Cyclic Citrulinated Protein (IgG anti-CCP) reactive by 3 patients out of 4 patients, levels C-Reactive Protein (CRP) abnormal by 18 patients out of 21 patients and levels Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) abnormal by 20 patients out of 23 patients. The results also showed that the most pharmacological therapy given was corticosteroid (87,3%)

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic and chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease characterized by severe synovial hyperplasia associated with progressive cartilage degradation. Due to the severe pain and disability caused by RA, effective therapeutic strategies that could simultaneously alleviate the inflammatory response and delay the disease progression are urgently needed. As a major alternative therapy in traditional Chinese medicine, moxibustion has been demonstrated that it could reduce the chronic inflammatory responses of a series of musculoskeletal diseases; however, whether moxibustion has protective effects on RA is still unclear. To investigate the effects of moxibustion on RA, moxibustion was applied to Zusanli (ST36) and Shenshu (BL23) acupoints in a RA rabbit model. HE staining of articular cartilage showed that moxibustion alleviated the cartilage degradation and bone destruction. In addition, moxibustion decreased the osteoclast number in RA rabbits. Real-time PCR revealed that moxibustion decreased the expression of RANKL mRNA while increased the expression of OPG mRNA, indicating a restoration of the balance between osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis. Taken together, our results indicated that moxibustion had promising antiarthritic effects and could be an useful alternative method in RA therapeutics.

Aims. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of Er Miao San (EMS) and the regulative function of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) on adjuvant arthritis (AA) in rats. Methods. The ethyl acetate part of EMS (3 g/kg, 1.5 g/kg, and 0.75 g/kg) was orally administered from day 15 after immunization to day 29. The polyarthritis index and paw swelling were measured, the ankle joint pathological changes were observed using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and the spleen and thymus index were determined. Moreover, T and B cell proliferation were determined using the CCK-8 assay. The expression of BMDC surface costimulatory molecules and inflammatory factors were determined using flow cytometry and ELISA kits, respectively. Results. Compared with the AA model rats, the ethyl acetate fraction of EMS obviously reduced paw swelling (from 1.0 to 0.7) and the polyarthritis index (from 12 to 9) P < 0.01 and improved the severity of histopathology P < 0.01 . The treatment using ethyl acetate fraction of EMS significantly reduced the spleen and thymus index P < 0.01 and inhibited T and B cell proliferation P < 0.01 . Moreover, EMS significantly modulated the expression of surface costimulatory molecules in BMDCs, including CD40, CD80, CD86, and major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) P < 0.01 . The results also showed that the ethyl acetate part of EMS significant inhibited the levels of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin- (IL-) 23 tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) α and inflammatory factor prostaglandin (PG) E2 in the supernatant of BMDCs. However, the level of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was significantly increased P < 0.01 . Conclusion. These results suggest that the ethyl acetate part of EMS has better protective effects on AA rats, probably by regulating the function of BMDCs and modulating the balance of cytokines.
