Method to Determine Pedestrians Level of Service for Unsignalized Intersections

This paper aims at developing a Level of Service (LOS) model for unsignalized intersection crosswalks for pedestrians from the perspective of the pedestrian’s perception of comfort and safety in unsignalized intersection environment. Firstly, the potential primary factors influencing pedestrian LOS at crosswalk were summarized from three respects: traffic conflicts, crossing facilities and delay. Secondly, data for the model were collected, including 459 participants’ real-time sense of comfort and safety when they crossing the 11 selected intersection crosswalks and the design and operational characteristics of the selected intersections. The selected crosswalks were typical of those prevalent in the urban areas of China, and the participants of questionnaire survey covered a broad cross section of Chinese population of pedestrians. Based on the survey data, Pearson Correlation analysis and step-wise regression analysis were carried out to develop pedestrian LOS model for unsignalized intersections. A reliable, statistically calibrated pedestrian LOS model for unsignalized intersections was developed, suitable for application in the vast majority of Chinese urban areas. The study revealed that the factors significantly influencing pedestrian LOS at unsignalized intersections included: left turning bicycles from side streets, through bicycles from side streets, right turning bicycles from side streets, left turning bicycles approaching from the street parallel to the crosswalk, through bicycles from the approach opposite to the crosswalk, right turning bicycles from the street parallel to the crosswalk, through bicycles from the approach opposite to the crosswalk and the presence of the median.

This paper aims at developing a pedestrian level of service (LOS) model for the overall unsignalized midblock crossings of road segments from the perspective of the pedestrian's perception of safety and convenience in Chinese midblock crossing environment. Firstly, the potential primary factors influencing pedestrian LOS at unsignalized midblock crosswalks were summarized from four respects: traffic conflicts, the distance between crosswalks, crossing facilities, and delay. Secondly, 948 participants’ real-time sense of safety and convenience when they were crossing the 30 selected unsignalized midblock crosswalks and the design and operational characteristics of the selected road segments were collected. The selected midblock crosswalks were typical of those prevalent in the medium-sized urban areas of China, and the participants of questionnaire survey covered a broad cross section of Chinese population of pedestrians. Finally, Pearson correlation analysis and stepwise regression analysis were carried out to develop pedestrian LOS model for the overall unsignalized midblock crossings of road segments. The results revealed that the factors significantly influencing pedestrian LOS of the overall unsignalized midblock crossings of road segments included volume of two-way motor vehicle, the distance between marked midblock crosswalks, and the distance between unmarked crosswalks. A reliable, statistically calibrated pedestrian LOS model was developed ( R2 = 0.80).

In the present context of international public finance crisis, the analysis of government sustainability is considered of vital importance, and a significant element in this is the accounting measurement of intergenerational equity. The aim of this paper is to identify factors that may influence the financial sustainability of local government, doing so through the analysis of 116 local administrations in Spain. Based on Pearson correlation analysis, our main findings show that the annual budget result is a key determinant of local government financial sustainability, and highlight the value of controlling the balance of budget expenditures in preventing future problems of viability for these local authority services.

A good urban structure and activity need a green spaces to increase its ecological function. However, trees will not fully be able to fill an important space in urban areas while the shrub woody vegetation has the potential to fill that space. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the  potential of shrub as a constituent of urban vegetation so it can be used as material information about the planning of land use in the district of Cempaka. This sudy was conducted by determining the three sampling stations and 3 plots of 4m x 4m in wide on each station with data based on a map of shrub green space in District of Cempaka using purposive sampling method, the analysis performed includes the analysis of shrub canopy, measured environmental parameters, and data were analyzed with analysis of canopy volume, Pearson correlation analysis and analysis of Importance Value Index (IVI). Shrub vegetation estimation results indicate that the shrub canopy volume in the district of Cempaka is up to 22,462,878.50 m3 in the bush land area of 5675.116 hectares. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the shrub canopy volume in the district Cempaka effect on changes in environmental factors. Besides the most dominant species is Ficus fistulosa Reinw. ex Bl with IVI of 56.1%. Based on the results obtained can be concluded that the shrub has potential as a constituent of vegetation in urban green space.

One of the social problems that often arise in urban areas is a waste problem. Waste problem is basically caused by many things, such as the lack of good waste management, the behavior of a society that is still low in maintaining hygiene and environmental health, as well as the growing population, thus adding of waste produced by households. Waste management in the region, will involve communities, government, NGOs and the private sector. But in Trenggalek, the absence of private parties who participated in addressing rural waste. Waste management in Trenggalek handled by the government and the people who lead the waste pelayananaan less than optimal or not in accordance with existing regulations. The aim of this study was to assess the extent to which institutional role in waste management in Trenggalek, in creating a healthy environment, berhindar of soil and water pollution caused by garbage. The analysis in this study was performed using Pearson correlation analysis, crosstab analysis and scale analysis. Results from this study were 1) Waste in Trenggalek differentiate into 2 (two), namely organic and inorganic waste, the most dominant is the leaf litter and food waste amounted to 81.30%. 2) Institute for waste management there are only two (2) institutions, namely the government and society. 3) Waste management in Trenggalek done by way of being transported by a janitor, burned and dumped into the river. 4) The role of each institution shows that government plays an important role in waste management in Trenggalek. 5) Based on the analysis of the correlation between institutional waste management indicates that the government has a weak relationship with the community, so that waste management is less than optimal.

This paper documents a study performed to develop a level-of-service (LOS) model that accurately represents pedestrians’ perceptions of crossings at signalized intersections. This model incorporates perceived safety and comfort (i.e., perceived exposure and conflicts) and operations (i.e., delay and signalization). Data for the model were obtained from an innovative Walk for Science field data collection event and video simulations. The data consist of ( a) participants’ perceptions of safety, comfort, and operations as they walk through selected signalized intersections and ( b) the design and operational characteristics of these intersections. The resulting model provides a measure of the pedestrian's perspective on how well an intersection's geometric and operational characteristics meets his or her needs. The pedestrian LOS model for intersections described in this paper is based on Pearson correlation analyses and stepwise regression modeling of approximately 800 combined real-time perceptions (observations) from pedestrians walking a course through signalized intersections in a typical U.S. metropolitan area. The resulting general model for the pedestrian LOS at intersections is highly reliable, has a high correlation coefficient ( R2 = .73) with the average observations, and is transferable to the majority of metropolitan areas in the United States. Primary factors in the pedestrian LOS model for intersections include right-turn-on-red volumes for the street being crossed, permissive left turns from the street parallel to the crosswalk motor vehicle volume on the street being crossed, midblock 85th percentile speed of the vehicles on the street being crossed, number of lanes being crossed, pedestrian's delay, and presence or absence of right-turn channelization islands.

In port areas, traffic is characterized by container trucks which run on diesel, while in urban areas it is characterized by private cars which run on petrol. The different fuels as pollution sources cause distinct particle pollution. This study offers an in-depth investigation of particle pollution and corresponding short-term exposures in port and urban areas. Field measurements were carried out to collect the data including particulate matter and traffic volume. Based on the data, firstly, the Pearson correlation analysis was performed to analyze the relationships between traffic volume and particles. Secondly, the Anderson–Darling test was adopted to identify the “best-fit” distributions on particles. Thirdly, comparisons of particle pollution levels in port and urban areas were analyzed. Finally, the pedestrian respiratory deposition doses of particles were estimated. The results indicate the importance and urgency of reducing air pollution, especially for port cities, and provide policymakers with a foundation for possible measures in the port city.

Abstract Background Our objective was to obtain normal patellofemoral measurements to analyse sex and individual differences. In addition, the absolute values and indices of tibial tuberosity-trochlear groove (TT-TG) distances are still controversial in clinical application. A better method to enable precise prediction is still needed. Methods Seventy-eight knees of 78 participants without knee pathologies were included in this cross-sectional study. A CT scan was conducted for all participants and three-dimensional knee models were constructed using Mimics and SolidWorks software. We measured and analysed 19 parameters including the TT-TG distance and dimensions and shapes of the patella, femur, tibia, and trochlea. LASSO regression was used to predict the normal TT-TG distances. Results The dimensional parameters, TT-TG distance, and femoral aspect ratio of the men were significantly larger than those of women (all p values < 0.05). However, after controlling for the bias from age, height, and weight, there were no significant differences in TT-TG distances and anterior-posterior dimensions between the sexes (all p values > 0.05). The Pearson correlation coefficients between the anterior femoral offset and other indexes were consistently below 0.3, indicating no relationship or a weak relationship. Similar results were observed for the sulcus angle and the Wiberg index. Using LASSO regression, we obtained four parameters to predict the TT-TG distance (R2 = 0.5612, p < 0.01) to achieve the optimal accuracy and convenience. Conclusions Normative data of patellofemoral morphology were provided for the Chinese population. The anterior-posterior dimensions of the women were thicker than those of men for the same medial-lateral dimensions. More attention should be paid to not only sex differences but also individual differences, especially the anterior condyle and trochlea. In addition, this study provided a new method to predict TT-TG distances accurately.

AbstractLoadings in temporomandibular joints (TMJs) are essential factors in dysfunction of TMJs, and are barely noticed in treatment of maxillofacial deformity. The only approach, which can access stresses in TMJs, could expend day’s even weeks to complete. The objective of the study was to compare the differences of the morphological and biomechanical characteristics of TMJs between asymptomatic subjects and patients with mandibular prognathism, and to preliminarily analyze the connection between the two kinds of characteristics. Morphological measurements and finite element analysis (FEA) corresponding to the central occlusion were carried out on the models of 13 mandibular prognathism patients and 10 asymptomatic subjects. The results indicated that the joint spaces of the patients were significantly lower than those of the asymptomatic subjects, while the stresses of patients were significantly greater than those of asymptomatic subjects, especially the stresses on discs. The results of Pearson correlation analysis showed that weak or no correlations were found between the von Mises stresses and the joint spaces of asymptomatic subjects, while moderate, even high correlations were found in the patients. Thus, it was shown to be a feasible way to use morphological parameters to predict the internal loads of TMJs.

Abstract Background: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in angiogenesis, immune response, inflammatory response and tumor development and metastasis. m6 A (N6 - methyladenosine) is one of the most common RNA modifications in eukaryotes. The aim of our research was to investigate the potential prognostic value of m6A-related lncRNAs in ovarian cancer (OC).Methods: The data we need for our research was downloaded from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Pearson correlation analysis between 21 m6A regulators and lncRNAs was performed to identify m6A-related lncRNAs. Univariate Cox regression analysis was implemented to screen for lncRNAs with prognostic value. A least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression and multivariate Cox regression analyses was used to further reduct the lncRNAs with prognostic value and construct a m6A-related lncRNAs signature for predicting the prognosis of OC patients. Results: 275 m6A-related lncRNAs were obtained using pearson correlation analysis. 29 m6A-related lncRNAs with prognostic value was selected through univariate Cox regression analysis. Then, a seven m6A-related lncRNAs signature was identified by LASSO Cox regression. Each patient obtained a riskscore through multivariate Cox regression analyses and the patients were classified into high-and low-risk group using the median riskscore as a cutoff. Kaplan-Meier curve revealed that the patients in high-risk group have poor outcome. The receiver operating characteristic curve revealed that the predictive potential of the m6A-related lncRNAs signature for OC was powerful. The predictive potential of the m6A-related lncRNAs signature was successfully validated in the GSE9891, GSE26193 datasets and our clinical specimens. Multivariate analyses suggested that the m6A-related lncRNAs signature was an independent prognostic factor for OC patients. Moreover, a nomogram based on the expression level of the seven m6A-related lncRNAs was established to predict survival rate of patients with OC. Finally, a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network associated with the seven m6A-related lncRNAs was constructed to understand the possible mechanisms of the m6A-related lncRNAs involed in the progression of OC.Conclusions: In conclusion, our research revealed that the m6A-related lncRNAs may affect the prognosis of OC patients and identified a seven m6A-related lncRNAs signature to predict the prognosis of OC patients.
