In this paper, by studying the engineering properties of rubber particles-improved fly ash soil, the authors provide technical parameters for setting up cold-resistance layer in the seasonal frozen zone. In the experiment, rubber particles are mixed into the fly ash soil by mass of 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 5% and 7% and unconfined compressive strength testing, frost heave test, insulation test and thermal conductivity test. By analyzing the test results, the authors drew the conclusion that fly ash soil improved by rubber particles has a high compressive strength, a small amount of frost heave, good insulation performance, small thermal conductivity coefficient.Therefore, improved fly ash soil with rubber particles is one of the preferred materials to set up the cold resistance layer in seasonal frost zone.

In this paper, the metakaolin is used as the raw material with aluminosilicate compounds to produce the geopolymer. The effects of three levels of two major controlling factors, the degree of polymerization of the activating solution (weight ratio of SiO2 to Na2O) of 0.4, 0.7 and 1.0 and the weight ratio of liquid to solid (L/S) of 0.7, 0.85 and 1.00 on the engineering properties of geopolymer are investigated. The experimental results show that, at age of 28 days, the compressive strength increases from the lowest 37.33 MPa (SiO2/Na2O = 0.4 and L/S = 0.7) to the highest 71.21 MPa (SiO2/Na2O = 0.7 and L/S = 0.7). While, the thermal conductivity increases from the lowest 0.39 w/mk (SiO2/Na2O = 0.4 and L/S = 1.0) to the highest 0.761 w/mk (SiO2/Na2O = 1.0 and L/S = 0.7).

Aimed at improving the waterproofing property of foamed concrete, a heat-insulating and waterproofing composite applied in underground engineering was prepared by using cementitious capillary crystalline waterproofing material and foamed concrete. The properties of foamed concrete and composite such as compressive strength, water absorption and thermal conductivity were tested and contrasted, and the compounding reaction mechanism was analyzed. The results show that, compared with foamed concrete, the water absorption of composite has been significantly reduced while the heat-insulating property of foamed concrete is maintained and the overall waterproofing and heat-insulation performance has been significantly improved. A new approach solving underground heat-harm such as high temperature and high humidity is provided.


This paper aimed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of HSC of M60 concrete adding 25% of fly ash to cement and sand and percentage variations of silica fumes 0%,5% and 10% to cement with varying sizes of 10mm,6mm,2mm and powder of granite aggregate with w/c of 0.32. Specimens are tested for compressive strength using 10cm X 10cmX10cm cubes for 7,14,28 days flexural strength was determined by using 10cmX10cmX50cm beam specimens at 28 days and 15cm diameter and 30cm height cylinder specimens at 28 days using super plasticizers of conplast 430 as a water reducing agent. In this paper the experimental set up is made to study the mechanical properties of HSC with and without coarse aggregate with varying sizes as 10mm, 6mm, 2mm and powder. Similarly, the effect of silica fume on HSC by varying its percentages as 0%, 5% and 10% in the mix studied. For all mixes 25% extra fly ash has been added for cement and sand.

Geopolymer concrete offers a favourable alternative to conventional Portland concrete due to its reduced embodied carbon dioxide (CO2) content. Engineering properties of geopolymer concrete, such as compressive strength, are commonly characterised based on experimental practices requiring large volumes of raw materials, time for sample preparation, and costly equipment. To help address this inefficiency, this study proposes machine learning-assisted numerical methods to predict compressive strength of fly ash-based geopolymer (FAGP) concrete. Methods assessed included artificial neural network (ANN), deep neural network (DNN), and deep residual network (ResNet), based on experimentally collected data. Performance of the proposed approaches were evaluated using various statistical measures including R-squared (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). Sensitivity analysis was carried out to identify effects of the following six input variables on the compressive strength of FAGP concrete: sodium hydroxide/sodium silicate ratio, fly ash/aggregate ratio, alkali activator/fly ash ratio, concentration of sodium hydroxide, curing time, and temperature. Fly ash/aggregate ratio was found to significantly affect compressive strength of FAGP concrete. Results obtained indicate that the proposed approaches offer reliable methods for FAGP design and optimisation. Of note was ResNet, which demonstrated the highest R2 and lowest RMSE and MAPE values.

Geopolymer is a greener alternative cement produced from the reaction of pozzolans and strong alkali solutions. Generally, the cement industry is one of largest producers of CO2that caused global warming. For geopolymer mortar usage, Portland cement is not utilized at all. In this research, geopolymer mortars were prepared by mixing metakaolin, various wastes (fly ash, bagasse ash and rice husk ash) varied as 80:20, 50:50 and 20:80, 15M NaOH, Na2SiO3and sand. The influence of various parameters such as metakaolin to ashes ratios and pozzolans to alkali ratios on engineering properties of metakaolin blended wastes geopolymer mortar were studied. Compressive strength tests were carried out on 25 x 25 x 25 mm3cube geopolymer mortar specimens at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 91 air curing days. Physical and chemical properties were also investigated at the same times. The test results revealed that the highest compressive strength was 20% metakaolin - 80% fly ash geopolymer mortar. When the curing times increases, the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar also increases. The mixing of metakaolin and bagasse ash/rice husk ash presented lower compressive strength but higher water absorption and porosity. For FTIR results, Si-O, Al-O and Si-O-Na+were found. Moreover, the geopolymer mortar could easily plastered on the wall.

This work investigated the recycling of fly ash waste and cullet as the raw materials for lightweight bodies produced by heat treatment and using sodium silicate as the binder. Borax was mixed with fly ash and cullet, and put into the block in dimension 10x10x2 cm3. The lightweight materials thus produced were then sintered at temperature of 800 °C. Density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity were determined. Borax showed a positive sintering effect on the porosity of lightweight material during the heat process. The compressive strength of lightweight material diminished with the reduction of density and thermal conductivity. Lightweight material manufactured with borax showed the lower density and thermal conductivity accompanied by the higher compressive strength. The test results indicated that using fly ash and cullet as the raw material with borax could obtain the lightweight material, thus enhancing the possibility of its reuse in a sustainable way.

Conventional cementitious materials as tunnel supporting materials are utilised in the construction of the final repository for spent nuclear fuel. However, the use of cementitious material releases alkaline ions from pH12 to pH13 plumed into groundwater. Such a high pH is detrimental to the performance of the bentonite functioning, which may possibly enhance the dissolution and alteration of the fracture buffer and filling materials. Instead, low-pH cementitious materials are being developed for use in geological repositories. This study is aimed at evaluating the usability of low-pH cementitious materials containing 40% silica fume or composites blended with 20% silica fume and 40% fly ash. Engineering properties were analysed and verified through experimental research using the flow, compressive strength, pH measurement and hydraulic conductivity. Test results show that the replacement level with 40% of silica fume or 20% of silica fume and 40% of fly ash was suitable for the mixture of low-pH cementitious. Compared to the compressive strength and water permeability of ordinary cementitious, those of low-pH cementitious enhanced better engineered performances at the age of 91 days. The information is contributed us to establish the long-term durability and environmental requirements of disposal repositories in Taiwan.

This paper investigates the effect of incorporation of lightweight aggregate and foam in the preparation of lightweight aggregate geopolymer concrete (LWAGC) and lightweight aggregate foamed geopolymer concrete (LWAFGC). The geopolymer paste was formed by alkali activation of Class F fly ash in mixture of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide solution. LWAGC was incorporated with expanded clay lightweight aggregate and river sand while hydrogen peroxide was added as foaming agent for LWAFGC. Results showed that LWAGC and LWAFGC achieved an excellent 28-day compressive strength of 60 MPa and 20 MPa, respectively. The bulk densities were 1815 kg/m3 for LWAGC and 1593 kg/m3 for LWAFGC. Even so, low thermal conductivity of 0.12 W/mK and 0.09 W/mK were reported. It was concluded that the joint effect of lightweight aggregate and foam produced geopolymer concrete with good mechanical strength while having excellent thermal insulating properties. The geopolymer concretes possessed high strength-to-density ratio to be regarded as lightweight high-performance structures.
