In this paper, a new concept of combination degree (CBD) is proposed. And the CBD between nylon and insert in the pipe wrench is investigated using ANSYS .Then studied the effects of factors on the CBD, such as load, elastic modulus, friction coefficient and behavior of contact surface between the nylon and the steel insert. The results indicate that as the load increases from500Nm to1500Nm, the CBD declines from4.92mm-1 to 1.23mm-1, which presents the combinative characteristics become worse. However, with the elastic modulus and the friction coefficient increases respectively, the CBD also increases. When the elastic modulus is 8000MPa, its CBD goes up to1.78mm-1. As the friction coefficient ranges from 0.1 to 0.5,the CBD increases from1.56mm-1 to 2.32mm-1.In addition, different behaviors of contact surface between the nylon and the insert have different effects on the CBD. When such behavior of contact surface is bonded, its CBD is the highest, 3.31mm-1, but when such behavior of contact surface is standard which means that if the separation between the nylon and the insert occurs, the normal pressure equals zero. And its CBD is the lowest, 1.78 mm-1.

Abstract This study proposes a modification of the Matsumoto equation using a directional parameter of tooth surfaces to adapt various gear finishing processes. The directional parameters of a contact surface, which affect oil film formations, have been discussed in the field of tribology; but this effect has been undetermined on the meshing gear tooth surfaces having directional machining marks. Thus, this paper investigates the relationship between the gear frictional coefficients and the directional parameters (based on ISO25178) of their tooth surfaces with the various finishing processes; and modifies the Matsumoto equation by introducing a new directional parameter to augment the various gear finishing processes. Our findings indicate that through optimizing the coefficient of the correction term the include the new directional parameter, the calculated friction values using the modified Matsumoto equation correlate more highly to the experimental friction values than that using the unmodified Matsumoto equation.

Abstract Bolted connection is one of the most widely used mechanical connections because of its easiness of installation and disassembly. Research of bolted joints mainly focuses on two aspects: high precision tightening and improvement of anti-loosening performance. The under-head bearing friction coefficient and the thread friction coefficient are the two most important parameters that affect the tightening result of the bolted joint. They are also the most critical parameters that affect the anti-loosening performance of the bolted joint. Coulomb friction model is a commonly used model to describe under-head bearing friction and thread friction, which considers the friction coefficient as a constant independent of normal pressure and relative sliding velocity. In this paper, the viscous effect of the under-head bearing friction and thread friction is observed by measuring the friction coefficient of bolted joints. The value of the friction coefficient increases with the increase of the relative sliding velocity and the decrease of the normal pressure. It is found that the Coulomb viscous friction model can better describe the friction coefficient of bolted joints. Taking into account the dense friction effect, the loosening prediction model of bolted joints is modified. The experimental results show that the Coulomb viscous friction model can better describe the under-head bearing friction coefficient and thread friction coefficient. The model considering the dense effect can more accurately predict the loosening characteristics of bolted joints.

Most previous studies of boundary lubrication have ignored the contribution of surface roughness to friction. However, recent work by Moalic et al. (1987) has shown that when asperity contacts can be modelled by a slip line field, there is a precise relation between the friction coefficient and the asperity slope. Here, it is shown that there is also a relation between the friction coefficient and the normal pressure for rough surfaces which can be predicted from a development of the slip line field model.

After modifying the Wahime/Bay friction model, a new friction model suitable for micro-forming process without lubrication is established. In this model, it is shows that the friction coefficient is a function of strain hardening exponent, the normal pressure and the initial yield stress of material. Based on the experimental data, the micro-upsetting process is simulated using the proposed friction model. The simulation results are used to investigate the size effect on the dry friction behavior. It is found that the Coulomb’s friction coefficient is dropping with miniaturization of specimens when the amount of reduction is not too large.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of friction coefficient of materials with different elastic modulus on the variation of velocity and load under water lubrication and oil lubrication conditions. Design/methodology/approach Low-viscosity lubricating oil and water were used as lubricants to test the friction performance of the ball-disc contact friction pair in the lubrication state on the universal micro-tribometer multi-functional friction and wear test system. Findings In the same speed range, the lubrication states from soft to rigid materials are not necessarily similar to each other. Generally, the material with low elastic modulus is suitable in low-viscosity lubricant environments, while the material with high elastic modulus has relatively smaller friction coefficients in oil-lubricated environments compared with water lubrication. However, the coefficients of polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylen and polyoxymethylene are exceeded by rubber’s coefficients under water lubrication in the same experiment environments, and their lubrication states are not affected by lubricants. The friction coefficient of the friction pair decreases with the increase of loads; however, it does not apply to all materials. The friction coefficients of materials with smaller elastic modulus such as rubber under high loads are rather large. Therefore, the elastic modulus of the material under high loads is a factor to be considered. Originality/value The Stribeck curves study of the ball-disk contact friction pair comprising soft and rigid materials, whose elastic modulus is from hundreds of GPa to a few of MPa, was carried out. The influence of different speeds, loads and lubricants on the friction coefficient of the friction pair was revealed, which provided a research basis for the selection and matching of friction pair materials.

In this study, epoxy resin (EP) composites were prepared by using molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and helical carbon nanotubes (H-CNTs) as the antifriction and reinforcing phases, respectively. The effects of MoS2 and H-CNTs on the friction coefficient, wear amount, hardness, and elastic modulus of the composites were investigated. The tribological properties of the composites were tested using the UMT-3MT friction testing machine, non-contact three-dimensional surface profilometers, and nanoindenters. The analytical results showed that the friction coefficient of the composites initially decreased and then increased with the increase in the MoS2 content. The friction coefficient was the smallest when the MoS2 content in the EP was 6%, and the wear amount increased gradually. With the increasing content of H-CNTs, the friction coefficient of the composite material did not change significantly, although the wear amount decreased gradually. When the MoS2 and H-CNTs contents were 6% and 4%, respectively, the composite exhibited the minimum friction coefficient and a small amount of wear. Moreover, the addition of H-CNTs significantly enhanced the hardness and elastic modulus of the composites, which could be applied as materials in high-temperature and high-pressure environments where lubricants and greases do not work.

The friction behavior of a high-purity bulk titanium aluminum carbide (Ti3AlC2) material dryly sliding against low carbon steel was investigated. Tests were performed using a block-on-disk type high-speed friction tester under sliding speed of 20 m/s and 60 m/s, several normal pressures from 0.1 to 0.8 MPa. The results showed that the friction coefficient is as low as about 0.18 for sliding speed of 20 m/s and only 0.1 for 60 m/s, and that almost not changes with the normal pressure. The reason could be related with the presence of a surface layer on the friction surface. The layer was analyzed to consist of Ti, Al and Fe oxides, which played a lubricate part inducing the friction coefficient decrease on the friction surface.

The time-dependent behaviors of the sedimentary rocks which refer to the altering of the mechanical and deformable properties of rock elements in the long-term period are of increasing importance in the investigation of the failure mechanism of the rock strata in underground coal mines. In order to obtain the accurate and reliable mechanical parameters of the sedimentary rocks at different weathering grades, the extensive experimental programs including the Brazilian splitting test, uniaxial compression tests, and direct shear tests have been carried out on the specimens that exposed to the nature environments at different durations. The correlation between the weathering grades and mechanical parameters including uniaxial tensile strength, uniaxial compression strength, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, cohesion, and friction coefficient was proposed. The obtained results suggested that uniaxial tensile strength, uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, and cohesion dramatically decreased with increasing weathering time, characterized as the negative exponential relationship in general. The influences of various weathering grades on fracture behavior of the rock specimens were discussed. The cumulative damage of the rock by the weathering time decreased the friction coefficient of the specimens which led to the initiation and propagation of microcrack within the rock at lower stress conditions. The obtained results improved the understanding of the roles of weathering on the mechanical properties of sedimentary rocks, which is helpful in the design of the underground geotechnical structures.

Experimental investigations were carried out to verify if the friction reduction in lubrication can be expanded by a textured surface with sawtooth riblets. Sawtooth riblets were formed by ultraprecision diamond cutting, with a ridge angle of about 60°–90° and height of about 20–50 μm on the contact surface. Six types of textured surfaces with different ridge angles, heights, and sliding directions were tested and compared with the untextured surface. The tribological tests were conducted by a flat-on-flat tribometer in lubrication. The effects of the ridge angle, height, and relative sliding direction on the friction coefficient in lubrication were reported.

In order to analyze the effect of proceeding on the mechanical and tribological properties of DLC films. Three DLC films samples on single silicon wafers were prepared by CVD method. The changed bias voltages were 300V, 350V, 450V separately. The structure and topography of prepared films were studied by Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The hardness and elastic modulus together with friction coefficient of DLC films were measured by Tribolab system. According to the Raman spectra, the G and D peak shift to left with the increasing of bias voltage. Nano indent showed that the hardness (H) of the DLC films decreases from 19.63GPa to 18.12GPa with the increasing of bias voltages, and the value of elastic modulus (E) is also behaving the same trend as H from 157.95GPa to 146.95GPa. Friction coefficients of the three samples were measured by nano-scratch method under the constant normal load of 1000uN and the slide velocity of 3 um/sec, the corresponding friction coefficient is 0.0804 for DLC300, 0.0508for DLC350 and 0.0594 for DLC450 separately, which indicates that high hardness materials may not necessarily the perfect frictional material, but compound properties of hardness and elastic modulus
