AZ31B magnesium alloys recycled by solid-state process from oxidized chip were extruded repeately. Microstructures and mechanical properties of recycled alloys for different extrusion times were studied. With the increasing extrusion times, the breaking degree and homogeneity of oxide increase and stream line feature of oxide become less obvious. Second extrusion make dynamic recrystallization microstructure of recycled alloy become more homogeneous and fine, but the microstructure is not refined furtherly after 3 and 4 times extrusion. The ultimate tensile strength increases with the increasing extrusion time, which resulting from the microstructure evolution during repeating extrusion and the enhanced bonding between oxide and magnesium alloy matrix. The elongation to failure of recycled alloy increases after second extrusion and continuously decreases after 3 and 4 time extrusion. This is determined not only by the variation of dynamic recrystallization microstructure and bonding strength between chips but also by the distribution status of oxide.

The Mg-(4,6)Zn-1Ca-1RE-0.5Mn magnesium alloy sheets were processed by hot rolling, and the effect of Zn concentration on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated using OM,SEM and XRD technique. The Mg-4Zn-1Ca-1RE-0.5Mn sheet exhibits excellent tensile properties at ambient temperature with ultimate tensile strength of 332MPa and elongation to failure of 4.5%. The notable mechanical properties were attributed to fine DRX grains and large deformed grains with intense basal texture.

This work is to study the influence of heat treatment on microstrudture and mechanical properties of AZ31B magnesium alloy prepared by solid -state recycling. AZ31B magnesium alloy chips were recycled by hot extruding. Three different heat treatments were conducted for recycled alloy. Mechanical properties and microstructure of the recycled specimen and heat treated specimen were investigated. 300°C×2h annealing specimen exhibits finer grain due to static recrystallization, and microstructure of 400°C×2h annealing specimen becomes more coarse. 300°C×2h annealing treatment improves obviously strength and ductility of recycled alloy. Ultimate tensile strength of alloy decreases and elongation to failure increases after 400°C×2h annealing. Grain size, dislocation density and bonding of chips have an effect on the elongation of recycled materials. 190°C×8h ageing has no influence on microstructure and mechanical properties of recycled alloy.

AbstractThe effects of Bi on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ80-2Sn alloy were investigated. The results show that the addition of Bi within the as-cast AZ80-2Sn alloy promotes the formation of Mg3Bi2 phase, which can refine the grains and make the eutectic phases discontinuous. The addition of 0.5 % Bi within the as-extruded AZ80-2Sn alloy, the average grain size decreases to 12 μm and the fine granular Mg17Al12 and Mg3Bi2 phases are dispersed in the α-Mg matrix. With an increase in Bi content, the Mg17Al12 and Mg3Bi2 phases become coarsened and the grain size increases. The as-extruded AZ80-2Sn-0.5 %Bi alloy has the optimal properties, and the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are 379.6 MPa, 247.1 MPa and 14.8 %, respectively.

Abstract Applying aluminum composite in the defense, aerospace and automotive industries depends on how they behave during the elasto-plastic form change. In addition to the factors responsible for changing the form of the alloy, many other factors have an impact on the behavior of the composite form change. In this study, the effect of casting type on the mechanical properties of Al-Si nano composites has been investigated. Due to the proper distribution of reinforcing particles, tensile strength in compo casting sample in semi-solid state is higher than sand casting and squeeze casting. In all samples, the tensile strength of the heat-treated samples has increased by about 30%. Tensile strength in compo casting sample in semi-solid state was obtained with higher nano particle reinforcing particles, which can be explained by the fact that the percentage of elongation in micro samples was lower than that of nano composite samples.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-3Sn-xGd (x=0, 0.2, 1 wt.%) alloys were studied by using OM, SEM, EDX, XRD etc. With the increase of Gd, the formation of Mg2Sn phase was impeded and the MgSnGd phase formed and the volume fraction of this new phase obviously increased. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure increased with dilute Gd addition but sharply decreased when the Gd addition comes to 1.34 wt.%. The possible reasons for the variation in microstructure and mechanical properties were discussed.

Homogenized magnesium alloy Mg-6Zn-Si-0.25Ca has been hot-extruded and then aging treated for improving the magnesium alloy plastic deformation ability and promoting applications of magnesium alloys. In the hot extrusion process, the influences of extrusion parameters for microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-6Zn-Si-0.25Ca magnesium alloy were investigated. The results show that dynamic recrystallization occurred during hot extrusion. Compared with as-cast alloy, the grains are fined remarkably, and the mechanical properties are enhanced obviously. Twin crystals appeared in grains after hot extrusion, with the extrusion temperature rising, twin crystal structures has been reduced. Aging further increased the mechanical properties of the estruded alloy. The ultimate tensile strength of Mg-6Zn-Si-0.25Ca alloy is about 385 MPa and the elongation is about 11% when extruded at 320°C(extrusion ratio is 10) and aged at 190°C for 8h.

Equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) was applied to an extruded ZW1101 (Mg - 11wt%Zn - 0.9wt%Y) Mg alloy containing quasicrystallines. The as-extruded ZW1101 alloy had an initial grain size of about 12 µm and bands of quasicrystalline phases parallel to the extrusion direction. After the extruded alloy was subjected to ECAE processing, the grain size was refined to about 0.5 µm, and the quasicrystalline phases were further broken and dispersed in the matrix. After the ECAE processing, the micro-hardness and yield strength of the alloy were increased, however, the ultimate tensile strength and the ductility of the alloy were slightly decreased.

The thixoforging process in which magazine plates of AZ91D magnesium alloy were thixoforged in semi-solid state using semi-solid billets prepared by common SIMA method and new SIMA method was investigated. The results show that the pressure has a great influence on the semi-solid billet’s ability to fill die’s cavity. When the pressure is 500KN, the semi-solid billet can’t fill the die’s cavity completely. When the pressure is 2000KN, the semi-solid billet can fill the die’s cavity completely. Room temperature mechanical properties, such as yield strength of 201.4MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 321.8MPa and elongation of 15.3%, can be obtained successfully when the technological parameters, including pressure of 200KN, die preheating temperature of 723K, holding for 20min at 818K, are satisfied. Comparing with common SIMA, mechanical properties of room temperature and high temperature at 373Kare enhanced heavily.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of the Mg-5Y-xMM alloys have been investigated, where MM stands for the Ce-rich misch metal. It was found that the additions of the MM led to refinement of the microstructures and improvement of the mechanical properties. The dynamic recrystallization has occurred during hot extrusion. As a result, the mechanical properties of the alloys were greatly improved after hot extrusion. It was indicated that the specimens of the extruded alloy Mg-5Y-3MM displayed a higher tensile strength, and the values of the ultimate tensile strength and yield tensile strength were 260 and 183MPa, respectively.
