Sb layered Te/Cd thin films have been prepared by using Stacked Elemental Layer (SEL) method. The presence of mixed phases (CdTe and Sb2Te3) in the films was confirmed by the x-ray diffraction technique. The calculated structural parameters demonstrated the feasibility of Sb doping via SEL method. The topographical and electrical studies of the synthesized thin films depicted the influence of Sb on both surface morphology and conductivity. The values of conductivity of the annealed films were in between 2 x 10-3 and 175 x 10-2 Scm-2. A desired chemical composition of films was confirmed from spectrum shape analysis using energy dispersive x-ray.

Strontium substituted hydroxyapatite(SrHAp) were fabricated both in the form of powder as reference and thin film by using inorganic precursor reaction. The sol-gel process has been used for the deposition of SrHAp layer on stainless steal 316L substrate by spin coating technique, after that the films were annealed in air at various temperatures. The chemical composition of SrHAp is represented (SrxCa1-x)5(PO4)3OH, where x is equal to 0, 0.5 and 1.0. Investigations of the phase structure of SrHAp were carried out by using X-ray diffraction technique (XRD). The results showed that strontium is incorporated into hydroxyapatite where its substitution for calcium increases in the lattice parameters, and Sr3(PO4)2 can be detected at 900°C. The SEM micrographs showed that SrHAp films exhibited porous structure before develop to a cross-linking structure.

AbstractPulsed Laser Deposition method (PLD) was used to grow nitinol (NiTi) thin films with goal of investigating their biocompatibility. High purity Ni and Ti targets were alternatively ablated in vacuum with a laser beam (λ=355 nm, 10 Hz) and the material was collected on room temperature Ti substrates. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses have been performed to investigate the chemical composition, crystalline structure and surface morphology of the NiTi films. The nitinol layers biocompatibility has been tested using as a metric the extent to whichthe cells adhereduring the culture period on the surface of NiTi layers deposited on Ti substrates. Vero and fibroblast cell lines dispersed into MEM (Eagle) solution containing 8% fetal bovine serum, at 37° C, were used for tests. Preliminary studies indicate that the interaction at the interface is specifically controlled by the surface morphology, (especially by surface roughness), and by the chemical state of the surface. Cell behavior after contact with NiTi/Ti structure for different intervals (18, 22 and 25 days for the Vero cells, and after 10 and 25 days for fibroblasts) supports the conclusion that NiTi is a very good candidate as a biocompatible material.

AbstractFluorine doped tin oxide thin films were prepared from solutions with high fluorine contents using the spray pyrolysis technique; the resulting films were studied by electron and X-ray diffraction methods; the resonant nuclear reaction (RNR) method was used to determine the final concentration of fluorine atoms in our films for different doping levels. Also, electrical and optical properties of SnO2:F films were measured and correlated with deposition and structural parameters obtained from X-Ray diffraction and electron microscopy studies.

AbstractWe have investigated the formation of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin films by real-time X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments while annealing differently deposited and composed stacked elemental layer (SEL) precursors. The in-situ measurements during the selenization of bi-layered Cu/In precursors reveal, that the semiconductor formation process is similar for precursors with thermally evaporated or sputtered indium. In both cases, the formation of binary copper and indium selenides is observed at temperatures around the melting point of selenium. After subsequent selenium transfer reactions, the chalcopyrite CuInSe2 is formed from the educt phases Cu2-xSe and InSe.The addition of gallium leads to the formation of the intermetallic precursor phase Cu9Ga4, which reduces the overall amount of copper and gallium selenides at process temperatures above 500 K. This causes an ongoing selenization in the indium selenium subsystem, which results in the formation of CuInSe2 from the educt phases Cu2-xSe and the selenium richest indium selenide g-In2Se3.

M-plane GaN thin films were grown on LiAlO2 substrates under different N/Ga flux ratios by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. An anisotropic growth of M-plane GaN was demonstrated against the N/Ga flux ratio. As the N/Ga flux ratio decreased by increasing Ga flux, the GaN surface trended to a flat morphology with stripes along [112-0]. According to high-resolution X-ray diffraction analysis, Li5GaO4 was observed on the interface between GaN and LiAlO2 substrate. The formation of Li5GaO4 would influence the surface morphology and crystal quality.

ABSTRACTThe nanoindentation behavior of DC magnetron sputtered 10 nm Cu and 10 nm Cu/2 nm Cr thin films deposited on Si (100) has been studied using a Hysitron nanomechanical system. X- ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity were used to measure the film structure and film thickness, respectively. The grain size and orientation of Cu and Cu/Cr thin films were measured by TEM. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to evaluate the surface morphology and roughness. At the same load, the nanoindentaion displacement of Cu/Cr is smaller than that for Cu, i.e., the 2nm thick Cr underlayer enhances the hardness of Cu. X-ray, TEM, and AFM results show that the grain size of Cu/Cr (< 15 nm) is actually larger than Cu (∼ 3 nm) indicating that the inverse Hall-Petch relationship may be operative.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were prepared by thermal oxidation of vacuum evaporated metallic zinc films. Some structural investigation, performed by X-ray diffraction technique, showed that films are polycrystalline and have a würtzite structure. We also determined some structural parameters of the films. The optical absorption was studied in the wavelength range from 300 nm to 1700 nm. Photoluminescence spectra at temperatures 293 K and 78 K have been analysed.

In the present work, reactive DC magnetron sputtering method is used to deposit TiO2 thin films on glass substrates. The structural, surface morphology and optical studies of TiO2 thin films were discussed by varying the oxygen flow rates from 1 to 4 sccm. X-ray diffraction patterns of TiO2 thin films show amorphous nature. The surface morphological and elemental composition of TiO2 thin films were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. From the optical absorption spectra, the shifting of absorption edge towards the longer wavelength leads to the decrement of optical bandgap from 3.48 to 3.19 eV with an increase of oxygen flow rate from 1 to 4 sccm.

AbstractPLZT thin films from a stoichiometric (9/65/35) commercial target were laser deposited using the second and third harmonics of a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser. The films were grown on oriented sapphire substrates and analysed by X-ray diffraction, SEM and EDX techniques. The influence of the deposition parameters laser fluence and substrate temperature on the physical characteristics of the films is presented.

In this work the effect of substrate and vaporization temperatures on the structural parameters (sizes of coherent scattering region, values of strain), phase and chemical composition, surface morphology of Co films is revealed. Co films were deposited on Si (100) substrates by Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition using the diiminate complex Co (N’acN’ac)2 as a precursor. The sizes of coherent scattering region, values of strain and phase composition of Co films were determined by the X-ray diffraction analysis. The chemical composition was identified by the Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The surface morphology of Co films was investigated by scanning electron microscope. It is found that the variation of deposition conditions allows us widely to change structural parameters and chemical composition of Co films.
