Nursing undergraduate students are a reserve force for the rescue of natural disaster. Their abilities in self-cognition and response are supposed to be closely related to the development and perfection of them in moral and personality, and their attitude and quality when they are engaged in nursing work in the future. The questionnaire investigation demonstrated that the nursing undergraduate students understood the natural disaster cognition to some extent, but their understanding was limited and one-sided; the students’ abilities in the disaster cognition were influenced by sex, the cognition on nursing specialized responsibility, the self-role cognition and the deed to disaster reserve knowledge (P < 0. 05), indicating that they did not have a full ability to deal with a disaster independently. Therefore, nursing undergraduate students should be educated through various pathways and in different forms in colleges and universities to improve their cognition on the disaster prevention and handling ability.

For a long time, the Western Valley Cities (WVC) had suffered serious threats from several natural disasters, and integrated prevention natural disasters has been a primary issue to their sustainable development and inhabitation environment construction. As a significant public policy for conducting city development and guaranteeing public safety, city planning serves an irreplaceable function in WVC natural disasters integrated prevention. Take Lanzhou city as a WVC example, the paper firstly analyzing its main natural disasters that include earthquake, flood, sandstorm and geological disasters. Further, it systematically summarizes their four typical characteristics, which are forceful relevance with geographical environment, higher disasters continuous occurrence, stronger amplifying nature of disaster losses and higher costs and difficulties of rescues and reconstructions. Finally, from four aspects that are improving legal status of disasters integrated prevention planning, establishing a rational optimal allocation model of city land-use, building a multilevel natural disaster prevention system and constructing prevention disaster communities, it puts forward natural disasters integrated prevention countermeasures for WVC based on the perspective of city planning.

This chapter chronologically follows a multi-phased service-learning project. The project involved graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in Information Technology (IT) courses. A network infrastructure, including the physical wiring, was planned, designed, and built for a K-8 elementary school primarily to provide Internet access. A later group also assessed the future of the network. The self-selected students were members of their chosen team for the relevant semester and may be viewed as part of the larger team for the multi-phased project. The pros, cons, and caveats of this particular service-learning project are assessed and suggestions for similar projects are included.

Climate change and sea level rise are an existing threat of humanity in the 21st century. The victims of natural disasters and climate change are none other than people who suffer with increasing levels of disasters for a country and a region. Therefore, the study proposes and implements solutions to minimize negative impacts of natural disasters and adapts to the process of global climate change, which is an urgent task of every country. One of the solutions to improve the capacity of natural disaster prevention and mitigation for ethnic minorities is to educate and raise awareness for people in natural disaster prevention. Thus, building a model of clubs for information, education and communication for preventing natural disasters to improve disaster prevention capacity of ethnic minorities is of utmost importance.

Anthropomorphization is the tendency to ascribe humanlike features and mental states, such as free will and consciousness, to nonhuman beings or inanimate agents. Two studies investigated the consequences of the anthropomorphization of nature on people’s willingness to help victims of natural disasters. Study 1 (N = 96) showed that the humanization of nature correlated negatively with willingness to help natural disaster victims. Study 2 (N = 52) tested for causality, showing that the anthropomorphization of nature reduced participants’ intentions to help the victims. Overall, our findings suggest that humanizing nature undermines the tendency to support victims of natural disasters.

Life skills education to deal with the climate change and management of natural disaster prevention for students in ethnic minorities boarding high schools are very necessary nowadays. Based on educational activities of life skills, we establish and develop the awareness, attitudes and behavior for students, help them to find the causes and consequences of climate change and the natural disaster so that they shape attitudes and behavior of themselves in adaptation and mitigation due to climate change and natural disasters, as well as conscious propaganda for everyone to perform, toward a better life, a civilized society, meet overall educational goals during the current period. So that, life skills education for the goals of meeting the needs of disaster prevention for students are concerned. However, we not only say doctrinairely but also pay attention to the results of the life skills education due to meet the needs of disaster prevention, by then we form perceptions, attitudes and behavior for students in schools and in society. So there must be coordination between the forces of education in schools with families and society. Therefore, life skills education for students acquire sustainably. Assay results consulted reviews of managers, teachers showed that life skills educational management measures meeting the needs of disaster prevention for the students are necessary and available, suitable with the practice of ethnic minorities boarding high schools.

ASEAN is one of the regions with the highest rate of disaster vulnerability. Tsunami 2004 has triggered the momentum for Indonesia and ASEAN to deal with disaster-related issues more seriously. Losses and casualties from the catastrophe led to the decision by Indonesian government to put disaster prevention and risk reduction as a priority. Indonesia continues to encourage and supporting ASEAN in order to improve the region’s capability to deal with natural disaster. Through AADMER (ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response) that was signed in July 2005, ASEAN held an unequivocal and defined base in any efforts of disaster management, especially in the ASEAN region. Through Qualitative Methodology, this paper will discuss about how the disaster diplomacy of Indonesia contributes to the improvement of ASEAN’s capability in the disaster management, but also examines BNPB as both the backbone and the focal point of Indonesia’s disaster management, which then leads up to how disaster can abolish certain diplomatic hurdles, as well as improving regional cooperation, and strengthen the Indonesia’s position as a key country in regional disaster management.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar a efetividade do conjunto normativo no cenário internacional no que diz respeito a prevenção e resposta dos desastres naturais. Para que isso seja alcançado, primeiramente foi contextualizado a temática dos desastres naturais, conceituando-os para logo a seguir examinar os regimes existentes e sua efetividade. O estudo realizado é de natureza qualitativa descritiva, desenvolvido por meio de consultas documentais e bibliográficas, percorrendo as mais importantes fontes extraídas das principais Organizações Internacionais envolvidas. Foram levantadas as principais convenções e reuniões sobre meio ambiente, seus históricos e seus resultados. Conclui-se que tais conjuntos normativos são efetivos, porém não existe uma autoridade supranacional que demande a obrigatoriedade deles, não sendo possível assim extrair o melhor resultado dos regimes existentes.

Chapter 4 examines two well-trafficked mommy blogs written by Ivy League–educated professional women with children. Reading these blogs as part of the larger neoliberal feminist turn, the chapter demonstrates how neoliberal feminism is currently interpellating middle-aged women differently from their younger counterparts. If younger women are exhorted to sequence their lives in order to ensure a happy work-family balance in the future, for older feminist subjects—those who already have children and a successful career—notions of happiness have expanded to include the normative demand to live in the present as fully and as positively as possible. The turn from a future-oriented perspective to “the here and now” reveals how different temporalities operate as part of the technologies of the self within contemporary neoliberal feminism. This chapter thus demonstrates how positive affect is the mode through which technologies of the self-direct subjects toward certain temporal horizons.

Everyone can imagine their future self, even very young children, and this future self is usually positive and education-linked. To make progress toward an aspired future or away from a feared future requires people to plan and take action. Unfortunately, most people often start too late and commit minimal effort to ineffective strategies that lead their attention elsewhere. As a result, their high hopes and earnest resolutions often fall short. In Pathways to Success Through Identity-Based Motivation Daphna Oyserman focuses on situational constraints and affordances that trigger or impede taking action. Focusing on when the future-self matters and how to reduce the shortfall between the self that one aspires to become and the outcomes that one actually attains, Oyserman introduces the reader to the core theoretical framework of identity-based motivation (IBM) theory. IBM theory is the prediction that people prefer to act in identity-congruent ways but that the identity-to-behavior link is opaque for a number of reasons (the future feels far away, difficulty of working on goals is misinterpreted, and strategies for attaining goals do not feel identity-congruent). Oyserman's book goes on to also include the stakes and how the importance of education comes into play as it improves the lives of the individual, their family, and their society. The framework of IBM theory and how to achieve it is broken down into three parts: how to translate identity-based motivation into a practical intervention, an outline of the intervention, and empirical evidence that it works. In addition, the book also includes an implementation manual and fidelity measures for educators utilizing this book to intervene for the improvement of academic outcomes.

The chapter argues that natural disasters are common concerns in the international community. At the same time, the current international cooperation mechanism, based on the principle of equal sovereignty, require prior consent by the state affected by a natural disaster. Unfortunately, this is not always an efficient tool for the protection of victims. The globalization of problems and the proliferation of humanitarian crises make the veritable solidarity of the international community increasingly necessary, and therefore another high value, namely international solidarity or community obligations, should create direct and immediate obligations for all members of the international community. The main object of this chapter is to discuss the future-oriented direction of the law on natural disasters. This means, first, to ascertain the lex lata, especially customary rules. The chapter further offers some suggestions on possible ways for the international community to provide more effective relief for victims of natural disasters.
