Direct electrolysis of Ti and its alloys has been attempted by the process using a DC-ESR unit. The concept of the process is explained in detail, and the expected key issues are commented. Liquid Ti metal was obtained in a CaF2-CaO-TiO2 bath, and electrolysis by using a new type of the electrolytic cell was also tried. Ti-Al alloy was successfully deposited in a CaF2-CaO-TiO2-Al2O3 bath, whereas Ti-Si alloy was not obtained in a CaF2-CaO-TiO2-SiO2 bath yet. Ti-Fe alloy was extracted in CaF2-CaO-TiO2-FeO bath of a particular composition. A common correlation between the cathodic current efficiency and the average consumed electric power seen in the Ti, Ti-Al and Ti-Fe electrolysis suggested the importance of sufficient temperature in the process. The bath composition also affected the temperature through the change in the electric conductivity of the bath.

It is significant and necessary to carry out the research and development of self-lubricating bearing. The current study of metal matrix self-lubricating bearing materials is summarized. A new type of high temperature self-lubricating Ti-Al alloy bearing materials is proposed. It is light, anti-friction, anti-corrosion and high temperature resistance (600 °C). The future trend is introduced in the end of this paper.

Catalysts with high selectivity play key roles in green chemistry. In this work, a granular Raney Ni catalyst using carbon as support (Raney Ni/C) was developed by mixing phenolic resin with Ni-Al alloy, conducting carbonization at high temperature, and leaching with alkaline liquor. The as-prepared Raney Ni/C catalyst is suitable for use in fix-bed reactors. Moreover, it shows high activity and selectivity for catalytic acetone hydrogenation. For instance, at the reaction temperature of 120 °C, the conversion of acetone can reach up to 99.9% and the main byproduct methyl isobutylcarbinol (MIBC) content can be diminished to 0.02 wt%. The Raney Ni/C may represent a new type of shaped Raney metal catalysts, which are important fix-bed catalysts in chemical industry.

AbstractAn attempt to develop a new type of high temperature shape memory alloys based on the Ni-Al system has been made through microstructural control. Addition of Fe or Mn to the binary Ni-Al alloy results in the formation of a ductile fcc phase in an extremely brittle P matrix phase, leading to an improvement in its ductility. These ductile alloys with β + γ two-phase structure in the Ni-Al-Fe, Ni-Al-Mn and Ni-Al-Mn-Fe systems exhibit a shape memory effect due to a thermoelastic martensitic transformation in the temperature range between -100°C and 700°C; besides, the transformation temperatures are easily controlled by annealing at an appropriate temperature. These alloys are expected to be a new group of shape memory alloys which operate at elevated temperatures.

One method of creating a brass coating is through electrodeposition, which is most often completed in cyanide galvanic baths. Due to their toxicity, many investigations focused on the development of more environmentally friendly alternatives. The purpose of the study was to explore a new generation of non-aqueous cyanide-free baths based on 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ionic liquids. The study involved the formation of copper, zinc, and brass coatings. The influence of the bath composition, cathodic current density, and temperature was determined. The obtained coatings were characterized in terms of their morphology, chemical composition, phase composition, roughness, and corrosion resistance. It was found that the structure of the obtained coatings is strongly dependent on the process parameters. The three main structure types observed were as follows: fine-grained, porous, and olive-like. To the best knowledge of the authors, it is the first time the olive-like structure was observed in the case of an electrodeposited coating. The Cu-Zn coatings consisted of 19–96 at. % copper and exhibited relatively good corrosion resistance. A significant improvement of corrosion properties was found in the case of copper and brass coatings with the olive-like structure.

Compared with traditional crystalline materials, amorphous alloys have excellent corrosion and wear resistance and high elastic modulus, due to their unique short-range ordered and long-range disordered atomic arrangement as well as absence of defects, such as grain boundaries and dislocations. Owing to the limitation of the bulk size of amorphous alloys as structural materials, the application as functional coatings can widely extend their use in various engineering fields. This review first briefly introduces the problems involved during high temperature preparation processes of amorphous coatings, including laser cladding and thermal spraying. Cold spray (CS) is characterized by a low-temperature solid-state deposition, and thus the oxidation and crystallization related with a high temperature environment can be avoided during the formation of coatings. Therefore, CS has unique advantages in the preparation of fully amorphous alloy coatings. The research status of Fe-, Al-, Ni-, and Zr-based amorphous alloy coatings and amorphous composite coatings are reviewed. The influence of CS process parameters, and powders and substrate conditions on the microstructure, hardness, as well as wear and corrosion resistance of amorphous coatings is analyzed. Meanwhile, the deposition mechanism of amorphous alloy coatings is discussed by simulation and experiment. Finally, the key issues involved in the preparation of amorphous alloy coatings via CS technology are summarized, and the future development is also being prospected.

The oxidation behavior and microstructural evolution of the nanostructure of Fe-Cr-Al oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys prepared by spark plasma sintering were investigated by high-temperature oxidation experiments in air at 1200 °C for 100 h. The formation of Al2O3 scale was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) line scans. The oxidation rate of Fe-Cr-Al ODS alloys is lower than that of conventional Fe-Cr-Al alloys, and the oxide layer formed on the Fe-Cr-Al alloy appeared loose and cracked, whereas the oxide layer formed on the Fe-Cr-Al ODS alloys was adherent and flat. This is due to the high density of dispersed nano-oxides hindering the diffusion of Al element and the formation of vacancies caused by them. In addition, the nano-oxides could also adhere to the oxide layer. Besides, the microstructure of the Fe-Cr-Al ODS alloy had excellent stability during high-temperature oxidation.

Abstract The performance of Fe-Si coatings and an iron aluminide (FeAl) intermetallic alloy (FeAl40at%+0.1at%B+10vol%Al2O3) in molten salts containing vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) is reported. Corrosion and fouling by ash deposits containing V2O5 and Na2SO4 are typical corrosion problems in fuel oil-fired electric power units. High-temperature corrosion tests were performed using both electrochemical polarization and immersion techniques. The temperature interval of this study was 600°C to 900°C, and the molten salts were 80wt%V2O5-20wt%Na2SO4. Curves of corrosion current density vs temperature obtained by the potentiodynamic studies are reported, as well as the weight loss vs temperature curves from molten salt immersion tests. Both Fe-Si coatings and FeAl40at%+0.1at%B+10vol%Al2O3 showed good behavior against molten salt corrosion. The final results show the potential of these coatings and alloys to solve the high-temperature corrosion in fuel oil-fired electric power units.

A SUNTRACKER (illustrated in figure1), is a Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) unit, in the category of solar dish engines. The novel solar dish engine module (shown in figure 2) is designed to provide 10.1kW electric power (measured at the engine output electric power lugs), from a conversion of 21kW solar energy from the solar dish reflective sun light to the high temperature receiver focal point. Total electric power output from the solar dish engine module is attributed to combined cycles, closed brayton cycle (CBC) and a organic rankine cycle (ORC), both of which are hermetically sealed to atmosphere. The CBC engine receives 21kW solar energy from a solar dish, estimated to have 27 square meters (291 square feet) reflective surface area. However, unlike the photovoltaic (PV) units, the SUNTRACKER will provide increased use of available solar energy from sunlight. Concentrated sunlight from the dish will focus on the CBC engine receiver, which in turn heats the working fluid media to as much as 1600F, pending the ratio of solar dish to receiver areas. A specific gas mixture of xenon/helium, with excellent thermodynamic properties is used for the high temperature application. Turbomachinery in the CBC engine has one moving part / assembly (compressor impeller, alternator rotor and turbine rotor), mounted on compliant foil bearings. Reference figure 4 as an example. The engine operates with a compressor impeller stage pressure ratio 1.6, and is recuperated. Electric power, measured at the CBC engine electric power lugs, is 6.4kW. The CBC engine is not new, (a closed Brayton cycle, sealed to atmosphere) [1], [4], [8], [18], [19]. However, the application to extract thermal energy from the sunlight and provide electric power in commercial and residential use is (patented). In addition, to increase the efficiency of solar energy conversion to electric power, waste heat from the CBC engine provides thermal energy to an ORC engine, to generate an additional electrical output of 3.7kW (measured at the output electric power lugs). With use of an ORC system, the size of the radiator (CBC unit) for heat rejection is reduced significantly. Working fluid HFC-RC245fa [10] was selected for the ORC unit, based on the low temperature application. Also, as with the CBC turbomachinery, the ORC rotor assembly has one moving part, comprised of a pump impeller, alternator rotor and turbine rotor. With the two engines combined, total system thermal efficiency is 48% (10.1kW electric power out / 21kW solar energy in). However, power electronics are needed for conversion of high frequency voltage at the engine output electric power leads to 60/50 Hz power, for customer use. Power electronics losses for this machine, debits the power 0.5 kW. Thus total electric power to the customer, as measured at power electronics output terminals, is 9.6kW. With solar energy, from the reflective sunlight solar dish 21kW and measured output power from the power electronics 9.6kW, the conversion of solar energy to useful electric power an efficiency 46% (i.e. 9.6kW / 21kW). In addition, the design does not require external water / liquid for cooling.
