Intermediate Heat Treatment – A New Proceeding for Aluminum Alloys Using Forming Limit Diagrams

This paper presents a new procedure for a heat treatment embedded between two cold forming steps. A first cold forming step induces a defined strain hardening in the material. The following step is the heat treatment which takes place in a furnace at various temperatures and for certain durations. The application of such an intermediate heat treatment reduces the strain hardening of the material and enhances the elongation. This allows a higher degree of deformation in the second cold forming operation. The achievable properties of the aluminum alloy AlMg4.5Mn (AA5182) were discussed in detail. Further investigations using Nakajima test setup revealed an increased formability of the material. First the Nakajima samples were pre-strained along different linear strain paths to a predefined strain value. Afterwards the samples were heat treated without allowing the aluminum alloy to recrystallize. After cooling down the samples to room temperature, the tests are continued until the material’s fracture. As a result heat treatment dependent forming limit curves (FLC) are obtained. In comparison with a measured FLC at room temperature the support of the intermediate heat treatment on enhanced formability were shown. Furthermore the method is not restricted to AA5182 aluminum alloys.

AbstractBy using the wrought aluminum alloys can be created castings with higher mechanical properties than the castings made of standard foundry aluminum alloys, but it is necessary to handle the process of making sound castings without any defects such as hot tears and shrinkage porosity. In experiments, we have been studied of wrought aluminum alloy EN AW-2024 which has been processed by the casting with crystallization under pressure with forced flow. Castings were heat treated by standard T6 heat treatment.

Characteristics of aluminum alloys such as light weight, high strength-to-weight ratio and favorable corrosion resistance have brought about a bright application prospect in building structures. Wrought alloys are applicable to common beams and columns, while casting alloys can be fabricated as connectors in point-supported glass curtain wall and joints in spatial latticed structures on account of easy implement of moulding. Because of high strength, outstanding castability and remarkable mechanical properties after heat treatment, ZL111 in aluminum-silicon alloys is regarded as a desirable option. However, aluminum alloys are non-linear materials and their properties vary with casting and heat treatment modes. It is the well-marked distinction between aluminum alloy and ordinary carbon steel that special study on mechanical and fatigue performance is required. ZL111 raw materials were selected, with alloying agent and fabrication processes meeting the requirement of GB/T 1173-1995 standard. After T6 heat treatment process, test coupons were obtained by machining from raw materials. By utilization of electronic universal testing machine and cryogenic box, tensile tests at room temperature and low temperatures were performed. High-circle fatigue tests were carried out to obtain the fatigue performance of the material. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was introduced to observe morphology of tensile and fatigue fractures. The tests revealed the relationship between mechanical property index and temperature, which indicated that the ZL111-T6 would increase in strength and plasticity. The microstructure of fractures validated and explained the macroscopic results. Furthermore, material strength at room temperature or low temperatures, stiffness and fatigue performance could satisfy bearing and normal serviceability requirement. Because of non existence of ductile-brittle transition temperature, superior corrosion resistance and outstanding castability, ZL111-T6 material is prone to fabricate complicated elements and joints withstanding cryogenic environment instead of carbon steel.

Tailored heat treated blanks (THTB) is the generic term for an innovative approach to enhance the formability of blanks made out of high strength steel or aluminum alloys. Key idea of the technology is the adaption of the mechanical properties by a local heat treatment. Based on the new property distribution, the material flow during the forming operation can be improved and the forming limit can be enhanced. In comparison to conventional temperature assisted approaches the forming is performed at room temperature and therefore all advantages of a cold forming process can be used. Most challenging within the application is the definition of the heat treatment layout. Up to now the layout is dimensioned in a time-consuming trial and error procedure. In this paper a new approach for the automatic optimization of the heat treatment layout and the blank outline is presented.

The effects of severe plastic deformation (SPD) by isothermal rolling at the temperature of liquid nitrogen combined with prior- and post-SPD heat treatment, on microstructure and hardness of Al-4.4%Cu-1.4%Mg-0.7%Mn (D16) alloy were investigated. It was found no nanostructuring even after straining to 75%. Сryodeformation leads to microshear banding and processing the high-density dislocation substructures with a cell size of ~ 100-200 nm. Such a structure remains almost stable under 1 hr annealing up to 200oC and with further temperature increase initially transforms to bimodal with a small fraction of nanograins and then to uniform coarse grained one. It is found the change in the alloy post–SPD aging response leading to more active decomposition of the preliminary supersaturated aluminum solid solution, and to the alloy extra hardening under aging with shorter times and at lower temperatures compared to T6 temper.

The effects of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), further heat treatment and rolling on the structure and room temperature mechanical properties of the commercial aluminum alloys 6061 (Al-0.9Mg-0.7Si) and 1560 (Al-6.5Mg-0.6Mn) were investigated. It has been shown that the strength of the alloys after ECAP is higher than that achieved after conventional processing. Prior ECAP solution treatment and post-ECAP ageing can additionally increase the strength of the 6061 alloy. Under optimal ageing conditions a yield strength (YS) of 434 MPa and am ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 470 MPa were obtained for the alloy. Additional cold rolling leads to a YS and UTS of 475 and 500 MPa with 8% elongation. It was found that the post-ECAP isothermal rolling of the 1560 alloy resulted in the formation of a nano-fibred structure and a tensile strength (YS = 540 MPa and UTS = 635 MPa) that has never previously been observed in commercial non-heat treatable alloys.

Purpose. To conduct an experimental study on M102 aluminum alloy bulk content characterization under cyclic loadings for precision applications such as balance machines, optical, and laser instruments. M102 (AL-C-O) dispersion-reinforced aluminum alloy was chosen because of its ability to withstand temperatures beyond 200C and has a better strength than precipitation-hardened Al alloys at room temperature. A CNC milling machine is used to manufacture test samples with longitudinal machining directions. A constant time interval is set for the fabric a quarter-hour span, which is based on the investigation of inelastic and plastic deformations in the nanoscale. Methodology. An electromagnetic test instrument applies a tensile stress range of 10 to 145 N/mm2 to samples with particular shape. It should be noted that interferometers and capacitive sensors were used to measure all forms of deformations with and without loading. The experiments are carried out in a temperature-stable environment of 30.5 C; measurements are taken within a residual strain range of 10 microns. Findings. The results obtained show that results for inelastic deformations for samples of longitudinal cuts direction at 30.5 C were measured under 150 N/mm2 stress as 500 nm inelastic deformation and 100 nm plastic deformation were measured, which is much higher than aluminum alloy studied before at room temperature (20 C). Furthermore, it was found that the time constant of the M102 (ALCO) aluminum alloy samples was double times higher than that for other samples, Originality. For the first time, a study has been conducted on inelastic and plastic deformations in the nanoscale for characterization of M102 aluminum alloy bulk content under cyclic loadings for precision applications. Practical value. One of the main factors affecting the using of other materials than steel in precision applications such as balance machines, optical, and laser instruments is measurement and determination of inelastic, plastic and time constant of the process of delamination of materials of different aluminum alloys since they are nonmagnetic, are easily machined and shaped. This will bring new products and opportunities for these materials.

The automotive TWIP steels are high-Mn austenitic steels, with a relevant C content, which exhibit a promising combination of strength and toughness, arising from the ductile austenitic structure, which is strengthened by C, and from the TWIP (TWinning Induced Plasticity) effect. The microstructure of the low-alloy Q&P steels consists of martensite and austenite and is obtained by the Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) heat treatment, which consists of: austenitizing; quenching to the Tqtemperature, comprised between Msand Mf; soaking at the Tppartitioning temperature (Tpbeing equal to or slightly higher than Tq) to allow carbon to diffuse from martensite to austenite; and quenching to room temperature. The fatigue behavior of these steels is examined both in the as-fabricated condition and after pre-straining and welding operations, which are representative of the cold forming and assembling operations performed to fabricate the car-bodies. Moreover, the microscopic fracture mechanisms are assessed by means of fractographic examinations.

The purpose of this paper is to present the microstructure and mechanical behavior of 6060 aluminum alloy after intense plastic deformation. Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) was used as a method of severe plastic deformation. Before ECAP part of the samples were heat treated to remove internal stresses in the commercially available aluminium alloy. The evolution of microstructure and tensile strength were tested after 1, 3, 6 and 9 ECAP passes in annealed and non annealed states. It was found that intensely plastically deformed refined grains were present in the tested samples and exhibited increased mechanical properties. Differences were noted between samples without and after heat treatment

Nonlinear acoustic techniques are established tools for the characterization of micro-inhomogeneous materials with higher sensitivity, compared to linear ultrasonic techniques. In particular, the evaluation of material elastic quadratic nonlinearity via the detection of the second harmonic generation by acoustic waves is known to provide an assessment of the state variation of heat treated micro-structured materials. We report on the first application for non-destructive diagnostics of material thermal aging of finite-amplitude longitudinal acoustic pulses generated and detected by lasers. Finite-amplitude longitudinal pulses were launched in aluminum alloy samples by deposited liquid-suspended carbon particles layer irradiated by a nanosecond laser source. An out-of-plane displacement at the epicenter of the opposite sample surface was measured by an interferometer. This laser ultrasonic technique provided an opportunity to study the propagation in aluminum alloys of finite-amplitude acoustic pulses with a strain up to 5 × 10−3. The experiments revealed a signature of the hysteretic quadratic nonlinearity of micro-structured material manifested in an increase of the duration of detected acoustic pulses with an increase of their amplitude. The parameter of the hysteretic quadratic nonlinearity of the aluminum alloy (Al6061) was found to be of the order of 100 and to exhibit more than 50% variations in the process of the alloy thermal aging. By comparing the measured parameter of the hysteretic quadratic nonlinearity in aluminum alloys that were subjected to heat-treatment at 220 °C for different times (0 min, 20 min, 40 min, 1 h, 2 h, 10 h, 100 h, and 1000 h), with measurements of yield strength in same samples, it was established that the extrema in the dependence of the hysteretic nonlinearity and of the yield strength of this alloy on heat treatment time are correlated. This experimental observation provides the background for future research with the application goal of suggested nonlinear laser ultrasonic techniques for non-destructive evaluation of alloys’ strength and rigidity in the process of their heat treatment.

Automotive industry makes wide scale use of cast aluminium alloy 354 in the production of crucial components, such as compressor wheels for turbochargers. The compressor wheels undergo T61 heat treatment, involving artificial ageing at 188°C. This study focuses on the possible improvement of the mechanical behaviour of the components by subjecting them to modified heat treatments involving usage of lower artificial ageing temperatures (160, 171 and 177°C). A comparative analysis of tensile properties and strain hardening behaviour has been carried out with different artificial ageing temperatures. Results showed that the heat treatment routinely employed by the industry (aged at 188°C) leads to overageing, thereby resulting in relatively inferior mechanical properties and lower strain hardening rates as compared to the samples heat treated at lower artificial ageing temperatures. It is concluded that lowering of the artificial ageing temperature can lead to a superior state of components with respect to mechanical behaviour.
